The Comparative Method And The Study Of Literature, Aldo Nemesio Mar 1999

The Comparative Method And The Study Of Literature, Aldo Nemesio

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Aldo Nemesio argues in his article "The Comparative Method and the Study of Literature" for the comparative method as follows. Contemporary literary research is based on parameters and methods which do not appear to have evolved similar to other fields of inquiry. If the study of literature is concerned with literary behavior, for instance, the object of study cannot limit itself to a single author or to a limited number of authors and what surrounds them closely. Also, national boundaries are too narrow: what happens within the boundaries of a culture can be understood only if we relate it to …

Stores, Prices, And Currency Substitution, Camera Gabriele, Johannes Winkler Jan 1999

Stores, Prices, And Currency Substitution, Camera Gabriele, Johannes Winkler

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

We study endogenous currency substitution in a decentralized trade environment. Sellers maximize profits from sales of imperfectly substitutable goods by posting prices in either one of two currencies. A unique symmetric equilibrium exists where goods are priced only in the local currency. This occurs if foreign trade is sporadic, there is sufficient but not excessive liquidity, and discounting is low. Excess or scarcity of liquidity, however, induces sellers to extract all surplus from buyers. This destroys the monetary equilibrium and shuts down trade. Equilibria with and without currency substitution coexist on some redion of the parameter space, and may be …

Sources Of Dispersion In Inflation Forecasts, John A. Carlson, Neven T. Valev Jan 1999

Sources Of Dispersion In Inflation Forecasts, John A. Carlson, Neven T. Valev

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Cross-section dispersion of expected inflation is often explained by differences in information sets across agents, but there is little empirical evidence attesting to that. The purpose of this paper is to examine whether dispersion in consumer forecasts of inflation is generated by factors such as relative price observations, different perceptions of monetary policy, and personal characteristics. We use unique data from Bulgaria that allow us to examine such effects at the micro level.

Steel Bridge Protection Policy: Evaluation Of Bridge Coating System For Indot Steel Bridges, Luh M. Chang, Tarek Zayed, Jon D. Fricker Jan 1999

Steel Bridge Protection Policy: Evaluation Of Bridge Coating System For Indot Steel Bridges, Luh M. Chang, Tarek Zayed, Jon D. Fricker

JTRP Technical Reports

The study identifies various painting systems that are successfully used in Indiana’s surrounding states and other industries. The identified systems are further screened and evaluated. After prudently comparing INDOT’s inorganic zinc / vinyl system with the waterborne acrylic system, the moisture cure urethane coating system, and the 3-coat system of zinc-epoxy-urethane, the results show that the new 3-coat system fulfills INDOT’s needs with the most benefits. Therefore, the 3-coat system is recommended to replace INDOT present inorganic zinc / vinyl system. To deal with the problems facing the lead-based paint, a comparison between full-removal and over-coating alternatives is made. Results …

Augmented Transition Networks As Semantic Models For Multibaedia Presentations, Multimedia Database Sear.Ching, And Multimedia Browsing, Shu-Ching Chen, R. L. Kashyap

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

As more information sources become available in multimedia systems, the development of abstract semantic models for video, audio, text, and image data becomes very important. An abstract semantic model has two requirements. First, it should be rich enolugh to provide a friendly interface of multimedia presentation synchronization schedules to tlie users. Second, it should be a good programming data structure for implementation to control multimedia playback. An abstract semantic model based on an augmented transition network (ATN) is presented. Tlle inputs for ATNs are modeled by multimedia input strings. Multimedia input strings provide an efficient means for iconic indexing of …

Jitter Control And Dynamic Resource Management For Multimedia Communication Over Broadband Network, Ahmed Bashandy, Edwin Chong, Arif Ghafoor Jun 1998

Jitter Control And Dynamic Resource Management For Multimedia Communication Over Broadband Network, Ahmed Bashandy, Edwin Chong, Arif Ghafoor

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Due to the isochronous nature of multimedia streams, jitter management; represents a major challenge to synchronized and timely presentation of multimedia documents. For controlling jitter, we propose the Initial Delay Regulator (IDR). This regulator is based on a network model which abstracts jitter parameters inside a data network. As a result of employing such a regulator, jitter at the destination node can be reduced. and possibly eliminated. depending on resource availability. The IDR is simple enough to be implemented wing specialized hardware. Since IDR is memory intensive, two dynamic resource allocation schemes are presented for hard and soft QoS requirements. …

The Use Of Poro-Elastic Finite Elements To Model The Structural Damping Effect Of Fibrous Acoustical Treatments, Ron W. Gerdes, Johnathan H. Alexander, Bryce K. Gardner, Heng-Yi Lai, J Stuart Bolton Apr 1998

The Use Of Poro-Elastic Finite Elements To Model The Structural Damping Effect Of Fibrous Acoustical Treatments, Ron W. Gerdes, Johnathan H. Alexander, Bryce K. Gardner, Heng-Yi Lai, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

Recently, new models for limp, fibrous sound absorbing materials have been proposed and verified. It has also been shown that these models may be used to optimize the sound absorption and barrier performance of layered acoustical systems. During that work, it was noticed that layers of fibrous materials can, under some circumstances, provide significant damping when they are applied to panel structures. It has since been shown that that structural damping effect may be predicted analytically by using a modal expansion procedure. The latter approach, however, can only conveniently be applied in circumstances when the vibrating structure has a simple …

Expectations Formation And Inflation Persistence, J. A. Carlson, Neven Tomov Valev Jan 1998

Expectations Formation And Inflation Persistence, J. A. Carlson, Neven Tomov Valev

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This paper studies the dynamics of inflation if monetary policy is transparent only to part of the population. We find that average long-run inflation decreases in the proportion of agents with naive expectations and, because of tradeoffs between speed of adjustment and long-run inflation, central banks prefer a higher proportion of agents who form informed expectations in high inflation periods but not so in lower inflation periods. We use survey data on expectations of inflation from Bulgaria collected at the time a currency board was introduced in that country to test for influences on the heterogeneity of expectations across agents.
