Poverty Analysis Using An International Cross-Country Demand System, John Cranfield, Paul Preckel, Thomas Hertel Sep 2006

Poverty Analysis Using An International Cross-Country Demand System, John Cranfield, Paul Preckel, Thomas Hertel

GTAP Working Papers Archive

This paper proposes a new method for ex ante analysis of the poverty impacts arising from policy reforms. Three innovations underlie this approach. The first is the estimation of a global demand system using a combination of micro-data from household surveys, and macro-data from the International Comparisons Project. Estimation is undertaken in a manner that reconciles these two sources of information, explicitly recognizing that per capita national demands are an aggregation of the disaggregated, individual household demands. The second innovation relates to a methodology for post-estimation calibration of the global demand system, giving rise to country specific demand systems and …

Derrida's Deconstruction And The Rhetoric Of Proper Genres In Leonardo And Lessing, Shun-Liang Chao Sep 2006

Derrida's Deconstruction And The Rhetoric Of Proper Genres In Leonardo And Lessing, Shun-Liang Chao

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "Derrida's Deconstruction and the Rhetoric of Proper Genres in Leonardo and Lessing," Shun-liang Chao draws on Derrida's discourse of logocentrism to illuminate the "exorbitant" threads of metaphysical thought in Leonardo's and Lessing's texts on the comparison of poetry and painting. Both Leonardo and Lessing seek to subordinate one of the two sister arts to the other by constructing, respectively, the first, fixed principle of the proper genre and by drawing rigid borders between what is proper and what is improper. Leonardo privileges painting over poetry owing to the power of visiblity; on the other hand, Lessing subordinates …

Computerization Of Primary Care In The United States, James Anderson, E. Andrew Balas Jul 2006

Computerization Of Primary Care In The United States, James Anderson, E. Andrew Balas

RCHE Publications

The objective of this study was to assess the current level of information technology use by primary care ‎physicians in the U.S. Primary care physicians listed by the American Medical Association were contacted ‎by e-mail and asked to complete a Web-based questionnaire. A to¬tal of 2,145 physicians responded. ‎Overall, between 20% and 25% of primary care physicians reported using electronic medical records, e-‎prescribing, point-of-care decision support tools, and electronic communication with patients. This ‎indicates a slow rate of adoption since 2000. Differences in adoption rates suggest that future surveys need ‎to differentiate primary care and office-based physicians by specialty. An …

Ultrasensitive Mass Sensing Using Mode Localization In Coupled Microcantilevers, Matthew Spletzer, Arvind Raman, Alexander Q. Wu, Xianfan Xu, R. Reifenberger Jun 2006

Ultrasensitive Mass Sensing Using Mode Localization In Coupled Microcantilevers, Matthew Spletzer, Arvind Raman, Alexander Q. Wu, Xianfan Xu, R. Reifenberger

Birck and NCN Publications

We use Anderson or vibration localization in coupled microcantilevers as an extremely sensitive method to detect the added mass of a target analyte. We focus on the resonance frequencies and eigenstates of two nearly identical coupled gold-foil microcantilevers. Theoretical and experimental results indicate that the relative changes in the eigenstates due to the added mass can be orders of magnitude greater than the relative changes in resonance frequencies. Moreover this sensing paradigm possesses intrinsic common mode rejection characteristics thus providing an alternate way to achieve ultrasensitive mass detection under ambient conditions.

Identification Of Qtls Controlling Gene Expression Networks Defined A Priori., Daniel J. Kliebenstein, Marilyn Al West, Hans Van Leeuwen, Olivier Loudet, Rebecca W. Doerge, Dina A. St Clair Jun 2006

Identification Of Qtls Controlling Gene Expression Networks Defined A Priori., Daniel J. Kliebenstein, Marilyn Al West, Hans Van Leeuwen, Olivier Loudet, Rebecca W. Doerge, Dina A. St Clair

Department of Statistics Faculty Publications

Background

Gene expression microarrays allow the quantification of transcript accumulation for many or all genes in a genome. This technology has been utilized for a range of investigations, from assessments of gene regulation in response to genetic or environmental fluctuation to global expression QTL (eQTL) analyses of natural variation. Current analysis techniques facilitate the statistical querying of individual genes to evaluate the significance of a change in response, also known as differential expression. Since genes are also known to respond as groups due to their membership in networks, effective approaches are needed to investigate transcriptome variation as related to gene …

