Mounting evidence suggests that geographic ranges of tree species worldwide are shifting under global environmental changes. Little is known, however, about whether and how this substantial migration of tree species may cause an overall type of forest as an ensemble of one or more tree species to migrate out of its geographic range. Here, using ground-sourced forest inventory data from 596,282 sample plots with repeated measurements, we classified forested regions in North America into eight biomes and 43 forest types, and further quantified forest migration – the shift in the geographic range of these forest types over the past 50 …

Can countries reorient their productive capacity to become more environmentally friendly and inclusive? To investigate this question this paper uses a standard Input-Output modeling framework and data from 141 countries and regions to construct a new global dataset of employment, value-added, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (disaggregated into CO2 and Non-CO2 elements), and air pollution (including nine categories of air pollutants such as PM2.5) multipliers from supply side investments. We find that many of the traditional sectors in agriculture and industry have large employment multipliers, but also generate male dominant, lower skill employment, and tend to have higher emission multipliers. It …

On A Small Glossary Of Academic Anti-Intellectualism, William Díaz Villarreal
On A Small Glossary Of Academic Anti-Intellectualism, William Díaz Villarreal
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This article presents the Small Glossary of Anti-intellectualism, where the most common rhetorical strategies and themes of contemporary academic anti-intellectualism are commented on. Anti-intellectualism is as old as intellectual life itself. However, its contemporary version is historically and sociologically rooted in the very structure of modern culture industry. It is a manifestation of a now universal pseudo-culture (Halbbildung) which, according to Adorno, has become the “dominant form of contemporary consciousness.” Arthur Schlesinger said that anti-intellectualism has long been the anti-Semitism of the businessman; today, anti-intellectualism is certainly the antisemitism of several social and political groups, including academia …
Inventing The Baby Saver: An Activity Systems Analysis Of Applied Engineering At The High School Level, Jessica Gale
Inventing The Baby Saver: An Activity Systems Analysis Of Applied Engineering At The High School Level, Jessica Gale
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Extant research and engineering education frameworks call for students to engage in personally meaningful engineering projects; however, there are few case studies documenting the work of young engineers working to design solutions to real-world problems that matter to them. This qualitative case study describes the work of a purposively selected group of high school engineering students (the InvenTeam) (n = 15) as they devote a school year to a particularly ambitious invention project: designing and prototyping a device to mitigate deaths occurring when children are left unattended in hot cars. Utilizing cultural historical activity theory as a theoretical and …
Getting By With A Little Help From Friends: A Qualitative Case Study Of Students’ Strategies For Coping With Failure In An Undergraduate Biology Laboratory Course, Soo Won Shim, Nancy Pelaez
Getting By With A Little Help From Friends: A Qualitative Case Study Of Students’ Strategies For Coping With Failure In An Undergraduate Biology Laboratory Course, Soo Won Shim, Nancy Pelaez
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
Recent emphasis on research competencies in undergraduate biology education means that more students are doing course-based research. Professional research scientists learn from failed research, but undergraduate students who encounter failure in their biology lab research may not always respond in ways that advance their learning. There is a need to examine individual students’ responses to failed research as they conduct investigations in an undergraduate lab course. Here, we report a qualitative research case study based on data from interviews and course work to examine five undergraduate students’ emotional responses, coping strategies, and perceptions of learning as they confronted failure in …

Vapor-Selective Active Membrane Energy Exchanger With Mechanical Ventilation And Indoor Air Recirculation, Andrew J. Fix, Bryan C. Pamintuan, James Braun, David M. Warsinger
School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
It is widely known that increasing outdoor air ventilation rates in buildings can help improve indoor air quality and mitigate the spread of diseases. However, cooling and dehumidifying outdoor air requires significantly more energy than treating indoor recirculated air. Recent developments in water vapor-selective membranes, which use a vapor partial pressure gradient to remove water vapor from air, offer a unique opportunity to provide highly efficient dehumidification in HVAC systems that can justify high outdoor air ventilation rates without drastic increases in energy consumption. This work presents an analysis of a novel membrane HVAC system referred to as the Active …

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Empathy is a critical part of the engineering design process. It allows engineers to more deeply understand their clients’ perspectives and design solutions that meet the needs of diverse stakeholders. Studies also show that reframing engineering education to prioritize empathy for others can counteract stereotypes of engineering as impersonal and invite a wider range of identities into the field. This approach can help to address persistent gender disparities in engineering, which reflect a need for engineering education to increase its efforts to include girls’ perspectives. Informal learning environments have developed strategies for framing engineering problems in human-centered ways, but more …

