Cooperation Of Hungarian Technological University Libraries On The Field Of Scientific Information Services And The Special Features Of The Veszprém University Library's Activity, Zoltan Kováts
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Cooperation between Hungarian TU libraries has been established long ago. The services rendered, however, do not include all kinds of library activities, nor compensate each other. In order to stabilize long range cooperations, uncompensated services must be paid on a price, which assures not only reimbursement of all direct costs, but allows some premium to the librarians concerned. The Veszprém University Library supplies information services also to an extended group of various users, not only other Hungarian TU libraries. The service oriented organization, which does not include the conventional documentation and publishing activities is a special feature of the Veszprém …

Co-Operation In The Provision Of Services To Readers In Conurbations, A. C. Bubb
Co-Operation In The Provision Of Services To Readers In Conurbations, A. C. Bubb
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Co-operation should lead to greater reader satisfaction.
Large urban areas may have more than one university and other institutions of higher education, each possessing its own library, along with public and special libraries, all lying within a fairly small geographical area.
To students and research workers ease of access to a variety of libraries in the area seems attractive and the relative usefulness of their services important.
Undergraduates should naturally expect to have most of their needs satisfied in their own institution, but graduate students and staff may often expect to use other libraries in the neighbourhood.
It is the …
New Aspects And Trends In Interlending In The Federal Republic Of Germany, Jurgen Heydrich
New Aspects And Trends In Interlending In The Federal Republic Of Germany, Jurgen Heydrich
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The situation in West Germany is described. More than 500 libraries have been accepted as interlending libraries. A change in the use of interlibrary lending is noted. The differences between librarians and end users in interest in and attitudes to interlending is described. The main part of the paper deals with existing Union Catalogues, Indexes, both central, regional and local; databanks and what is being done in the field of data processing for interlibrary loans, as well as German participation in international networks. The Sondersammelgebiet Programm SSG (German Subject Specialized Libraries) are treated, as these play an important part in …

Library Cooperation: Trends, Possibilities And Conditions, James E. Skipper
Library Cooperation: Trends, Possibilities And Conditions, James E. Skipper
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Arguments supporting library cooperation are compelling in their logic and economic implications, yet a review of the history of cooperative efforts suggests the existence of strong opposing forces whlch, in many instances, have frustrated planning and implementation.
Successful programmes for the cooperative development of library collections must be related to ancillary efforts to improve access to materials and to afford better bibliographic control.

Cooperation In Library And Information Service - The Role Of Intergovernmental Organisations, Elin Tornudd
Cooperation In Library And Information Service - The Role Of Intergovernmental Organisations, Elin Tornudd
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Numerous intergovernmental organisations (IGO) sponsor programs in the library and information field. These programs proliferate to the extent that there is a danger of duplication of efforts. Especially in small countries participation has to be limited to programs of highest priority, because a limited number of senior specialists cannot take the responsibility for countless projects.
The IGO programs in library and information service are reviewed briefly with special reference to those of interest to technological university libraries. The following organisations are mentioned:
- 1. The United Nations Family
- 1.1 UNESCO, UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation
- 1.2 ECE, UN Economic Commission …
Is Cooperation A Good Thing?, Maurice B. Line
Is Cooperation A Good Thing?, Maurice B. Line
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Instead of assuming that cooperation is desirabie and then considering how to cooperate, librarians should analyse their aims and functions and consider how cooperative approaches compare for cost-effectiveness with 'going it alone' and dependence on a central service.
The acquisition function of libraries must be largely fulfilled by local provision. This must be supported from other sources, but cooperative acquisition schemes are expensive to administer and less effective than central provision or state-funded concentration of resources on a few libraries.
It has yet to be proved that cataloguing and classification in most libraries need be detailed, or that libraries cannot …

