Effects Of Salt And Trace Minerals For Bituminous Pavement Literature Review, Information Gathering, And Research Plan Development, Robert Allan Pittenger, Terry R. West Jan 1995

Effects Of Salt And Trace Minerals For Bituminous Pavement Literature Review, Information Gathering, And Research Plan Development, Robert Allan Pittenger, Terry R. West

JTRP Technical Reports

A review of current literature on the effects of deicing salt and trace minerals, such as sulfate, on aggregate deterioration was conducted. Such deterioration in both Portland cement concrete, and bituminous pavements was reviewed. For Portland cement concrete, it was determined that current research on the effects of moisture and deicing salt on aggregates concrete matrix durability, with little discussion on the effects on aggregates. The effects of trace minerals in deicing salt are also rarely discussed. Pore size distribution, insoluble residue, absorption, and susceptibility to alkali-silica reaction all appear to affect aggregate durability in the presence of moisture of …

Predicting Traffic Impacts At Two-Lane Highway Work Zones, Michael J. Cassidy, Youngtae Son Jan 1995

Predicting Traffic Impacts At Two-Lane Highway Work Zones, Michael J. Cassidy, Youngtae Son

JTRP Technical Reports

Maintenance or reconstruction activity on a two-lane highway often requires a lane closure. The implementation of “one-way traffic control,” required to maintain traffic flow throughout the work zone, typically produces significant motorist delay. This report describes the adaptation and application of queuing models, originally derived for intersections controlled by vehicle-actuated traffic signals, to estimate delay at two-lane highway work zones. The models estimate expected delay as a function of directional traffic demand rates, work zone physical length and observed traffic measures. Validation efforts using simulation suggest that the models accurately predict the impacts of two-lane highway lane closures.

Use Of Time Domain Reflectometry For Determination Of Water Content An Density Of Soil, Shafiqul I. Siddiqui, Vincent P. Drnevich

JTRP Technical Reports

A new method is developed for measuring in-place density and moisture content of soil using the technique of Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR). The method is applicable for construction control of earthworks. The method is extended for measuring moisture content of soil in the laboratory and in the field for various other geotechnical purposes. Laboratory uses include measuring moisture content of soil in compaction molds; field uses include measuring moisture content of soil in Shelby tubes and soil retrieved during drilling and sampling operations. In the course of achieving these goals, this study develops the principles of TDR probe design, test …

Influence Of Blood Flow And Vasoactive Drugs Upon Tissue Temperature Distributions In Local Hyperthermia Therapy, Charles F. Babbs Dec 1994

Influence Of Blood Flow And Vasoactive Drugs Upon Tissue Temperature Distributions In Local Hyperthermia Therapy, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers

Effective local hyperthermia for cancer requires selective elevation of intratumoral temperature without overheating of surrounding normal tissues. Temperature elevation depends upon the balance between absorbed power density, which heats the treated tissue, and blood perfusion, which cools it. Selectivity can be achieved by manipulations of vascular physiology to increase blood cooling of normal tissues or to decrease blood cooling of tumor tissue. Creation of a favorable normal-to-tumor blood flow ratio is possible because the small blood vessels supplying most tumors are structurally and functionally different from the microvasculature of normal tissues. Normal arterioles dilate in heated tissues to raise local …

An Overview Of Flexible Ac Transmission Systems, P. Asare, T. Diez, A. Galli, E. O'Neill-Carillo, J. Robertson, R. Zhao Dec 1994

An Overview Of Flexible Ac Transmission Systems, P. Asare, T. Diez, A. Galli, E. O'Neill-Carillo, J. Robertson, R. Zhao

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

FACTS or "flexible AC transmission systems" is a term that has been suggested for the use of solid state devices to control bulk power flow in transmission systems. The Electric Power Research Institute supported this idea, and many researchers have invested efforts on the value and potential of FACTS. At this time, it appears that the main value of FACTS lies in improving transmission capability; increasing the flexibility of power flow control (e.g., for wheeling or for economic dispatch); for controlling voltage (and var flow); and possibly additional advantages in lower voltage systems (e.g., distribution systems). This report is an …

A Prototype Computational Phantom To Create Digital Images For Research And Training In Diagnostic Radiology, Charles F. Babbs Nov 1994

A Prototype Computational Phantom To Create Digital Images For Research And Training In Diagnostic Radiology, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers

Research in the processing, compression, transmission, and interpretation of digital radiographic images require the testing and evaluation of a wide variety of images, varying both in format and in spatial resolution. If receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis or a related method is used to evaluate the performance of observers using novel vs. conventional displays, large numbers of test images containing known abnormalities are required. This report describes a convenient, inexpensive, and reproducible source of test images, having any desired resolution and containing precisely defined abnormalities of unlimited subtlety. The images are generated by computing x-ray transmission through mathematically defined, three …

Design And Analysis Of Transmitter Diversity Using Intentional Frequency Offset For Wireless Communications, Wen-Yi Kuo, Michael P. Fitz Nov 1994

Design And Analysis Of Transmitter Diversity Using Intentional Frequency Offset For Wireless Communications, Wen-Yi Kuo, Michael P. Fitz

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Coded modulation (usually with interleaving) is used in fading channel cornmunications to achieve good error performance. The major benefit froin using coded modulation in fading channels is achieved if each code symbol of a codeword (or coded sequence) suffers statistically different fading (preferably independent fading). However, in many applications of mobile communications (e.g. in a metropolitan environment), a low vehicle speed (and hence a small Doppler spread) is very common. With a small Doppler spread, ideal or close-to-ideal interleaving is no longer feasible and all code symbols of a codeword would suffer highly correlated fading especially in stationary fading (Doppler …

