Remote Sensing Education: A Special Report On The Conference Of Remote Sensing Educators - Corse-81, T. M. Lillesand

LARS Symposia

CORSE-81, Conference On Remote Sensing Education, was held May 18-22, 1981, at Purdue University. Co-sponsored by NASA and NOAA, the conference was organized and conducted by the Purdue University Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing (LARS). Attended by approximately 200 educators from a broad range of disciplines, CORSE-81 represented the first national conference in the U.S. dealing solely with the topic of remote sensing education.

This paper is an attempt to summarize the major trends and issues in remote sensing education which crystallized from the presentations and discussions of CORSE-81. These include: 1) a profile (by discipline) of remote sensing …

Landsat Digital Analysis: Implications For Wetland Management, Virginia Carter, Kevin A. Richardson Jan 1981

Landsat Digital Analysis: Implications For Wetland Management, Virginia Carter, Kevin A. Richardson

LARS Symposia

Wetland management needs include requirements for both overall wetland planning and management by local, state, regional and national agencies and internal management of large wetlands. Landsat digital data can potentially supply management information such as location, area, wetland type, seasonal extent of surface. Inundation changes in vegetative composition and thus wildlife habitat potential, impact of construction or water-level control and information for wetland evaluation. However, at present (1981), Landsat classification accuracies for wetland type or vegetation are often as low as 70 percent. These generally unsatisfactory results are due to Landsat resolution, spectral and spatial heterogeneity of wetlands and vegetative …

Sensitivity Of Geographic Information System Outputs To Errors In Remotely Sensed Data, H. K. Ramapriyan, R. K. Boyd, F. J. Gunther, Y. C. Lu Jan 1981

Sensitivity Of Geographic Information System Outputs To Errors In Remotely Sensed Data, H. K. Ramapriyan, R. K. Boyd, F. J. Gunther, Y. C. Lu

LARS Symposia

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the sensitivity of Geographic Information System outputs to errors in inputs derived from Remotely Sensed Data (RSD). The attention is restricted to outputs of suitability models with "per cell" decisions with gridded Geographic Data Bases (GDB) whose cells are larger than the RSD pixels. The procedure for merging RSD into such GDB's involves classification, registration and aggregation. The first two steps introduce errors at individual pixels and the last step tends to compensate for such errors.

The classification and registration errors are treated independently for the purposes of analysis. Under certain simplifying …

Physical Principles Of Local Heat Therapy For Cancer, Charles F. Babbs, David P. Dewitt Jan 1981

Physical Principles Of Local Heat Therapy For Cancer, Charles F. Babbs, David P. Dewitt

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Local hyperthermia therapy for cancer can produce selective heating of solid tumors on the basis of known physical laws. If energy is deposited in the general region of the tumor, temperature tends to develop in the tumor higher than that in surrounding normal tissues. The goal of therapy is to achieve cytotoxic temperature elevations in the tumor for an adequate period of time, without damaging nearby normal tissues. Several modalities exist for local heat treatment, of which radiofrequency and ultrasound offer the most promise for controlled, localized heating at depth. A paucity of blood flow in the tumor compared to …

Remote Sensing: Its Role In Meeting Information Needs, Richard S. Driscoll Jan 1981

Remote Sensing: Its Role In Meeting Information Needs, Richard S. Driscoll

LARS Symposia

The Resources Planning Act, as amended by the National Forest Management Act, the Resources Conservation Act, and the Federal Land Policy and Management Act, all require periodic assessments and appraisals of the renewable resource situation and the development of action plans to accomplish efficient and effective resource management. These assessments and appraisals occur at 5-10 year intervals. They require continuous updating of the renewable resource situations obtained through inventory of which remote sensing must play a significant role.

Generally, information requirements for renewable resource assessments include: (1) area, extent, geographic location, and structure of vegetation types; (2) ecological successional stages …

Problems On Data Structuration About Paleontological Collections, Daniel Pajaud, Marie-Jose Roulet

LARS Symposia

The paleontological collections of the University Pierre et Marie Curie (more than 800 000 samples, 4 x 10^6 data) present a complex structure relevant to nine themes: Classification, Stratigraphy, Geography, Environment, Paleontological Material, Collecting, Bibliography, Storage, Exploitation. The complexity of the data requires a sophisticated model of data structure for archiving in a data bank.

Acceptability On Non-Library/Information Science Publications In The Promotion And Tenure Of Academic Librarians, Priscilla Geahigan, Harriet Nelson, E. Stewart Saunders, Lawrence Woods Jan 1981

Acceptability On Non-Library/Information Science Publications In The Promotion And Tenure Of Academic Librarians, Priscilla Geahigan, Harriet Nelson, E. Stewart Saunders, Lawrence Woods

Libraries Research Publications

If library/information science is a true academic discipline, then academic librarians must reevaluate the acceptability of publications in other fields if they are to be considered academic faculty members in the field of library/ information science. This was perceived to be the issue by the Purdue University Library faculty when they altered the tenure and promotion document to require that consideration for promotion and tenure be based on publication in library/information science. The issue has been raised by the growing number of librarians with non-library/information science Ph.D.s who prefer to publish in the area of their Ph.D. A survey of …

Alternatives To The Shelflist Measure For Determining The Size Of A Subject Collection, E. Stewart Saunders, Harriet Nelson, Priscilla Geahigan Jan 1981

Alternatives To The Shelflist Measure For Determining The Size Of A Subject Collection, E. Stewart Saunders, Harriet Nelson, Priscilla Geahigan

Libraries Research Publications

The adequacy of the shelflist count for estimating the size of a library’s holdings in a discipline was tested by determining the percentage of titles in five disciplines which were classified in Dewey or LC classes reflecting those disciplines. For some disciplines, the percentage of titles which were not classified in the relevant class letters or numbers ran as high as 70 and 80 percent. Two methods for correcting inaccurate shelflist counts are presented.

