Destigmatizing Working With Dyslexic Learners, Riley N. Dandurand
Destigmatizing Working With Dyslexic Learners, Riley N. Dandurand
The Writing Center Journal
In the field of writing center research there is a paucity of information regarding tutoring students with dyslexia. This comes as no surprise considering it is only in the last 50 years that there has been a conscious effort to include those who have exceptionalities in all areas of education. In addition to a lack of research and training there is another issue that arises with disclosing exceptionalities. Those studying dyslexia have found that students are hesitant to disclose their learning disability because of the stigma and feelings of differentiation from their peers (Brizee et al., 2012). The question then …
Embedded Vs. Drop-In Tutors In Developmental Writing Contexts: Course/Tutoring Perceptions And Impact On Student Writing Efficacy, Kendon Kurzer, Anna Hayden, Jennifer Nguyen
Embedded Vs. Drop-In Tutors In Developmental Writing Contexts: Course/Tutoring Perceptions And Impact On Student Writing Efficacy, Kendon Kurzer, Anna Hayden, Jennifer Nguyen
The Writing Center Journal
Many higher education institutions offer drop-in tutoring programs hosted by writing specialists to support struggling students while others may also/alternatively embed tutors directly into courses. In this quasi-experimental study, we compared survey results from 100 students in basic/developmental courses that featured embedded peer tutors with 78 students who experienced tutoring via a walk-in writing center. Variables explored included writing efficacy and course/tutor perception survey items. While students generally found both embedded and walk-in tutoring to be helpful, the ratings for embedding tutoring tended to be statistically stronger for most variables we investigated, suggesting that students responded more positively to embedded …
Keynote: Butting Heads And The Agency To Yield: Maverick Considerations In The Writing Center, Rebecca Hallman Martini
Keynote: Butting Heads And The Agency To Yield: Maverick Considerations In The Writing Center, Rebecca Hallman Martini
The Writing Center Journal
Despite their history of marginalization, writing centers need to be spaces where consultants, writers, and administrators act with agency. This requires both knowing when and how to act, as well as deciding when to yield. In challenging policies of seeming neutrality, I argue in this manuscript that writing center practitioners can center the needs and knowledge of consultants and writers alike. Finally, I call for more research about writer experiences with writing centers, which can (and should) meaningfully shape our administrative practices.
Keynote: Looking At Writing Centers Through Scientific Spectacles: The Expertise And Commitments That Characterize Contemporary Writing Centers, Bradley Hughes
Keynote: Looking At Writing Centers Through Scientific Spectacles: The Expertise And Commitments That Characterize Contemporary Writing Centers, Bradley Hughes
The Writing Center Journal
This article is adapted from a keynote address at the July 2022 European Writing Centers Association (EWCA) conference, sponsored by the University of Graz in Austria, whose theme focused on writing centers as spaces of empowerment. Designed for peer tutors as well as writing center faculty, this talk first celebrates some examples of writing centers empowering student writers and tutors. It then attempts to articulate what scientific spectacles allow us to see when we look deeper into these examples of empowerment: some of the big ideas, the abstract principles, the constellation of expertise and commitments that underlie our contemporary writing …

Fábula Del Poder: Corporalidad, Biopolítica Y Violencia En La Narrativa De Sergio Ramírez, Daniel Chávez Landeros
Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures
A noncommissioned officer of the Nicaraguan National Guard travels to New York to meet the famous bodybuilder, Charles Atlas. When he approaches his hero, he finds a body pierced with syringes and tubes, a cyborg of fragile artificial life. In the garden of a Central American dictator’s mansion, a prisoner is locked in a cage next to a lion’s. Nature and animal instinct will take their course. In post-Sandinista Nicaragua, an amputee policeman must face—alone and wounded—a drug gang commanded by his former guerrilla leader. Despite the gravity and violence present in many of Sergio Ramírez Mercado’s short stories and …
It’S Not Paradise For The Dogs And Shelter Workers: Dog Welfare And Occupational Stress In Animal Shelters In Hawaii, Lynn Morrison
It’S Not Paradise For The Dogs And Shelter Workers: Dog Welfare And Occupational Stress In Animal Shelters In Hawaii, Lynn Morrison
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
Dog welfare and occupational stress of animal shelter workers at two sites on Hawaii Island were examined. The east side had higher euthanasia rates than the west side. The two sites are in locales that differ culturally and economically. The goal of this study is to (1) elucidate how dog culture differs at the two sites and how those differences affect the health of dogs, and (2) assess the stress levels of shelter workers who must simultaneously care for the dogs while often having to euthanize them. Interviews and cortisol were obtained from the shelter workers and cortisol was obtained …

