Education For Self-Control: Some Similarities Between Dewey’S Experience And Education And Locke’S Theory Of Rational Agency, Atli Harðarson Nov 2023

Education For Self-Control: Some Similarities Between Dewey’S Experience And Education And Locke’S Theory Of Rational Agency, Atli Harðarson

Education and Culture

One of the themes that runs through Dewey’s Experience and Education is an argument to the effect that education aims at self-control. The details of this argument reveal close affinity between Dewey’s philosophy of education and the ideals of the Enlightenment. They are also strikingly similar to John Locke’s thoughts about freedom and education published in the seventeenth century. Comparison of their texts shows that Dewey and Locke worked with similar distinctions between positive and negative freedom. They both saw freedom and guidance as compatible, and conceived of self-control as dependent on autonomy-friendly habits instilled through education.

Deweyan “Soul” As Conceived In His Early Work, Becky L. Noël Smith, Randy Hewitt Nov 2023

Deweyan “Soul” As Conceived In His Early Work, Becky L. Noël Smith, Randy Hewitt

Education and Culture

The term “soul” is found throughout John Dewey’s work, particularly when discussing self-realization and meaningfulness. Soul can be easily associated with religious connotations, and yet it is well accepted that he did not imply such. So, then, what did he mean? In his early writings, he shifted away from theologically inspired language and toward a conception composed in naturalized terms. This, no doubt, can be confusing to uninitiated readers. While extensive analyses have been written on his philosophy of spirit and metaphysics, they can leave one wondering: what is a conception of soul that is consistent with Dewey’s philosophy of …

Canceling, Liberty, And The Dangers To Education, Mordechai Gordon Nov 2023

Canceling, Liberty, And The Dangers To Education, Mordechai Gordon

Education and Culture

This essay explores with the help of the discipline of philosophy of education the educational implications of the practice of canceling individuals or ideas. In particular, it investigates what gets lost or undermined when we cancel various opinions, words, and practices. To advance my argument, I first introduce some basic definitions while analyzing the problem with the notion of cancel culture. Then, I briefly review various historical examples of canceling going back to Socrates. The next part of this paper presents some of the philosophical arguments against canceling and restricting speech made by John Stuart Mill. After presenting Mill’s contentions …

Facilitating Uav Application For Cav Deployment, Shuya Zong, Yujie Li, Sikai Chen, Shaoshuai Mou, Samuel Labi

Center for Connected and Automated Transportation

Connectivity-equipped UAVs offer communication opportunities within CAV ecosystems. This study was motivated by challenges in UAV-based monitoring: (a) at intersections where road user trajectories could be irregular, leading to traffic conflicts or collisions, and (b) during inclement weather where video images are often corrupted by falling rain streaks thus impairing the integrity of the image. In response to these challenges, the study developed and demonstrated the efficacy of (a) an algorithm for UAVs to predict vehicle trajectories at intersections and (b) a 2-stage self-supervised algorithm for enhancing the quality of UAV-sourced images. Both parts of the study highlight the UAV …

Cost-effective ways to obtain and distribute traffic data, and thereby, to facilitate operations decisions. This includes a need to make Signal Phase and Timing (SPaT) and MAP data more useful to traffic data end-users. Existing data collection and delivery methods are time consuming and costly. Therefore, to facilitate traffic operations in the current era of human-driven vehicles (HDVs) and the prospective era of connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs), this research developed a device to acquire, process, and disseminate SPaT data from Traffic Signal Controller (TSC) cabinets in a manner that ensures system integrity and yet fosters accessibility of timing information for …

A Framework For Examining The Relationship And Classifying Instructional Strategies, Methods, And Techniques, Victoria L. Lowell, Lucia Urena-Rodriguez Oct 2023

A Framework For Examining The Relationship And Classifying Instructional Strategies, Methods, And Techniques, Victoria L. Lowell, Lucia Urena-Rodriguez

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Globally, educators and researchers use different terms to describe instructors’ approaches when presenting instructional material in formal and informal settings. Terms commonly used to describe instructional approaches include teaching/instructional strategy, teaching/instructional method, and teaching/instructional technique. Although practicing educators and researchers use these words interchangeably, they have different meanings, leading to confusion regarding the relationship between these approaches and their proper usage when describing instructional practices. The research-to-practice gap in all fields exacerbates the issue, as practitioners and researchers may use different terms. As a result, there is a need for consistency in the terms used to describe instructional approaches across …

Drawing on servicescape theory, this research investigates guests’ perceptions of and responses to the protection and prevention practices launched by hotels at different stages of the pandemic. The research finds that hotel guests’ general response-efficacy beliefs positively influence their perception of the effectiveness of the protection and prevention practices adopted in hotels’ physical and social servicescapes, and such positive relationships also show a significant increase from 2020 to 2021. The servicescape effects’ downstream results show that hotel guests are willing to pay premium prices for safety servicescapes manifested as protection and prevention practices implemented at the private space or related …

