Use Of Landsat Multispectral Imagery In Estimating Snow Areal Extent And Snow Water Content Cost-Effectively, Siamak Khorram
Use Of Landsat Multispectral Imagery In Estimating Snow Areal Extent And Snow Water Content Cost-Effectively, Siamak Khorram
LARS Symposia
The objective of this investigation is to design a general rate sensing-aided information system to provide the estimates of two important inputs to water yield forecast models. These input parameters are snow areal extent, snow water content, and cost-effectiveness analysis applied to snow water content-estimation. The techniques under development in this investigation are being tested on the water source basin for the California Water Project. This area is known as the Feather River Watershed. With the cooperation of the California Department of Water Resources and the University of California at Davis.
The general approach involves a stepwise sequence of identification …

Results are reported of a three-year study participated in by the Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing of Purdue University, the Center for Advanced Computation of the University of Illinois, and the Geographic Applications "Program of the U.S. Geological Survey. The outcome of the study has been a demonstration of the feasibility of applying digital analysis of satellite data to land use inventory and mapping. Advancements have been made in the areas of data analysis techniques, data processing products, and education and training of personnel within the potential user agency.

The approach of the Statistical Reporting Service (SRS) for using LANDSAT remote sensor data is to use it as an auxiliary variable with existing operational ground surveys. SRS objectives have been to investigate the use of LANDSAT data to improve crop-acreage estimates at several levels for which acreage statistics are needed; such as counties, groups of counties such as Crop Reporting Districts (CRD1s), and entire states.
To determine the feasibility of these objectives, the Illinois crop-acreage experiment was established in 1975. The experiment employs LANDSAT data for the state of Illinois and data from SRS's June Enumerative Survey (JES) for …

Computer Training Procedures For The Western Washington Forest Productivity Study Utilizing Landsat Data, John R. Edwards
LARS Symposia
The Western Washington Forest Productivity Study was a demonstration and application project utilizing Landsat data and multistage sampling techniques to generate inventory data for all forest lands in Western Washington. This project was conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of using Landsat data in a large scale forest inventory and to determine present and expected future timber supply in Western Washington.
The project was undertaken by the State of Washington, Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in conjunction with the Pacific Northwest Regional Commission, with support from NASA/Ames Research Center, and the USGS EROS Program. ESL Inc. of Sunnyvale, California, was contracted …

This report describes the results of a study involving the use of computer-aided analysis techniques applied to Landsat W S data for identification and area estimation of winter wheat in Kansas and corn and soybeans in Indiana. Key elements of the approach included use of aerial photography for classifier training, stratification of Landsat data and extension of training statistics to areas without training data, and classification of a systematic sample of pixels from each county. Major results and conclusions are: (1) Landsat data was adequate for accurate identification and area estimation of winter wheat in Kansas, but corn and soybean …

LANDSAT-1 and -2 multispectral scanner (MSS) data from six overpass dates (April 2, May 17, June 4, July 10, October 17, and December 10, 1975) showed that MSS digital data for bare soil, cloud tops, and cloud shadows followed a highly predictable linear relation (soil background line) for MSS bands 5 and 7 (r2 = 0.974). Increasing vegetation development, documented by leaf area index measurements, for 1973 grain sorghum fields, was associated with displacement of sorghum MSS digital counts away from the soil background line. The LANDSAT data space surrounding the soil background line for MSS5 and MSS7 was divided …

Guidelines For Signing And Marking Of Low-Volume Rural Roads, Ned E. Walton, John M. Mounce, William R. Stockton
Purdue Road School
Existing standards and guidelines for the application of signs and markings are unsuited and inefficient for use on low-volume rural roads (less than 400 A D T ) . T o alleviate this inadequacy, several potentially hazardous situations were evaluated to ascertain actual needs for signs and markings as they relate to economy and safety. These evaluations were based on recent research and on probability of conflict analyses regarding the needs for signing and marking of intersections, horizontal curves, and sections of inadequate passing sight distance. The research revealed that more efficient intersection control can be attained from the careful application …
