The Cover Crop Seed Industry: An Indiana Case Study, John C. Tyndall, Adriana Valcu-Lisman, Melanie Bogert, Abigail Zobrodsky
Journal of Applied Farm Economics
Winter cover crops are plants used to protect soils during the period between the harvest and establishment of cash crops such as corn and soybeans, effectively providing farm fields with perennial cover. The total cost of cover crops varies considerably from site to site and year to year, yet the single costliest aspect of using cover crops is the cost of seed. Seed cost also tends to be the most volatile component of the cost of cover crop use, subject to complex supply dynamics associated with producing viable seed, storage capacity, and unpredictable regional demand. We conducted a survey of …

Farm Efficiency And Productivity Growth: The Effect Of Commodity Prices, Elizabeth Canales, Jason S. Bergtold, Allen Featherstone
Journal of Applied Farm Economics
Crop prices can affect farm productivity through input- output decisions. This study assesses the relationship between crop prices and productivity changes among a sample of Kansas farms. The changes in total factor productivity are evaluated using a nonparametric approach with a Malmquist productivity index and potential drivers of technical efficiency and productivity change are analyzed. Farms with higher leverage and greater diversification are likely to be more efficient and experience productivity change. Lower productivity occurred during years with higher crop prices, suggesting that innovation is more likely to occur when margins are tight.

Cut flower gifting preferences are relatively unexplored in Germany. This study proposes a model that investigates the impact of attitudinal, experiential, and socio-demographic factors on the cut flower gifting preferences of German consumers. For this purpose, an online survey with a representative sample of 978 German residents was conducted. Partial least squares structural equation modelling shows that active and passive engagement with plants and nature positively impact cut flower giving preferences through cut flower knowledge, cut flower fondness, and perceived versatility of cut flowers. For German women and men, the largest driver of cut flower giving preferences is the versatility …

Teaching With Data In The Social Sciences: The Purdue Report, Jane Yatcilla, Clarence Maybee, Bethany Mcgowan, Gang Shao, D Trevor Burrows
Libraries Reports
Purdue University Libraries participated in a multi-institution study about how instructors teach with data in social sciences courses. Thirteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with social sciences faculty who teach undergraduate students to use data, addressing questions about how faculty connect students to data; how students work with data; what types of support faculty have received that informs their teaching with data. Four broad themes emerged from qualitative coding of the interview transcripts: an array of purposes and practices for teaching about data; instructors' experiences, needs, and perspectives; managing wide-ranging student confidence and ability; technical concerns when teaching with data. The …

Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS) is caused by vertical transmission of Zika virus (ZIKV) to the gestating human fetus. A subset of CZS microcephalic infants present with reduced otoacoustic emissions; this test screens for hearing loss originating in the cochlea. This observation leads to the question of whether mammalian cochlear tissues are susceptible to infection by ZIKV during development. To address this question using a mouse model, the sensory cochlea was explanted at proliferative, newly post-mitotic or maturing stages. ZIKV was added for the first 24 h and organs cultured for up to 6 days to allow for cell differentiation. Results …

Prioritizing Roadway Pavement Marking Maintenance Using Lane Keep Assist Sensor Data, Justin Mahlberg, Rahul Suryakant Sakhare, Howell Li, Jijo Mathew, Darcy M. Bullock, Gopi C. Surnilla
Lyles School of Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
There are over four million miles of roads in the United States, and the prioritization of locations to perform maintenance activities typically relies on human inspection or semi-automated dedicated vehicles. Pavement markings are used to delineate the boundaries of the lane the vehicle is driving within. These markings are also used by original equipment manufacturers (OEM) for implementing advanced safety features such as lane keep assist (LKA) and eventually autonomous operation. However, pavement markings deteriorate over time due to the fact of weather and wear from tires and snowplow operations. Furthermore, their performance varies depending upon lighting (day/night) as well …

Competitive Advantage Of Geosmithia Morbida In Low-Moisture Wood May Explain Historical Outbreaks Of Thousand Cankers Disease And Predict The Future Fate Of Juglans Nigra Within Its Native Range, Geoffrey M. Williams, Matthew D. Ginzel
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
Bark beetles vector symbiotic fungi and the success of these mutualisms may be limited by competition from other microbes. The outcome of fungal competition is strongly influenced by the physical and chemical conditions of the wood they inhabit. These conditions are in turn subject to climatic variation. In particular, wood moisture content (MC) influences fungal competition and, therefore, could help determine environmental suitability for thousand cankers disease (TCD) caused by Geosmithia morbida and its vector Pityophthorus juglandis. We conducted competition experiments in Juglans nigra wood that was naturally or artificially colonized by G. morbida and other fungi over a range …

