Airline Quality Rating 2005, Brent D. Bowen, Dean E. Headley Apr 2005

Airline Quality Rating 2005, Brent D. Bowen, Dean E. Headley

Airline Quality Rating Report

The Airline Quality Rating (AQR) was developed and first announced in early 1991 as an objective method for assessing airline quality on combined multiple performance criteria. This current report, the Airline Quality Rating 2005, reflects monthly Airline Quality Rating scores for 2004. AQR scores for the calendar year 2004 are based on 15 elements in four major areas that focus on airline performance aspects important to air travel consumers.

The Airline Quality Rating 2005 is a summary of month-by-month quality ratings for U.S. airlines that have at least 1% of domestic passenger volume during 2004. Using the Airline Quality Rating …

Combining Affymetrix Microarray Results., John R. Stevens, Rebecca W. Doerge Mar 2005

Combining Affymetrix Microarray Results., John R. Stevens, Rebecca W. Doerge

Department of Statistics Faculty Publications

Background

As the use of microarray technology becomes more prevalent it is not unusual to find several laboratories employing the same microarray technology to identify genes related to the same condition in the same species. Although the experimental specifics are similar, typically a different list of statistically significant genes result from each data analysis.

Results

We propose a statistically-based meta-analytic approach to microarray analysis for the purpose of systematically combining results from the different laboratories. This approach provides a more precise view of genes that are significantly related to the condition of interest while simultaneously allowing for differences between laboratories. …

Effects Of An Impedance Threshold Valve Upon Hemodynamics In Standard Cpr: Studies In A Refined Computational Model, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

An impedance threshold valve (ITV) is a new airway adjunct for resuscitation that permits generation of a small vacuum in the chest during the recoil phase of chest compression. Objectives: To explore in detail the expected magnitude and the hemodynamic mechanisms of circulatory augmentation by an ITV in standard CPR. Method: A 14-compartment mathematical model of the human cardiopulmonary system—upgraded to include applied chest compression force, elastic recoil of the chest wall, anatomic details of the heart and lungs, and the biomechanics of mediastinal compression—is exercised to explore the conditions required for circulatory augmentation by an ITV during various modes …

Quasiparticle Self-Energy And Many-Body Effective Mass Enhancement In A Two-Dimensional Electron Liquid, R. Asgari, B. Davoudi, M. Polini, G. F. Giuliani, M. P. Tosi, G. Vignale

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Motivated by a number of recent experimental studies we have revisited the problem of the microscopic calculation of the quasiparticle self-energy and many-body effective mass enhancement in an unpolarized two-dimensional electron liquid. Our systematic study is based on the many-body local field theory and takes advantage of the results of the most recent diffusion Monte Carlo calculations of the static charge and spin response of the electron liquid. We report extensive calculations of both the real and imaginary parts of the quasiparticle self-energy. We also present results for the many-body effective mass enhancement and the renormalization constant over a broad …

Coset methods are used to construct the action describing the dynamics of the (massive) Nambu-Goldstone scalar degree of freedom associated with the spontaneous breaking of the isometry group of AdS(d+1) space to that of an AdS(d) subspace. The resulting action is an SO(2,d) invariant AdS generalization of the Nambu-Goto action. The vector field theory equivalent action is also determined. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

A Direct Method For Locating Minimum-Energy Crossing Points (Mecps) In Spin-Forbidden Transitions And Nonadiabatic Reactions, T. Chachiyo, J. H. Rodriguez

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

An efficient computational method for locating minimum-energy crossing points (MECPs) between potential-energy surfaces in spin-crossover transitions and nonadiabatic spin-forbidden (bio)chemical reactions is introduced. The method has been tested on the phenyl cation and the computed MECP associated with its radiationless singlet-triplet spin crossover is in good agreement with available data. However, the convergence behavior of the present method is significantly more efficient than some alternative methods which allows us to study nonadiabatic processes in larger systems such as spin crossover in metal-containing compounds. The convergence rate of the method obeys a fast logarithmic law which has been verified on the …

Probing Attractive Forces At The Nanoscale Using Higher-Harmonic Dynamic Force Microscopy, S. Crittenden, A. Raman, R. Reifenberger Jan 2005

Probing Attractive Forces At The Nanoscale Using Higher-Harmonic Dynamic Force Microscopy, S. Crittenden, A. Raman, R. Reifenberger

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We systematically investigate higher harmonics in the vibration spectrum of scanning force microscope cantilevers operating in the attractive regime. We show that (a) the magnitudes of the higher-harmonic signals in the vibration spectrum should be directly correlated to the local van der Waals forces for systems without significant electrostatic interactions and (b) the higher-harmonic resonances are much sharper than the fundamental harmonic. Consequently, and unlike the case of the tapping mode operation, contrast in the amplitudes of the higher harmonics over a scanned sample with small electrostatic forces reflects changes in specific chemical composition. Dynamic force-distance curves and higher-harmonic images …

