Drexel University, The University Of Maryland, And Their Libraries’ Experiences Collaborating With Various Research Programs, Jay Bhatt, John Meyer, Rafael Sidi
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Last year, researchers and librarians at both Drexel University and the University of Maryland initiated similar collaborative projects in their respective institutions to contribute to the development of life-long learning skills among the select participants. One joint finding was the importance of linking advances in knowledge, not just as hypothetical learning that benefits an elite few, but rather for the advancement of our society as a whole. Drexel University has two NSF-supported programs, Research Experience for Teachers (RET) and the Research Experience for Undergraduates Site (REU) DREAM (Drexel Research Experience in Advanced Materials). RET’s primary goal is to provide experiential …
Adapting To Changing User Expectations, Jean Poland
Adapting To Changing User Expectations, Jean Poland
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Results of user surveys indicate that science and technology library user needs differ from those of humanists and social scientists and are changing rapidly. Science and technology libraries are taking the lead in adapting the public services model accordingly. Science and technology library users are most interested in easy-to-use access tools and library Web sites that enable them to find information on their own as well as easy access to materials from home and office. Their expectations are based on the speed of access provided by the Web and through search engines like Google. As fewer users come to the …

Convergence Between Interlibrary Loan And Acquisitions: A Science And Engineering Library Experience, Louis Houle
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Libraries are looking at new types of services to improve the dissemination of information to their users. One such new service, the integration of Interlibrary Loan with acquisitions and collection development, looks like a promising approach to meet the users’ information needs. The requests that meet selection criteria are not sent through the regular ILL borrowing channels but are instead turned into rush acquisitions. A special fund was set aside to purchase books requested by users (students, faculty and staff) through ILL processes. The ILL Librarian does both the selection of the ILL requests and the ordering of the books. …

Simulation Of Field-Emitted Electron Trajectories And Transport From Carbon Nanotubes, D. G. Walker, W. Zhang, Timothy Fisher
Simulation Of Field-Emitted Electron Trajectories And Transport From Carbon Nanotubes, D. G. Walker, W. Zhang, Timothy Fisher
Birck and NCN Publications
Carbon nanotubes exhibit excellent field-emission behavior characterized by low turn-on fields and large current densities. The present work investigates the transport of electrons by field emission and the resulting spatial distribution at the anode surface through simulation of the tunneling process and the trajectory of electrons across the vacuum gap. Beam spreading is characterized by a multidimensional potential, Coulomb interaction, and randomized energy distributions for closed and open single-walled nanotubes. Electron trajectories are determined by Monte Carlo simulation. Results indicate that the electron beam spreads primarily due to local field curvature near the emission site and that, for some nanotubes, …
The Discretized Schroedinger Equation And Simple Models For Semiconductor Quantum Wells, Timothy B. Boykin, Gerhard Klimeck
The Discretized Schroedinger Equation And Simple Models For Semiconductor Quantum Wells, Timothy B. Boykin, Gerhard Klimeck
Other Nanotechnology Publications
The discretized Schr¨odinger equation is one of the most commonly employed methods for solving one-dimensional quantum mechanics problems on the computer, yet many of its characteristics remain poorly understood. The differences with the continuous Schr¨odinger equation are generally viewed as shortcomings of the discrete model and are typically described in purely mathematical terms. This is unfortunate since the discretized equation is more productively viewed from the perspective of solid-state physics, which naturally links the discrete model to realistic semiconductor quantum wells and nanoelectronic devices. While the relationship between the discrete model and a one-dimensional tight-binding model has been known for …

Nonlinear Tapping Dynamics Of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Tipped Atomic Force Microcantilevers, S. I. Lee, S. W. Howell, Arvind Raman, R. Reifenberger, C. V. Nguyen, M. Meyyappan
Other Nanotechnology Publications
The nonlinear dynamics of an atomic force microcantilever (AFM) with an attached multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) tip is investigated experimentally and theoretically. We present the experimental nonlinear frequency response of a MWCNT tipped microcantilever in the tapping mode. Several unusual features in the response distinguish it from those traditionally observed for conventional tips. The MWCNT tipped AFM probe is apparently immune to conventional imaging instabilities related to the coexistence of attractive and repulsive tapping regimes. A theoretical interaction model for the system using an Euler elastica MWCNT model is developed and found to predict several unusual features of the measured …

Airline Quality Rating 2004, Brent D. Bowen, Dean E. Headley
Airline Quality Rating 2004, Brent D. Bowen, Dean E. Headley
Airline Quality Rating Report
The Airline Quality Rating (AQR) was developed and first announced in early 1991 as an objective method of comparing airline quality on combined multiple performance criteria. This current report, the Airline Quality Rating 2004, reflects monthly Airline Quality Rating scores for 2003. AQR scores for the calendar year 2003 are based on 15 elements in four major areas that focus on airline performance aspects important to air travel consumers.
The Airline Quality Rating 2004 is a summary of month-by-month quality ratings for U.S. airlines that have at least 1% of domestic passenger volume during 2003. Using the Airline Quality Rating …

Smooth Quantum Hydrodynamic Model Vs. Nemo Simulation Of Resonant Tunneling Diodes, Carl L. Gardner, Gerhard Klimeck, Christian Ringhofer
Other Nanotechnology Publications
The smooth quantum hydrodynamic model is an extension of the classical hydrodynamic model for semiconductor devices which can handle in a mathematically rigorous way the discontinuities in the classical potential energy which occur at heterojunction barriers in quantum semiconductor devices. Smooth QHD model simulations of the current-voltage curves of resonant tunneling diodes are presented which exhibit negative differential resistance—the experimental signal for quantum resonance effects—and are compared with the experimentally verified current-voltage curves predicted by the simulator NEMO, which uses a non-equilibrium Green function method.

Quantum Mechanical Analysis Of Channel Access Geometry And Series Resistance In Nanoscale Transistors, R. Venugopal, S. Goasguen, S. Datta, M. S. Lundstrom
Other Nanotechnology Publications
We apply a two-dimensional quantum mechanical simulation scheme to study the effect of channel access geometries on device performance. This simulation scheme solves the nonequilibrium Green’s function equations self-consistently with Poisson’s equation and treats the effect of scattering using a simple approximation inspired by Bu ̈ttiker. It is based on an expansion of the device Hamiltonian in coupled mode space. Simulation results are used to highlight quantum effects and discuss the importance of scattering when examining the transport properties of nanoscale transistors with differing channel access geometries. Additionally, an efficient domain decomposition scheme for evaluating the performance of nanoscale transistors …
