Stateful Detection In High Throughput Distributed Systems, Gunjan Khanna, Ignacio Laguna, Fahad Arshad, Saurabh Bagchi
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
With the increasing speed of computers, complexity of applications and large scale of applications, many of today’s distributed systems exchange data at a high rate. It is important to provide error detection capabilities to such applications that provide critical functionality. Significant prior work has been done in software implemented error detection achieved through a fault tolerance system separate from the application system. However, the high rate of data coupled with complex detection can cause the capacity of the fault tolerance system to be exhausted resulting in low detection accuracy. This is particularly the case when the detection is done against …

Field Emission From Gan And (Al,Ga)N/Gan Nanorod Heterostructures, P Deb, Tyler Westover, Ho Young Kim, Timothy Fisher, Timothy D. Sands
Birck and NCN Publications
Vacuum field emission from GaN and (Al,Ga)N/GaN nanorods with pyramidal tips has been measured. The turn-on fields, defined at a current density of 0.1 mu A/cm(2), were found to be 38.7 and 19.3 V/mu m, for unintentionally doped GaN and (Al,Ga)N/GaN nanorods, respectively. The 5 nm (Al,Ga)N layer reduced the electron affinity at the surface, thereby lowering the turn-on field and increasing the current density. The nanostructures exhibit a field enhancement factor of approximately 65 and the work function of the (Al,Ga)N/GaN nanorod heterostructure was estimated to be 2.1 eV. The stability of the emission characteristics and the simple fabrication …

Nanorod field-effect transistors (FETs) that use multiple Mg-doped ZnO nanorods and a SiO2 gate insulator were fabricated and characterized. The use of multiple nanorods provides higher on-currents without significant degradation in threshold voltage shift and subthreshold slopes. It has been observed that the on-currents of the multiple ZnO nanorod FETs increase approximately linearly with the number of nanorods, with on-currents of similar to 1 mu A per nanorod and little change in off-current (similar to 4 x 10(-12)). The subthreshold slopes and on-off ratios typically improve as the number of nanorods within the device channel is increased, reflecting good uniformity …

Thermal and electrical transport in a new class of nanocomposites composed of random isotropic two-dimensional ensembles of nanotubes or nanowires in a substrate (host matrix) is considered for use in the channel region of thin-film transistors (TFTs). The random ensemble of nanotubes is generated numerically and each nanotube is discretized using a finite volume scheme. To simulate transport in composites, the network is embedded in a background substrate mesh, which is also discretized using a finite volume scheme. Energy and charge exchange between nanotubes at the points of contact and between the network and the substrate are accounted for. A …
The Testing Culture And The Persistence Of High Stakes Testing Reforms, Michele S. Moses, Michael J. Nanna
The Testing Culture And The Persistence Of High Stakes Testing Reforms, Michele S. Moses, Michael J. Nanna
Education and Culture
The purposes of this critical analysis are to clarify why high stakes testing reforms have become so prevalent in the United States and to explain the connection between current federal and state emphases on standardized testing reforms and educational opportunities. The article outlines the policy context for high stakes examinations, as well as the ideas of testing and accountability as major tenets of current education reform and policy. In partial explanation of the widespread acceptance and use of standardized tests in the United States, we argue that there is a pervasive testing culture, in addition to other contributing factors such …
Interactive Constructivism In Education, Kersten Reich
Interactive Constructivism In Education, Kersten Reich
Education and Culture
Interactive constructivism and its implications for education will be introduced in four steps. (1)The context of the approach and its relation to other constructivist developments will be discussed. (2)I will examine essential pragmatic criteria in the tradition of John Dewey that are relevant for interactive constructivism. (3)More decisively than Dewey interactive constructivism launches a meta-theoretical distinction between observers, participants, and agents. (4)Communication as a chief dimension of education can be analyzed out of three perspectives: the symbolic, the imaginative, and the real. Educators must recognize that their interaction with learners includes great demands not only in practical application/implementation but also …

