On The Design Of Adiabatic Srams, Yibin Ye, Dinesh Somasekhar, Kaushik Roy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In the design of low-power circuits, adiabatic logic shows great promise. However, research till date have concentrated on adiabatic logic circuits/families. Today's VLSlsystems integrate random logic, megamodules and memories. Hence, the success of adiabatic circuits will depend on the efficient implementation of not only random logic, but also the other components of a VLSI system. In this paper, we present a design of adiabatic Static RAM, which can be implemerited withorit greatly increasing area or circuit complexity. The design addresses the issue of building ultra-low power memory circuits in a VLSI system. Our results for a 41

Optimal Selection Of Supply Voltages And Level Conversions During Low Power Data Path Scheduling, Mark C. Johnson, Kaushik Roy Mar 1996

Optimal Selection Of Supply Voltages And Level Conversions During Low Power Data Path Scheduling, Mark C. Johnson, Kaushik Roy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In t'his paper we will consider how to select an optimal set of supply voltages and account for level conversion costs when optimizing the schedule of a resource domina.ted data path for minimum average power dissipation. Integer linear program (ILP) and non-linear program (NLP) formulations are presented for a minimum power schedule under latency and throughput constraints. Results are presented for several data path topologies under minimum latency constraints and under more relaxed latency constraints. The optimization demonstrated substantial benefit going from one to two supply voltages, but minimal additi, onal benefit from any additional supplies. For example, a Kalman filter …

Extension Of The Receptance Technique To Accommodate Distributed Connections, Bryce K. Gardner, J Stuart Bolton Feb 1996

Extension Of The Receptance Technique To Accommodate Distributed Connections, Bryce K. Gardner, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

The receptance techniques has been used most frequently to analyze the vibrational response of structures that may be idealized as a set of substructures connected at one or more discrete points. However, the receptance technique can also be used to analyze the response of structures connected along particular types of line junctions. In this paper, an extension of the the receptance technique is presented that makes use of a generalized Fourier series approach to allow the evaluation of both the free and forced response of systems comprising components connected through spatially distributed junctions. The present extension is shown to reduce …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) relies heavily on data communications systems to link field equipment such as traflic: sensors, changeable message signs and incident response vehicles with traffic operations centers. The Federal Highway A~iministration (FHWA) has received an allocation of five channels in the 220 MHz band to provide a communication resource for ITS applications. This report investigates a high efficiency mobile \vireless modem with a spectral efficiency of 3 bps&. The modem incorporates the following techniques to compensate for the fading channel: transmitter antenna diversity, modulation using intentional frequency offset, interleaved block codles, symbol timing and frame synchr~mizationo ptimized …

Determinants Of International And Intercultural Human Resource Control: The Case Of Taiwanese Subsidiaries Int He People's Republic Of China, Bih-Shiaw Jaw, John Hannon Jan 1996

Determinants Of International And Intercultural Human Resource Control: The Case Of Taiwanese Subsidiaries Int He People's Republic Of China, Bih-Shiaw Jaw, John Hannon

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This study develops a framework to categorize international and intercultural human resource (IHR) control at the subsidiary level across cultures. The effects of interorganizational interdependencies, competitive strategies, and cultural differences on the three different dimensions of IH control (input, behavior, and output) were studied using a sample of 100 Taiwanese subsidiaries operating in the People's Republic of China. The most notable relationships that were found include a robust association between a low cost competition strategy and the three dimensions of IHR control and the impact of cultural differences on one type of control.

Managing A Network Of Plants Within Multinational Firms, Thomas Brush, Catherine Maritan, Aneel Karnani Jan 1996

Managing A Network Of Plants Within Multinational Firms, Thomas Brush, Catherine Maritan, Aneel Karnani

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

The paper examines whether plants with different roles in a multinational network of plants use different management systems to coordinate production and technical decision. The paper first tests and supports the Ferdows (1989) technology distinctions concerning plant roles. Following Ferdows (1989), it empirically examines the proposition that the degree of managerial autonomy varies according to strategic role of the plant. Our findings suggest that different plant roles require different management systems and different levels of responsibility for decisions. Further, it shows which systems need to be differentiated if plants with different roles are combined within the same business unit.

Implementing Market Access, Kala Krishna, Marie Thursby, Suddhasatwa Roy

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

The outcome of trade policies to increase access for foreign firms to the home country's market is shown to be sensitive to the implementation procedure used. The importance of the timing of moves between government and firms is highlighted by focusing on subsidies to implement minimum market share requirements.

Adjustment And Job Satisfaction As Antecedents Of Intent To Stay: The Case Of Japanese Expatriates In The United States, John M. Hannon, Riki Takeuchi

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

The purpose of this study was to concurrently examine the effects of expatriate adjustment and job satisfaction on intent to stay for a sample of Japanese expatriates. The paper has two airms: (1) to extend the findings of Black and Stephens (1989), who concluded that adjustment is a multidimensional construct comprised of general, interaction, and work adjustment, and (2) to examine the effects of another relevant, yet neglected, explanatory variable, job satisfaction, on intent to stay. Data from a matched-pair set of 119 expatriates and their spouses were used. Several significant relationships were found. First, the multidimensionality of expatriate adjustment …

Antecedents Of Expatriate Spouse Adjustment: An Analysis Of Japanese Spouses In The United States, Riki Takeuchi, John Hannon

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This is one of the first studies investigating factors related to the adjustment of expatriate spouses. The study extends, both conceptually and methodologically, the limited research on spouse adjustment by testing the effects of language profciency and educational level on adjustment. Furthermore, it is the first study to survey non US respondents in their native language. In the end, we found that time since arrival, educational level, language proficiency, and willingness to communicate are directly related to spouse adjustment.

Trade Creation And Trade Diversion: New Empirical Results, Jon D. Haveman, David L. Hummels

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

In recent years, there has been a rise in the popularity of preferential trading arrangements (PTA), and an equally precipitous rise in the number of papers studying the effects of regionalism. In this paper we assess the effect of preferential trading arrangements on the aggregate and bilateral trading patterns of member countries, and test for three effects of PTAs.

Inflation An Asymmetric Price Adjustment, Robert A. Buckle, John A. Carlson Jan 1996

Inflation An Asymmetric Price Adjustment, Robert A. Buckle, John A. Carlson

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This paper uses a unique micro data set to test for the presence of price asymmetries at the firm level. We find that firm pricing is indeed asymmetric, as Tobin (1972) suggested. Moreover, there is strong evidence to support Ball and Mankiw's (1994) suggestion that firm price asymmetry is dependent on inflation.
