Remote Sensing Data Applied To Land Use Survey At The Paraiba Valley, M. A. Lombardo, E. M. L. De Moraes Novo, M. Niero, C. Foresti Jan 1981

Remote Sensing Data Applied To Land Use Survey At The Paraiba Valley, M. A. Lombardo, E. M. L. De Moraes Novo, M. Niero, C. Foresti

LARS Symposia

The objective of this study is to develop a methodology for land-use survey and to determine the land-use modification rates using data of LANDSAT system. The Paraiba Valley (state of Sao Paulo) was selected as test site. Both visual and automatic interpretation methods were employed to analyze seven land-use classes. They are: urban area, industrial area, bare soil, cultivated area, pastureland, reforestation and natural vegetation. By means of visual interpretation it is observed little spectral differences among those classes. The automatic classification of LANDSAT MSS data using maximum likelihood algorithm shows a 39% average error of omission and a 3,4% …

Comprehensive Geo-Data Base Control With An Electronic Coordinate Digitizer, Thomas D. Frank Jan 1981

Comprehensive Geo-Data Base Control With An Electronic Coordinate Digitizer, Thomas D. Frank

LARS Symposia

A need for geo-referenced data within the scientific community has led to the development of comprehensive geographic information systems. Such comprehensive systems are characterized by three fundamental attributes. They possess a data organization which is indexed by using a geographic locator. They have the capability to manipulate and analyze the data base by displaying raw data, to aggregate raw data into classes, to tabulate the distribution of data within a class, and to perform arbitrary arithmetic operations on the data. They also possess the capability to prepare graphical displays of the data in the form of maps. Now that remote …

On The Slope-Aspect Correction Of Multispectral Scanner Data, P. M. Teillet, B. Guindon, D. G. Goodenough Jan 1981

On The Slope-Aspect Correction Of Multispectral Scanner Data, P. M. Teillet, B. Guindon, D. G. Goodenough

LARS Symposia

The effects of topography on the radiometric properties of multispectral scanner (MSS) data are examined in the context of the remote sensing of forests in mountainous regions. The two test areas considered for this study are located in the coastal mountains of British Columbia, one at the Anderson River near Boston Bar and the other at Gun Lake near Bralorne. The predominant forest type at the former site is Douglas fir, whereas forest types at the latter site are primarily lodgepole pine and ponderosa pine. Both regions have rugged topography, with elevations ranging from 275 to 1500 metres above sea …

Computer Generated Maps From Digital Satellite Data: A Case Study In Florida, L. G. Arvanitis, R. M. Reich, R. Newburne Jan 1981

Computer Generated Maps From Digital Satellite Data: A Case Study In Florida, L. G. Arvanitis, R. M. Reich, R. Newburne

LARS Symposia

The availability of satellite data and the advantages offered by automatic machine-processing of such data have opened up new and exciting possibilities for developing ground cover maps. Two Landsat analyses techniques (an unsupervised clustering algorithm called Landsat Signature Development Program, and an interactive method based on the Multispectral Image Analyzer) are used to compare computer generated character maps to known earth surface features. Data samples are shown and applications are discussed. Reference is made to the value of the digital computer in natural and man-made features mapping and monitoring, and suggestions are given for further research.

Application Of Remote Sensing And Geographic Information System Techniques To Evaluate Agricultural Production Potential In Developing Countries, Ger Schultink, Weldon Lodwick, J. B. Johnson Jan 1981

Application Of Remote Sensing And Geographic Information System Techniques To Evaluate Agricultural Production Potential In Developing Countries, Ger Schultink, Weldon Lodwick, J. B. Johnson

LARS Symposia

The Comprehensive Resource Inventory and Evaluation System (CRIES) project uses a multidisciplinary approach to (1) assist developing countries to analyze their agricultural production potential, and (2) enhance their capabilities to conduct such analyses for policy formulation and evaluation. The project staff has collaborated within their respective disciplines with counterparts in the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Syria, and Honduras to enhance each country's capacity to analyze agricultural production possibilities. The technical assistance provided has been in one of four functional areas. These are: (1) data acquisition; (2) information management and analyses; (3) analyses of policy alternatives; and (4) technology transfer …

A Georeferenced Information System For Real Time Hydrologic Modeling, Jack D. Fellows Jan 1981

A Georeferenced Information System For Real Time Hydrologic Modeling, Jack D. Fellows

LARS Symposia

Remotely sensed digital data (Landsat CCT) has proven an efficient and cost effective means of defining land cover information required in hydrologic modeling. However, an organization such as a county government finds great difficulty in collecting and integrating regional ancillary data (aerial photos, soils, etc) with digital remote sensed data.

A computer-based information system allowing engineers to create, access, integrate, and maintain a multi-parameter geographical data base which provides information required by the Soil Conservation Service hydrologic models is described. Land cover, soils, and elevation data are stored as arrays of cells referenced to USGS quad sheets.

A typical scenario …

Effect Of Forest Canopy Closure On Incoming Solar Radiance, C. L. Dottavio Jan 1981

Effect Of Forest Canopy Closure On Incoming Solar Radiance, C. L. Dottavio

LARS Symposia

A previous investigation into the utility of Landsat multispectral scanner (MSS) data for detecting gypsy moth defoliation has met with limited success. The ability to separate healthy and moderate defoliation is confounded by spectral similarity and topographic effects. In order to better understand the physical processes involved in defoliation assessment from remotely sensed data, a field study was designed to investigate the effect of forest canopy closure and other environmental variables on in· coming solar radiation. Diffuse radiation measurements were recorded in red, infrared, and middle infrared wavelengths using the Mark II Three Band Field Radiometer. Results to date indicate …

Remote Sensing Of Soil Trafficability Factors, James L. Kirkland Jan 1981

Remote Sensing Of Soil Trafficability Factors, James L. Kirkland

LARS Symposia

The ability of a soil to support military vehicular traffic is usually determined by using the US Army cone penetrometer. The cone index obtained from this method may be used in the AMC-74 mobility model. Moisture is an important factor in the cone index of all types of soil. Experiments indicate that the electrical resistivity of a soil is related to its moisture content. This paper describes some of these experiments and introduces a technique for aerially obtaining and machine processing soil resistivity data for the mobility model.

Effects Of Nitrogen Nutrition On The Growth, Yield And Reflectance Characteristics Of Corn Canopies, G. Walburg, M. E. Bauer, C. S. T. Daughtry Jan 1981

Effects Of Nitrogen Nutrition On The Growth, Yield And Reflectance Characteristics Of Corn Canopies, G. Walburg, M. E. Bauer, C. S. T. Daughtry

LARS Technical Reports

An experiment was conducted in which spectral and agronomic measurements were collected from corn (Zea mays L.) canopies under four nitrogen treatment levels (0, 67, 134, and 202 kg/ha) at the Purdue Agronomy Farm, W. Lafayette, IN, on 11 dates during 1978 and 12 dates during 1979. Spectral measurements over the 0.4 to 2.4 µm wavelength region were acquired with a spectroradiometer and used to compute reflectance factor. Agronomic data collected included biomass, leaf area index, plant height, crop development stage, and percent soil cover. Data were analyzed to determine: (1) the relationship between the spectral responses of canopies and …