Challenging The Notion Of Role Models In Engineering Outreach Programs For Youth, Kelli M. Paul, Karen Miel, Merredith D. Portsmore, Adam Maltese Oct 2023

Challenging The Notion Of Role Models In Engineering Outreach Programs For Youth, Kelli M. Paul, Karen Miel, Merredith D. Portsmore, Adam Maltese

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Engineering outreach programs often portray outreach educators as role models for youth. It is widely believed that introducing youth, especially girls, to potential engineering role models will broaden participation in engineering majors and careers. Based on interviews with and surveys of fourth- and fifth-grade girls participating in an engineering outreach program, we question whether youth are looking for career role models, and we challenge the assumption that youth will take up an adult as a role model simply because the adult is presented as such. We question what role these ‘‘models’’ play in the minds and lives of youth and …

Tellurium Corrosion Of Type 304/304l Stainless Steel, Iron, Chromium, And Nickel In High-Temperature Liquid Sodium, Yi Xie Oct 2023

Tellurium Corrosion Of Type 304/304l Stainless Steel, Iron, Chromium, And Nickel In High-Temperature Liquid Sodium, Yi Xie

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Investigating tellurium (Te) corrosion on structural materials is crucial for sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs) due to radionuclide presence and knowledge gaps. In this study, Type 304/304L stainless steel (SS304), chromium (Cr), iron (Fe), and nickel (Ni) samples were immersed in low-oxygen environments with Te in liquid sodium at 773 K for 30 days. At 10 ppm oxygen, SS304 showed multiple oxide layers, including a compact NaCrO2 interlayer and porous Na-Fe-Ni-O outer layers. Tellurium penetrated through the porous layers but was hindered by the NaCrO2 interlayer. At 0.01 ppm oxygen, Cr had no oxide layer, while Fe and Ni had unstable …

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

We utilize a coupled economy–agroecology–hydrology modeling framework to capture the cascading impacts of climate change mitigation policy on agriculture and the resulting water quality cobenefits. We analyze a policy that assigns a range of United States government’s social cost of carbon estimates ($51, $76, and $152/ton of CO2-equivalents) to fossil fuel–based CO2 emissions. This policy raises energy costs and, importantly for agriculture, boosts the price of nitrogen fertilizer production. At the highest carbon price, US carbon emissions are reduced by about 50%, and nitrogen fertilizer prices rise by about 90%, leading to an approximate 15% reduction in fertilizer applications for …

Vistac Toward A Unified Multimodal Sensing Finger For Robotic Manipulation, Sheeraz Athar, Gaurav Patel, Zhengtong Xu, Qiang Qiu, Yu She

School of Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications

Tactile sensors are crucial in providing contact geometry information necessary for object manipulation. However, it remains highly nontrivial for a tactile sensor to be able to perceive a distant object before manipulation. In this work, we present an innovative robotic finger, VisTac, which seamlessly combines high-resolution tactile and visual perception in a single unified device, while adhering to essential mechanical constraints, such as a human-finger-like wedge-shaped top, vital for manipulation tasks. Furthermore, we discuss the fabrication of a key component in the device; the semitransparent membrane with light-dependent opacity, thus enabling the contact surface to effortlessly transition between visual and …

Review Of Fighting Invisibility: Asian Americans In The Midwest. Rutgers University Press, Xiang Zhou Oct 2023

Review Of Fighting Invisibility: Asian Americans In The Midwest. Rutgers University Press, Xiang Zhou

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

Despite the imperative to shed light on the experiences of Asian Americans residing in the Midwest, previous research has predominantly centered around Asians residing on the coasts. This phenomenon, as elucidated by Erika Lee in her concept of “doubly invisible” Midwest Asian Americans, highlights their dual marginalization—they are not only conspicuously absent from mainstream literature but also from the broader discourse on Asian American experiences, which primarily revolves around those on the East and West coasts. However, it is within the heartland of America that we witness one of the most profound transformations in Asian America over the past few …

On Gary Snyder’S Tradaptation Of Cold Mountain Poems And Its Spiritual Salvation And Literary Enlightenment In Postwar America, Hu Anjiang Oct 2023

On Gary Snyder’S Tradaptation Of Cold Mountain Poems And Its Spiritual Salvation And Literary Enlightenment In Postwar America, Hu Anjiang

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Cold Mountain Poems (CMPs), which have been neglected in the history of Chinese literature for ages, captured the attention of most Americans immediately after its being translated into America by the American poet Gary Snyder in 1950s, however. It is Snyder that reconfigured and recreated a sagacious Chinese Chan Buddhist poet Han-shan (literally, Cold Mountain), the acknowledged author of Cold Mountain Poems, in his translation for the postwar Americans in the midst of varied social problems and cultural identity crisis after World War II. Snyder eventually found in his translation of Cold Mountain Poems a back-to-nature remedy of …

