The Mobility Enterprise - Improving Auto Productivity, F T. Sparrow, Jon D. Fricker, Robert K. Whitford
The Mobility Enterprise - Improving Auto Productivity, F T. Sparrow, Jon D. Fricker, Robert K. Whitford
Purdue Road School
The Mobility Enterprise is a particular version of a shared vehicle fleet, aimed at solving the problem of low automobile productivity. The automobile consumes a large portion of America’s transportation energy supply. It also operates much of the time with unused capacity: vacant seats and empty cargo space. Since programs to fill those vacant seats —ride sharing and high occupancy vehicle incentives —have fallen so far short of their objectives, a new approach is warranted. The enterprise’s central concept is matching vehicle attributes to travel needs. Generally, a household purchases vehicles for those few trips that require a large capacity, …

Student Reliance On Faculty Guidance In The Selection Of Reading Materials: The Use Of Core Collections, E. Stewart Saunders
Student Reliance On Faculty Guidance In The Selection Of Reading Materials: The Use Of Core Collections, E. Stewart Saunders
Libraries Research Publications
ABSTRACT Academic librarians have traditionally built undergraduate core collections based on the suggestions of college faculty and on selection tools such as Books for College Libraries and Choice. The assumption that these materials meet the course related reading needs of undergraduates is founded on the premise that the teaching faculty will provide guidance to their students, either directly or through reading lists, in selecting appropriate books. This study, undertaken in the Purdue University General Library, shows that undergraduates do not depend on teaching faculty as a primary resource to aid in the selection of reading materials from the library nor …

Extension Of Laboratory-Measured Soil Spectra To Field Conditions, E. R. Stoner, M. F. Baumgardner, R. A. Weismiller, L. L. Biehl, B. F. Robinson
LARS Technical Reports
Spectral responses of two glaciated soils, Chalmers silty clay loam and Fincastle silt loam, formed under prairie grass and forest vegetation, respectively, were measured both in the laboratory under controlled moisture equilibria, and in the field under various moisture and crop residue conditions. An Exotech Model 20C spectroradiometer was used to obtain spectral data in the laboratory under artificial illumination. Reflectance measurements ranged from 0.52-to 2.32-µm in 0.01 µm increments. Asbestos tension tables were used to maintain a 0.10-bar moisture equilibrium following saturation of crushed, sieved soil samples. The same spectroradiometer was used outdoors under solar illumination to obtain spectral …
An Evaluation Of Thematic Mapper Simulator Data For Mapping Forest Cover, M. E. Dean, R. M. Hoffer
An Evaluation Of Thematic Mapper Simulator Data For Mapping Forest Cover, M. E. Dean, R. M. Hoffer
LARS Technical Reports
This study evaluated computer-aided analysis techniques applied to Thematic Mapper Simulator (TMS) data for the purpose of mapping forest cover types. Specifically, classification results obtained using a supervised set of training statistics and various combinations of three and four channels subsets of the seven available TMS channels are compared for three classification algorithms: L2, GML, and SECHO. In the analysis, the best three and four channel subsets were determined by minimum transformed divergence criteria. A Karhunen-Loeve or Principal Component linear transformation was applied to the 1979 TMS data set and supervised training statistics were generated for classifying the transformed data. …

A Crops And Soils Data Base For Scene Radiation Research, L. L. Biehl, M. E. Bauer, B. F. Robinson, C. S. T. Daughtry, L. F. Silva, D. E. Pitts
LARS Technical Reports
Development of a crops and soils field research data base was initiated in 1972 at Purdue University's Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing and expanded in the fall of 1974 by the NASA Johnson Space Center as part of the Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment. The primary purpose for the data base is to provide fully annotated and calibrated multispectral sets of spectral, agronomic, and meteorological data for agricultural remote sensing research.
The data base presently includes over 200,000 truck-mounted and helicopter-borne spectroradiometer and multiband radiometer observations and 400 flight lines of aircraft scanner data. These data are supplemented by …

Corn And Soybean Landsat Mss Classification Performance As A Function Of Scene Characteristics, G. T. Batista, M. M. Hixson, M. E. Bauer
LARS Technical Reports
In order to fully utilize remote sensing to inventory crop production, it is important to identify the factors that affect the accuracy of Landsat classifications. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of scene characteristics involving crop, soil, and weather variables on the accuracy of Landsat classifications of corn and soybeans. Segments sampling the U.S. Corn Belt were classified using a Gaussian maximum likelihood classifier on multitemporally registered data from two key acquisition periods. Field size had a strong effect on classification accuracy with small fields tending to have low accuracies even when the effect of mixed …

Equipment For Local Hyperthermia Therapy Of Cancer, Charles F. Babbs, James R. Oleson, John A. Pearce
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Rapid improvements in hyperthermia apparatus are being achieved by industrial and university-based research groups that have already led to the marketing of a variety of commercial systems for heat therapy of malignancy. These tissue heating systems employ microwaves, capacitively or inductively coupled radiofrequency current, or high intensity ultrasound to produce controlled local heating of tumor tissues. No single system is superior to others in all applications; each has its limitations.
Probabilistic Relaxation On Multitype Data, H. M. Kalayeh, D. A. Landgrebe
Probabilistic Relaxation On Multitype Data, H. M. Kalayeh, D. A. Landgrebe
LARS Technical Reports
Classification of multispectral image data based on spectral information has been a common practice in the analysis of remote sensing data. However, the results produced by current classification algorithms necessarily contain residual inaccuracies and class ambiguity. By the use of other available sources of information, such as spatial, temporal and ancillary information, it is possible to reduce this class ambiguity and in the process improve the accuracy.
In this paper, the probabilistic and supervised relaxation techniques are adapted to the problem. The common probabilistic relaxation labeling algorithm (PRL), which in remote sensing pixel labeling usually converges toward accuracy deterioration, is …
