Results Of The 1971 Corn Blight Watch Experiment, Robert B. Macdonald, Marvin E. Bauer, Richard D. Allen, Joseph W. Clifton, Jon D. Erickson, David A. Landgrebe
LARS Technical Reports
A serious and unexpected epiphytotic of southern corn leaf blight reduced the nation's corn crop by 15 percent as a new race of this previously minor disease swept through the Southern and Corn Belt states during July and August, 1970. The disease appeared so suddenly and moved with such speed that accurate information on its extent and severity was not compiled until well after the end of the growing season.
Research by the Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing (LARS) in 1970 had shown that three stages of blight infection could be accurately classified from small scale color infrared photography …

Data Handling And Analysis For The 1971 Corn Blight Watch Experiment, P. E. Anuta, T. L. Philips, D. A. Landgrebe
LARS Technical Reports
In the summer of 1971 the Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing at Purdue University conducted a pioneering experiment in the application of remote sensing technology to a large scale earth resource surveillance problem. In 1970 a plant disease called the Southern Corn Leaf Blight infected large areas of corn production in the United States and it is estimated that total national corn production pas reduced by 15% due to this disease. In the winter of 1970, an experiment was designed in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, NASA, and the University of Michigan Institute of Science and Technology's …
Land Utilization And Water Resource Inventories Over Extended Test Sites, Roger M. Hoffer
Land Utilization And Water Resource Inventories Over Extended Test Sites, Roger M. Hoffer
LARS Technical Reports
During the past decade, many actual and potential applications for remote sensing technology have been determined. This past year has seen a tremendous amount of interest generated in the application of remote sensing to problem related to land-use. A key element in applying remote sensing to land-use studies involves accurate identification of basic and vegetative cover types. In work with automatic data processing (UP) techniques it is found that as information requirements become more specific, the analysis task becomes more complex. In dealing with many problems involving automatic mapping of vegetative cover types conditions, one finds that an analysis sequence …

LARS Technical Reports
The use of public funds has always been subject to public scrutiny and political log-rolling, but the intensity of this public scrutiny has not been higher any time during the past several decades than it is now. Partly this is due to the less favorable economic situation. However, the more important factors are (a) more awareness of the many public projects (welfare, housing, nutrition, pollution, transportation, etc.) and (b) better methods of accounting for costs and estimating of benefits of such projects. Thus, this high degree of public scrutiny can be expected to persist and perhaps intensify.
Public scrutiny is …

Final Report For The Lars/Purdue - Ibm Houston Scientific Center Joint Study Program, P. E. Anuta, E. M. Rodd, R. E. Jensen, P. R. Tobias
LARS Technical Reports
This report describes work performed during the second part of the LARS/IBM HSC Joint Study program which began April 1, 1971 and terminated April 1, 1972. Work during the first part of the study ending November 30, 1971 concentrated on analysis of the HSC vidicon film scanning system. Included was a comparison of data derived from this system and the LARS/U. of Michigan airborne multispectral scanner system. Comparison of vidicon digitized film and film digitized on a rotating drum microdensitometer was also included. This work is reported in IBM Publication No. 320.2421 "First Interim Progress Report for IBM Houston Scientific …

Determining Density Of Maize Canopy: I. Digitized Photography, E. R. Stoner, M. F. Baumgardner, P. H. Swain
LARS Technical Reports
This research was designed to study the relationship I between different densities of maize (Zea mays L.) canopies and the energy reflected by these canopies. Field plots were laid out, representing four growth stages of maize. Two plot locations were chosen, one on a dark soil and the other on a very light colored surface soil. Spectral and spatial data were obtained from color and color infrared photographs taken from a vertical distance of 10 m above the maize canopies. Estimates of ground cover were made from these photographs and were related to field measurements of leaf area index. Ground …

Field Identification Of Soils And Aggregates For County Roads, D. G. Shurig, Jean E. Hittle
Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Publications
The primary purpose of this bulletin is to provide instruction to Indiana county road personnel on rating the quality of soils and pit-run materials used in the construction and maintenance of county roads. A system of soil classification is presented which provides the county highway engineer, road supervisor and inspector alike, with a common language for identifying soil types, properties and problems.

Guidelines For Traffic Counts On County Roads, Eugene R. Russell, Jean E. Hittle
Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Publications
This manual has been developed to provide county highway personnel with guideline procedures for counting traffic volumes. While the emphasis is on county roads, the procedures are equally applicable to any highway, road or street; therefore, city street and state highway personnel may also have an interest in the guideline procedures outlined herein.
