Effects Of Winning Percentage On Men’S Collegiate Basketball After Investments In Facilities, Matthew D. Frank
Effects Of Winning Percentage On Men’S Collegiate Basketball After Investments In Facilities, Matthew D. Frank
Purdue Polytechnic Directed Projects
Throughout studying the impacts of investments on facilities and its potential impacts on Men’s Basketball overall success within the conferences we were able to find some indicators that would suggest the financial investments do have an impact but we would need to study more teams to see a possible statistical significance. Although statistical significance was not found within the current study (.13 was found with an alpha set at .10) my suggestion and observations throughout this study show that facilities play a major role in the overall success of a program and spending will continue to take place as the …
Does Ideological Education In China Suppress Trust In Religion And Foster Trust In Government?, Ying Xie, Yunping Tong, Fenggang Yang
Does Ideological Education In China Suppress Trust In Religion And Foster Trust In Government?, Ying Xie, Yunping Tong, Fenggang Yang
Department of Sociology Faculty Publications
A major goal of ideological education in China is to promote loyalty to the party-state and to instill atheism among the people. How effective is this ideological education? This article examines the relationship between education and trust in government and trust in religion using data from the 2010 Chinese General Social Survey. We find that education is negatively associated with trust in government, while positively related to trust in religion. Our findings suggest that policies aimed at displacing religion in favor of the Communist ideology have largely failed to shape the public mindset; rather, the more educated, the more people …
Problem-Based Assignments As A Trigger For Developing Ethical And Reflective Competencies, Dieter Euler, Patrizia Kühner
Problem-Based Assignments As A Trigger For Developing Ethical And Reflective Competencies, Dieter Euler, Patrizia Kühner
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
The following research question serves as the starting point of this research and development project: How, in the context of a didactic design, can problem-based assignments trigger learning activities for the development of ethical and reflective competencies in students in economics courses? This paper focuses on the design of problem-based assignments as a trigger for purposeful learning activities, and, based on the literature, summarizes the principles of problem-based assignment design. A case study on the “city economics” topic outlines the implementation of these principles in a specific economics class context. In the context of a design-based research approach, the development …

The collection, organization, and retrieval of industrial media is a pervasive challenge that is especially glaring for companies in the AEC industry. Construction projects often generate large volumes of pictures & videos from the field for tracking progress and communicating between engineers, contractors, and subcontractors. It is not uncommon for field personnel to capture hundreds of photos per week on any given jobsite.
Smartvid.io is a cloud-based software solution designed for the specific needs of industrial media. The application’s internal deep-learning engines, collectively nicknamed VINNIE (for ‘Very Intelligent Neural Network for Insight and Evaluation’), use speech and image recognition to …
Internal And External Factors Influencing Enrollment Into An Undergraduate Arabic Language Program In Indiana: A Survey Of University Freshmen And Sophomores, Tyler J. Mallari
Internal And External Factors Influencing Enrollment Into An Undergraduate Arabic Language Program In Indiana: A Survey Of University Freshmen And Sophomores, Tyler J. Mallari
Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses
Within the rankings of world languages, Arabic takes a prominent place, being the fifth most-spoken language in the world (Lane, 2016). Despite the surge of concern in modern media with relations in the Middle East, particularly in Arab-populated countries, very little focus has been put on improving enrollment in Arabic programs in the United States, and in particular in the Midwest. At Purdue University, enrollment in Arabic language courses have only been low and no effort has been made on the part of the university or the department to understand this trend from more than a purely statistical analysis of …

A Pilot “Big Data” Education Module Curriculum For Engineering Graduate Education: Development And Implementation, Megan R. Sapp Nelson, Line C. Pouchard
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Projects in engineering higher education increasingly produce data in the volume, variety, velocity, and need for veracity such that the output of the research is considered “Big Data”. While engineering faculty members do conceive of and direct the research producing this data, there may be gaps in faculty members’ knowledge in training graduate and undergraduate research assistants in the practical management of Big Data. The project described in this research paper details the development of a Big Data education module for graduate researchers in Electrical and Computer Engineering. The project has the following objectives: to document and describe current data …

