Development Of Incident Management Performance Measures Database And Supporting Training Material, Myles W. Overall, Justin Mukai, Rahul Suryakant Sakhare, Jairaj Desai, Hillary Lowther, Edward Cox, James Sturdevant, Darcy M. Bullock

JTRP Technical Reports

Secondary crashes resulting from traffic queues are a significant national safety concern. Traffic Incident Management (TIM), which involves coordinated multi-agency response to roadway incidents, is widely recognized as an effective approach to mitigating these crashes. This study aimed to develop a library of after-action case studies to support TIM training and evaluate current practices. Leveraging connected vehicle data alongside crash reports, camera footage, and dispatch audio, the research compiled 267 comprehensive after-action review reports for incidents across Indiana from June 2020 to March 2025. These reports, indexed by key attributes such as date, location, and incident type, form what is …

Resilient Modulus Improvements To Bases And Subgrades From Geosynthetic Reinforcement, Syed Faizan Husain, Issam Qamhia, Erol Tutumluer, Peter J. Becker Jan 2025

Resilient Modulus Improvements To Bases And Subgrades From Geosynthetic Reinforcement, Syed Faizan Husain, Issam Qamhia, Erol Tutumluer, Peter J. Becker

JTRP Technical Reports

This study investigated the benefits of geogrid stabilization in unbound aggregate base layers and developed a framework to incorporate those benefits into mechanistic–empirical (ME) pavement design. The purpose was to address limitations in current design practices that treat geosynthetic stabilized and non-stabilized bases equivalently, despite evidence of enhanced stiffness and improved stress distribution from a geogrid inclusion. Field testing was conducted along US-20 in Indiana using Automated Plate Load Testing (APLT) device during the construction of three full-scale pavement test sections: control (CS), geogrid installed at the base–subgrade interface (GG1), and geogrid installed at mid-depth (GG2). Pavement instrumentation included Bender …

Worksite Speed Control System (Wscs), Jairaj Desai, Rahul Suryakant Sakhare, John Mcgregor, James Sturdevant, Darcy M. Bullock

JTRP Technical Reports

This study evaluates the effectiveness of Speed Safety Camera (SSC) deployments in reducing traffic speeds through four interstate work zones in Indiana in accordance with Indiana State Law House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1015. The initial deployment of SSC was along interstate I-70 in August 2024, with deployments on I-69, I-465, and I-65 subsequently following in 2025. To evaluate the impact of SSC deployments in Indiana, connected passenger car and connected truck data was used to quantify the change in speed characteristics before and during the SSC deployments. Approximately 100 million passenger vehicle records and 3 million commercial truck records were …

A Computational Framework To Optimize Piezoelectric Power Harvesting From A Uav Wing, Hassan Koko, Gihad Ibrahim Dec 2024

A Computational Framework To Optimize Piezoelectric Power Harvesting From A Uav Wing, Hassan Koko, Gihad Ibrahim

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

This paper proposes a computational framework to optimize the ambient power harvesting from an unmanned air vehicle wing by means of piezoelectricity. First, the wing shape and material are selected based on specific design factors. The wing is then subjected to a vibrational analysis in order to predict the first torsional frequency required to calculate an optimum charging speed. The harvester module is then selected so that the vibration frequency of the charging speed fails within the resonance frequency of the harvester. A finite element modeling is conducted to predict the harvester output voltage during the chagrining speed. Finally, a …

American Public Opinion And Media Representations Of The Crimean War (1853–1856), Anurag Shah Dec 2024

American Public Opinion And Media Representations Of The Crimean War (1853–1856), Anurag Shah

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

During the Crimean War (1853–1856), France and Britain sided with the Ottoman Empire to curb Russian expansion. Though an ocean away, the American public was not only aware of this conflict but often held strong opinions on the war and its participants. American media representations of the Crimean War are indicative of this, and a systematic examination reveals some significant trends in reporting, aligning closely to and providing nuance for larger trends in American history.

The most significant trend in newspaper reporting of the Crimean War was a North-South geographical divide. Northern states supported Britain and France throughout the conflict, …

Where To Build Food Banks: A Machine Learning Approach, Gavin Ruan Dec 2024

Where To Build Food Banks: A Machine Learning Approach, Gavin Ruan

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Over 44 million Americans currently suffer from food insecurity, of whom 13 million are children. Food insecurity has been shown to cause a wide range of both physical and developmental issues. Across the United States, thousands of food banks and pantries serve as vital sources of food and other forms of aid for food-insecure families. By optimizing food bank locations, food banks and their resources would become more accessible to families who desperately require it. The aim of this paper is to build a machine learning framework that is able to optimize food bank locations and to consider factors such …

Predictive Maintenance Analysis Of Turbofan Engine Sensor Data, Stanley A. Melkumian Dec 2024

Predictive Maintenance Analysis Of Turbofan Engine Sensor Data, Stanley A. Melkumian

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Predictive maintenance in aviation and aerospace applications is among the most explored problems in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI), and datasets such as NASA’s C-MAPPS turbofan engine degradation simulation data have proven invaluable, helping researchers explore numerous questions on engine performance, maintenance, and failure. The purpose of this study was to extend the current research on predicting the remaining useful life (RUL) of engines and their risk classification. Starting with simple yet under-investigated nonlinear survival and random forest models, the analysis implemented eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and long short-term memory (LSTM) from TensorFlow’s Keras library. For both regression …
