Mechanics Of Cpr Performed With The Patient On A Soft Bed Versus A Hard Surface, John M. Boe, Charles F. Babbs Jan 1999

Mechanics Of Cpr Performed With The Patient On A Soft Bed Versus A Hard Surface, John M. Boe, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Objective: To study the effects of underlying bed softness versus stiffness on the effectiveness of chest compressions in CPR. Methods: For a wide range of bed stiffness constants, mathematical models describing compression of the human chest supported by a hospital bed were created for an adult thorax experiencing either a sinusoidal compressive force or a sinusoidal sternal displacement. Results: With 5 cm peak displacement, sternum-to-spine compression fell from 4.3 to 1.0 cm, and peak power fell from 59 to 23 Watts, as bed stiffness decreased from 50,000 to 5,000 N/m. Less than 35% of maximal chest compression occurred at a …

Heuristics And A Mathematical Framework For Scheduling Data Requests In A Distributed Communication Network , Mitchell D. Theyst, Min Tan, Noah B. Beck, H. J. Siegel Purdue University School Of Electrical And Computer Engineering, Michael Jurczyk

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Providing up-to-date input to users' applications is an important data managemerit problem for a distributed computing environment, where each data storage location and intermediate node may have specific clata available, storage limitations, and communication links available. Sites in the network request data items and each request has an associated deadline and priority. In a military situation, the data staging problem involves positioning data for facilitating a faster access time when it is, needed by programs that will aid in decision making. This work concentrates on solving a basic version of the clata staging problem in which all parameter values for …

Steel Bridge Protection Policy: Life Cycle Cost Analysis And Maintenance Plan, Jon D. Fricker, Tarek Zayed, Luh M. Chang

JTRP Technical Reports

The study identifies various painting systems that are successfully used in Indiana's surrounding states and other industries. the identified systems are further screened and evaluated. After prudently comparing INDOT's inorgainc zinc/vinyl system with the waterborne acrylic system, the moisture cure urethane coating system and the 3-coat system of zinc-epoxy-urethane, the sresults show that thte new 3-coat system fulfills INDOT's needs with the most benefits. Therefore, the 3-coat system is recommended to replace INDOT present inorgaic zinc/vinyl system. To deal with the problems facing the lead-based paint, a comparison between full-removal and over-coating alternatives is made. Results show that over-coating might …

Reconciled Platoon Accommodations At Traffic Signals, Jay Wasson, Montasir Abbas, Darcy M. Bullock, Avery Rhodes, Chong Kang Zhu Jan 1999

Reconciled Platoon Accommodations At Traffic Signals, Jay Wasson, Montasir Abbas, Darcy M. Bullock, Avery Rhodes, Chong Kang Zhu

JTRP Technical Reports

The use of microprocessor-based traffic signal controllers introduced in the 1960s has allowed for the development of many new strategies to make traffic signal systems more responsive to traffic conditions. Many efforts have focused on the development of real-time, adaptive control strategies. While some of these strategies have been shown to improve intersection performance, there are several factors that have limited their deployment. Some of these include substantial capital cost, complicated calibration procedures, and the reluctance of practicing engineers to deploy strategies radically different from those currently in use. Therefore, lower cost strategies that are compatible with existing infrastructure continue …

Sample-Adaptive Coding Scheme (Sacs): A Structurally Constrained Vector Quantizer, Dong Sik Kim, Ness B. Shroff Nov 1998

Sample-Adaptive Coding Scheme (Sacs): A Structurally Constrained Vector Quantizer, Dong Sik Kim, Ness B. Shroff

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this paper, we propose a novel feed-forward adaptive coding scheme called SACS (sample adaptive coding scheme) for the lossy compression of a discrete-time memoryless stationary source. SACS is based on a concept of adaptive quantization to the varying samples of the source and is very different from traditional adaptation techniques for non-stationary sources. SACS quantizes each solirce sample using a sequence of quantizers. Even when using scalar quantization in SACS, we can ach.ieve performance comparablse to vector quantization (with the complexity still of the order of scalar quantization). We also show tihat important lattice based vector quantizers can be …