A Safety Management Model For Far 141 Approved Flight Schools, Flavio A. C. Mendonca, Thomas Q. Carney
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
The Safety Management Annex (Annex 19), which became applicable in November 2013, consolidates safety management provisions previously contained in six other International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annexes, and will serve as a resource for overarching state safety management responsibilities. Through Annex 19, ICAO has required that its member states develop and implement safety management systems (SMS) to improve safety. This mandate includes an approved training organization that is exposed to aviation safety risks. In 2015, the FAA published AC 120-92B to provide guidance material for certificate holders operating under FAR 121, to implement and maintain an SMS. This AC may …
Art History And The Global Challenge: A Critical Perspective, Patrick D. Flores
Art History And The Global Challenge: A Critical Perspective, Patrick D. Flores
Artl@s Bulletin
The challenge of globalization and the “decolonization” of our way of thinking have become a major concern for most art historians. While it is still too early to assess the impact on the discipline of the “Global turn”—a turn that is all the more timid that it materializes more slowly in public collections and public opinions than in books—we nonetheless wanted to probe scholars who are paying close attention to the new practices in global art history. Coming from different cultural milieus and academic traditions, and belonging to different generations, they agreed to answer our questions, and to share with …

L’Histoire Mondiale De L’Art, Au Défi D’Un Grand Récit, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel
L’Histoire Mondiale De L’Art, Au Défi D’Un Grand Récit, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel
Artl@s Bulletin

Cellular networks have become an essential part of our lives. With increasing demands on its available bandwidth, we are seeing failures and performance degradations for data and voice traffic on the rise. In this paper, we propose the view that fog computing, integrated in the edge components of cellular networks, can partially alleviate this situation. In our vision, some data gathering and data analytics capability will be developed at the edge of the cellular network and client devices and the network using this edge capability will coordinate to reduce failures and performance degradations. We also envisage proactive management of disruptions …

Eco-Friendly (Green) Synthesis Of Magnetically Active Gold Nanoclusters, Naveen Reddy Kadasala, Lu Lin, Christopher Gilpin, Alexander Wei
Department of Chemistry Faculty Publications
Au–FexOy composite nanoparticles (NPs) are of great technological interest due to their combined optical and magnetic properties. However, typical syntheses are neither simple nor ecologically friendly, creating a challenging situation for process scale-up. Here we describe conditions for preparing Au–FexOy NPs in aqueous solutions and at ambient temperatures, without resorting to solvents or amphiphilic surfactants with poor sustainability profiles. These magnetic gold nanoclusters (MGNCs) are prepared in practical yields with average sizes slightly below 100 nm, and surface plasmon resonances that extend to near-infrared wavelengths, and sufficient magnetic moment (up to 6 emu g–1) to permit collection within minutes by …
Leaders Of The Pack: Women And The Future Of Veterinary Medicine, Julie Kumble, Donald Smith
Leaders Of The Pack: Women And The Future Of Veterinary Medicine, Julie Kumble, Donald Smith
New Directions in the Human-Animal Bond
Veterinary medicine has undergone sweeping changes in the last few decades. Women now account for 55 percent of the active veterinarians in the field, and nearly 80 percent of veterinary students are women. However, average salaries have dropped as this shift has occurred, and even with women in the vast majority, only 25 percent of leadership roles are held by women. These trends point to gender-based inequality that veterinary medicine, a profession that tilts so heavily toward women, is struggling to address. How will the profession respond? What will this mean for our students and schools? What will it mean …
A Comparison Of Malfunction-Related Accidents For General Aviation Aircraft Manufactured In 1970–1984 And 2000–2014, Douglas Boyd, Jochen Hinkelbein
A Comparison Of Malfunction-Related Accidents For General Aviation Aircraft Manufactured In 1970–1984 And 2000–2014, Douglas Boyd, Jochen Hinkelbein
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
The United States general aviation fleet is aging with aircraft manufactured 35–39 years ago representing the most prevalent group. Since older aircraft are more prone to airframe corrosion, fatigue, and brittle electrical wiring, the present study was undertaken to determine whether malfunction-related accidents for general aviation aircraft manufactured between 1970 and 1984 were elevated relative to airplanes produced more recently (2000–2014).
The NTSB aviation accident database was used to identify piston-powered airplane accidents occurring over the 2005–2014 period. Aircraft manufacture year and fleet activity data were from the FAA. Statistical analyses employed contingency tables and Poisson distributions.
The proportion of …
