The Purdue Workshop on Grand Challenges in Computer Architecture fbr the Support of High Performance Computing was held at Purdue University on December 12 and 13, 1991. The workshop was sponsored by the National Science Foundation to identify critical research topics in computer architecture as they relate to high performance computing. After a wide-ranging discussion of the computational characteristics and requirements of the grand challenge applications, four major architectural challenges were identified as crucial to advancing the state of the art of high performance computation in the coming decade. These computer architecture grand challenges are summarized below. Challenge I : …
A Practical Approach To Ll(K); Llm(N), Terence J. Parr, Henry G. Dieb
A Practical Approach To Ll(K); Llm(N), Terence J. Parr, Henry G. Dieb
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In terms of recognition strength, LL techniques are widely held to be inferior to LR parsers. The fact that any LR (k) grammar can be rewritten to be LR (I), whereas LL(k) is stronger than LL (I), appears to give LR techniques the additional benefit of not requiring k-token lookahead and its associated ovehead. In this paper, we suggest that LL(k) is actually superior to LR (1) when translation, rather than acceptance, is the goal. Further, a practical method of generating efficient LL(k) parsers is presented. This practical approach is based on the fact that most parsing decisions in a …
Adaptive Control Of Kinematically Redundant Robots, Shengwu Luo,, Shaheen Ahmad, Mohamed Zribi
Adaptive Control Of Kinematically Redundant Robots, Shengwu Luo,, Shaheen Ahmad, Mohamed Zribi
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
A redundant robot has more degrees of freedom than what is needed to uniquely position the robot end-effector. In a usual robotic task, only the end-effector position tr'ajectory is specified. The joint position trajectory is unknown, and it must be selected from a self-motion manifold for a specified end-effector. In many situations the robot dynamic parameters such as link mass, inertia and joint viscous friction are unknown. The lack of knowledge of the joint trajectory and the dynamic parameters make it difficult to control redundant robots. In this paper, we show through careful problem formulation that the adaptive control of …

Bayesian Signal Reconstruction From Fourier Transform Magnitude In The Presence Of Symmetries And X-Ray Crystallography, Peter C. Doerschuk
Bayesian Signal Reconstruction From Fourier Transform Magnitude In The Presence Of Symmetries And X-Ray Crystallography, Peter C. Doerschuk
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In Ref. [I] a signal reconstruction problem motivated by x-ray crystallography was solved using a Bayesian statistical approach. The signal is zero-one, periodic, and substantial statistical a priori information is known, which is modeled with a Markov random field. The data are inaccurate magnitudes of the Fourier coefficients of the signal. The solution is explicit and the computational burden is independent of the signal dimension. In Ref, [2] a detailed parameterization of the a priori model appropriate for crystallography was proposed and symmetry-breaking parameters in the riolution were usecl to perform data-dependent adaptation of the estimator. The adaptation attempts to …

Hydro-Acoustic Communication System Based On A Neural Network Error Corrector, M. F. Tenorio, R. Z. Machado F., J. R. M. Silva
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
This study describes an application of Neural Networks for transmission errors identification and correction in binary messages. The network is used as a classifier of detected hydro-acoustic signals into one of a possible alphabet of symbols. The algorithm used is a Hamming-type Neural Networks classifier associated with the transmission of a Hamming code. This system can detect and correct all transmission errors if the number of errors is less than or equal to half the Hamming distance between transmitted symbols minus one. Symbols to be transmitted are chosen and associated to messages, assuring that bit to bit non similarities result …

Manual Of Traffic Impact Studies : Draft, Soumya Sekhar Dey, Jon D. Fricker
JTRP Technical Reports
With intensification urban development and dwindling public resources, assessing the impacts of a new development (traffic impact analysis) is becoming an important planning tool for transportation engineers, so that the traffic impacts of new developments can be foreseen and effective mitigating measures can be planned using optimal allocation of the available funds. The study establishes a detailed and standardized methodology for traffic impact analysis. Although the procedure was developed for the Indiana Department of Transportation, it can be used by other transportation agencies as well with little or no modification.
