Several Experimental Trials At The Kanazawa Institute Of Technology Library Center Using Its Online System, K. Kadota

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Kanazawa Institute of Technology Library Center (KIT-LC) was established in June 1982 with the aim to collect one million books and ten million informations such as theses, essays etc. For the construction and realization of the LC keen attentions were paid and numerous attempts were made to establish an ideal technological special library in Japan. In other words the KIT-LC is in fact an experimentation in Japan as exemplified in the following seven points:

(1) KIT-LC basically has four functions, namely the educational center and the research center, which are self-evident at any university libraries, the center for the graduate …

The University Library Hannover And Technische Informationsbibliothek As A Library Of Last Resort - Or As A Library Of First Resort. Some Aspects Of The Operation Of The Largest Technical Library In The Federal Republic Of Germany, H. Drubba

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Technische Informationsbibliothek Hannover (TIB) is one of the four central subject libraries in the Federal Republic of Germany. TIB was founded in 1959 and established in Hannover because here a fairly large and comprehensive technical library existed, the present University Library Hannover (UB Hannover).

Both libraries receive among themselves currently about 19.000 serials (among this number many of the Soviet 'Trudy' or 'Sbornik' type series). Not only the literature of technology is collected but also of the basic sciences (mathematics, physics, and chemistry). The serials are collected comprehensively, regardless of language, country of origin, or 'scientific' level, in fact a …

Resource Sharing: The Pesent Situation And The Likely Effect Of Electronic Technology, Maurice B. Line Jun 1983

Resource Sharing: The Pesent Situation And The Likely Effect Of Electronic Technology, Maurice B. Line

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The increasing attention given to resource sharing as a concept is not matched by practical progress; shortage of funds makes it more desirable but less practicable, whether libraries try to share their own resources or share a central facility. Many of the obstacles to sharing, such as limited local resources and the inability to handle much external demand, are intrinsic and cannot be solved by technology, but it can nevertheless alleviate some of the procedural hindrances, such as union list construction, maintenance and access and the transmission and switching of requests. The application of electronic technology to document transmission is …

A National Serials Collection In The Netherlands, J. Zandvliet Jun 1983

A National Serials Collection In The Netherlands, J. Zandvliet

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

A plan has been developed in the Netherlands to share the responsibility for the national science serials collection amongst a large number of libraries. This is an answer to decreasing funding, but it flows from an older tradition of cooperative efforts in interlibrary loans and the union catalogues. For some time, three national subject libraries have worked together in SALINFO, the Science Literature and Information Network, to coordinate the acquisition and cancellation of science periodicals. Seeing that a wider approach was necessary, SALINFO took the initiative to invite more libraries to participate. It became apparant that the key to success …

Computer Analysis Of X-Band Radar Data, D. J. Knowlton, R. M. Hoffer Jan 1983

Computer Analysis Of X-Band Radar Data, D. J. Knowlton, R. M. Hoffer

LARS Technical Reports

Dual polarized X-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data were obtained for a test site in South Carolina containing a variety of forest and agricultural cover types, as well as water and urban areas. The optically correlated images were digitized with a scanning microdensitometer using a 40 µm aperture. Digital registration of the two polarizations was more difficult than anticipated due to geometric variations in the imagery. However, a successful registration was obtained, and a "degraded" 30 m resolution data set was generated in addition to the original 15 m resolution data set.

Computer analysis indicated a statistically significant look-angle effect …

Feature Selection Methodologies Using Simulated Thematic Mapper Data, M. E. Dean, R. M. Hoffer Jan 1983

Feature Selection Methodologies Using Simulated Thematic Mapper Data, M. E. Dean, R. M. Hoffer

LARS Technical Reports

This study investigated computer classification performances for forest and other cover types using Thematic Mapper Simulator (TMS) data collected by NASA's NSOOl scanner. Specifically, results based on the use of a common feature selection measure -- transformed divergence (TD) -- were compared to those based on a principal component transformation for the purpose of evaluating the capabilities of each technique to define: (1) the optimum dimensionality for data sets of this type, and (2) the relative significance of the various wavelength bands with respect to their ability to discriminate among the various cover classes. Expected classification performances as indicated by …

Peopleware: The Most Critical Component Of A Successful Technology Transfer Program, S. M. Davis, L. A. Bartolucci, C. R. Valenzuela

LARS Technical Reports

In the final report of the Independent Commission on International Development Issues, entitled "North-South: A Programme for Survival," it is clearly stated that the search for a solution to the problem of the widening economic disparity between the North and South, between the developed and less developed countries, should "focus not on machines but on people." Historically, the experiences of the advanced countries have demonstrated the importance of skilled human resources in the development process. It has been proven that "natural resource endowment is a necessary, but not a sufficient requirement for progress." The slow rate of development in over …

Simple Methods For Determining The Accuracy Of Tumor Blood Flow Measurements Using Radioactive Microspheres In Rats, Rosanna C. Chan, Charles F. Babbs, Richard J. Vetter Jan 1983

Simple Methods For Determining The Accuracy Of Tumor Blood Flow Measurements Using Radioactive Microspheres In Rats, Rosanna C. Chan, Charles F. Babbs, Richard J. Vetter

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Two simple methods are presented that allow positive identification of the accuracy and precision of the microsphere technique and a quick verification of sphere entrapment in tumor vessels. A known flow of Ringer's solution from a motor-driven syringe is perfused through the rat's isolated systemic circulation from left ventricle to right atrium and collected in a funnel. Using this preparation, total blood flow in rats measured with radioactive microspheres injected into the left ventricle was 97% of actual flow. The coefficient of variation (standard deviation/mean) of the microsphere measurements was 0.22. In the same preparation, non-entrapment of microspheres in subcutaneous …

Improved Oxygen Delivery During Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation With Interposed Abdominal Compressions, William D. Voorhees, Mark J. Niebauer, Charles F. Babbs Jan 1983

Improved Oxygen Delivery During Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation With Interposed Abdominal Compressions, William D. Voorhees, Mark J. Niebauer, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

The ability of a new modification of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to deliver oxygen to tissues was evaluated. The method utilizes standard CPR techniques with the addition of manual abdominal compressions (100 mm Hg) interposed between chest compressions, and is termed interposed abdominal compression-CPR (IAC-CPR). Oxygen delivery was measured by a spirometer in a closed circuit designed to permit positive-pressure ventilation synchronized with mechanical chest compression. Ventricular fibrillation was induced electrically in 10 anesthetized dogs. In each dog, trials of IAC-CPR and standard CPR were alternated every five minutes during a 30-minute period. Arterial and central venous blood pressures, oxygen consumption, …

Relationship Of Blood Pressure And Flow During Cpr To Chest Compression Amplitude: Evidence For An Effective Compression Threshold, Charles F. Babbs, W D. Voorhees, K R. Fitzgerald, H R. Holmes, L A. Geddes Jan 1983

Relationship Of Blood Pressure And Flow During Cpr To Chest Compression Amplitude: Evidence For An Effective Compression Threshold, Charles F. Babbs, W D. Voorhees, K R. Fitzgerald, H R. Holmes, L A. Geddes

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

This study was conducted to investigate the importance of the depth of chest compression in producing effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in animals, as indicated by cardiac output and mean arterial blood pressure. Cardiac output was measured by a modified indicator dilution technique in 8 anesthetized dogs, 6 to 12 kg body weight, during repeated 2-minute episodes of electrically induced ventricular fibrillation and CPR provided by a mechanical chest compressor and ventilator (Thumper®). Chest compression exceeding a threshold value (x0) between 1.5 and 3.0 cm was required in each animal to produce measurable cardiac output. In particular, …
