Mapping Religion And Chinese Society, Jonathan E.E. Pettit Nov 2016

Mapping Religion And Chinese Society, Jonathan E.E. Pettit

Purdue GIS Day

Over the past two decades, the Chinese government has enacted a series of regulations that have made the collection of geospatial data illegal, and have tried to use existing technologies (e.g., cell phone towers, online mapping programs) to avert attempts to map sensitive areas in China. This talks examines the recent work of Purdue graduate students at the Center on Religion and Chinese Society, who have developed a web-based GIS program that provides researchers worldwide a way to make and use accurate data on religious and demographic data in China.

Cooking, Language, And Memory In Farhoud's Le Bonheur À La Queue Glissante And Thúy's Mãn, Simona Emilia Pruteanu Nov 2016

Cooking, Language, And Memory In Farhoud's Le Bonheur À La Queue Glissante And Thúy's Mãn, Simona Emilia Pruteanu

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Cooking, Language, and Memory in Farhoud's Le Bonheur à la queue glissante and Thúy's Mãn" Simona Emilia Pruteanu discusses two moments in the evolution of (im)migrant writing in Québec. Abla Farhoud's 1998 novel shows the struggle of Dounia, a Lebanese immigrant living in Montréal, who in her seventies finds a voice with the help of her daughter's writing and starts to reflect on her identity. Themes of language and cooking overlap and reinforce one another and offer a new perspective on memory and the act of remembering. Language, cooking, and memory also intertwine in Thúy's 2013 …

Two Decades Of Progress For Minorities In Aviation, David C. Ison, Rene Herron, Linda Weiland Oct 2016

Two Decades Of Progress For Minorities In Aviation, David C. Ison, Rene Herron, Linda Weiland

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Diversity within the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields has historically lagged behind that which is found in other vocational paths. Aviation has also suffered poor diversity with virtually no participation among professional pilots. With both the literature specifying the benefits of diversity in the aviation workplace and potential shortages of pilots looming, it is in the interest of aerospace stakeholders to have access to the most comprehensively diverse employee pool possible. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the trends in participation by minorities who completed professional pilot education programs in the United States. Data concerning the …

Supporting Sensemaking Of Complex Objects With Visualizations: Visibility And Complementarity Of Interactions, Kamran Sedig, Paul Parsons, Hai-Ning Liang, Jim Morey Oct 2016

Supporting Sensemaking Of Complex Objects With Visualizations: Visibility And Complementarity Of Interactions, Kamran Sedig, Paul Parsons, Hai-Ning Liang, Jim Morey

Computer Graphics Technology Faculty Publications

Making sense of complex objects is difficult, and typically requires the use of external representations to support cognitive demands while reasoning about the objects. Visualizations are one type of external representation that can be used to support sensemaking activities. In this paper, we investigate the role of two design strategies in making the interactive features of visualizations more supportive of users’ exploratory needs when trying to make sense of complex objects. These two strategies are visibility and complementarityof interactions. We employ a theoretical framework concerned with human–information interaction and complex cognitive activities to inform, contextualize, and interpret the effects …

Don’T Share This Item! Developing Digital Collections And Services In A Consumer‐Licensed World, William M. Cross, Darby Orcutt Oct 2016

Don’T Share This Item! Developing Digital Collections And Services In A Consumer‐Licensed World, William M. Cross, Darby Orcutt

Charleston Library Conference

Libraries have always faced unique challenges in providing non‐academic content for academic use, but the digital age has brought particular problems of “one size fits all” consumer purchase models and vexing methods of digital rights management (DRM), wrapped up with a large bow of legal uncertainty for many institutions. These proceedings describe some practices for sharing consumer‐licensed popular materials and confronting legal and technical barriers, as well as what some libraries are considering and encountering in applying the law, fair use, user expectations, and common sense in developing collections and services around digital content that is geared directly to end …

The Secret Life Of Articles: From Download Metrics To Downstream Impact, Carol Tenopir, Lorraine Estelle, Wouter Haak, Suzie Allard, Lisa Christian, David Nicholas, Anthony Watkinson, Hazel Woodward, Peter Shepherd, Robert Anderson, Suzan Ali Saleh

