The Effect Of Edge Constraints On The Surface Normal Impedance Of Layers Of Elastic Porous Materials, N.-M. Shiau, W. Desmet, J Stuart Bolton
The Effect Of Edge Constraints On The Surface Normal Impedance Of Layers Of Elastic Porous Materials, N.-M. Shiau, W. Desmet, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
A two-dimensional model for wave propagation in elastic porous materials has been used to investigate the effects of edge constraints on the surface normal impedance of elastic porous materials when placed in standing wave tubes. The elastic porous material model used was based on the Biot theory and takes into account the three wave-types known to propagate within elastic porous materials. Previous work has indicated that the acoustical behavior of typical noise control foams can be very sensitive to small mounting details. Consequently, it is reasonable to expect that the surface normal impedance measured by placing foam in a standing …

Image Compression And Signal Classification By Neural Networks And Projection Pursuits, M. Fardanesh, O. K. Ersoy
Image Compression And Signal Classification By Neural Networks And Projection Pursuits, M. Fardanesh, O. K. Ersoy
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In this report, two applications of neural networks are investigated. The first one is low bit rate image compression by using neural networks and projection pursuit. The second one is improving the classification accuracy of neural network classifiers by using unlabeled data. In the first part, a novel approach for low bit rate image coding is presented. The image is compressed by first quadtree segmenting the image into blocks of different sizes based on two activity measures , and then constructing a distinct code for each block by invokin~gth e theory of projection pursuit. The two activity measures used in …

Computational Separation Of Bulk And Surface Recombination Using Contactless Photoconductive Decay, Frederick P. Giles, Richard J. Schwartz
Computational Separation Of Bulk And Surface Recombination Using Contactless Photoconductive Decay, Frederick P. Giles, Richard J. Schwartz
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
A novel, computational approach to distinguishing between bulk and surface recombination in crystalline silicon is presented. The Photoconductive Decay technique, applied with a probe of sufficiently long wavelength, senses no informiation about carrier diffusion or distributions in samples, thus isolating carrier recombination as the sole cause of its decay signal. If the recombination and transport parameters of' a sample remain cor~standt uring the decay, the information content and collective properties of the decay paIameters allow them to be solved simultaneously to produce unique values for the bulk lifetime and surface recombination velocities of the measurement sample. The method is rapid …

Wildflowers For Indiana Highways, Michael N. Dana, Ricky Darrell Kemery, Brian S. Boszor
Wildflowers For Indiana Highways, Michael N. Dana, Ricky Darrell Kemery, Brian S. Boszor
JTRP Technical Reports
Questions concerning wildflower usage on Indiana highway rights-of-way were investigated. Native prairie wildflower seed quality was found to be highly variable among supply companies, species, and years. Less variability was found among “garden” wildflower species and suppliers. Direct seeding was found to be successful with six species of native prairie forbs: Butterfly Milkweed Asclepiads tuberose, Wild Bergamot Monarda fistulosa, New England Aster Aster novae-angliae, Pale-purple Coneflower Echinacea pallida, Gray-headed Coneflower Ratibido pinnota, Ironweed Vernonia fasciculosa. Five species of “garden” wildflowers performed well: Common Cosmos Cosmos bipinnatus, Yellow Cosmos Cosmos sulphureus, Cornflower Centaurea cyanus, Goldenwave Coreopsis sincioria, Black-eyed Susan Rudbeckia hiria. …

Bioremediation Treatability Studies For Soils Containing Herbicides, Chemicals, And Petroleum Products, Loring F. Nies, Matthew B. Mesarch
JTRP Technical Reports
Leaking underground storage tanks are widespread throughout the United States. It is estimated that there are 1.4 million underground gasoline storage tanks in the United States, with as many as 75,000 to 100,000 that may be leaking. In Indiana alone, more than 3,500 of the 15,000 registered underground storage tank facilities have reported leaks. Conventional remediation methods often involve pump-and-treat schemes for contaminated water, and excavation and burial of contaminated soil in hazardous waste landfills. These methods increase the risk of exposure to pollutants for workers and local residents. Furthermore, these methods merely involve the transfer of pollutants from one …
Indot Constructability Multimedia System Working Module, Bob G. Mccullouch
Indot Constructability Multimedia System Working Module, Bob G. Mccullouch
JTRP Technical Reports
Constructability can be defined as incorporating knowledge into the design product or designing so it is easier to construct. Transportation facilities have suffered from this problem, with INDOT no exception. The most important feature of any constructability program is capturing field examples, commonly referred to as “lessons learned,” and archiving and retrieving them into future projects that are either similar or have similar conditions in order to eliminate or prevent the same mistakes from occurring again. A mechanism or tool that can perform this task would be a valuable asset for INDOT. A previous JHRP project title “An INDOT Lessons …
Antecedents Of Expatriate Spouse Adjustment: An Analysis Of Japanese Spouses In The United States, Riki Takeuchi, John Hannon
Antecedents Of Expatriate Spouse Adjustment: An Analysis Of Japanese Spouses In The United States, Riki Takeuchi, John Hannon
Purdue CIBER Working Papers
This is one of the first studies investigating factors related to the adjustment of expatriate spouses. The study extends, both conceptually and methodologically, the limited research on spouse adjustment by testing the effects of language profciency and educational level on adjustment. Furthermore, it is the first study to survey non US respondents in their native language. In the end, we found that time since arrival, educational level, language proficiency, and willingness to communicate are directly related to spouse adjustment.