Other Nanotechnology Publications
High performance ZnO nanowire field effect transistors (NW-FETs) were fabricated using a nanoscopic self-assembled organic gate insulator and characterized in terms of conventional device performance metrics. To optimize device performance and understand the effects of interface properties, devices were fabricated with both Al and Au/Ti source/drain contacts, and device electrical properties were characterized following annealing and ozone treatment. Ozone-treated single ZnO NW-FETs with Al contacts exhibited an on-current (I-on) of similar to 4 mu A at 0.9 V-gs and 1.0 V-ds, a threshold voltage (V-th) of 0.2 V, a subthreshold slope (S) of similar to 130 mV/ decade, an on …

Airline Quality Rating 2007, Brent D. Bowen, Dean E. Headley
Airline Quality Rating Report
The Airline Quality Rating (AQR) was developed and first announced in early 1991 as an objective method for assessing airline quality on combined multiple performance criteria. This current report, the Airline Quality Rating 2007, reflects monthly Airline Quality Rating scores for calendar year 2006. AQR scores for 2006 are based on 15 elements in four major areas that focus on airline performance aspects important to air travel consumers.
The Airline Quality Rating 2007 is a summary of month-by-month quality ratings for U.S. airlines that have at least 1% of domestic scheduled-service passenger revenue during 2006. Using the Airline Quality Rating …

Minimum Length Requirement Of The Flexible N-Terminal Translocation Subdomain Of Colicin E3 , Onkar Sharma, William A. Cramer
Minimum Length Requirement Of The Flexible N-Terminal Translocation Subdomain Of Colicin E3 , Onkar Sharma, William A. Cramer
Oncological Sciences Center Publications
The 315-residue N-terminal T domain of colicin E3 functions in translocation of the colicin across the outer membrane through its interaction with outer membrane proteins including the OmpF porin. The first 83 residues of the T domain are known from structure studies to be disordered. This flexible translocation subdomain contains the TolB box (residues 34 to 46) that must cross the outer membrane in an early translocation event, allowing the colicin to bind to the TolB protein in the periplasm. In the present study, it was found that cytotoxicity of the colicin requires a minimum length of 19 to 23 …
Integrating Patient Safety Into The Curriculum, Kathryn Gardner Rapala, Julie Novak
Integrating Patient Safety Into The Curriculum, Kathryn Gardner Rapala, Julie Novak
RCHE Presentations
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) reports Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century (2001) and To Err Is Human(2000) were tipping points in patient safety. The public reaction to these reports was significant. People paid attention. The report energized patient safety research and applications, prompting much needed research and evidence-based practice. It is difficult to find a patient safety article that does not reference at least one of these landmark reports. These early IOM reports were a catalyst for the development of the Doctor of Nurs- ing Practice degree at Purdue University. Subsequent healthcare summits …

Liquid Crystal Clad Near-Infrared Metamaterials With Tunable Negative-Zero-Positive Refractive Indices, D H. Werner, Do-Hoon Kwon, Iam-Choon Khoo, Alexander V. Kildishev, V. M. Shalaev
Birck and NCN Publications
Near-infrared metamaterials that possess a reconfigurable index of refraction from negative through zero to positive values are presented. Reconfigurability is achieved by cladding thin layers of liquid crystal both as a superstrate and a substrate on an established negative-index metamaterial, and adjusting the permittivity of the liquid crystal. Numerical results show that the index of refraction for the proposed structure can be changed over the range from -1 to +1.8 by tuning the liquid crystal permittivity from 2 to 6 at a wavelength of 1.4 mu m.
Implementation Guides For A Homogeneous Architecture For Power Policy Integration In Operating Systems, Nathaniel Pettis, Yung-Hsiang Lu
Implementation Guides For A Homogeneous Architecture For Power Policy Integration In Operating Systems, Nathaniel Pettis, Yung-Hsiang Lu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
A significant volume of research has concentrated on operating-system directed power management (OSPM). The primary focus of previous research has been the development of OSPM policies. Under different conditions, one policy may outperform another and vice versa. Hence, it is difficult, or even impossible, to design the “best” policy for all computers. We present a software framework called the Homogeneous Architecture for Power Policy Integration (HAPPI) that selects the best policy for a given workload at run-time without user or administrator intervention. This framework is portable across different platforms running Linux. HAPPI specifies common requirements for policies and provides an …