Low Frequency Variability In Globally Integrated Tropical Cyclone Power Dissipation, Ryan Sriver, Matthew Huber Jun 2006

Low Frequency Variability In Globally Integrated Tropical Cyclone Power Dissipation, Ryan Sriver, Matthew Huber

Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences Faculty Publications

Surface wind and temperature records from the European Centre for Medium- Range Weather Forecasts 40 Year Reanalysis (ERA-40) Project are used to estimate low-frequency variations in globally integrated tropical cyclone (TC) intensity from 1958 to 2001. For the first time, the annually integrated power dissipation (PD) is explicitly calculated on a global scale, and results show an upward trend in PD during much of the ERA-40 project period, although we argue this is at least partially due to limitations in cyclone representation in ERA-40. Comparing our estimated trend in PD with Emanuel's (2005) approximation to PD reveals good agreement after …

John Dewey’S Philosophy Of Education Is Alive And Well, Rebecca L. Carver, Richard P. Enfield Jun 2006

John Dewey’S Philosophy Of Education Is Alive And Well, Rebecca L. Carver, Richard P. Enfield

Education and Culture

Offering an introduction to both John Dewey’s philosophy of education and the 4-H Youth Development Program, this paper draws clear connections between these two topics. Concepts explored include Dewey’s principles of continuity and interaction, and contagion with respect to learning. Roles of educational leaders (including teachers) are investigated in the context of a discussion about the structuring of opportunities for students to develop habits of meaningful and life-long learning. Specific examples are described in depth to demonstrate, from a Deweyan perspective, the educational process and value of 4-H participation. Brief comments are made about the place of 4-H in the …

Judging Quality Of Human Achievement, Robin Barrow Jun 2006

Judging Quality Of Human Achievement, Robin Barrow

Education and Culture

This paper defends the commonsense view that judgments about the quality of human achievement in the arts can be true or false and shown to be so by objective reasoning, as against both subjectivist views and, more particularly, the view that they can be quantitatively expressed and scientifically demonstrated. It focuses on Charles Murray’s recent attempt to rank-order the great achievers in an objective manner, arguing that it is fundamentally flawed, especially in confusing the quantification of references with an argument for quality. Any attempt to justify a judgment relating to the quality of achievement must involve expertise in the …

A Comparative Analysis Of Website Expressions Of National Culture And Mediation, Paule Salerno-O'Shea Jun 2006

A Comparative Analysis Of Website Expressions Of National Culture And Mediation, Paule Salerno-O'Shea

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper, "A Comparative Analysis of Website Expressions of National Culture and Mediation," Paule Salerno-O'Shea identifies what the official websites of the National Ombudsman in Ireland and France reveal about mediation in those national cultures. The way both national mediators are portrayed indicates how mediation is represented at the national level: 1) these institutions were created by acts emanating from national representative assemblies; 2) the ombudspersons are nominated by representatives of the nation (in Ireland, the appointment is made by the president upon resolution passed by both Houses of the Oireachtas [Parliament] and in France by a presidential decree …

Affect, History, And Race And Ellison's Invisible Man, Alan Bourassa Jun 2006

Affect, History, And Race And Ellison's Invisible Man, Alan Bourassa

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Affect, History, and Race and Ellison's Invisible Man" Alan Bourassa explores the implications of the Deleuze and Guattarian concept of "affect" for a reading of Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man. In the novel's most problematic relationship -- that between race and history -- there is a third term that transforms the problematic. Invisible Man is simultaneously a conventional novel that establishes emotional individuality as the third term between history and race, and an "underground" novel that sets up "affect" as the third term. If Invisible Man is only about the emotional movements of the individual, race becomes merely …

The Reception And Translation Of Wordsworth In Japan, Waka Ishikura Jun 2006

The Reception And Translation Of Wordsworth In Japan, Waka Ishikura

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper, "The Reception and Translation of Wordsworth in Japan," Waka Ishikura explores the cultural dynamics involved in the understanding of Wordsworth in Japan since the late nineteenth century by examining the ways in which the Japanese encountered him in a broader historical context and the ways in which the development of language modernization in Japan affected the processes of reception and translation. Ishikura's investigation of the topic leads not only to an elucidation of the fate of the English poet in Japan but also to new insights into the ways in which literary or semiotic relations have influenced …