Mixed Reality: A Tool For Investigating The Complex Design And Mechanisms Of A Mechanically Actuated Digital Pump, Israa Azzam, Keith Pate, Farid Breidi, Minsoo Choi, Yeling Jiang, Christos Mousas
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
Digital hydraulics is a discrete technology that integrates advanced dynamic system controls, digital electronics, and machine learning to enhance fluid power systems’ performance, overall efficiency, and controllability. A mechanically actuated inline three-piston variable displacement digital pump was previously proposed and designed. The inline three-piston pump incorporates complex mechanical and hydraulic subsystems and highly coupled mechanisms. The complexity of the utilized subsystems poses challenges when assessing the viability of the conceptual design. Therefore, this work focuses on designing, developing, and implementing a collaborative virtual platform involving a digitized module showcasing the internal mechanical structure of the digital pump utilizing mixed reality …
Acoustical Properties Of Anisotropic Spinodoid Structures, Yutong Xue, Brittany Wojciechowski, Bhisham Sharma, J Stuart Bolton
Acoustical Properties Of Anisotropic Spinodoid Structures, Yutong Xue, Brittany Wojciechowski, Bhisham Sharma, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
Spinodoid structures, also called spinodoid metamaterials, are non-periodic cellular structures that mimic the spinodal topologies that are observed during diffusion-driven phase separation processes. Spinodoid structures are computationally efficient to model and they can be fabricated using additive techniques; as a result, they offer an attractive way to design multifunctional structures that can simultaneously provide mechanical stiffness and noise reduction performance. In recent work, the normal incidence sound absorption behavior of four distinct spinodoid topologies was studied: isotropic, cubic, columnar, and lamellar. The isotropic and cubic topologies are essentially isotropic in terms of acoustical behavior, and they can be successfully modeled …
Geopolitics In Recent U.S. Professional Military Reading Lists, Bert Chapman
Geopolitics In Recent U.S. Professional Military Reading Lists, Bert Chapman
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Professional military reading lists have existed for a long time in the U.S. military and in other national militaries. They are frequently updated and intended to enhance the professional knowledge of military professionals in areas ranging from cultural awareness, ethics, leadership, international relations, military history and military operations, and areas of expertise considered essential to successfully executing the operations of their military service branch. These lists are prepared by the leadership organizations of these armed services such as the Air Force Chief of Staff, U.S. Army’s Chief of Staff, Chief of Naval Operations, and Marine Corps Commandant. Such readings are …
Acoustic Modeling Of Granular Material And Its Combination With A Flexible Perforated Membrane, Zhuang Mo, Guochenhao Song, Tongyang Shi, J. Stuart Bolton
Acoustic Modeling Of Granular Material And Its Combination With A Flexible Perforated Membrane, Zhuang Mo, Guochenhao Song, Tongyang Shi, J. Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
Porous granular materials such as activated carbon have been found helpful in sound absorption at low frequencies, and enlarging the apparent volume of loudspeaker cabinet. Such findings have encouraged studies of modeling technique to predict their response to an acoustic input. When tested in an impedance tube, the finite space of the sample holder and the elasticity of the granule stack can lead to features that are not predicted by rigid acoustic models, like sound absorption peaks caused by radial modes, for example. In the presented work, a finite difference (FD) scheme is built based on Biot theory to account …
Spiritual Healing On The Border: Lessons In Art, Culture, And Education, Christopher D. Tirres
Spiritual Healing On The Border: Lessons In Art, Culture, And Education, Christopher D. Tirres
Education and Culture
Ninety years ago, John Dewey’s discussion of “the religious”—as distinct from traditional “religion”—opened new ways of thinking about the connection between spirituality and everyday forms of human action. But in what ways does our contemporary religious landscape invite us to reimagine and reconstruct Deweyan approaches to religion? This essay addresses this question by focusing on how the community of El Paso, Texas came together to respond to one of the worst racially motivated mass shootings in recent history. This community’s use of spirituality, art, and institutional religion all corroborate key Deweyan insights and invite us to stretch them further.
