Performance Analysis Of A Class Of Nonlinear Spectral Filters, D. L. Zimmerman, 0. K. Ersoy May 1992

Performance Analysis Of A Class Of Nonlinear Spectral Filters, D. L. Zimmerman, 0. K. Ersoy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Analyses and experimental results for the symmetric nonlinear matched filter (SNMF) and the non-symmetric nonlinear matched filter (nonSNMF) are presented. The properties studied are signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), resolution, and intermodulation. Additionally, for the hard-limiter nonlinearity, optimum threshold selection and probability of error for the SNMF are investigated. The SNMF is composed of a spectral transformation followed by a pointwise nonlinear transformation. This transformation is applied to both the reference signal and the received signal, which is then multiplied in the transform domain. The non-SNMF system involves the nonlinear transformation of only the filter transfer function prior to multiplication with the …

Bayesian Signal Reconstruction From Fourier Transform Magnitude In The Presence Of Symmetries And X-Ray Crystallography, Peter C. Doerschuk Apr 1992

Bayesian Signal Reconstruction From Fourier Transform Magnitude In The Presence Of Symmetries And X-Ray Crystallography, Peter C. Doerschuk

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In Ref. [I] a signal reconstruction problem motivated by x-ray crystallography was solved using a Bayesian statistical approach. The signal is zero-one, periodic, and substantial statistical a priori information is known, which is modeled with a Markov random field. The data are inaccurate magnitudes of the Fourier coefficients of the signal. The solution is explicit and the computational burden is independent of the signal dimension. In Ref, [2] a detailed parameterization of the a priori model appropriate for crystallography was proposed and symmetry-breaking parameters in the riolution were usecl to perform data-dependent adaptation of the estimator. The adaptation attempts to …

Nonlinear Adaptive Signal Processing, S.-W. Deng, O.K. Ersoy Apr 1992

Nonlinear Adaptive Signal Processing, S.-W. Deng, O.K. Ersoy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Nonlinear techniques for signal processing and recognition have the promise of achieving systems which are superior to linear systems in a number of ways such as better performance in terms of accuracy, fault tolerance, resolution, highly parallel architectures and cloker similarity to biological intelligent systems. The nonlinear techniques proposed are in the form of multistage neural networks in which each stage can be a particular neural network and all the stages operate in parallel. The specific approach focused upon is the parallel, self-organizing, hierarchical neural networks (PSHNN's). A new type of PSHNN is discussed such that the outputs are allowed …

A Study Of Numerical Integration Techniques For Use In The Companion Circult Method Of Transient Circuit Analysis, Charles A. Thompson Apr 1992

A Study Of Numerical Integration Techniques For Use In The Companion Circult Method Of Transient Circuit Analysis, Charles A. Thompson

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Circuit transient analysis packages such as SPICE and EMTP are very widely used, but detailed information on the internal structure and error characteristics for these software packages is lacking. Both SPICE and EMTP rely on numerical integration to approximate the transient response of circuit elements. The numerical integration methods used in the packages are not necessarily the most accurate approximations to the actual response of a circuit. The study of these numerical integration methods and their error characteristics is the focus of this thesis. Comparisons are made between several methods in terms of accuracy and stability as well as algorithm …

Design Curves For Transient Heat Flow In Semiconductor Devices, James A. Cooper, Jr. Mar 1992

Design Curves For Transient Heat Flow In Semiconductor Devices, James A. Cooper, Jr.

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

We have ]performed a numerical simulation of heat flow in a cylindrical solid having a ,geometry typical of semiconductor devices. We present curves of temperature as a function of time, normalized to the thermal constants and the surface herat flux. These curves can be used in the design of serniconductor devices where transient or steady state temperature rise is a consideration.

Mathematical Analysis Of The Joint Motion Of Redundant Robots Under Pseudo-Inverse Control, Shengwu Luo, Shaheen Ahmad Mar 1992

Mathematical Analysis Of The Joint Motion Of Redundant Robots Under Pseudo-Inverse Control, Shengwu Luo, Shaheen Ahmad

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Redundant robots that are kinematically controlled using Jacobian pseudo-inverses may not have repeatable joint motions, when the end-effector traces a closed path in the workspace. This phenomenon is known as joint drift. The joint drift problem was initially observed and analyzed by Klein and Huang[lO]. Shamir and Yomdin(l5J also analyzed this problem using differential geometric approach. Klein and Kee[ll.] observed through numerical experiments that the drift had predictable properties. In this paper we present a measure of the drift motion, we show this measure is useful for predicting the stability properties of drifts. We further show that this measure of …

Three-Dimensional Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (Igbt) Development, P.V. Gilbert, G.W. Neudeck Mar 1992

Three-Dimensional Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (Igbt) Development, P.V. Gilbert, G.W. Neudeck

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

A new insulated gate bipolar transistor structure, the 3D-IGBT, is presented. The 3D-IGBT utilizes selective epitaxial silicon to form a top contacted anode and still retain the cellular structure of vemcally oriented devices. The 3D-IGBT , unlike other fully integrable power devices, exploits the merits of cellular structure to increase its packing density and thus reduce its on-resistance per unit area. It also eliminates the parasitic JFET resistance found in vertical IGBT's. To integrate the 3D-IGBT with low power devices, the QDI method of device isolation is also presented. QDI uses a combination of JI and DI to electrically isolate …
