Economic Impact Of Remote Sensing Data As The Source Of Nonpoint Pollution Monitoring And Control, W. L. Miller Jan 1974

Economic Impact Of Remote Sensing Data As The Source Of Nonpoint Pollution Monitoring And Control, W. L. Miller

LARS Technical Reports

Nonpoint pollution of streams with sediment as a result of runoff from alternative uses of land has become a socially unacceptable product of economic activity as accessed by society currently. This report describes a research approach to economically achieve correction of the nonpoint pollution problem. The research approach integrates the economic model with those data which my be obtainable from remotely sensed sources.

The economic problem involves measurement of the direct benefits and costs associated with the changes in land management activities necessary to reduce the level of nonpoint pollution. These costs and benefits reflect changes in the net revenue …

Erts-1 Aircraft Support, 24-Channel Mss Cct Experiences And Land Use Classification Results, A. J. Richardson, M. R. Gautreaux, C. L. Wiegand

LARS Symposia

Aircraft multispectral scanner (MSS) data collected by the NASA 24-channel MSS on July 26, 1972 (Mission 207) over the USDA, Research Farm at Weslaco, Texas, were evaluated for quality and for crop, soil, and water discrimination. The standard deviations for each of the 24 channels for a uniform surface, a water reservoir, were used as an indicator of system noise. By this criterion, channels 22, 20, 15, qnd 21 were of low quality. Based on the ratio of odd to even numbers in all channels, the conclusion was reached that the data are 7-bit precision. An optimum channel selection program …

Analysis Of Remotely Sensed Data For Detecting Soil Limitations, L. A. Benson, C. J. Frazee, F. A. Waltz Oct 1973

Analysis Of Remotely Sensed Data For Detecting Soil Limitations, L. A. Benson, C. J. Frazee, F. A. Waltz

LARS Symposia

During 1971 and 1972 a detailed study was conducted on a fallow field in the proposed Oahe Irrigation Project to determine the relationship between the tonal variation observed on aerial photographs and the properties of eroded soil. Correlation and regression analysis of digitized, multiemulsion, color infrared film (2443) data and detailed field data revealed a highly significant correlation between film transmittance and several soil properties indicative of the erosion limitation. Computer classification of the multiemulsion film data resulted in maps portraying the eroded soil and the normal soil. Both correlation and computer classification results were best using the reflectance data …

An Iterative Approach To The Feature Selection Problem, Henry P. Decell, John A. Quirein Oct 1973

An Iterative Approach To The Feature Selection Problem, Henry P. Decell, John A. Quirein

LARS Symposia

The B-average divergence for m-distinct ~asses, resulting from the linear transformation y = Bx, is proposed as a feature selection criterion, where B is a k by n matrix of rank k <= n. It is shown that if the B-average divergence resulting from B is large enough, then the probability of misclassification, considered as a function of the class of all k by n matrices, is essentially minimized by B. A computer program, utilizing a gradient procedure, is developed to numerically maximize the B-average divergence and results are presented for the Cl flight line. For this example, corresponding to 9-distinct classes, most of the discriminatory information is found to lie in a 3-dimensional subspace, defined by an appropriately chosen 3 by 12 matrix B.

Numerical Classification Procedures, Glen C. Gustafson Oct 1973

Numerical Classification Procedures, Glen C. Gustafson

LARS Symposia

A number of up-to-date numerical classification techniques are described. These include the orthogonal and oblique factor analysis methods, and the unweighed pair-group cluster analysis procedure. The techniques are applied to morphometric data from 159 small drainage basins from two geographical regions. Transformation techniques to achieve the normal distribution with respect to symmetry are applied.

Classification Of Turbidity Levels In The Texas Marine Coastal Zone, E. A. Weisblatt, J. B. Zaitzeff, C. A. Reeves Oct 1973

Classification Of Turbidity Levels In The Texas Marine Coastal Zone, E. A. Weisblatt, J. B. Zaitzeff, C. A. Reeves

LARS Symposia

.The unsupervised Iterative Self-Organizing Clustering System (ISOCLS) and the supervised Earth Resources Interactive Processing System (ERIPS) were used to detect, delineate and classify near-surface turbidity patterns in the Galveston and Trinity Bays, Texas and adjacent coastal waters. Data used in the analysis was ERTS-l Multispectral Scanner (MSS) digital data in the visible spectral bands from 0.5 to 1.1 micrometers, and related in situ water measurements.

Theoretical considerations suggest that because solar radiation attenuates with water depth and water constituents as a function of wavelength, classification of turbidity levels based on spectral characteristics is a classification based on spectral signatures from …

A Linear Shift-Invariant Image Preprocessing Technique For Multispectral Scanner Systems, C. D. Mcgillem, T. E. Riemer Jan 1973

A Linear Shift-Invariant Image Preprocessing Technique For Multispectral Scanner Systems, C. D. Mcgillem, T. E. Riemer

LARS Technical Reports

A linear shift-invariant image preprocessing technique is examined which requires no specific knowledge of any parameter of the original image and which is sufficiently general to allow the effective radius of the composite imaging system to be arbitrarily shaped and reduced, subject primarily to the noise power constraint. In addition, the size of the point-spread function of the preprocessing filter can be arbitrarily controlled, thus minimizing truncation errors.

Spectral Mapping Of Soil Organic Matter, S. J. Kristof, M. F. Baumgardner, C. J. Johannsen Jan 1973

Spectral Mapping Of Soil Organic Matter, S. J. Kristof, M. F. Baumgardner, C. J. Johannsen

LARS Technical Reports

Multispectral remote sensing data were examined for use in the mapping of soil organic matter content. Computer-implemented pattern recognition techniques were used to analyze data collected in May 1969 and May 1970 by an airborne multispectral scanner over a 40-km flightline. Two fields within the flightline were selected for intensive study. Approximately 400 surface soil samples from these fields were obtained for organic matter analysis. The analytical data were used as training sets for computer implemented analysis of the spectral data. It was found that within the geographical limitations included in this study, multispectral data and automatic data processing techniques …

The Corn Blight Watch Experiment: Economic Implications For Use Of Remote Sensing For Collecting Data On Major Crops, Jerry A. Sharples Jan 1973

The Corn Blight Watch Experiment: Economic Implications For Use Of Remote Sensing For Collecting Data On Major Crops, Jerry A. Sharples

LARS Technical Reports

The 1971 Corn Blight Watch (CBW) Experiment was the result of two major developments. One was the Southern corn leaf blight epidemic of 1970 and the concern about its return in 1971. The other was the need to test and evaluate the technological breakthroughs that had recently been made in remote sensing. In this paper I use the Corn Blight Watch experience to draw some implications for using remote sensing to collect data on major crops.

Application Of Multispectral Remote Sensing To Soil Survey Research In Indiana, A. L. Zachary, J. E. Cipra, R. I. Diderickson, S. J. Kristof, M. F. Baumgardner

LARS Technical Reports

Recent advances have been made in the technology of measuring radiance from the earth's surface using multiple-wavelength airborne scanning spectrometers. Concurrently, advances were being made in the application of computer-implemented pattern recognition techniques to these multispectral data. Together these two tools have resulted in a capability for napping various earth surface features with extreme rapidity and varying degrees of accuracy. This study compared computer-implemented mappings based on spectral properties of bare soil surfaces with mapping units of interest to soil surveyors. Some soil types could be differentiated by their spectral properties. In other cases, soils with similar surface colors and …
