Cooperation In Library User Education, Nancy Fjallbrant

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The aim of this paper is to examine which areas of user education are particularly suitable for interlibrary cooperation. Goals and objectives for user education are described. Examples of cooperative projects are given: the SCONUL project, the travelling workshop experiment, and multimedia program mes for on-line information retrieval. Clearing houses for information on library user education projects are then surveyed. Finally, possible areas for future cooperative projects are discussed.

Cooperation Between The Establishments Of Higher Education In Lausanne, T. J. Tanzer May 1979

Cooperation Between The Establishments Of Higher Education In Lausanne, T. J. Tanzer

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The city of Lausanne houses two Establishments of Higher Education, the University of Lausanne and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne.

While the university has a broader spectrum of subjects taught, certain, notably mathematics and the exact sciences, are taught at both. The boards of governors have mandated a study of the possibility of cooperation by the two libraries. The paper presents the exact situation in Lausanne, the implications for immediate close cooperation under an orthodox system and indicates where closer cooperation could be achieved with an automated system.

Cooperation Amongst The Science Libraries At Oxford University, Dennis Shaw

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In a historical introduction which traces the development of the Radcliffe Library alongside the Bodleian Library at Oxford it is shown how it took nearly two hundred years to establish a role for the Radcliffe as a science library. During this period, some of the science departments in the University of Oxford set up specialist libraries and from these beginnings has grown a very strong body of science departmental libraries. In spite of the richness and breadth of the literature collection in the University library nearly half of the scientific library resources in the University are devoted to supporting the …

Digital Processing Of Remotely Sensed Multispectral Data, Luis A. Bartolucci May 1979

Digital Processing Of Remotely Sensed Multispectral Data, Luis A. Bartolucci

LARS Technical Reports

Although it is well recognized that photointerpretation of the Landsat imagery can provide adequate information for mapping broad categories of land cover at a reconnaissance level, it is also true that the Landsat data in digital format (CCT's) together with numerical (computer-aided) analysis techniques can provide a great deal more information at a higher level of mapping detail with mapping units of approximately half a hectare.

This paper introduces the fundamental concepts involved in numerical analysis of multispectral scanner (MSS) data. Emphasis is placed in the description of the essential steps required to conduct a multispectral classification; that is, I. …

Sampling For Area Estimation: A Comparison Of Full-Frame Sampling With The Sample Segment Approach, Marilyn M. Hixson, Marvin E. Bauer, Barbara J. Davis Jan 1979

Sampling For Area Estimation: A Comparison Of Full-Frame Sampling With The Sample Segment Approach, Marilyn M. Hixson, Marvin E. Bauer, Barbara J. Davis

LARS Symposia

The objective of this investigation

was to evaluate the effect of sampling on

the accuracy (precision and bias) of crop

area estimates made from classifications

of Landsat MSS data. Full-frame classifications

of wheat and non-wheat for

eighty counties in Kansas were repetitively

sampled to simulate alternative

sampling plans. Four sampling schemes

involving different numbers of samples

and different size sampling units were

evaluated. The precision of the wheat

area estimates increased as the segment

size decreased and the number of segments

was increased. Although the average

bias associated with the various sampling

schemes was not significantly different,

the maximum absolute …

Transfer Of Remote Sensing Computer Technology To The Developing World---Case Examples, Charles K. Paul Jan 1979

Transfer Of Remote Sensing Computer Technology To The Developing World---Case Examples, Charles K. Paul

LARS Symposia

Computerized image processing represents a level of technology sufficiently advanced that the Agency for International Development (AID) has had years of problems attempting to set up the necessary equipment support. The theory of pattern recognition and various software algorithms, such as maximum likelihood, kth nearest neighbor, and supervised clustering, are difficult to teach to remote sensing resource managers and technicians with limited education in mathematics. Computer hardware is relatively complex and, in addition to requiring programming skills, both procedural level, as well as operating systems, also requires training in electronic "trouble-shooting" and computer maintenance to keep systems in operation.

Measurements Of Young's Modulus Of Elasticity Of The Canine Aorta With Ultrasound, D J. Hughes, Charles F. Babbs, L A. Geddes, J D. Bourland Jan 1979

Measurements Of Young's Modulus Of Elasticity Of The Canine Aorta With Ultrasound, D J. Hughes, Charles F. Babbs, L A. Geddes, J D. Bourland

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

We have developed an ultrasonic technique for determining the dynamic Young's modulus of elasticity (E) of the canine aorta in vivo. Young's modulus was measured in the descending thoracic aorta (DTA) and the abdominal aorta (AA) of 12 dogs over a range of mean blood pressures from 40-200 mmHg. The vessels were excised and dynamic moduli were determined in vitro postmortem from pressure-volume curves. The data so obtained were compared to the in vivo values. In vivo and in vitro moduli increased exponentially with mean distending pressure (P). The equation of best fit for these data was of the form …

A Method For Classifying Multispectral Remote Sensing Data Using Context, Philip H. Swain, Howard J. Stegel, Bradley W. Smith Jan 1979

A Method For Classifying Multispectral Remote Sensing Data Using Context, Philip H. Swain, Howard J. Stegel, Bradley W. Smith

LARS Symposia

A statistical model of spatial context is described and procedures for classifying remote sensing data using a context classifier are outlined. Experimental results are presented. Because the computational requirements of the context classifier are very large, its implementation on parallel/pipelined multiprocessor systems is being investigated. Some of the special considerations necessary for such implementations are described, with particular reference to implementation on an array of Control Data Corporation Flexible Processors.

Landsat Mss Coordinate Transformations, Berthold K. P. Horn, Robert J. Woodham Jan 1979

Landsat Mss Coordinate Transformations, Berthold K. P. Horn, Robert J. Woodham

LARS Symposia

A number of image analysis tasks require the registration of a surface model with an image. In-the case of satellite images, the surface model may be a map or digital terrain model in the form of surface elevations on a grid of points. We develop here an affine transformation between coordinates of Multi-Spectral Scanner (MSS) images produced by the Landsat satellites, and coordinates of a system lying in a plane tangent to the earth's surface near the sub-satellite (Nadir) point.

Imagery Processing System And Its Applications, N. V. Kulkov, V. P. Pyatkin Jan 1979

Imagery Processing System And Its Applications, N. V. Kulkov, V. P. Pyatkin

LARS Symposia

The existing disproportion between high efficiency of imagery receipt process and low productivity of the ways of their processing makes actual the creation of an Imagery Processing System, which may be used for the estimation of the efficiency of new hardware and mathematical methods of picture processing.

The main idea of hardware functional organization is compatibility of special purpose processors and input/output image units with a base computing system in external memory on the disks and tapes level.

The base computing system includes three BESM-6 computers with the total external memory field on the disks. The terminal computer (minicomputer M-6000) …

A Parametric Model For Multispectral Scanners, Bijan G. Mobasseri, Clare D. Mcgillem, Paul E. Anuta Jan 1979

A Parametric Model For Multispectral Scanners, Bijan G. Mobasseri, Clare D. Mcgillem, Paul E. Anuta

LARS Symposia

Efficient acquisition and utilization of remotely sensed data requires an extensive a priori evaluation of the performance of the basic data collection unit, the multispectral scanner. The objective is the development of a fully parametric technique to theoretically evaluate the systems response in any desired operational environment and provide the necessary information in selecting a set of optimum parameters.

In this paper the multispectral scanner spatial characteristics are represented by a linear shift-invariant multiple-port system where the N spectral bands comprise the input processes. The scanner characteristic function, the relationship governing the transformation of the input spatial and hence spectral …