Tree Structured Grobner Basis Computation On Parallel Machines, Hemal V. Shah, Jose A. B. Fortes Oct 1994

Tree Structured Grobner Basis Computation On Parallel Machines, Hemal V. Shah, Jose A. B. Fortes

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

With the advent of symbolic mathematical software packages such as Maple, Mathematics, and Macsyma, symbolic computation has become widely used in many scientific applications. Though a significant effort has been put in performing numeric computation on multiprocessors, symbolic computation on parallel machines is still in an unexplored state. However, symbolic mathematical applications are ideal candidates for parallel processing, because they are computationally intensive. This paper considers the parallel computation of Grobner basis, a special basis for a multivariate polynomial ideal over a field that plays a key role in symbolic computation. Large Grobner basis computation poses a challenging problem due …

Scheduling A Superscalar Pipelined Processor Without Hardware Interlocks, Heng-Yi Chao, Mary P. Harper Sep 1994

Scheduling A Superscalar Pipelined Processor Without Hardware Interlocks, Heng-Yi Chao, Mary P. Harper

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this paper, we consider the problem of scheduling a set of instructions on a single processor with multiple pipelined functional units. In a superscalar processor, the hardware can issue multiple instructions every cycle, providing a fine-grained parallelism for achieving order-ofmagnitude speed-ups. It is well known that the problem of scheduling a pipelined processor with uniform latencies, which is a subclass of the problem we consider here, belongs to the class of NP-Complete problems. We present an efficient lower bound algorithm that coniputes a tight lower bound on the length of an optimal schedule, and a new heuristic scheduling algorithm …

Automatic Test Reordering For Electrical And Thermal Stress During Monitored Burn-In, Kaushik Roy, Rabindra K. Roy, Abhijit Chatterjee

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

As the complexity of VLSI circuits increases, the semiconductor manufacturers progress towards in-situ monitored burn-in to improve the quality and reliability of their products. A new method is proposed to control the switching current drawn by a CMOS circuit during burn-in ancl test applications. This is based on reordering of the test vector is such that the circuit activity or electrical stress is modified as specified by the designer or the quality control engiineer during monitored burn-in. Results on several ISCAS-89 benchmarks show that the current (or power dissipation) requirement of a circuit can be changed by more than a …

Statistics Of The Scattering Cross Section Of A Collection Of Constant Amplitude Scatterers With Random Phase, Jihad S. Daba, Mark R. Bell Jul 1994

Statistics Of The Scattering Cross Section Of A Collection Of Constant Amplitude Scatterers With Random Phase, Jihad S. Daba, Mark R. Bell

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Complex radar targets are often modeled as a number of individual scattering elements randomly distributed throughout the spatial region containing the target. While it is known that as the number of scatterers grows large, the distribution of the scattered signal power or intensity is asymptotically exponential, this is not true for a small number of scatterers. We study the statistics of measured power or intensity, and hence scattering cross section, resulting from a small number of constant amplitude scatterers, each having a random phase. We first derive closed form expressions for the pdf of the scattered signal inte.nsity, and then …

Implementing A Hidden Markov Model With Duration Modeling On The Maspar Mp-1, C. D. Mitchell, L. H. Jamieson, M. P. Harper, R. A. Helzerman

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This paper describes the parallel implementation of a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) for spoken language recognition on the MasPar MP-1. A major drawback of using HMMs for speech recognition is the amount of processing time required to develop and test the model. By exploiting the massive parallelism of explicit duration HMMs, we can develop more complex models for real-time speech recognition. Implementational issues such as choice of data structures, method of communication, and utilization of parallel computation functions will be explored. The results of our experiments show that the parallelism in HMMs can be effectively exploited by the MP-1. Training …

Selected Topics On Demand Side Management, S. Alyasin, L. Chung, D Gotham, D. Hu, B. Kwon, J. Lee, A. Mok, A. Risal, R. Sasaki

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Each year in the graduate course on "Economic Dispatch and Control of Integrated Power Systems," the students prepare a term project which is assembled into a report. This year, the assigned topic relates to demand side management. This topic appears to be especially timely and, because it relates to the revenue derived by the electric utility. The term demand side management (DSM) refers to modification of power system demand by some means in order to obtain better load factor characteristics. The study of DSM has many unresolved issues - many stem from the fact that the electric utility industry is …

Dynamic Barrier Architecture For Multi-Mode Fine-Grain Parallelism Using Conventional Processors Part 11: Mode Emulation, W. E. Cohen, H. G. Dietz, J. B. Sponaugle

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Parallel computers constructed using conventional processors offer the potential to acheve large improvements in execution speed at reasonable cost, however, these machlnes tend to efficiently implement only coarse-grain MIMD parallelism. To achieve the best possible speedup through parallel execution, a computer must be capable of effectively using all the different types of parallelism that exist in each program. A combination of SIMD, VLW. and MIMD parallelism, at a variety of granularity levels, exists in most applications; thus, hardware that can support multiple types of parallelism can achieve better performance with a wider range of codes. In the companion paper [CoD94], …

Papers: Purdue's Adapter For Parallel Execution And Rapid Synchronization, H. G. Dietz, T. Muhammad, J. B. Sponaugle, T. Mattox

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

There are a lot of 386/486/Pentium-based personal computers (PCs) out there. They are affordable, reliable, and offer good performance. Thus, it is only natural to think of networking multiple PCs to create a high-performance parallel machine - the problem is that conventional networking systems cannot provide low latency synchronization and communication. Low latency allows fine grain parallelism; the longer the latency, the fewer the programs that can achieve good speedup through use of parallelism. Typical parallel machines constructed using PC networks (e.g., PVM software using Ethernet hardware) generally have latencies between 0.001s and 0.1s. Even the "best" commercially-available parallel computers …