How To Cultivate A Good Character—Pragmatically: Dewey And Franklin On The Virtues, Shane J. Ralston
How To Cultivate A Good Character—Pragmatically: Dewey And Franklin On The Virtues, Shane J. Ralston
Education and Culture
Philosophical pragmatists rarely receive credit for their contribution to virtue ethics. But perhaps they should. How did America’s philosopher of democracy, John Dewey, and one of its most famous elder statesmen, Benjamin Franklin, advise troubled souls in search of moral improvement? According to James Campbell, Dewey and Franklin recommended the cultivation of inquiry-specific virtues, specifically imagination and fallibilism, thereby transforming the moral agent into a more effective ethical problem solver. For Gregory Pappas, open-mindedness and courage resemble Deweyan virtues, since both are integral to the pragmatist’s ideal of a balanced character. However, Pappas contends that Dewey would reject any procedure …
Canceling, Liberty, And The Dangers To Education, Mordechai Gordon
Canceling, Liberty, And The Dangers To Education, Mordechai Gordon
Education and Culture
This essay explores with the help of the discipline of philosophy of education the educational implications of the practice of canceling individuals or ideas. In particular, it investigates what gets lost or undermined when we cancel various opinions, words, and practices. To advance my argument, I first introduce some basic definitions while analyzing the problem with the notion of cancel culture. Then, I briefly review various historical examples of canceling going back to Socrates. The next part of this paper presents some of the philosophical arguments against canceling and restricting speech made by John Stuart Mill. After presenting Mill’s contentions …

On Gary Snyder’S Tradaptation Of Cold Mountain Poems And Its Spiritual Salvation And Literary Enlightenment In Postwar America, Hu Anjiang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Cold Mountain Poems (CMPs), which have been neglected in the history of Chinese literature for ages, captured the attention of most Americans immediately after its being translated into America by the American poet Gary Snyder in 1950s, however. It is Snyder that reconfigured and recreated a sagacious Chinese Chan Buddhist poet Han-shan (literally, Cold Mountain), the acknowledged author of Cold Mountain Poems, in his translation for the postwar Americans in the midst of varied social problems and cultural identity crisis after World War II. Snyder eventually found in his translation of Cold Mountain Poems a back-to-nature remedy of …

Topological Tropology Of V.S. Naipaul’S Islamic Travelogues And Daniel Pipes’ Islamic History: Ahistorical Historicism, Md. Habibullah
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Nobel laureate V. S. Naipaul’s (1932-2018) first Islamic travelogue Among the Believers: An Islamic Journey (1981) contains his experience of a visit from August 1979 to February 1980 to the four non-Arab Muslim-majority countries – Iran, Pakistan, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Similarly, his last Islamic travelogue Beyond Belief: Islamic Excursions among the Converted Peoples (1998) has a description of another visit to the same countries for five-month in 1995. Concurrently, Daniel Pipes (1949-), an American historian, published his doctoral dissertation, Slave Soldiers and Islam: The Genesis of a Military System (1981), which represents Islamic culture as the first instigator of …
Children’S Gothic In The Chinese Context: The Untranslatability And Cross-Cultural Readability Of A Literary Genre, Chengcheng You
Children’S Gothic In The Chinese Context: The Untranslatability And Cross-Cultural Readability Of A Literary Genre, Chengcheng You
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
As an emerging literary subgenre in the twenty-first century, Children’s Gothic challenges and blends the norms of both children’s literature and Gothic literature, featuring child characters’ self-empowerment in the face of fears and dark impulses. The foreignness and strangeness that pertain to the genre haunt the border of its translatability. Daniel Handler’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (1999–2006), written under the pseudonym Lemony Snicket, poses a chain of translational challenges due to its linguistic creativity, paratextual art, and mixed style of horror and dark humor intended for a child readership. To investigate the interplay between Children’s Gothic and its (un)translatability …
The Animal In The Wild In Hwang Sun-Mi’S The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly, Sarah Yoon
The Animal In The Wild In Hwang Sun-Mi’S The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly, Sarah Yoon
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Hwang Sun-mi’s The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly has become a contemporary classic children’s story in Korea since its original publication in 2000. Since then, the story has been translated and redesigned with new illustrations in almost thirty different countries (Y. Kim). The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly centers on a hen that raises a duckling as her “baby,” with the story drawing upon a rich reservoir of cultural associations between humans and nature in East Asian traditions. In this story, the hen leaves the human-dominated barnyard, based on profit, exploitation, and competition, for a reconnection with moral …

A Positioning Theory Analysis Of Interaction Surrounding Design Failures In An Elementary Engineering Club, Katarina N. Silvestri, Mary B. Mcvee, Lynn E. Shanahan, Kenneth English
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
