Effects Of Music Tempos On Flight Performance, Alexandra R. Kieta, John P. Young, Derek Stewart Apr 2013

Effects Of Music Tempos On Flight Performance, Alexandra R. Kieta, John P. Young, Derek Stewart

Aviation Technology Graduate Student Publications

To date, research on how listening to music affects performance in high-cognitive demand environments has ranged from those working in information technology to everyday drivers. Some research asserts listening to music does have an effect on human task performance (whether positive or negative) and other research asserts there are no statistically significant effects. This research study focused on how varying music tempos affect pilot performance during certain flight maneuvers. With significant findings, measures could be taken to improve pilot, crew and passenger safety; however, no statistically significant results were found that listening to different music tempos had any effect on …

Sipb-Sipc Complex Is Essential For Translocon Formation., Sebenzile K. Myeni, Lu Wang, Daoguo Zhou

Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The delivery of effector proteins by Salmonella across the host cell membrane requires a subset of effectors secreted by the type III secretion system (TTSS) known as translocators. SipC and SipB are translocator proteins that are inserted into host membranes and presumably form a channel that translocates type III effectors into the host cell. The molecular events of how these translocators insert into the host cell membrane remain unknown. We have previously shown that the SipC C-terminal amino acid region (321–409) is required for the translocation of effectors into host cells. In this study, we demonstrate that the ability to …

Batf Regulates The Development And Function Of Il-17 Producing Inkt Cells., Kimberly L. Jordan-Williams, Stacie Poston, Elizabeth J. Taparowsky

Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Background

BATF plays important roles in the function of the immune system. Batf null mice are deficient in both CD4+ Th17 cells and T follicular helper cells and possess an intrinsic B cell defect that leads to the complete absence of class switched Ig. In this study, Tg mice overexpressing BATF in T cells were used together with Batf null mice to investigate how altering levels of BATF expression in T cells impacts the development and function of a recently characterized population of iNKT cells expressing IL-17 (iNKT-17).

Results

BATF has a direct impact on IL-17 expression by iNKT …

The Arab Spring And Western Societies: Fraternity And Collective Leadership, Paolo Giusta Mar 2013

The Arab Spring And Western Societies: Fraternity And Collective Leadership, Paolo Giusta

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

This article uses the principle of fraternity to read some recent evolutions of the concept of leadership both in research and in practice (for instance, the Arab revolutions) from individual, to shared, to collective leadership. In particular, it explores how some fraternal characteristics of collective leadership can provide an effective practice, underpinning both successful participation and transformation. The fraternity principle, indeed, can help collective leadership evolve from a “neighborly choice” to a full-fledged “civic duty”: a duty, however, which like leadership itself cannot be enforced or imposed from outside, but must result from an inside-out movement.

Trinity As Trope: The Relational Turn In Communication Studies, Dennis Cali Mar 2013

Trinity As Trope: The Relational Turn In Communication Studies, Dennis Cali

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

Previous “systems” of rhetoric, which have arisen as responses to felt needs, emphasize an individualist paradigm whereas the contemporary system, responding to current impulses, tends toward a relational paradigm. The “Trinity” is proposed here as a trope that both prefigures this relational and dialogical turn in communication studies and suggests the ethical ends toward which communication praxis should aim. In particular, the Trinitarian thought of Chiara Lubich offers a unique perspective on the relational current in communication studies, especially its links of ontology with praxis, relational being with communication, and kenosis with perichoresis.

Smaller Flight Data Recorders, Yair Wiseman, Alon Barkai Mar 2013

Smaller Flight Data Recorders, Yair Wiseman, Alon Barkai

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Data captured by flight data recorders are generally stored on the system’s embedded hard disk. A common problem is the lack of storage space on the disk. This lack of space for data storage leads to either a constant effort to reduce the space used by data, or to increased costs due to acquisition of additional space, which is not always possible. File compression can solve the problem, but carries with it the potential drawback of the increased overhead required when writing the data to the disk, putting an excessive load on the system and degrading system performance. The author …

Effects Of A Carbon Emissions Trading System On Aviation Financial Decisions, Mary E. Johnson, Alan Gonzalez Mar 2013

Effects Of A Carbon Emissions Trading System On Aviation Financial Decisions, Mary E. Johnson, Alan Gonzalez

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

The cost of providing air transportation for passengers and cargo to, from, and within the European Union was scheduled to increase in 2012 due to the EU Emission Trading Scheme. The European Union (EU) has legislated that aircraft landing or taking off from EU airports are subjected to the Emission Trading System (ETS) and are levied a charge for the estimated amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) generated during the entire flight. Since direct measurement of CO2 emitted during flight is not practical, the EU carbon emissions are estimated using the amount of fuel consumed. CO2 is …

Cryo-Em Structure Of A Novel Calicivirus, Tulane Virus., Guimei Yu, Dongsheng Zhang, Fei Guo, Ming Tan, Xi Jiang, Wen Jiang

Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Tulane virus (TV) is a newly isolated cultivatable calicivirus that infects juvenile rhesus macaques. Here we report a 6.3 Å resolution cryo-electron microscopy structure of the TV virion. The TV virion is about 400 Å in diameter and consists of a T = 3 icosahedral protein capsid enclosing the RNA genome. 180 copies of the major capsid protein VP1 (~57 KDa) are organized into two types of dimers A/B and C/C and form a thin, smooth shell studded with 90 dimeric protrusions. The overall capsid organization and the capsid protein fold of TV closely resemble that of other caliciviruses, especially …

Background

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that play critical roles in regulating post transcriptional gene expression. Gall midges encompass a large group of insects that are of economic importance and also possess fascinating biological traits. The gall midge Mayetiola destructor, commonly known as the Hessian fly, is a destructive pest of wheat and model organism for studying gall midge biology and insect – host plant interactions.

Results

In this study, we systematically analyzed miRNAs from the Hessian fly. Deep-sequencing a Hessian fly larval transcriptome led to the identification of 89 miRNA species that are either identical or very …

Drugs, Devices, And Desires: A Problem-Based Learning Course In The History Of Medicine, Sarah Levitt, Anne Mckeage, P. K. Rangachari

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Problem-based learning (PBL) is well suited for courses in the history of medicine, where multiple perspectives exist and information has to be gleaned from different sources. A student, an archivist, and a teacher offer three perspectives about a senior level course where students explored the antecedents and consequences of medical technology. Two active learning strategies were used: (a) PBL to explore the historical basis of procedures used to diagnose, prevent and treat a single disease, tuberculosis, and (b) a concurrent inquiry-based component that permitted individual exploration of other medical technologies and demonstration of learning through diverse options (book reviews, conversations, …
