Results Of A Work Study Of Interlibrary And Information Services At Helsinki University Of Technology Library, Arja-Riitta Haarala, A. Juvonen, L.-K. Uuttu

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In 1975 statutes were enacted in Finland concerning costing principles for services rendered by public institutions to outside customers. The basis for costing is cost price. The regulations also concern university libraries, who, however, have not been able to follow the rules to the letter as regards interlibrary lending or copy services. The reasons for this are that interlibrary loans traditionally have been free and also the fact that average unit costs are not known.

Several work studies concerning library and information services and their service level have been reported in the literature (1). Studies have been carried out inter …

Application Of Bibliometrics In Technical University Libraries, Dieter Schmidmaier May 1977

Application Of Bibliometrics In Technical University Libraries, Dieter Schmidmaier

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

By the science of science by scientometrics (1) is meant the application of exact measuring methods in the investigation of scientific systems. In this, measuring (2) is the member connecting observation with mathematics and allowing the formulation of quantitative theories. In the individual scientific systems there developed subjects of research dealing with metric methods - in chemistry stoichiometry, in the biological sciences biometrics, in sociology sociometry. The scientific systems dealing with the registration and evaluation of printed publications play an important part in the success of scientometric works, because the results obtained in the course of development of the sciences …

A Practical Method For Correcting Bidirectional Reflectance Variations, Dwight D. Egbert Jan 1977

A Practical Method For Correcting Bidirectional Reflectance Variations, Dwight D. Egbert

LARS Symposia

The purpose of the investigation described here was to analyze angular bidirectional reflectance variations and test the hypothesis that first order variations could be described from a consideration of shadows created by surface perturbations. The results reported here demonstrate the validity of this approach, and while it is not suitable for calculating absolute spectral reflectance characteristics, the development of such a model was not the objective of the investigation since other models already exist for these calculations. Instead, a model was needed which can make relative angular corrections to bidirectional reflectance measurements independent of the details of surface geometry. The …

A Method For The Determination Of Surface Emissivities Of Multispectral Data In The 8 Μm - 13 Μm Region, W. H. Carnahan, S. N. Goward Jan 1977

A Method For The Determination Of Surface Emissivities Of Multispectral Data In The 8 Μm - 13 Μm Region, W. H. Carnahan, S. N. Goward

LARS Symposia

The authors have developed a method to determine emissivities and kinetic temperatures of land cover materials through analysis of multispectral remote sensor measurements in the 8 - 13 µm spectral regions. Simultaneous measurements from two spectral regions of the 8 - 13 µm thermal infrared spectral region are ratioed to determine surface emissivities following the method proposed by Vincent and Thomson. Assuming that emissivity is constant in the 8 - 13 µm region, surface emissivities and kinetic temperatures may be computed. A zero band width approximation of the integrated gray-body radiance is evaluated to facilitate computer processing. The authors discuss …

A Landsat Agricultural Monitoring Program, A. C. Aaronson, P. E. Buchman, T. Wescott, R. E. Fries Jan 1977

A Landsat Agricultural Monitoring Program, A. C. Aaronson, P. E. Buchman, T. Wescott, R. E. Fries

LARS Symposia

A Landsat Agricultural Monitoring Program (LAMP) was established to monitor Iowa's corn crop in near real-time. The Program utilized Landsat data in conjunction with collateral data sources to monitor crop development and identify/assess anomalies and crop stress. Throughout the growing season, data were screened manually and by computer for indications of crop condition. Alarms were generated by weather related events and/or by changes in the satellite imagery. These alarms were then assessed as to their nature, extent, severity and projected impact on crop production. Landsat digital data, coupled with specially gathered collateral data, were used to update this initial alarm …

A Four-Dimensional Histogram Approach To The Clustering Of Landsat Data, Morris Goldberg, Seymour Shlien Jan 1977

A Four-Dimensional Histogram Approach To The Clustering Of Landsat Data, Morris Goldberg, Seymour Shlien

LARS Symposia

Unsupervised classification of LANDSAT imagery can be accomplished very efficiently by using a four-dimensional histogram in table form. The clustering scheme isolates the peaks in the distribution which are used as cluster centers to classify the remaining vectors in the histogram. The general outlines of this scheme, detailed description and programming implementation are given together with flow diagrams. The program has been implemented on both DEC PDP-10 and DEC PDP-11/40 computers. A discussion of the extension of the algorithm to other than LANDSAT imagery is also given.

Isursl Levels Classification: A Low Cost Approach To Multispectral Data Analysis, Richard F. Hyde, Samuel N. Goward, Paul W. Mausel Jan 1977

Isursl Levels Classification: A Low Cost Approach To Multispectral Data Analysis, Richard F. Hyde, Samuel N. Goward, Paul W. Mausel

LARS Symposia

The Indiana State University Remote Sensing Laboratory (ISURSL) recognized that the promise of low-cost earth resource evaluation through machine-assisted processing of multispectral (MS) data has not been fully realized. In response to this problem the ISURSL has developed a complete low-cost system of processing MS data which minimizes analysis time for both man and computer while simultaneously maximizing utilization of the data. The basis of the ISURSL classification algorithm, designated LEVELS CLASSIFIER, is identification of numeric boundaries located in multidimensional feature space which differentiate features of interest. Land use classes of interest to an analyst are described by the range …

Comparing Soil Boundaries Delineated By Digital Analysis Of Multispectral Scanner Data From High And Low Spatial Resolution Systems, S. J. Kristoff, Marion F. Baumgardner, A. L. Zachary, Eric R. Stoner Jan 1977

Comparing Soil Boundaries Delineated By Digital Analysis Of Multispectral Scanner Data From High And Low Spatial Resolution Systems, S. J. Kristoff, Marion F. Baumgardner, A. L. Zachary, Eric R. Stoner

LARS Symposia

Aircraft and Landsat data were used with computer-aided techniques to delineate soils patterns of a field of 40 ha in a transition zone between soils developed under deciduous forest and those developed under prairie vegetation. Two computer-aided classification techniques, supervised and nonsupervised, were employed in classifying soils of the study area. The means and covariance matrix statistics were obtained for every cluster or soil class through the statistics algorithm. Each cluster of aircraft and Landsat data was identified and assigned to a specific soil type by correlating the cluster soil patterns with a standard soils map of the test site …

Evaluation Of Change Detection Techniques For Monitoring Coastal Zone Environments, R. A. Weismiller, S. J. Kristof, D. K. Scholz, P. E. Anuta, S. M. Momin Jan 1977

Evaluation Of Change Detection Techniques For Monitoring Coastal Zone Environments, R. A. Weismiller, S. J. Kristof, D. K. Scholz, P. E. Anuta, S. M. Momin

LARS Technical Reports

Development of satisfactory techniques for detecting change in coastal zone environments is required before operational monitoring procedures can be established. In an effort to meet this need a study was directed toward developing and evaluating different types of change detection techniques, based upon computer-aided analysis of Landsat multispectral scanner (MSS) data, to monitor these environments.

Four change detection techniques were designed and implemented for evaluation: a) post classification comparison change detection, b) delta data change detection, c) spectrali/temporal change classification, and d) layered spectral/temporal change classification.

The post classification comparison technique reliably identified areas of change and was used as …