This qualitative study applies Positioning Theory to identify positions that mediate the experiences of design failure within the context of an afterschool engineering club (EC) with elementary students diverse in language, race, ethnicity, gender, and academic abilities. We ask: (1) What kinds of structural design failure and failure responses did participants in EC experience? and (2) What are students’ and teachers’ positions in relation to responses to design failure? Types of positions (e.g., builder, tinkerer, idea-elicitor, director, observer) were identified in relation to children’s and teachers’ actions and speech in response to structural design failure during EC. Participants included 12 …
Can Social Media Help Us Understand The Impact Of Climate Change On Forests In The Us?, Derek Van Berkel, Nathan Fox, Stella Cousins, Kai Zhu
Can Social Media Help Us Understand The Impact Of Climate Change On Forests In The Us?, Derek Van Berkel, Nathan Fox, Stella Cousins, Kai Zhu
I-GUIDE Forum
While social media data are increasingly being used in the study of pressing environmental problems, their ability to monitor environmental changes has scarcely been assessed. Understanding this viability is highly important as climate change increasingly impacts public health, and behavior. We examine social media photographs associated with wildfires in Yellowstone National Park to assess if images and content can adequately capture environmental change associated with large-scale landscape impacts - wildfires - using computer vision, natural language processing and spatiotemporal analysis. We find that social media posts associated with wildfire events rarely capture the fires themselves, while landscape impacts including burnt …
How To Treat Alzheimer’S Disease By Boosting Glymphatic Flow: Simulations In A New Computational Model, Charles F. Babbs
How To Treat Alzheimer’S Disease By Boosting Glymphatic Flow: Simulations In A New Computational Model, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers
This study exercises a new mathematical model to search for unappreciated therapeutic targets in Alzheimer’s disease. The model describes detailed mechanisms underlying the glymphatic pump mechanism, which removes toxic proteins of Alzheimer’s disease from the interstitial fluid of the brain. It shows that the glymphatic pump is driven by the amplitude of intracranial pressure pulsations in the subarachnoid space, which are correlated with the arterial pulse and modulated by many other factors. Implementing ways to increase intracranial pressure pulses quickly comes to mind as a potential treatment strategy. Specific interventions include drugs that increase arterial pulse volume and small devices …
Student Preferences For Reference Services At A Remote Biological Station Library, Thom Gerrish, Scott Martin
Student Preferences For Reference Services At A Remote Biological Station Library, Thom Gerrish, Scott Martin
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
During the 2020 and 2021 summer semesters, the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS) transitioned to hybrid classes that were primarily distance learning with two-week inperson sections. The library offered both synchronous and asynchronous reference assistance over the summer term. An analysis showed that students favored using the UMBS LibGuide over synchronous virtual reference help via Zoom. Students further preferred face-to-face interactions over virtual formats, and their preference for LibGuide assistance may carry into the post- COVID-19 classroom. This finding suggests that students prioritize convenience and immediacy over personalized assistance in the Zoom platform. Thus, in providing reference assistance to …

Cabozantinib And Il-27 Combinatorial Therapy For Bone-Metastatic Prostate Cancer, Shreya Kumar, Grace E. Mulia, Marxa L. Figueiredo
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
Introduction: Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death among American men. Prostate tumor cells exhibit significant tropism for the bone and once metastasis occurs, survival rates fall significantly. Current treatment options are not curative and focus on symptom management. Immunotherapies are rapidly emerging as a possible therapeutic option for a variety of cancers including prostate cancer, however, variable patient response remains a concern. Chemotherapies, like cabozantinib, can have immune-priming effects which sensitize tumors to immunotherapies. Additionally, lower doses of chemotherapy can be used in this context which can reduce patient side effects. We hypothesized that a combination …
Sib Hlub Sib Pab As Cultural Capital: Community Cultural Wealth, Radical Love, And A Hmoob Language Teacher’S Determination, Ariana Yang
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
This theoretical article examines a form of cultural capital, sib hlub sib pab as capital, that emerged out of my dissertation research with HMoob American teachers. Drawing on the structure of Yosso’s (2005) theory of community cultural wealth (CCW) and literature on radical love (Freire, 1970; hooks, 2003, 2006), this article outlines an alternative form of cultural capital: sib hlub sib pab as capital, which encompasses an obligation to community and relationality rooted in radical love. Although this is a primarily theoretical article, I provide an excerpt from an interview with a HMoob language teacher and her struggles with building …
Hmong Narratives As Testimony, Pa N. Vue
Hmong Narratives As Testimony, Pa N. Vue
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
Refugees are often depicted in studies and popular media as helpless and in need of rescuing. In the song “Hmoob Zaj,” which was released on YouTube in 2019, Hmong rapper Shong Lee humanizes Hmong refugee experiences by sharing a story that has been “secreted” (M. Vang, 2021, p. 10) by the U.S. government. Through the public archiving of this story on YouTube, Lee presents what Espiritu (2014) calls an “oppositional narrative” (p. 163) that speaks back to the empire. He asserts a critical stance to challenge the dominant narrative, validate the experiential knowledge of Hmong people, contribute to Hmong collective …