Reliability Of The 0-1 Test For Chaos, J. Hu, W. W. Tung, J. B. Gao, Y. H. Cao Jan 2005

Reliability Of The 0-1 Test For Chaos, J. Hu, W. W. Tung, J. B. Gao, Y. H. Cao

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

In time series analysis, it has been considered of key importance to determine whether a complex time series measured from the system is regular, deterministically chaotic, or random. Recently, Gottwald and Melbourne have proposed an interesting test for chaos in deterministic systems. Their analyses suggest that the test may be universally applicable to any deterministic dynamical system. In order to fruitfully apply their test to complex experimental data, it is important to understand the mechanism for the test to work, and how it behaves when it is employed to analyze various types of data, including those not from clean deterministic …

Friedel Oscillations In A Fermi Liquid, G. E. Simion, G. F. Giuliani Jan 2005

Friedel Oscillations In A Fermi Liquid, G. E. Simion, G. F. Giuliani

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The problem of the Friedel oscillations in two- and three-dimensional electron Fermi liquids is examined by means of the many-body local fields theory as aided by the most recent results of accurate numerical studies based on the quantum Monte Carlo method. Within linear response, an exact answer is obtained for the amplitude of the electron density distortion due to both short- and long-ranged impurity potentials. It is discussed how a measurement of the local environment of an impurity embedded in an otherwise homogeneous electron liquid can be used to characterize the systems as a Fermi liquid as well as to …

A Two-Temperature Model For Solid/Liquid Phase Change In Metal Foams, S. Krishnan, J. Y. Murthy, S V. Garimella Jan 2005

A Two-Temperature Model For Solid/Liquid Phase Change In Metal Foams, S. Krishnan, J. Y. Murthy, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Transient solid-liquid phase change occurring in a phase-change material (PCM) embedded in a metal foam is investigated. Natural convection in the melt is considered. Volume-averaged mass and momentum equations are employed, with the Brinkman- Forchheimer extension to the Darcy law to model the porous resistance. Owing to the difference in the thermal diffusivities between the metal foam and the PCM, local thermal equilibrium between the two is not assured. Assuming equilibrium melting at the pore scale, separate volume-averaged energy equations are written for the solid metal foam and the PCM and are closed using an interstitial heat transfer coefficient. The …

Relative Effectiveness Of Interposed Abdominal Compression Cpr: Sensitivity Analysis And Recommended Compression Rates, Charles F. Babbs Jan 2005

Relative Effectiveness Of Interposed Abdominal Compression Cpr: Sensitivity Analysis And Recommended Compression Rates, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Interposed abdominal compression (IAC)-CPR incorporates alternating chest and abdominal compressions to generate enhanced artificial circulation during cardiac arrest. The technique has been generally successful in improving blood flow and survival compared to standard CPR; however some questions remain. Objective: To determine "why does IAC-CPR produce more apparent benefit in some subjects than in others? and "what is the proper compression rate, given that there are actually two compressions (chest and abdomen) in each cycle?" Method: Computer models provide a means to search for subtle effects in complex systems. The present study employs a validated 12-compartment mathematical model of the human …

Gravity-Induced Birefringence Within The Framework Of Poincare Gauge Theory, O. Preuss, S. K. Solanki, M. P. Haugan, S. Jordan

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Gauge theories of gravity provide an elegant and promising extension of general relativity. In this paper we show that the Poincare gauge theory exhibits gravity-induced birefringence under the assumption of a specific gauge invariant nonminimal coupling between torsion and Maxwell's field. Furthermore we give for the first time an explicit expression for the induced phase shift between two orthogonal polarization modes within the Poincare framework. Since such a phase shift can lead to a depolarization of light emitted from an extended source this effect is, in principle, observable. We use white dwarf polarimetric data to constrain the essential coupling constant …

Guidelines For Data Collection Techniques And Methods For Roadside Station Origin-Destination Studies, Bryan P. Guy, Jon D. Fricker

JTRP Technical Reports

Origin-Destination studies are often used in transportation planning to determine the travel patterns (origin-destination matrix) of vehicles and goods in a particular area. Given these travel patterns, the impacts of alternative solutions to current and future transportation problems can be evaluated. Therefore, it is important that the travel patterns be accurately measured. However, it is not always clear what data collection method should be used to obtain the type of data needed, while maximizing quality and minimizing the time and cost. The objective of this research is to review both conventional and experimental techniques for roadside station OD studies, and …

JTRP Technical Reports

The occurrence of a strong earthquake in Indiana or neighboring states, as has occurred in the past, has serious implications for the State Transportation System with respect to adequate response. The definition of Earthquake Emergency Routes for the State of Indiana became a priority for the Indiana Department of Transportation. These Emergency Routes take into account various aspects related to transportation including coverage of population and area and travel time along these routes, and issues related to structural and geotechnical seismic vulnerability of the roads and bridges along these routes. Part I of the overall study report formulates a multi-commodity …
