Politics Of Indigeneity In Fogarty's Poetry, Sean Gorman
Politics Of Indigeneity In Fogarty's Poetry, Sean Gorman
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Politics of Indigeneity in Fogarty's Poetry" Sean Gorman discusses Indigenous themes and issues with regards to the poetry of Murri writer Lionel Fogarty. As Fogarty is seen as a poet who writes complex prose, his material challenges non-Indigenous readerships by subverting Standard English and conventional reading practices. Gorman suggests strategies by which to engage with Fogarty's material and, employing the theories of Mikhail Bakhtin, namely heteroglossia and dialogism, to arrive at a better understanding of the rich and complex nature of Fogarty's work. Gorman executes his analysis in relation to the political debates that have arisen since …

Formation Of Silicon Nanodots Via Ion Beam Sputtering Of Ultrathin Gold Thin Film Coatings On Si, Osman El-Atwani, Sami Ortoleva, Alex Cimaroli, Jean Paul Allain
Birck and NCN Publications
Ion beam sputtering of ultrathin film Au coatings used as a physical catalyst for self-organization of Si nanostructures has been achieved by tuning the incident particle energy. This approach holds promise as a scalable nanomanufacturing parallel processing alternative to candidate nanolithography techniques. Structures of 11- to 14-nm Si nanodots are formed with normal incidence low-energy Ar ions of 200 eV and fluences above 2 x 10(17) cm(-2). In situ surface characterization during ion irradiation elucidates early stage ion mixing migration mechanism for nanodot self-organization. In particular, the evolution from gold film islands to the formation of ion-induced metastable gold silicide …

Improving Near-Field Confinement Of A Bowtie Aperture Using Surface Plasmon Polaritons, Pornsak Srisungsitthisunti, Okan Ersoy, Xianfan Xu
Birck and NCN Publications
Bowtie aperture is known to produce subdiffraction-limited optical spot with high intensity. In this work, we investigate integrating a bowtie aperture with circular grooves to reduce the divergence of the near-field produced by the bowtie aperture. Numerical results indicate that surface waves reflected from circular grooves improve the field confinement of a bowtie aperture along the polarization axis. These circular grooves with period near half the wavelength of surface plasmon polaritons reduce the spot size by as much as 40% at distances between 20 and 100 nm from the surface and create a more symmetrical optical spot. Mosfl1 Is Important For Virulence And Heat Tolerance In Magnaporthe Oryzae., Guotian Li, Xiaoying Zhou, Lingan Kong, Yuling Wang, Haifeng Zhang, Heng Zhu, Thomas K. Mitchell, Ralph A. Dean, Jin-Rong Xu
Department of Botany and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications
The formation of appressoria, specialized plant penetration structures of Magnaporthe oryzae, is regulated by the MST11-MST7-PMK1 MAP kinase cascade. One of its downstream transcription factor, MST12, is important for penetration and invasive growth but dispensable for appressorium formation. To identify additional downstream targets that are regulated by Pmk1, in this study we performed phosphorylation assays with a protein microarray composed of 573M. oryzae transcription factor (TF) genes. Three of the TF genes phosphorylated by Pmk1 in vitro were further analyzed by coimmunoprecipitation assays. One of them, MoSFL1, was found to interact with …
Review Of Democracy And The Political Unconscious, Gregory M. Fahy
Review Of Democracy And The Political Unconscious, Gregory M. Fahy
Education and Culture
Noëlle McAfee analyzes social pathologies that have arisen in the United States. She argues that we have been suffering society-wide repetition compulsions and time collapses, and acting out in ways that continue the cycle of suffering. She presents a detailed prescription of how we might work through these issues more democratically and fruitfully using deliberative talking cures. McAfee’s application of the psychoanalytic model to society is fascinating and she offers very concrete and practical suggestions for how to better resolve social trauma.
Social Capital And Education: Implications For Student And School Performance, Gregory K. Plagens
Social Capital And Education: Implications For Student And School Performance, Gregory K. Plagens
Education and Culture
Scholarly work on student and school performance poses a variety of explanations for observed variations. One explanation receiving too little attention is social capital, an intangible resource argued to grow out of social relations and social structure. The seedbed of social capital is argued to reside with John Dewey, who in 1900 used the term when explaining the importance of reading, writing and arithmetic to the future of individuals and communities. This paper examines social capital as a concept and discusses indicators and linkages that may be valuable to educators seeking ways to raise student and school performance.
An Overburdened Term: Dewey’S Concept Of “Experience” As Curriculum Theory, Jayson Seaman, Peter J. Nelsen
An Overburdened Term: Dewey’S Concept Of “Experience” As Curriculum Theory, Jayson Seaman, Peter J. Nelsen
Education and Culture
This article examines Dewey’s concept of ‘experience’ in light of his analysis of industrial capitalism, his anthropological thinking, and his critique of early 20th century educational ideologies, giving the concept a more expansive meaning than what is typically represented in the educational literature. We also outline the specific curricular logic Dewey established in the early 20th century, which was intended to realize his overriding aim of establishing controls over an increasingly corrosive social, economic and technological order brought about by industrial capitalism, while still promoting individual development. Preliminary links between ‘experience’ and contemporary curriculum models are also examined.

Mycoplasma suis, the causative agent of porcine infectious anemia, has never been cultured in vitro and mechanisms by which it causes disease are poorly understood. Thus, the objective herein was to use whole genome sequencing and analysis of M. suis to define pathogenicity mechanisms and biochemical pathways. M. suis was harvested from the blood of an experimentally infected pig. Following DNA extraction and construction of a paired end library, whole-genome sequencing was performed using GS-FLX (454) and Titanium chemistry. Reads on paired-end constructs were assembled using GS De Novo Assembler and gaps closed by primer walking; assembly was validated by …

Can Video Games Be Valid Predictors Of Success For The Private Pilot Phase Check?, Laura E. Bourguignon
Aviation Technology Graduate Student Publications
A study was conducted at a Midwestern university to determine whether or not video game performance can be an accurate predictor of success on the private pilot phase check. In this study, there were thirty-three potential participants enrolled in AT 145, the private pilot flight training course. Twenty-three (70%) students agreed to participate. These volunteer participants were asked to complete a video game (Super Mario Galaxy). The items collected and time to finish a pre-selected level were recorded. These scores were correlated with the aggregated scores that the participants earned during their private pilot phase checks. Although a survey of …

Middle-And High-School Students’ Interest In Nanoscale Science And Engineering Topics And Phenomena, Kelly Hutchinson, George M. Bodner, Lynn Bryan
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Research has shown that an increase in students’ interest in science and engineering can have a positive effect on their achievement (Baird, 1986; Eccles & Wigfield, 2002; French, Immekus & Oakes, 2005; Schiefele, Krapp, & Winteler, 1992; Schwartz Bloom & Haplin, 2003; Weinburgh, 1995). Whereas many NSF-funded programs in materials science and nanotechnology have included efforts to develop curriculum materials for use in secondary or tertiary classrooms, relatively little work has been done to determine the topics that increase students’ interest in science, engineering, and technology. As part of the work done by the National Center for Learning and Teaching …