Westernization Or Localization? The (Mis)Reading Of “The Tragic” In Modern Chinese Literary Discourse, Tian Gu Oct 2023

Westernization Or Localization? The (Mis)Reading Of “The Tragic” In Modern Chinese Literary Discourse, Tian Gu

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

This paper examines the features and causal factors in constructing an idea of the tragic in modern Chinese literary discourse. It attempts at revisiting and reproducing the realities of misreading and variation upon modern Chinese introduction of the term “tragedy” (beiju) at different socio-historical periods, and has observed the interplay between two trends, namely, Westernization and localization, through the negotiation of “the tragic” into modern Chinese literary practice. These two trends have been integrated by a political and pragmatic perspective, which dominates the formation of a modern Chinese literary discourse on “the tragic”. This perspective offers both possibility …

Children’S Gothic In The Chinese Context: The Untranslatability And Cross-Cultural Readability Of A Literary Genre, Chengcheng You Oct 2023

Children’S Gothic In The Chinese Context: The Untranslatability And Cross-Cultural Readability Of A Literary Genre, Chengcheng You

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

As an emerging literary subgenre in the twenty-first century, Children’s Gothic challenges and blends the norms of both children’s literature and Gothic literature, featuring child characters’ self-empowerment in the face of fears and dark impulses. The foreignness and strangeness that pertain to the genre haunt the border of its translatability. Daniel Handler’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (1999–2006), written under the pseudonym Lemony Snicket, poses a chain of translational challenges due to its linguistic creativity, paratextual art, and mixed style of horror and dark humor intended for a child readership. To investigate the interplay between Children’s Gothic and its (un)translatability …

Translating Literary Ideology From Ancient Chinese Into Modern French: François Cheng’S Francophone Poetry In Double Chant (2000), Gabriel F. Y. Tsang

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

François Cheng (1929- ), elected to the Académie Française in 2002, structurally introduced the lexicological, syntactic, and semiotic form of Tang poetry to the French academia via his academic works. In the late 1980s, François Cheng shifted his focus from academic writing to creative writing, both in French, winning the 1998 Prix Femina for his novel Le Dit de Tianyi (1998) and Prix Roger Caillois for his collection of poems Double chant (2000). Focusing on his less-discussed poetry, which reveals higher congruity of his understanding of Chinese literary classics with creative representation, this paper argues that, as an analyst of …

Storytelling As A Way Of Translation: The Rendition Of Taoism In Ursula K. Le Guin's The Lathe Of Heaven, Xiulu Wang

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Ursula K. Le Guin (1929-2018) is an immensely popular author of numerous science fictions and fantasy classics. A number of critics have noticed the influence of Taoism on Le Guin’s writing.critical insights offered by Translation Studies and Walter Benjamin’s comments on storytelling and translation, this paper argues that storytelling and translation are similar discursive practices that aim at the exchange of experiences, creating knowledge, and shaping culture. Taking Le Guin’s The Lathe of Heaven (1971) as a case study, this paper delves into how her storytelling serves as a unique form of translation, bridging the thought of ancient Chinese Taoist …

Ecopoetry As Method: Reading Gary Snyder As A Cultural Mediator Between China And The World, Winnie L M Yee Oct 2023

Ecopoetry As Method: Reading Gary Snyder As A Cultural Mediator Between China And The World, Winnie L M Yee

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Ecocriticism is a field that is inherently cross-cultural, and poetry is an art form that creates bonds across cultural communities. This paper focuses on Gary Snyder, a prominent poet in his own right, who is famous for his translation of the works by Chinese poet Han Shan. His attraction to Chinese classical poetry and Eastern civilization offers an alternative to the Western developmental paradigm, and the ecopoetry he espouses is pertinent to today’s environmental debates. His references to nature do not function merely as reminders that nature should be respected but as an impetus to reflect on the coexistence of …

Playing With Time: Writing History In Neo-Zionist Hebrew Literature, Huiruo Li Oct 2023

Playing With Time: Writing History In Neo-Zionist Hebrew Literature, Huiruo Li

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

The term neo-Zionism can be used to group ideologically much of contemporary Hebrew literature. However, since neo-Zionism shares similar critical tools with post-Zionism, while also sharing a common political vision with Zionism, it has been difficult to find the definitive signifiers of neo-Zionist writing. This paper offers a way to determine the nuanced ideological inclination of Hebrew literature: the presentation of time. First, this paper recognizes the metamorphosis of time in Israeli literary history that reflects the writers’ historical view of the Zionist agenda. Zionist Hebrew literature was engaged in re-establishing Jewish historical time by emphasizing the relationship between time …
