Promoting Equity By Scaling Up Summer Engineering Experiences: A Retrospective Reflection On Tensions And Tradeoffs, Walter C. Lee, David B. Knight, Monica E. Cardella
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
A central challenge in engineering education is providing experiences that are appropriate for and accessible to underserved communities. However, to provide such experiences, we must better understand the process of offering a geographically distributed asset-based out-of-school program. This paper focuses on a collaborative research project that examined the broad implementation of the Summer Engineering Experiences for Kids (SEEK) program organized by the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). SEEK is a three-week summer program that engages participants in hands-on, team-based engineering design projects. NSBE’s goal is to make SEEK culturally sustaining, community-connected, and scalable. The purpose of this paper is …

Transnational Latinx Youths’ Workplace Funds Of Knowledge And Implications For Assets-Based, Equity-Oriented Engineering Education, Amy Wilson-Lopez, Jorge Acosta-Feliz
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Due to economic inequality in society, millions of Latinx high school youth work after-school jobs and summer jobs in order to provide additional income for their families. The purpose of this qualitative study, conducted with transnational Latinx youth, was to identify the engineering-related skills and bodies of knowledge they developed and applied while in different workplaces. This study is framed in complementary theories of funds of knowledge, Vygotskian theories of mediated action, and theories of resistant capital. Specifically, this study is based in the premise that youth can develop engineering-related funds of knowledge through tool-mediated, goal-directed activities jointly conducted with …

The Ingenuity Of Everyday Practice: A Framework For Justice-Centered Identity Work In Engineering In The Middle Grades, Angela M. Calabrese Barton, Kathleen Schenkel, Edna Tan
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Inequities in opportunities to learn and become in engineering, especially for minoritized youth, are enduring and systemic. How students experience engineering education, through curriculum, pedagogy, and teacher/student interactions, all shape opportunities for identity development. In this paper we draw upon cultural studies and critical ethnography to explore how and why students engage in engineering for sustainable communities and its relationship to their identity work. We ground our work in a justice-centered asset-based stance that centers how people’s lived lives and community wisdom yield powerful forms of cultural knowledge/practice relevant to learning and engaging in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We …
Quantitative And Qualitative Evaluation Of Various Positive-Displacement Compressor Modeling Platforms, Mohsin Mohsin Tanveer, Craig R. Bradshaw
Quantitative And Qualitative Evaluation Of Various Positive-Displacement Compressor Modeling Platforms, Mohsin Mohsin Tanveer, Craig R. Bradshaw
International Compressor Engineering Conference
Several regulatory measures aimed to mitigate climate change are forcing compressor manufacturers to replace current refrigerants to those with low Global Warming Potential (GWP). New refrigerants need to be evaluated to ensure adequate efficiency for use in modern products. Evaluation can be done heuristically, which is expensive and timeconsuming, while a carefully designed simulation model can provide similar outcomes for a significantly reduced cost. This paper presents a comparison between various userdeveloped and existing reciprocating compressor models to assist in the selection of a suitable modeling platform for a wideranging study. The reciprocating compressor is selected because of the simplicity …
Carbon Dioxide Medium Temperature Refrigeration System With Thermal Storage, Kirill Ignatiev, Kyaw Wynn
Carbon Dioxide Medium Temperature Refrigeration System With Thermal Storage, Kirill Ignatiev, Kyaw Wynn
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
Application of Carbon Dioxide as a natural, non-toxic, non-flammable refrigerant in refrigeration systems is steadily gaining interest, especially in locations with moderate climate, like Europe or Canada. However, it is a well-known fact that at higher ambient conditions, when CO2 system operates in transcritical mode, system efficiency is substantially reduced. Currently, there is a large variety of different techniques aimed at the CO2 refrigeration system efficiency enhancement at transcritical operation, like vapor injection, ejectors, expanders, multi-stage compression with intercooling (and combinations thereof) to name a few. On the other hand, thermal storage devices are gaining popularity in many applications including …
Investigation Of Air-Side Fouling Of Split System Outdoor Heat Exchangers: Characterization, Performance Effects, And Frost Formation Interactions, David Yuill, Yifeng Hu
Investigation Of Air-Side Fouling Of Split System Outdoor Heat Exchangers: Characterization, Performance Effects, And Frost Formation Interactions, David Yuill, Yifeng Hu
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
Fouling is generally believed to have a negative impact on heat exchanger performance, and has been studied extensively. Split systems, such as those that serve typical residential air-conditioners, have an air-to-refrigerant coil located outdoors, where it is subject to many airborne fouling agents, such as grass clippings, leaves, and dust. This research project took novel approach to testing the effects of air-side fouling. Instead of applying standardized fouling agents in a laboratory test, we collected fouled outdoor coils from field-deployed air-conditioners, and tested them in a laboratory. This allowed tight control and measurement, but with real fouling. The effects on …