Embedding Research And Learning In Libraries., William R. Maes May 2006

Embedding Research And Learning In Libraries., William R. Maes

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The theme of this conference is “Embedding Libraries in Research and Learning.” While this is critical within the context of the new technologies and new service expectations of scholars and students it is also important that research and learning remain embedded in libraries if they are to be an integral part of the scholarly fabric of our institutions. With continuing economic pressures on scholarly institutions and the desire to use the new technologies to change established and expensive processes and facilities, the threat to the physical academic library has perhaps never been greater This paper discusses why the physical library …

The 3c3r Model: A Conceptual Framework For Designing Problems In Pbl, Woei Hung May 2006

The 3c3r Model: A Conceptual Framework For Designing Problems In Pbl, Woei Hung

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Well-designed problems are crucial for the success of problem-based learning (PBL). Previous discussions about designing problems for PBL have been rather general and inadequate in guiding educators and practitioners to design effective PBL problems. This paper introduces the 3C3R PBL problem design model as a conceptual framework for systematically designing optimal PBL problems. The 3C3R model comprises two classes of components: core components and processing components. Core components—including content, context, and connection—support content and conceptual learning, while processing components—consisting of researching, reasoning, and reflecting—concern students’ cognitive processes and problem-solving skills. This paper discusses the model in terms of its theoretical …

Goals And Strategies Of A Problem-Based Learning Facilitator, Cindy E. Hmelo-Silver, Howard S. Barrows May 2006

Goals And Strategies Of A Problem-Based Learning Facilitator, Cindy E. Hmelo-Silver, Howard S. Barrows

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

This paper describes an analysis of facilitation of a student-centered problem-based learning group. The focus of this analysis was to understand the goals and strategies of an expert facilitator in support of collaborative learning. This was accomplished through interaction analysis using video data and stimulated recall to examine two PBL group meetings. In this paper, we examine how specific strategies were used to support the PBL goals of helping students construct causal explanations, reason effectively, and become self-directed learners while maintaining a student-centered learning process. Being able to articulate these strategies is an important step in helping others learn the …

Jumping The Pbl Implementation Hurdle: Supporting The Efforts Of K–12 Teachers, Peggy A. Ertmer, Krista D. Simons

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

While problem-based learning (PBL) has a relatively long history of successful use in medical and pre-professional schools, it has yet to be widely adopted by K–12 teachers. This may be due, in part, to the numerous challenges teachers experience when implementing PBL. In this paper, we describe specific hurdles that teachers are likely to encounter during the implementation process and provide specific suggestions for supporting teachers’ classroom efforts. Implementation challenges relate to 1) creating a culture of collaboration and interdependence, 2) adjusting to changing roles, and 3) scaffolding student learning and performance. By supporting teachers’ initial and ongoing efforts, we …

Overview Of Problem-Based Learning: Definitions And Distinctions, John R. Savery May 2006

Overview Of Problem-Based Learning: Definitions And Distinctions, John R. Savery

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Problem-based learning (PBL) is an instructional approach that has been used successfully for over 30 years and continues to gain acceptance in multiple disciplines. It is an instructional (and curricular) learner-centered approach that empowers learners to conduct research, integrate theory and practice, and apply knowledge and skills to develop a viable solution to a defined problem. This overview presents a brief history, followed by a discussion of the similarities and differences between PBL and other experiential approaches to teaching, and identifies some of the challenges that lie ahead for PBL.

Designed To Deliver: Building A Digital Collection To Support Research., Ellen Derey Safley May 2006

Designed To Deliver: Building A Digital Collection To Support Research., Ellen Derey Safley

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

For a university created from a scientific research institute, the importance of its library was essential for providing faculty with current literature. Yet, scientific and technical resources are some of the most expensive materials acquired by libraries. The 1980s and early 1990s was a very lean financial period. By 1998, the combination of a fundamental change in budgeting for acquisitions, the advent of digital delivery of information, and the rise in consortial purchasing arrangements created a surprisingly robust library environment. Within a twelve year period, a library previously deemed woefully inadequate became an asset to scientists and engineers needing scholarly …