California Desert Resource Inventory Using Multispectral Classification Of Digitally Mosaicked Landsat Frames, Nevin A. Bryant, Ronald G. Mcleod, Albert L. Zobrist, Hyrum B. Johnson
LARS Symposia
Time and budget constraints have precluded the use of conventional mapping techniques for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to produce a comprehensive resource inventory of the California deserts region as mandated by the California Desert Conservation Act. A Landsat mosaic at full resolution for ten scenes over the California deserts region was used to provide a continuous data base for multispectral thematic classification. Procedures for adjustment of brightness values between frames and the digital mosaicking of the Landsat frames to standard map projections were developed for this task and are discussed.
The principle of transect sampling was adopted as …
Using Guided Clustering Techniques To Analyze Landsat Data For Mapping Forest Land Cover In Northern California, Lawrence Fox, Kenneth E. Mayer
Using Guided Clustering Techniques To Analyze Landsat Data For Mapping Forest Land Cover In Northern California, Lawrence Fox, Kenneth E. Mayer
LARS Symposia
Three approaches to computer assisted Landsat multispectral classifications are described. The supervised classification technique enables the analyst to focus on land cover categories of interest. The unsupervised approach uses the statistical properties of the image to identify spectrally pure classes. Guided clustering combines the characteristics of both approaches to develop the maximum number of low variance classes for each land cover category defined.
The application of guided clustering to forest land classification is explained. EDITOR software was used to merge and edit spectral statistics to produce the maximum number of low variance, statistically separate classes. Color-infrared aerial photography was used …

Elevation Of Ventricular Defibrillation Threshold In Dogs By Antiarrhythmic Drugs, Charles F. Babbs, Gkw Yim, S J. Whistler, W A. Tacker, L A. Geddes
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Effects of antiarrhythmic drugs upon the threshold delivered energy (TDE) and threshold peak current (TPC) for electrical ventricular defibrillation by damped sinusoidal shocks were investigated in 25 pentobarbital-anesthetized dogs. TDE and TPC were increased by the three antiarrhythmic drugs tested. Bolus injections produced a transient rise, and continuous infusions produced a steady rise in defibrillation threshold. The maximal percent elevations in mean defibrillation threshold during the 60 minutes after intravenous drug treatment in groups of n = 5 dogs were: Treatment % increase in TDE % increase in TPC Lidocaine bolus (3 mg/kg) 48 26 Lidocaine (0.5 mg/Kg/min) 99 45 …
Landsat Mss Coordinate Transformations, Berthold K. P. Horn, Robert J. Woodham
Landsat Mss Coordinate Transformations, Berthold K. P. Horn, Robert J. Woodham
LARS Symposia
A number of image analysis tasks require the registration of a surface model with an image. In-the case of satellite images, the surface model may be a map or digital terrain model in the form of surface elevations on a grid of points. We develop here an affine transformation between coordinates of Multi-Spectral Scanner (MSS) images produced by the Landsat satellites, and coordinates of a system lying in a plane tangent to the earth's surface near the sub-satellite (Nadir) point.

Mapping And Estimating Areal Extent Of Severely Eroded Soils Of Selected Sites In Northern Indiana, C. E. Seubert, M. F. Baumgardner, R. A. Weismiller, F. R. Kirschner
LARS Symposia
The importance of soil conservation and the devastating effects of soil erosion have been noted throughout recorded human history. In the United States it has been estimated that up to two-thirds of the nation's cropland is losing soil at rates up to 5 tons/A (11 mt/ha) while nearly 15% is losing more than 10 ton/A (22 mt/ha) per year. The Soil Conservation Service of the USDA and the Environmental Protection Agency are actively engaged in programs to reduce soil loss and subsequent stream pollution. Rapid methods of pinpointing areas undergoing accelerated erosion are needed to assist in these efforts.

Computer Recognition Of Citrus Infestations, D. H. Williams, J. K. Aggarwal
LARS Symposia
A computer software system is described that uses digitized color information from aerial color infrared transparencies to detect the a presence of citrus mealybug (Pseudococcus citri Risso), brown soft scale (Coccus hesperidum L.), and Rio Grande gummosis in individual citrus trees. The color coordinates at each spatial point, and color differences at adjacent points are used to locate the trees and to detect the infestations; and compensation is made for the variation in color characteristics between different transparencies. The system requires the input of four parameters: a flag denoting the presence of heavy shadows in the image, nominal tree size …

An Interactive Color Display System For Labelling Crops, Toyohisa Kaneko, Linda K. Moore, Robert T. Smart
LARS Symposia
To perform classification on remotely sensed imagery data, a small number of pixels or fields need to be labelled. It has been found that this labelling task requires many auxiliary materials such as crop calendar, soil data, cropping practice and a weather summary. This task is at the present time manually performed by photo-interpreters. It is time-consuming and liable to human error. The paper describes a computer based interactive color display system for assisting photointerpreters. Its objective is to reduce contact time and to increase labelling accuracy. This system has been designed to extract features from a temporal series of …
