Teaching Library Co-Operation To Library Students, Ben Rugaas
Teaching Library Co-Operation To Library Students, Ben Rugaas
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
This paper discusses the need for cooperation between libraries, and the forms this may take with examples of both formal and informal cooperation. The author conc1udes that the profession of library and information science is in a state of change and that the library schools must try to train librarians for the future situation. With regard to library cooperation, any library school will have problems in teaching and motivating students for something that does not seem to exist in the real world of libraries. When it comes to promoting library cooperation, through education, there are problems on both the cognitive …

The Compilation Of A Personal Documentation System, R. Kriek
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
This paper describes a course of instruction in the compilation of a personal documentation system, at Twente University of Technology, the Netherlands. Students are introduced to indexing with key words, thesaurus construction, bibliographical description, and the use of inverted files. They are taught the use of the 'uniterm card system'. The advantages of automation of a personal documentaion system are discussed.
Cooperation Between The Establishments Of Higher Education In Lausanne, T. J. Tanzer
Cooperation Between The Establishments Of Higher Education In Lausanne, T. J. Tanzer
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The city of Lausanne houses two Establishments of Higher Education, the University of Lausanne and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne.
While the university has a broader spectrum of subjects taught, certain, notably mathematics and the exact sciences, are taught at both. The boards of governors have mandated a study of the possibility of cooperation by the two libraries. The paper presents the exact situation in Lausanne, the implications for immediate close cooperation under an orthodox system and indicates where closer cooperation could be achieved with an automated system.
Dobis At The Bibliocentre, Doreen E. Carpenter
Dobis At The Bibliocentre, Doreen E. Carpenter
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The growth of the bibliocentre is traced from its origin in 1966 through to the selection, installation of the real time on-line DOBIS system, supported by internally designed and written programmes to load an existing database and produce output products. The methodology adopted for converting the database of approximately 400,000 records into a DOBIS format is described.
The role of DOBIS in achieving a high degree of efficiency to the workflow of the bibliocentre is examined in detail. The benefits, both to the network of users and the bibliocentre operation, resulting from DOBIS operating in-house, are highlighted. The versatility of …
Cooperation Amongst The Science Libraries At Oxford University, Dennis Shaw
Cooperation Amongst The Science Libraries At Oxford University, Dennis Shaw
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
In a historical introduction which traces the development of the Radcliffe Library alongside the Bodleian Library at Oxford it is shown how it took nearly two hundred years to establish a role for the Radcliffe as a science library. During this period, some of the science departments in the University of Oxford set up specialist libraries and from these beginnings has grown a very strong body of science departmental libraries. In spite of the richness and breadth of the literature collection in the University library nearly half of the scientific library resources in the University are devoted to supporting the …
Library Cooperation: Trends, Possibilities And Conditions, James E. Skipper
Library Cooperation: Trends, Possibilities And Conditions, James E. Skipper
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Arguments supporting library cooperation are compelling in their logic and economic implications, yet a review of the history of cooperative efforts suggests the existence of strong opposing forces whlch, in many instances, have frustrated planning and implementation.
Successful programmes for the cooperative development of library collections must be related to ancillary efforts to improve access to materials and to afford better bibliographic control.
Is Cooperation A Good Thing?, Maurice B. Line
Is Cooperation A Good Thing?, Maurice B. Line
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Instead of assuming that cooperation is desirabie and then considering how to cooperate, librarians should analyse their aims and functions and consider how cooperative approaches compare for cost-effectiveness with 'going it alone' and dependence on a central service.
The acquisition function of libraries must be largely fulfilled by local provision. This must be supported from other sources, but cooperative acquisition schemes are expensive to administer and less effective than central provision or state-funded concentration of resources on a few libraries.
It has yet to be proved that cataloguing and classification in most libraries need be detailed, or that libraries cannot …

Digital Processing Of Remotely Sensed Multispectral Data, Luis A. Bartolucci
Digital Processing Of Remotely Sensed Multispectral Data, Luis A. Bartolucci
LARS Technical Reports
Although it is well recognized that photointerpretation of the Landsat imagery can provide adequate information for mapping broad categories of land cover at a reconnaissance level, it is also true that the Landsat data in digital format (CCT's) together with numerical (computer-aided) analysis techniques can provide a great deal more information at a higher level of mapping detail with mapping units of approximately half a hectare.
This paper introduces the fundamental concepts involved in numerical analysis of multispectral scanner (MSS) data. Emphasis is placed in the description of the essential steps required to conduct a multispectral classification; that is, I. …

An Analytical Approach To The Design Of Spectral Measurements In The Design Of Multispectral Sensor, Daniel J. Wiersma, David A. Landgrebe
An Analytical Approach To The Design Of Spectral Measurements In The Design Of Multispectral Sensor, Daniel J. Wiersma, David A. Landgrebe
LARS Symposia
The purpose of the research which led to this paper is to develop an analytical procedure for the design of the spectral channels for multispectral remote sensor systems. An optimum design based on the criterion of minimum mean-square representation error using the Karhunen-Loeve expansion was developed to represent the spectral response functions from a stratum. From the overall pattern recognition system perspective the effect of the representation accuracy on a typical performance criterion, the probability of correct classification, is investigated. Although the analytical technique was developed primarily for the purpose of sensor design it was found that the procedure has …