Many parents of children under age 18 are faced with additional COVID-19 parenting- related stressors and may be experiencing increases in psychological difficulties; however, we have yet to investigate parent’s levels of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and adjustment disorder. Further, COVID-19 has served as a sobering reminder of the significant public health disparities in our society and it is critical to identify risk factors for poorer clinical outcomes. The primary objectives of the present study were to: (a) determine whether parents are reporting higher levels of pandemic-related stress, PTSS, and adjustment disorder than controls, (b) identify specific individual-level factors (e.g., …

Permeability Analysis Of Additively-Manufactured Wick Structures With Heat Exchanger Applications, Jordan Alexander Morrow, Carlos Espino Mendez, Melanie M Derby
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
Heat pipes and other heat transfer applications use capillary-driven liquid motion to enhance performance. This research uses water and a low surface tension fluid FC-40 to test additive-manufactured polymer wicks using a rateof-rise test. The rate-of-rise tests give a measure of the wicks’ performance capabilities as well as being able to calculate the wicks’ permeability and effective pore radius. Four wicks were measured having two different internal structures (i.e., 1.0 mm triangle and 1.75 mm square) and two external structures (i.e., layered and column). The 1.0 mm Triangle wicks performed better than their 1.0 mm Square counterparts for both water …

A Study On Computational Cost Reduction Of Simulations Of Phase-Change Material (Pcm) Embedded Heat Exchangers, Daniel Bacellar, Tanjebul Alam, Jiazhen Ling, Vikrant Aute
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
Thermal storage can be implemented using Phase-Change Materials (PCM), which absorb significant latent heat with a relatively small temperature change. PCM phase-change processes are transient and are driven by thermal diffusion and natural convection – the latter, especially for melting process. Modeling and simulation of PCM heat exchangers (HX’s) is typically computationally intensive due to the relatively complex time-dependent physics. Most of the PCM modeling work in the literature uses high-order modeling tools such as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Lattice-Boltzmann Method (LBM). For design purposes, the existing PCM modeling approaches are not practical, limiting researchers in their ability to …

A Numerical Study On The Pool Boiling With Foam Surface Enhancement Using Different Refrigerants, Mingkan Zhang, Kashif Nawaz, Cheng-Min Yang, Matthew Sandlin, William Asher, Brian Fricke, Anthony Gehl
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
The pool boiling process can be observed in several energy conversion processes including commercial and industrial refrigeration, industrial air-cooling operations, and power generation. The process becomes more involved when pool boiling in a tube bundle is considered. In the current study, a numerical model is developed to predict the key performance parameters of a flooded evaporator while considering a range of working fluids. A kettle reboiler configuration was considered, and a performance model was developed to account for boiling on individual tubes, merging of vapor bubbles, and movement under gravity. A volume of fluid (VOF) model was used to deal …
A Whole Building Life-Cycle Assessment Approach To Support Decision-Making For Sustainable Buildings, Hao Zhang, Jie Cai, James E. Braun
A Whole Building Life-Cycle Assessment Approach To Support Decision-Making For Sustainable Buildings, Hao Zhang, Jie Cai, James E. Braun
International High Performance Buildings Conference
Buildings account for 39% of the CO2 emissions in the U.S. Although emerging building energy-efficient technologies lead to improved energy efficiency and lower environmental impact in the operational phase, not much attention has been paid to the environmental impact associated with the materials and manufacturing of the building mechanical systems. This paper presents an integrated life-cycle assessment method for buildings that accounts for the embodied and use phase carbon impacts of the building and its mechanical systems. The proposed methodology relies on EnergyPlus to generate the use-phase energy consumption for any given building. A material 'grabber' routine was developed to …

