Dynamic Intraesophageal Imagining Of The Heart With Ultrasound, N E. Fearnot, Charles F. Babbs, J D. Bourland, L A. Geddes Jan 1980

Dynamic Intraesophageal Imagining Of The Heart With Ultrasound, N E. Fearnot, Charles F. Babbs, J D. Bourland, L A. Geddes

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Real-time images of the heart from within the esophagus are produced by a new intraesophageal ultrasonic sector scanner. Sixty images per second are displayed on a gray scale CRT in real-time and recorded on standard videotape for review. By interactive positioning of the esophageal probe, heart ventricles, atria, and valves can be visualized and their dynamics can be studied. The esophageal probe comprises four 5 MHz PZT-5 piezoelements of 6.35 mm diameter, mounted on a shaft that rotates at 900 rpm. The piezoelements are pulsed at a 5 kHz rate and the echoes are processed electronically.

Bulk Processing Techniques For Very Large Areas: Landsat Classification Of California, Willard Newland, David Peterson, Susan Norman Jan 1980

Bulk Processing Techniques For Very Large Areas: Landsat Classification Of California, Willard Newland, David Peterson, Susan Norman

LARS Symposia

The passage of California forestry bill AB452 created a need to assess and analyze multiresource forest data on a statewide basis. The California Department of Forestry (CDF), in responding to part of this need, formed a cooperative effort with Ames Research Center (ARC) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to prepare a land-cover map of the entire state, emphasizing forest types. This map was produced in less than 1 year, as required, by combining the latest techniques in digital image mosaicking at JPL with the high-speed processing capability available on the ILLIAC IV parallel processor and other computer systems at …

Soil Moisture Sensing With Microwave Radiometers, Thomas Schmugge Jan 1980

Soil Moisture Sensing With Microwave Radiometers, Thomas Schmugge

LARS Symposia

The large difference between the dielectric constant of water and dry soils produces a strong dependence of the dielectric properties, and thus emissivity, of wet soils on their moisture content in the microwave (50 > X > 1 cm) region of the electromagnetic spectrum. This change in emissivity with soil moisture content can be measured remotely with microwave radiometers. The variation of emissivity with soil moisture is dependent on the wavelength (A) of observation, soil type, surface roughness and vegetative cover. These dependencies are discussed both theoretically and experimentally. Results obtained from aircraft and spacecraft platforms are presented which give a positive …

New Opportunities In Soil Survey For Remote Sensing, Raymond Daniels Jan 1980

New Opportunities In Soil Survey For Remote Sensing, Raymond Daniels

LARS Symposia

The basic problem in any field survey is to delineate bodies of similar objects and to make sure that the boundaries between map units are accurate and meaningful. Remotely sensed data cannot replace on-site investigations in soil surveys because the same color patterns, reflectance values, etc., do not always relate to the same kind of soil, even in a local survey area. But remotely sensed data is an extremely valuable tool in extending on-site observations and in locating and extending the boundaries between many map units. Field scientists should have ready access to maps of various scales and origin to …

Cooperation In Library User Education, Nancy Fjallbrant Jun 1979

Cooperation In Library User Education, Nancy Fjallbrant

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The aim of this paper is to examine which areas of user education are particularly suitable for interlibrary cooperation. Goals and objectives for user education are described. Examples of cooperative projects are given: the SCONUL project, the travelling workshop experiment, and multimedia program mes for on-line information retrieval. Clearing houses for information on library user education projects are then surveyed. Finally, possible areas for future cooperative projects are discussed.

To Cooperate Or Not To Cooperate, Michael W. Hill Jun 1979

To Cooperate Or Not To Cooperate, Michael W. Hill

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Cooperation on practical projects, as distinct from that on intellectual ones, poses a number of managerial and administrative problems which are not encountered in in-house projects or work contracted out to agencies. If, therefore, the project is to be successful, it is necessary to identify all these additional factors before starting and to ensure that the requirements of each will be satisfactorily met. The longer the project is likely to last, the more important it is to be sure that it is designed to cope with factors such as defection of one of the partners or the need to adapt …

Teaching Library Co-Operation To Library Students, Ben Rugaas Jun 1979

Teaching Library Co-Operation To Library Students, Ben Rugaas

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This paper discusses the need for cooperation between libraries, and the forms this may take with examples of both formal and informal cooperation. The author conc1udes that the profession of library and information science is in a state of change and that the library schools must try to train librarians for the future situation. With regard to library cooperation, any library school will have problems in teaching and motivating students for something that does not seem to exist in the real world of libraries. When it comes to promoting library cooperation, through education, there are problems on both the cognitive …

The Swedish Libris System, Lennart Gardvall May 1979

The Swedish Libris System, Lennart Gardvall

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The ADP-system LIBRIS-II is described with emphasis on its network structure. The connection of 10 libraries within the organization under the National Swedish Board of Universities and Colleges (UHÄ) and four other libraries is outlined. The coverage of acquired literature in the connected llbrarles is discussed, as well as the extension of the coverage which is achieved by a decentralized reporting of accessions in a large number of other Swedish research and special libraries to the Royal Library which submits centralized input to the system. Three possible models are presented how to offer access for searches to LIBRIS outside the …

Cooperation Of Hungarian Technological University Libraries On The Field Of Scientific Information Services And The Special Features Of The Veszprém University Library's Activity, Zoltan Kováts May 1979

Cooperation Of Hungarian Technological University Libraries On The Field Of Scientific Information Services And The Special Features Of The Veszprém University Library's Activity, Zoltan Kováts

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Cooperation between Hungarian TU libraries has been established long ago. The services rendered, however, do not include all kinds of library activities, nor compensate each other. In order to stabilize long range cooperations, uncompensated services must be paid on a price, which assures not only reimbursement of all direct costs, but allows some premium to the librarians concerned. The Veszprém University Library supplies information services also to an extended group of various users, not only other Hungarian TU libraries. The service oriented organization, which does not include the conventional documentation and publishing activities is a special feature of the Veszprém …

Cooperation Between The Establishments Of Higher Education In Lausanne, T. J. Tanzer May 1979

Cooperation Between The Establishments Of Higher Education In Lausanne, T. J. Tanzer

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The city of Lausanne houses two Establishments of Higher Education, the University of Lausanne and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne.

While the university has a broader spectrum of subjects taught, certain, notably mathematics and the exact sciences, are taught at both. The boards of governors have mandated a study of the possibility of cooperation by the two libraries. The paper presents the exact situation in Lausanne, the implications for immediate close cooperation under an orthodox system and indicates where closer cooperation could be achieved with an automated system.
