An Empirical Study On How Program Layout Affects Cache Miss Rates, Jeffrey P. Bradford, Russell W. Quong Jun 1995

An Empirical Study On How Program Layout Affects Cache Miss Rates, Jeffrey P. Bradford, Russell W. Quong

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Cache miss rates are quoted for a specific program, cache configuration, and input set; the effect of program layout on the miss rate has largely been ignored. We examine the variation of the miss rate resulting from randomly chosen layouts, the miss variation, for several cache configurations (cache size, lines size, and set-associativity), input sets, and optimization levels for five programs in the SPEC benchmark suite. We observed miss rates that varied from 0.6m to 1.8m, where m is the mean miss rate. We did not observe any consistently good layouts across different parameters; in contrast, several layouts were consistently …

Image Representation And Compression Using Multisplines And Adaptive Scale-Space Atom Selection , Shankar Moni, R. L. Kashyap Jun 1995

Image Representation And Compression Using Multisplines And Adaptive Scale-Space Atom Selection , Shankar Moni, R. L. Kashyap

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

We define a new stochastic process for representing images. We call this process the Ordered-Tree process (OTP). We show the existence of such a process and derive the optimal compression algorithm for such a process. Experimental results have indicated that the algorithm outperforms many existing image compression algorithms. In order to define the stochastic process, we first define a Tree-Structured analysis (TSA). This is a generalization of a multiresolution analysis (MRA) that extracts only those properties of an MRA that serve well in image compression. In particular, we place no requirement on self-similarity or orthogonality of basis functions. We give …

Linsker-Type Hebbian Learning: A Qualitative Analysis On The Parameter Space, Jianfeng Feng, Hong Pan, Vwani Roychowdhury

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

We propose a novel rigorous approach for the analysis of the Linsker's unsupervised Hebbian learning network. The behavior of this model is determined by the underl~ingn onlinear dynamics that are parameterized by a set of parameters originating from the Hebbian rule and the arbor density of the synapses. These parameters determine the presence or absence of a specilic receptive field (also referred to as a 'connection pattern') as a saturated fixed point attractor of the model. In this paper, we perform a qualitative analysis of the underlying nonlinear dynamics over the parameter space, determine the effects of the system parameters …

Its Wireless Narrowband Digital Communication Architecture Design Report, Michael P. Fitz,, Jimm Grirnm, Tim Magnusen, Wen Yi Kuo, Tai Ann Chen, Jerome Gansman, Lance Bodnar

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This report provides a detailed overview of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) narrowband digital communicator project. The project is the building and fiel~dte sting of a high performance modem architecture on the 220MHz radio channels allocatied to ITS. This architecture will provide greater than 12kbitsls transmission rate by using state of the art techniques to develop a new paradigm in bandwidth efficient land mobile communications. The main goals; are to develop a recursive model based optimum demodulator and to implement the architecture necessary for actual field tests. The modulation scheme optimizes the use of transmitter antenna diversity, forward error control …

Detecting Stator And Rotor Winding Faults In Three-Phase Induction Machines, Jeffrey C. Robertson, Chee Mun Ong Mar 1995

Detecting Stator And Rotor Winding Faults In Three-Phase Induction Machines, Jeffrey C. Robertson, Chee Mun Ong

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The purpose of this work is to investigate the efficiency of existing methods for on-line fault detection when applied to three-phase induction motors, spc:cifically to test known theoretical calculations of harmonics developed by certain types of faults experimentally. The work involves the development of equipment and test procedures needed and research of existing methods of fault detection. The experiments are cor~ductedb y planting a fault in a test induction machine and then performing a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) on the line current. The processed data are then compared with those from the same test machine before the fault was planted. …
