Emulating A Cisc With Gaas Bit-Slice Components, Erin Handgen, Bryan Robbins Apr 1988

Emulating A Cisc With Gaas Bit-Slice Components, Erin Handgen, Bryan Robbins

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Currently, complex instruction set computers (CISCs), are used in a wide variety of applications ranging from desktop computers to aircraft guidance systems. The amount of software available for these CISCs is rather large, and exists in both high-level language and assembly language forms. However, some system designers may need CISCs that are more environmentally tolerant and/or faster than current silicon processors, and may be looking towards GaAs as a possible solution. Aerospace engineers and defense engineers are among this elite group. Some areas where the advantages of GaAs are needed over current Si technology include stabilization and control, telemetry, and …

Coordinated Motion Control Of Multiple Robotic Devices For Welding And Redundancy Coordination Through Constrained Optimization In Cartesian Space, Shaheen Ahmad, Shengwu Luo Mar 1988

Coordinated Motion Control Of Multiple Robotic Devices For Welding And Redundancy Coordination Through Constrained Optimization In Cartesian Space, Shaheen Ahmad, Shengwu Luo

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this paper we consider the problem of coordinating multiple motion devices for welding. We focus on the problem of coordinating a positioning table and a seven axis manipulator, given the parametric definition of a trajectory on a weld piece. The problem is complex as there are more than nine axis involved and a number of permutations are possible which achieve the same motions of the weld torch. The system is redundant and the robot has singular configurations. As a result, manual programming of the robot system is rather complex. Our approach to the coordination problem is based on subdivision …

A Rapid, Widely Applicable Screen For Drugs That Suppress Free Radical Formation In Ischemia/Reperfusion, Steven C. Salaris, Charles F. Babbs Jan 1988

A Rapid, Widely Applicable Screen For Drugs That Suppress Free Radical Formation In Ischemia/Reperfusion, Steven C. Salaris, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Substantial injury can occur during reoxygenation of previously ischemic tissue in many experimental models, as the result of the generation of oxygen-derived free radicals. To test the antiradical activity of potentially protective compounds in this setting, we developed a simple screening system, applicable to fresh biopsy specimens, in which warm ischemia and reoxygenation of excised tissue are performed in vitro. Tissue production of malondialdehyde (MDA) equivalents is used as a nonspecific-but-sensitive marker of oxygen radical damage. Test compounds with putative antiradical activity are added prior to the reoxygenation phase, and their ability to suppress MDA production is an index of …

Evidence For Band-Gap Narrowing Effects In Be-Doped, P-P+ Gaas Homojunction Barriers, H. L. Chuang, Paul David Demoulin, M. E. Klausmeier-Brown, Michael R. Melloch, Mark S. Lundstrom

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The electrical performance of Be‐doped, p‐p+ GaAs homojunction barriers is characterized and analyzed. The results of the analysis show that minority‐carrier electrons, at 300 K, have a mobility of 4760 cm2/V s at a hole concentration of 2.3×1016 cm−3, and that the effective recombination velocity for these homojunction barriers is about 6×104 cm/s. We present evidence that this unexpectedly high recombination velocity is a consequence of an effective reduction in band gap due to the heavy impurity doping. The effective band‐gap shrinkage in this Be‐doped material grown by molecular‐beam epitaxy appears to be comparable to that already …