Charleston Library Conference

Traditional citation and download metrics have long been the standard by which we measure the use and value of scholarly articles. However, these methods neglect the usage and real‐world impact of newer technologies to access, store, and share downloaded scholarly articles. This session’s speakers will share the results of interviews, focus groups, and an international survey with 1,000 scholars to investigate the ways in which they now access, store, share, and use downloaded scholarly articles. By identifying and measuring what traditional metrics fail to examine, the Beyond Downloads project attempts to capture a more complete picture of the use and …

Open Access Funds: Getting A Bigger Bang For Our Bucks, Robert Glushko, Crystal Hampson, Patricia Moore, Elizabeth Yates Oct 2016

Open Access Funds: Getting A Bigger Bang For Our Bucks, Robert Glushko, Crystal Hampson, Patricia Moore, Elizabeth Yates

Charleston Library Conference

Many libraries offer open access publishing funds to support authors in paying article processing charges (APC) levied by some OA journals. However, there are few standard practices for managing or assessing these funds. The Open Access Working Group (OAWG) of the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) was asked to investigate and articulate best practices for successful open access fund management. In spring 2015, the OAWG surveyed Canadian academic libraries with OA funds to review their criteria and collect feedback on current practices. The survey proved timely because many OA funds are under review. Shrinking budgets, ending pilots, and questions …

The Open Movement: What Libraries Can Do, Sheila Corrall Oct 2016

The Open Movement: What Libraries Can Do, Sheila Corrall

Charleston Library Conference

Open approaches have moved beyond open access, open source software, and open courseware to developments with open infrastructure and open processes. Open initiatives are gaining momentum as a result of both bottom‐up grassroots activism and top‐down policy agenda. In a few instances, they have already reached a tipping point; but in many cases they are being pursued separately by specialist groups, suffering from fragmentation, and not always having their expected outcomes or impacts. Our study of open initiatives uses a simple overarching definition of open resources, and introduces a convenient framework enabling shared understanding of three different types of openness—open …

Teaching The Library To Students Of Higher Education, Steven Weiland Oct 2016

Teaching The Library To Students Of Higher Education, Steven Weiland

Charleston Library Conference

The academic library and its digital transformation are ignored in graduate programs of higher education administration, which train a significant number of postsecondary professionals. A course in scholarly communications in the digital age recently introduced at one such program includes an invitation to aspiring administrators to study the contributions of the library to the ways that faculty members are coming to understand and capitalize on new technologies in teaching, research, and career development. The library is represented in the course in its traditional and new roles. It is an essential campus location for attention to what technological change means for …

Publishing Our Own Work: Contributing To The Professional Literature Through Systematizing Sharing Of Library Reports, Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe, Sarah E. Crissinger, Emily A. Hardesty, Aaron S. Mccollough Oct 2016

Publishing Our Own Work: Contributing To The Professional Literature Through Systematizing Sharing Of Library Reports, Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe, Sarah E. Crissinger, Emily A. Hardesty, Aaron S. Mccollough

Charleston Library Conference

Library employees often work on teams, committees, or task forces to do research, and investigation as part of their responsibilities in carrying out the operations of a library; however, much of this work is not published in the professional literature and is only inconsistently recorded in committee documents. As such, this work is hidden both from others in the library who might use it and from the profession at large, meaning that other libraries were not able to benefit from it. To address these challenges, the University of Illinois Library (Urbana‐Champaign) established the Library Occasional Reports Series (LibORS) in 2015. …

On The Premises And Beyond: Managing Copyright Policy Through Institutional And Technological Change, Brandy Karl Oct 2016

On The Premises And Beyond: Managing Copyright Policy Through Institutional And Technological Change, Brandy Karl

Charleston Library Conference

Copyright issues are important to every library, large and small. Libraries, librarians, and library staff are protected by a host of exceptions and copyright rules that are often not followed correctly or at all. This article discusses easy, simple compliance with the laws protecting libraries from infringements made on the traditional library premises.

Further, the library’s work is increasingly off‐site. From virtual consultations to delivering digitized materials off‐site, copyright law can affect the depth and breadth of online services that would otherwise be equivalent to in‐person patron services. The paper describes “virtual library premises” and discusses the legal ramifications of …
