Determinants Of Work Location Choice In Academia, Alessandra Migliore, Chiara Tagliaro, Ying Hua
Determinants Of Work Location Choice In Academia, Alessandra Migliore, Chiara Tagliaro, Ying Hua
CIB Conferences
The COVID-19 pandemic has forced most workers to work from home (WFH). At first glance, this seems not to be a significant change for academics, who, even in regular times, are used to performing their research activities autonomously and balancing on-campus and off-campus locations. Instead, precisely because of their flexible habits, it is interesting to study where academics worked during the COVID-19 pandemic and which factors relate to their location choices. This paper addresses these issues using survey data from 7,865 Italian-tenured academics. First, cluster analysis unveils four main location choices of Italian academics during the COVID-19 pandemic depending on …

Accra Airport City: Construction Practices And Forms, Arturo Pavani Dr
CIB Conferences
This paper analyzes the scientific theory about African and Global cities and their practices through the analysis of a specific case study, the Airport City business district in Accra, Ghana. The goal of this research is to investigate what are the characteristics that influence this neighborhood’s architectural and urban development, starting from the analysis of its practices and forms. The purpose of the broader research is to investigate the forms and dynamics that shape this urban environment using a problem-driven and phronetic approach that starts from local practice and context and later reframes them within scientific theory.

Analysis Of Supply And Demand Of Urban Community-Based Elderly Care Facilities And Services: The Case Of Shanghai, China, Ding Rong, Sara Biscaya
CIB Conferences
Community-based elderly care is a method of providing care to the elderly that has been actively developed in China. This approach involves utilising facilities within local communities as a key strategy to deliver care to older adults, emphasizing the role of community resources in supporting the elderly. These community-based facilities are essential for implementing social elderly care, ensuring that older individuals receive the necessary support and services within their communities. Elderly people should have equal opportunities to access basic public services from elderly care facilities and be respected for their free choice. The gaps between the supply and demand of …

Achieving The Un Sustainability Goals: The Role Of Digital Product Passports In The Architecture, Engineering And Construction Industry, Daniel Oteng, Richard Asante, Hossein Omrany, Bridget T.B. Eshun
CIB Conferences
The Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry’s extensive resource consumption, solid waste and carbon dioxide emission generation hinder the attainment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Digital product passports (DPPs) have been proposed to enhance the industry’s circularity and sustainability performance, thereby enabling the achievement of SDGs. However, among the few DPP studies, none of them specifically focuses on identifying which United Nations (UN) SDGs can be achieved by adopting DPPs in the AEC industry. This paper presents a systematic literature review exploring the role of DPPs in achieving the UN SDGs. Synthesis of the reviewed papers that …

Digital twins (DT) is a potent technology that could revolutionise the built environment towards sustainable smart facility management (FM). However, there are critical barriers that prior studies have not paid much attention to. Thus, this paper investigates the barriers to effective DT implementation for sustainable smart FM by exploring and prioritising them. This is achieved via a quantitative design comprising a literature review and a global expert survey. The design is further integrated with critical analysis and Pareto analysis. The study revealed an adequate level of agreement on the notion that DT if implemented effectively could achieve sustainable smart FM …

System Dynamic Framework For Integrating Building Information Modelling With Construction Productivity Measurement In Hong Kong, Archchana Shandraseharan, Wei Pan
System Dynamic Framework For Integrating Building Information Modelling With Construction Productivity Measurement In Hong Kong, Archchana Shandraseharan, Wei Pan
CIB Conferences
Relatively high construction cost in Hong Kong requires the industry to improve construction productivity substantially in order to stay competitive. An appropriate construction productivity measurement (CPM) method is crucial to improving construction productivity. While previous studies have highlighted the benefits of integrating building information modelling (BIM) with CPM, BIM is not yet fully utilized in CPM practices due to various constraints. Therefore, this paper aims to overcome the constraints by developing a system dynamic (SD) framework for integrating BIM with CPM. First, a systematic literature review is carried out to identify the wide-ranging constraints and strategies for integrating BIM with …

Optimisation Of Occupant Comfort And Energy Consumption In Indoor Environments: Responsive Homes Through Digital Twin And Building Automation Integration, Kushani Semasinghe, Srinath Perera, Xiaohua Jin, Marini Samaratunga, Samudaya Nanayakkara
CIB Conferences
Purpose: Building Automation System (BAS) presents encouraging opportunities to optimise energy consumption while elevating occupants’ thermal comfort. BAS ranges from regular thermostatic valves to home automation systems (HAS), in residential buildings. Well-designed HAS advantage in occupant spaces, providing optimum occupant comfort and energy efficiency. However, not accompanying essential parameters such as real-time climate conditions and occupancy thermal behaviour prevent real-time responsive HAS developments. Existing studies demonstrate an elevated need for efficient HAS, which can potentially consider these significant influencing factors with real-time responses. A developed approach that considers these dynamic changes provides an accurate HAS that addresses the current performance …

Effective and quality assessment is crucial in construction management (CM) education to evaluate students’ understanding of the diverse skills demanded by the industry. Integrated by the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) guidelines for its accredited CM programs, Bloom's Taxonomy provides a systematic and structured framework for aligning learning objectives with cognitive processes, guiding educators in developing assessments. However, under real-world practice, crafting quality assessment questions that align with Bloom's Taxonomy and the ACCE student learning outcomes (SLOs) poses challenges for CM instructors due to the specialized expertise and complexity of knowledge. This study investigates the potential of ChatGPT, an …

Analysis Of Three Decades Of Research In Road And Highway Work Zones Using Bibliometric Methods, Patrick X.W. Zou, Wenxiu Guo
CIB Conferences
Research in road and highway work zones has been continuously increasing since it is critical for maintaining traffic efficiency, reducing accident risks and minimising environmental impact during road maintenance, repair or upgrade. Road and highway work zones significantly impact safety due to traffic flow disruption, layout change and construction activities, which increase the likelihood of collisions, injuries and workers’ exposure to dangers. Despite the growing body of research, there is a lack of comprehensive bibliometric analysis that examines the historical, current and future trajectories of work zone research. This study analyzes 892 publications from 1990 to 2024, sourced from the …

The physical condition of motorways and trunk roads in Scotland is monitored by specialist contractors on behalf of Transport Scotland by annual condition survey to provide information about the structural, surface and safety condition of the road surface or pavements. Flexible asphalt pavement is subjected to continuous vehicular and environmental loading causing potholes that needs to be reinstated to maintain functional requirements. However, traditional pothole repair materials have sustainability concerns and can deteriorate quickly after installation. The longevity and durability of pothole repairs is important as repeat treatments incite additional costs. Innovation can enhance sustainable development and for road transport …