A Trajectory Piecewise-Linear Approach To Model Order Reduction Of Vapor Compression Cycles, Jiacheng Ma, Donghun Kim, James E. Braun
A Trajectory Piecewise-Linear Approach To Model Order Reduction Of Vapor Compression Cycles, Jiacheng Ma, Donghun Kim, James E. Braun
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
This paper presents a reduced order modeling approach for dynamic vapor compression cycles (VCC) based on a trajectory piecewiselinear (TPWL) approximation and Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD). Unlike other model order reduction techniques that apply to nonlinear dynamic heat exchanger (HX) models, the TPWL approach first represents a finite volume HX model with a weighted combination of linearized models along some state trajectories. Linearization points are selected by the kmeans clustering algorithm, which enables control of the number of linearized pieces. Then, each of the full order linear pieces is reduced by projection onto a POD basis to form a reduced …
Refrigerant Concentration Mapping Using Real-Time Gas Monitoring; Phase I- Data Collection System Verification, Jethro Medina, Mary Koban
Refrigerant Concentration Mapping Using Real-Time Gas Monitoring; Phase I- Data Collection System Verification, Jethro Medina, Mary Koban
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
Environmental regulations are increasingly restricting the use of traditional high global warming potential (GWP) fluorinated refrigerants (1). Hydrofluorocarbons or HFCs are fluorinated refrigerants with zero ozone depletion potential (ODP). They are typified by having good shelf and use stability, material compatibility, adequate capacity and generally good performance across a range of operating conditions all while being non-flammable. However, due to the high GWP (>1000-5000), they are losing favor in the marketplace. Many international equipment standards (IEC 60335-2-24, IEC 60335-2-40, IEC 60335-2-89, etc.) and installation standards (ISO 5149) are being revised to further enable use of lower GWP, 0 ODP …

New Directions in the Human-Animal Bond
A primary mission of universities is promoting student success and well-being. Many college and university personnel have implemented initiatives that offer students the documented benefits of positive human-animal interaction (HAI). Accumulating evidence suggests that assistance dogs, therapy dogs, and shelter dogs can support student wellness and learning. The best programs balance the welfare of humans and canines while assessing students’ needs and complying with all laws and regulations. Contributors to this edited volume have drawn upon research across many disciplines as well as their extensive practical experiences to produce a timely and valuable resource—for administrators and students. Whether readers are …
Time Decay: Assets, Authoritarianism, And Anxiety About The Future, Jack Davies
Time Decay: Assets, Authoritarianism, And Anxiety About The Future, Jack Davies
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This article identifies a basic formula in the Freudo-Marxist take on twentieth-century authoritarianism. This is the incommensurability of inherited past development with the pace and demands of industrial social life, damming up a tremendous excess that seeks reactionary outlet. Authoritarianism, here, breeds in the contradiction between the symptoms of the Oedipal drama and the commodity form. The implicit “repressive hypothesis” for sexuality and developmentalist teleology make this theorization of authoritarian formations untenable today. This article, however, identifies moments of promise in this literature, and turns to materials available to these thinkers—specifically interwar psychoanalytic theory on anxiety and economic theory on …
Defending “Western” Values: Reactionary Neoliberalism In The Americas, Gabriela Segura-Ballar
Defending “Western” Values: Reactionary Neoliberalism In The Americas, Gabriela Segura-Ballar
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Right-wing populism and authoritarianism are on the rise globally after the financial crisis of 2008. This reactionary trend has widely channeled anxieties created by neoliberal insecurities into cultural and nationalistic backlash against the ostensible enemies of “Western” values (e.g., immigrants, racial and sexual minorities, feminists, and leftists). President Jair Bolsonaro’s “Brazil above everything, God above everyone” and President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” are the most conspicuous examples of the resurgence of a populist reactionary right in the Americas. This continental trend promotes ultra-nationalism and more coercive neoliberalization processes combined with a reactionary authoritarianism that celebrates essentialized “Western” values, …
Incipient Fascism: Black Radical Perspectives, Alberto Toscano
Incipient Fascism: Black Radical Perspectives, Alberto Toscano
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
The sordid twilight of the Trump presidency raised the stakes of the debate on fascism. While much of the discussion has been magnetised by the legitimacy of analogies with the 1930s, this article argues that a rich and complex tradition of Black radical critique of right-wing authoritarianism provides a vital resource for thinking through the problem of US fascism beyond analogy – beginning with the DuBoisian insight that a racial fascism forged by chattel slavery and settler-colonialism anticipated the ascendancy of European fascisms. The article homes in on Black radical theories of fascism developed in the wake of the movements …
Neo-Authoritarianism And The Contestation Of White Identification In The Us, Justin Gilmore
Neo-Authoritarianism And The Contestation Of White Identification In The Us, Justin Gilmore
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Justin Gilmore’s article "Neo-Authoritarianism and the Contestation of White Identification in the US" examines how the political forces around Donald Trump are often interpreted as an external attack on American democracy, and how the dynamism of these attacks is thought to emanate from various sites of white chauvinism. This article argues that such an interpretation is partial. The upsurge associated with “Trumpism” represents a distinctive contestation of an alternative type of white identity, one that has been elemental for a progressive form of neoliberalism. Although the neoliberal construction of white identification is distinctive, and indeed kinder, its material basis rests …
Neo-Authoritarianism Without Authority, Massimiliano Tomba
Neo-Authoritarianism Without Authority, Massimiliano Tomba
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This article examines two aspects of neo-authoritarianism. The first is mainly diagnostic and concerns the nature of authoritarianism as a phenomenon of transition. The article investigates tensions and conflicts between temporalities. It pays attention to the asynchronous nature of change which, alongside the social structural level of changes, also the psycho-social level, intervene politically in different forms. There are social strata that are strangers in their own country and do not share the same present with others. For them, looking to the past is the only way to imagine a different future. If they are looking for values and authority, …
A Trumpian Mechanism, Emmett Peixoto
A Trumpian Mechanism, Emmett Peixoto
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In 2016, a liar made a hypocrite appear worse and thereby won the US presidency. How did a liar, which is traditionally deemed something worse than a hypocrite, manage to do this? This article offers an answer. It does so by uncovering a peculiar mechanism, a Trumpian mechanism, at the heart of Trump’s relations with his critics. The mechanism explains how Trump benefited from wrong-footing his critics and is thus essential for understanding Trump’s success. The article offers a few key examples of this mechanism working against Trump’s political opponents, e.g., Trump’s (first) impeachment. It then shows how the mechanism …
Authoritarianism And Ideology, Asad Haider
Authoritarianism And Ideology, Asad Haider
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In “Authoritarianism and Ideology,” Asad Haider approaches the problem of authoritarianism by considering the classical question of tyranny, as framed by Spinoza, and how this can be traced to the Marxist theory of ideology. A fundamental axis of the debate over ideology in twentieth century Marxism was the phenomenon of fascism, theorized in highly influential but also markedly different ways by figures like Wilhelm Reich and Theodor Adorno. A close reading of two major texts—Reich's Mass Psychology of Fascism and Adorno's contributions to The Authoritarian Personality—provides a basis for conceptually elaborating different directions that can be taken in the study …