Comparison Of The Performance Of The Observation-Based Hybrid Edmf And Edmf-Tke Pbl Schemes In 2020 Tropical Cyclone Forecasts From The Globalnested Hurricane Analysis And Forecast System, Andrew Hazelton, Jun A. Zhang, Sundararaman Gopalakrishnan
Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences Faculty Publications
Better representation of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) in numerical models is one of the keys to improving forecasts of TC structure and intensity, including rapid intensification. To meet this goal, our recent work has used observations to improve the eddy-diffusivity mass flux with prognostic turbulent kinetic energy (EDMF-TKE) PBL scheme in the Hurricane Analysis and Forecast System (HAFS). This study builds on that work by comparing a modified version of EDMF-TKE (MEDMF-TKE) with the hybrid EDMF scheme based on a K-profile method (HEDMF-KP) in the 2020 HAFS-globalnest model. Verification statistics based on 101 cases in the 2020 season demonstrate …

Early Elementary Students’ Use Of Shape And Location Schemas When Embedding And Disembedding, Laura Bofferding, Lizhen Chen, Sezai Kocabas, Mahtob Aqazade
Purdue Center for Early Learning Faculty and Staff Publications
Elementary students’ early development of embedding and disembedding is complex and paves the way for later STEM learning. The purpose of this study was to clarify the factors that support students’ embedding (i.e., overlapping shapes to form a new shape) and disembedding (i.e., identifying discrete shapes within another shape) through the use of filled shapes as opposed to shape frames. We recruited 26 Grade 1 students (~6–7 years old) and 23 Grade 3 students (~8–9 years old), asked them to work on two layered puzzle designs from the Color Code puzzle game, and interviewed them about their thinking processes. The …

Influence Of Core Temperature On Psychomotor Performance During Cold Weather Military Training, Douglas Jones, Rebecca Weller, Stephen Eggan, Nicholas Roberts, Weimin Zheng, Jay Heaney, Timothy Dunn
Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments
Purpose: Cold environments may deteriorate psychomotor performance due to slowing of neuronal signals, distractions caused by pain and discomfort, and a loss of manual dexterity. The extent to which core temperature (Tc) influences psychomotor performance in the cold has not been established. Therefore, psychomotor performance and Tc were assessed during a cold weather military training exercise to evaluate this relationship.
Methods: Thirty-six military personnel (age: 26 ± 4 yr, ht: 175 ± 8 cm, wt: 79.1 ± 11.1 kg) participating in cold weather training volunteered for this study. Participants completed a 10-min immersion in cold (1°C) water, …
Walking On ‘‘Mars’’: Gendered Group Processes In Space Analog Missions, Inga Popovaite, Alison J. Bianchi
Walking On ‘‘Mars’’: Gendered Group Processes In Space Analog Missions, Inga Popovaite, Alison J. Bianchi
Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments
Most research on mixed-gender teams in space analog environments focuses on individual-level variation and overlooks structural causes of inequality. Status characteristics theory posits how socially recognized traits, such as gender, contribute to the formation of informal hierarchies by denoting perceived levels of competence to group members. We investigated gender as a status characteristic in groups in space analog environments. We used data from the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) and hypothesized that women crew members are less likely than men to be selected to participate in simulated extravehicular activities during a Mars simulation at the MDRS. We used reports and …

Towards A Burden-Free Implicit Authentication For Wearable Device Users, Bryan Lee, Sudip Vhaduri
Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship
The state of current knowledge-based wearable authentication systems requires users to physically interact with a device to initiate and validate their presence, thereby imposing a burden on the user. However, with the recent advancements of sensor technologies in consumer smart wearables (e.g., Fitbit and Apple watches), we were able to utilize vectors of statistical features extracted from the continuous stream of data from these IoT devices to implicitly validate a user's activities and its spatiotemporal context via the use of machine learning techniques. To improve the performance of our models, additional soft biometric data (i.e., respiratory sounds) was collected, and …

Development Of In-Situ Sensing Method For The Monitoring Of Water-Cement (W/C) Values And The Effectiveness Of Curing Concrete, Rui He, Na (Luna) Lu, Jan Olek
JTRP Technical Reports
As the most widely used construction material, concrete is very durable and can provide long service life without extensive maintenance. The strength and durability of concrete are primarily influenced by the initial water-cement ratio value (w/c), and the curing condition during the hardening process also influences its performance. The w/c value is defined as the total mass of free water that can be consumed by hydration divided by the total mass of cement and any additional pozzolanic material such as fly ash, slag, silica fume. Once placed, field concrete pavements are routinely cured with liquid membrane-forming compounds. For laboratory study, …

Despite the importance of faculty diversity training for advancing an inclusive society, little research examines whether participation improves inclusion perceptions and belongingness. Integrating training and diversity education literature concepts, this study examines the effectiveness of training targeting microaggressions in six STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) oriented departments at a research-intensive university. Reactions data collected at the end of face-to-face training suggested that participation generally increased inclusion understanding. Self-assessments on inclusion concepts collected from 45% of participants before and three weeks after training suggest participation increases perceptions of the importance of inclusion, microaggression allyship awareness, inclusive behaviors, and organizational identification. Compared …