Techniques For Evaluation Of Area Estimates, Marilyn M. Hixson Jan 1981

Techniques For Evaluation Of Area Estimates, Marilyn M. Hixson

LARS Symposia

Since the launch of the first Landsat satellite in 1972, satellite remote sensing has been increasingly recognized as a tool for mapping and area estimation of earth resources. The Landsat MSS records a region on the ground about one acre (0.5 ha) in size. This provides a good spatial resolution for mapping purposes, and Landsat data have been used for mapping such characteristics as general land use and soil type. Estimation of the areal extent of a feature has been a key use of Landsat data. The primary uses for area estimation have been in agriculture with crop and forest …

Registration Of Digital Imageries Using Optimization Technique, A. D. Kulkarni, B. L. Deekshatulu, K. R. Rao Jan 1981

Registration Of Digital Imageries Using Optimization Technique, A. D. Kulkarni, B. L. Deekshatulu, K. R. Rao

LARS Symposia

Registration is an important aspect of any image processing system. Registration may be interpreted as automatic determination of local similarity between two structured data sets. Several digital techniques have been used for registration. Principal among these are cross-correlation, normalized cross-correlation and minimum distance criteria. Fast algorithms like sequential similarity detection for translational differences have been developed. In all the above methods, a portion of one image is taken as reference and similar portion in the other image is located by carrying out a search over the other image. There may be translational, rotational and scale differences between the two imageries. …

Techniques To Update A Land Management Information System With Landsat, C. A. Nelson, D. E. Meisner, B. Smekofski Jan 1981

Techniques To Update A Land Management Information System With Landsat, C. A. Nelson, D. E. Meisner, B. Smekofski

LARS Symposia

The Minnesota State Planning Agency has developed a geographically referenced Land Management Information System which is being used extensively for planning purposes. Land use categories in the system were originally coded from aerial photographs; this method is inefficient for updating the large-area data base. Landsat data and many computer-assisted techniques are available to analyze the classification system and to update the land use data base. The data derived from a Landsat analysis could be used to supplement the existing data base and to complement detailed interpretations of aerial photographs.

This study had as its primary objective an evaluation of computer …

Mechanics Of Monitoring Forest Clearcuts And Their Regeneration, M. S. Gregory, S. J. Walsh, Jan Vitek Jan 1981

Mechanics Of Monitoring Forest Clearcuts And Their Regeneration, M. S. Gregory, S. J. Walsh, Jan Vitek

LARS Symposia

A framework for the identification and monitoring of forest clearcuts and their regeneration is presented. LANDSAT digital data are classified to detect clearcuts and their major regeneration components, including brush, grass, bare soil, and conifer. Historical LANDSAT digital data are used to provide a change detection analysis of forest conditions. Area summaries of land cover are obtained for the entire study area or for subunits. A graphic digitizer is used to provide an overlay to the LANDSAT, digital land cover classification in order to summarize land cover area by physical and/or political boundaries. Individual clearcuts are analyzed within each summary …

Computer Generated Maps From Digital Satellite Data: A Case Study In Florida, L. G. Arvanitis, R. M. Reich, R. Newburne

LARS Symposia

The availability of satellite data and the advantages offered by automatic machine-processing of such data have opened up new and exciting possibilities for developing ground cover maps. Two Landsat analyses techniques (an unsupervised clustering algorithm called Landsat Signature Development Program, and an interactive method based on the Multispectral Image Analyzer) are used to compare computer generated character maps to known earth surface features. Data samples are shown and applications are discussed. Reference is made to the value of the digital computer in natural and man-made features mapping and monitoring, and suggestions are given for further research.

What's Happening To The World's Forest Resources, James J. Talbot Jan 1981

What's Happening To The World's Forest Resources, James J. Talbot

LARS Symposia

This paper discusses the current information base available on global forest resources. The focus includes: the extent of forest cover based on the most widely-used data base; the accuracy of this data base; other estimates of forest resources; the special case of tropical forests; the extent to which deforestation in the tropics is factored into the global forest resource estimates; and emerging patterns of demand and utilization of forests. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of what information is needed to obtain a more comprehensive assessment of forest resource status.

Strategies For Information -- Directed Wetlands, Norman E. G. Roller Jan 1981

Strategies For Information -- Directed Wetlands, Norman E. G. Roller

LARS Symposia

Protection and effective management of wetlands requires information describing their type, distribution, and condition. Inventories are carried out to obtain such information. The efficiency of inventories that produce statistical information can be improved by the use of remote sensing because the synoptic observation capabilities of remote sensors, particularly Landsat, make it possible to nearly eliminate sampling error. The information furnished by inventories designed to produce maps can be extended through the use of digital data manipulation techniques to include (1) quantitative measures of the spatial arrangement of a resource and (2) detection of changes in a resource over time.

Computer-Based Classification Accuracy Due To The Spatial Resolution Using Per-Point Versus Per-Field Classification Techniques, Richard S. Latty, Roger M. Hoffer

LARS Symposia

The 42.5 microradian angular IFOV of the Thematic Mapper will provide a linear spatial resolution of approximately 30 meters from the nominal altitude of 710 km. This study determined the classification accuracies achieved with MSS data of four different spatial resolutions using two different types of classifiers.

The data were obtained on May 2, 1979 with the NASA NS-001 Thematic Mapper Simulator (TMS) over an area in northeastern South Carolina from a height above ground of 5945 meters. Data sets simulating three different spatial resolutions were computed from the original 15 meter nominal spatial resolution data. The classification accuracies achieved …