A Hybrid Acoustic Model For Composite Materials Composed Of Fibers And High Surface Area Particles, Zhuang Mo, Tongyang Shi, Seungkyu Lee, Yongbeom Seo, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
High surface area particles have drawn attention in the context of noise control due to their good sound absorption performance at low frequencies, which is an advantage compared with more traditional materials. That observation suggests that there is a good potential to use these particles in various scenarios, especially where low frequency noise is the main concern. To facilitate their application, composite materials are formed by dispersing particles within a fiber matrix, thus giving more flexibility in positioning those particles. In this work, a hybrid model that combines a model for limp porous materials and a model of high surface …

Fine Carbohydrate Structure Of Dietary Resistant Glucans Governs The Structure And Function Of Human Gut Microbiota, Arianna D. Romero Marcia, Tianming Yao, Ming-Hsu Chen, Renee E. Oles, Stephen R. Lindemann
Department of Food Science Faculty Publications
Increased dietary fiber consumption has been shown to increase human gut microbial diversity, but the mechanisms driving this effect remain unclear. One possible explanation is that microbes are able to divide metabolic labor in consumption of complex carbohydrates, which are composed of diverse glycosidic linkages that require specific cognate enzymes for degradation. However, as naturally derived fibers vary in both sugar composition and linkage structure, it is challenging to separate out the impact of each of these variables. We hypothesized that fine differences in carbohydrate linkage structure would govern microbial community structure and function independently of variation in glycosyl residue …

Cantidades Hechizadas Y Silogísticas Del Sobresalto: La Secreta Ciencia De José Lezama Lima, Ómar Vargas
Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures
Arguably the most important Cuban writer of the twentieth century, José Lezama Lima (1910–1976) is well-known as a poet, essayist, cultural promoter, and novelist, but not as a scientist. In fact, there is no evidence of any concrete relationship between him and any pure science discipline. How then it is possible to establish connections between Lezama’s literary works and the disciplines of science? How are certain scientific discoveries and developments, such as the theory of relativity, quantum mechanics, modern logic, thermodynamics, or the big bang theory, embraced in the cultural imaginary of Cuba during the first half of the twentieth …

Case Study Of An Automated Mower To Support Airport Sustainability, Sarah Hubbard, Adam Baxmeyer, Bryan Hubbard
Aviation Technology Faculty and Staff Publications
This paper documents a case study of an automated mower to support sustainability at an airport. Mowing is an essential component of an airport’s Wildlife Hazard Management Plan (WHMP), which reduces the risk of birds and other wildlife to aircraft operations. Many airports have large areas of land (hundreds or even thousands of acres), which requires significant resources to manage and mow; experience at the Purdue Airport (KLAF) suggests that automated mowing may support economic and environmental aspects of sustainability. Automated mowing supports economic efficiency by reducing personnel requirements, although personnel are still needed for inspections, maintenance, and “mower rescue” …

Low-Frequency Noise Control Using Layered Granular Aerogel And Limp Porous Media, Yutong Xue, Amrutha Dasyam, J Stuart Bolton, Bhisham Sharma
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
The acoustic absorption of granular aerogel layers with a granule sizes in the range of 2 to 40 μm is dominated by narrow-banded, high absorption regions in the low-frequency range and by reduced absorption values at higher frequencies. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of developing new, low-frequency noise reduction materials by layering granular aerogels with traditional porous sound absorbing materials such as glass fibers. The acoustic behavior of the layered configurations is predicted using the arbitrary coefficient method, wherein the granular aerogel layers are modeled as an equivalent poro-elastic material while the fibrous media and membrane are modeled …

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
Because of the high sound absorption they offer at low frequencies, there is a growing interest in high surface area particles and how they might be applied in noise control. Therefore, a model that can accurately predict the acoustic behavior of this type of materials will be useful in relevant applications. A poro-elastic model based on a combination of Biot theory and an existing rigid model of granular activated carbon (GAC) is introduced in the current work. The input parameters for this model consist of a certain number of properties that are known by measurement, and a set of values …
