One-Dimensional Wave Propagation In Relatively Stiff, Partially Reticulated Acoustical Foams, J Stuart Bolton, Ergad Gold
One-Dimensional Wave Propagation In Relatively Stiff, Partially Reticulated Acoustical Foams, J Stuart Bolton, Ergad Gold
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
Recently the authors have conducted measurements of the acoustic properties of a relatively stiff (in vacuo bulk modulus of elasticity greater than air) partially reticulated (i.e., some of the cell membranes remained intact) polyurethane foam of the type often used in noise control applications. The results were interpreted by using a theory governing one‐dimensional wave propagation in elastic porous materials [G. S. Rosin, Sov. Phys. Acoust. 19, 60–64 (1973)] which was extended to account for frequency‐dependent viscous and thermal effects. The parameters of the theoretical model (flow resistance, structure factor, frame bulk modulus of elasticity, and loss factor, etc.) …

Some Prototype Examples For Expert Systems V.3, K. S. Fu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
This report consists of the nineteen term project reports for the graduate-level course EE695G ” Expert Systems and Knowledge Engineering”, which was offered for the fall semester of 1984 in the School of Electrical Engineering. The purpose of the term project is to provide each student an opportunity of designing and implementing a prototype expert system. The application area of each of these expert systems was selected by the student(s) working on the projects. This report is published for the purpose of documenting these results for future reference by the students of the above-mentioned course and, possibly, other workers in …

Multiple Scattering And Attenuation Phenomena In Diffraction Imaging, Mani Azimi, A. C. Kak
Multiple Scattering And Attenuation Phenomena In Diffraction Imaging, Mani Azimi, A. C. Kak
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
The problem of cross sectional (tomographic) imaging bf objects with diffracting sources is addressed. Specifically the area of investigation is the effect of multiple scattering and attenuation phenomena in diffraction imaging. The validity of either the Born or the Rytov approximations is the basic assumption behind all the inverse scattering techniques in diffraction tomography. To test these techniques When these assumptions are not satisfied, we have developed a computational procedure for the calculation of the “ true” scattered fields from a multi-component object. Using this procedure, the performance of two available diffraction reconstruction techniques is examined in the presence of …

Imaging With Diffraction Tomography, Malcolm Slaney, A. C. Kak
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
The problem of cross sectional (tomographic) imaging bf objects with diffracting sources is addressed. Specifically the area of investigation is the effect of multiple scattering and attenuation phenomena in diffraction imaging. This work reviews the theory and limits of first order diffraction tomography and studies iterative techniques that can be used to improve the quality of tomographic imaging with diffracting sources. Conventional (straight-ray) tomographic algorithms are not valid when used with acoustic or microwave energy. Thus more sophisticated algorithms are needed; First order diffraction tomography uses a linearized version of the wave equation and gives an especially simple reconstruction algorithm. …

Report On Solar Energy Conversion Through The Interaction Of Plasmons With Tunnel Junctions, R. J. Schwartz, S. Datta, P. E. Welsh
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
This report covers the work performed under grant NAG 3-433, “Solar Energy Conversion Through the Interaction of Plasmons with Tunnel Junctions,” during the period from June 1,1983 to December 31, 1984. Personnel performing the work were Prof. R J. Schwartz, Prof. S. Datta and Graduate Research Assistant P. E. Welsh. Much of the detail of the work described in this report is covered in a Master’s Thesis submitted by P. E. Welsh to the School of Electrical Engineering, Purdue University, December 1984.
Politics And Scholarship In Seventeenth-Century France: The Library Of Nicolas Fouquet And The College Royal, E. Stewart Saunders
Politics And Scholarship In Seventeenth-Century France: The Library Of Nicolas Fouquet And The College Royal, E. Stewart Saunders
Libraries Research Publications
Nicolas Fouquet, superintendent of finance for Louis XIV, created in the 1650s a library second only to Cardinal Mazarin's in its size, scope, and scholarly content. Inherited from his father in 1640 and built at first around Fouquet' s personal interests in history and belles-lettres, it was greatly expanded in the late 1650s to accommodate the needs of the scholars and men of letters attached to Fouquet and to add luster to his political career as the successor to Mazarin. Fouquet, however, never succeeded Mazarin as first minister but was imprisoned by Louis XIV as a result of a power …
Writing A Scientific Paper Prior To The Research, Charles F. Babbs, Martha M. Tacker
Writing A Scientific Paper Prior To The Research, Charles F. Babbs, Martha M. Tacker
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
The traditional approach to preparing a research report for publication is to begin writing after the study has been completed. We propose another approach- to write a "zeroth" draft before the study is begun. This approach helps to focus the investigator's attention during the planning stage on critical aspects of the study. The discipline of writing down the rationale, the methods, and the variety of possible outcomes and their significance helps to clarify the logic on which the study is based. If these are acceptable to all authors and colleagues in the zeroth draft, it is likely that the research …

Gastric Insufflation During Iac-Cpr And Standard Cpr In A Canine Model, Charles F. Babbs, William E. Schoenlein, Marc W. Lowe
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
This study was undertaken to determine the effect of interposed abdominal compressions (IAC) during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on gastric insufflation when the airway is not secured with an endotracheal tube. A canine model was used in which a common ventilation pressure was applied to separate cuffed esophageal and tracheal tubes. Gas entering the stomach was collected by a pre-placed gastrostomy tube leading to a bell spirometer. Gas entering the lungs was measured with a Wright Respirometer® in series with the endotracheal tube. During standard CPR, measurable gastric gas volume was collected in 28 of 30 trials (mean 215 93 …