More Than “Just” Walking: An Observational Study Of Dog-Related Physical Activities, Benedikt Hielscher, Udo Ganslosser, Ingo Froboese
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
Dog ownership has been shown to correlate with physical activity (PA). However, knowledge about the intensities of dog-related PA (drPA) is still lacking. To investigate the duration and intensity of drPA in consideration of PA guidelines, an observational study of dog owners (DO) was conducted.
For this purpose, DO were recruited in metropolitan and nonmetropolitan regions of Cologne, Germany. A total of 44 male and female DO (18–64 years) without cardiovascular or cardiopulmonary diseases participated in the study. Validated questionnaires were used to determine the PA profile and relationship of DO to their dog. Participants reported their drPA in an …

A Comparison Of The Localized Aviation Mos Program (Lamp) And Terminal Aerodrome Forecast (Taf) Accuracy For General Aviation, Douglas D. Boyd, Thomas A. Guinn
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
Background. For general aviation (GA) pilots, operations in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) carry an elevated risk of a fatal accident. As to whether a general aviation flight can be safely undertaken, aerodrome-specific forecasts (TAF, LAMP) provide guidance. Although LAMP forecasts are more common for GA-frequented aerodromes, nevertheless, the FAA recommends that for such aerodromes (and for which a TAF is not issued) the airman uses the TAF generated for the geographically closest airport for pre-flight weather evaluation. Herein, for non-TAF-issuing airports, the LAMP (sLAMP) predictive accuracy for visual (VFR) and instrument (IFR) flight rules flight category was determined.
Method. sLAMP …
Bearing Witness To The Beauty Of Enactive Kinesthetic Empathy Across Species In Canine-Human And Equine-Human Interactions: Participant-Observation Ethnographies, Donna A. Carlyle, Pamela Graham
Bearing Witness To The Beauty Of Enactive Kinesthetic Empathy Across Species In Canine-Human And Equine-Human Interactions: Participant-Observation Ethnographies, Donna A. Carlyle, Pamela Graham
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
Through observations from ethnographic fieldwork the authors seek to highlight the significance of equine-human and canine-human communication to the fields of both human- animal studies and eudaimonia theories of human well-being. As we shared our insights through academic conversations about our respective research findings, we realized that both studies explore the enigmatic and significant concept of kinesthetic empathy in communication and relationship building between horses and young people and between dogs and young children. The canine-child setting (Study A) is a primary school and classroom in which the children voted to share their environment with a school dog, and the …