Pasture/Wheat Surface Temperature Differences: Indicator Of Relative Soil Moisture Differences, Mesley D. Rosenthal, J. C. Harlan, Bruce J. Blanchard, G. Coleman
LARS Symposia
Thermal infrared data can potentially improve crop yield estimates through detection of different crop stress levels. Jackson, et al. (1977) have used thermal data in detecting different levels of moisture stress. An accumulated sum of the crop-air temperature difference through the growing season is indicative of different moisture stress levels and, consequently, wheat yields. Various other studies on different crops have arrived at similar results (Reginato, 1978).
Little work has been conducted relating satellite thermal data to moisture stress conditions. One important reason is that the spatial resolution of present satellite thermal data is quite large. For example, one pixel …

The State of Georgia and the Georgia Institute of Technology have created an exemplary relationship in the formation of a cohesive group for the analysis of Landsat data, its application to real world problems, and its inclusion in applications using geographic data base techniques. This group has evolved over a period of four to five years and lists as its accomplishments several successful demonstration projects using Landsat data, an operational Landsat classification of the entire State of Georgia using 60 classes, the integration of Landsat data into several geographic data bases for use in operational short and long range planning, …
Multi-Temporal Classification Of Winter Wheat Using A Growth State Model, Christine A. Hlavka, Stephen M. Carlyle, Ryozo Yokoyama, Robert M. Haralick
Multi-Temporal Classification Of Winter Wheat Using A Growth State Model, Christine A. Hlavka, Stephen M. Carlyle, Ryozo Yokoyama, Robert M. Haralick
LARS Symposia
In this paper we describe a multi-temporal classification procedure for crops in LANDSAT scenes. The method involves the creation of crop signatures which characterize multi-spectral observations as functions of phenological growth states. The phenological signature models spectral reflectance explicitly as a function of crop maturity rather than a function of observation date. This means that instead of stacking spectral vectors of one observation on another, as is usually done for multi-temporal data, we establish for each possible crop category a correspondence of time to growth state which minimizes the smallest difference between the given multi-spectral multi-temporal vector and the category …
An Image Registration Algorithm Using Sampled Binary Correlation, Ernest W. Cordan, Benjamin W. Patz
An Image Registration Algorithm Using Sampled Binary Correlation, Ernest W. Cordan, Benjamin W. Patz
LARS Symposia
One of the problems associated with the automatic image processing of satellite photographs such as weather maps is the need for image registration; that is, the fitting of a map that has some translational and rotational bias to a known data base. this paper investigates a least square method of image registration using an image that has been converted into a boundary map with a pixel representation of 1 for land, -1 for water and zero for cloud pixels. A sampled correlation array is constructed about the correlation peak of the binary cross-correlation for the coded satellite map against its …

Spectral responses of two humid mesic region glaciated soils, Chalmers silty clay loam and Fincastle silt loam, formed under prairie grass and forest vegetation, respectively, were measured both in the laboratory under controlled moisture equilibria, and in the field under various moisture and crop residue conditions. The Exotech Model 20C spectroradiometer obtained spectral data in the 0.52 to 2.32 µm wavelength range in 0.1 µm increments while used in an indoor configuration with a bidirectional reflectance factor reflectometer providing an artificial illumination source consisting of a 1000 watt tungsten iodine coiled filament lamp with transfer optics. Asbestos tension tables were …
A Method For Classifying Multispectral Remote Sensing Data Using Context, Philip H. Swain, Howard J. Stegel, Bradley W. Smith
A Method For Classifying Multispectral Remote Sensing Data Using Context, Philip H. Swain, Howard J. Stegel, Bradley W. Smith
LARS Symposia
A statistical model of spatial context is described and procedures for classifying remote sensing data using a context classifier are outlined. Experimental results are presented. Because the computational requirements of the context classifier are very large, its implementation on parallel/pipelined multiprocessor systems is being investigated. Some of the special considerations necessary for such implementations are described, with particular reference to implementation on an array of Control Data Corporation Flexible Processors.
Imagery Processing System And Its Applications, N. V. Kulkov, V. P. Pyatkin
Imagery Processing System And Its Applications, N. V. Kulkov, V. P. Pyatkin
LARS Symposia
The existing disproportion between high efficiency of imagery receipt process and low productivity of the ways of their processing makes actual the creation of an Imagery Processing System, which may be used for the estimation of the efficiency of new hardware and mathematical methods of picture processing.
The main idea of hardware functional organization is compatibility of special purpose processors and input/output image units with a base computing system in external memory on the disks and tapes level.
The base computing system includes three BESM-6 computers with the total external memory field on the disks. The terminal computer (minicomputer M-6000) …

A Parametric Model For Multispectral Scanners, Bijan G. Mobasseri, Clare D. Mcgillem, Paul E. Anuta
LARS Symposia
Efficient acquisition and utilization of remotely sensed data requires an extensive a priori evaluation of the performance of the basic data collection unit, the multispectral scanner. The objective is the development of a fully parametric technique to theoretically evaluate the systems response in any desired operational environment and provide the necessary information in selecting a set of optimum parameters.
In this paper the multispectral scanner spatial characteristics are represented by a linear shift-invariant multiple-port system where the N spectral bands comprise the input processes. The scanner characteristic function, the relationship governing the transformation of the input spatial and hence spectral …

A Non-Interactive Approach To Land Use Determination, Ralph V. Algazi, Gary E. Ford, Doreen I. Meyer
LARS Symposia
In this paper, we report on an operational procedure for use by the Corps of Engineers to acquire land use information for hydrologic planning purposes. The operational constraints preclude the use of dedicated, interactive image processing facilities. The procedure, which is summarized in detail, combines manual interpretation techniques and the batch-mode computer analysis of Landsat digital data. An example of the application of the procedure to an urban watershed is described.
