Graph Theoretical Analysis Of The Dynamic Lines Of Collaboration Model For Disruption Response, Arfinandi Ferialdy
Graph Theoretical Analysis Of The Dynamic Lines Of Collaboration Model For Disruption Response, Arfinandi Ferialdy
Open Access Theses
The Dynamic Lines of Collaboration (DLOC) model was developed to address the Network-to-Network (N2N) service challenge found in e-Work networks with pervasive connectivity. A variant of the N2N service challenge found in emerging Cyber-Physical Infrastructures (CPI) networks is the collaborative disruption response (CDR) operation under cascading failures. The DLOC model has been validated as an appropriate modelling tool to aid the design of disruption responders in CPIs by eliciting the dynamic relation among the service team when handling service requests from clients in the CPI network.

Differences In Context: Revealing Expert-Novice Graph Knowledge In Biology, Mozhu Li
Open Access Theses
Graphs are typically defined as visual representations that depict and sometimes summarize quantitative data. Visual representation of quantitative data is broadly used in scientific textbooks, papers, and lectures as well as popular media seen in everyday life. Thus, understanding graphs and data became an essential skill for all students to master. However, correctly and fully using graphs requires a person to have multiple competencies (diSessa & Sherin, 2000). For an instance, during graph construction, variables need to be identified and characterized, data are screened and often reduced, and a graph type needs to be chosen that is appropriate for the …

Open Access Theses
This research is a study of the effectiveness of the mechanical, hydroponic and software components of a biowall that improves indoor air quality through plant assisted phytoremediation. The research investigates the ability of the device to sustain plant health in a controlled environment over an extended period. This is because, the biowall has intermittent airflow through it. This airflow, has a detrimental effect on the health of the plants in the biowall. After studying the horticultural and mechanical aspects needed to operate a biowall, appropriate control algorithms were developed. These algorithms controlled the biowall’s lights, irrigation, and fan.

A Micromechanical Fracture Model For Ductile-Brittle Interfaces, Dhrubajyoti Datta
A Micromechanical Fracture Model For Ductile-Brittle Interfaces, Dhrubajyoti Datta
Open Access Theses
The micromechanical properties of a bimaterial interface depend on the (i) bonded slip and friction parameters (ii) release of fracture energy during crack growth and (iii) propagation, residual energy and shape formulations defining the failure envelope. A non-empirical fracture model is proposed for a ductile-brittle bimaterial interface. Such interfaces occur in Steel-Concrete (SC) composite wall modules, which are building blocks of nuclear and containment facilities. Similar bimaterial interfaces can occur in geotechnical structures, aerospace, ceramics and other composite applications. The thesis identifies the primary microstructural failure modes associated with such interfaces. A controlled volume fracture model for adhesively bonded interfaces …

Most power generation in the United States is derived from the combustion of fossil fuels, primarily coal and natural gas. As a result, greenhouse gases (GHGs) are generated, and they act to trap radiant heat from the Earth. When GHGs are discussed, attention is usually concentrated on carbon dioxide (CO2) because it is believed to be the most manageable anthropogenic GHG. Therefore, introducing new technologies, primarily those which deal with CO2 capture and storage, is seen as a potential option for managing GHGs. Oil and gas reservoirs, saline formations, and un-mineable coal beds are examples of underground CO2 storage sites. …

Crystallization is an important separation and purification technique for a wide variety of solid products in pharmaceutical, food and fine chemical industries. The production of more than 90% of the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) involves crystallization. Therefore, it is crucial to design and control pharmaceutical crystallization processes so that the desired process requirement and product critical quality attributes (CQAs), including process yield, crystal purity, crystal size distribution (CSD), crystal shape and polymorphic form can be obtained. Studies about cooling or antisolvent only batch crystallization of pure APIs have been extensively reported in the literature in the last century. But design …
Developing Condition-Based Triggers For Bridge Deck Maintenance And Rehabilitation Treatments, Zhibo Zhang
Developing Condition-Based Triggers For Bridge Deck Maintenance And Rehabilitation Treatments, Zhibo Zhang
Open Access Dissertations
The bridges in the U.S. highway system suffer from deficiencies in both their structural condition and functionality. In an effort to improve the condition of bridges, highway agencies continually seek effective and efficient approaches to maintenance and rehabilitation (M&R) treatments for their bridges. However, one drawback to new approaches is that highway agencies have long relied on the subjective judgment of their engineers to determine the time or condition at which to implement the treatments as well as the types of treatments to be applied. The literature shows that previous researchers mainly focused on time-based M&R strategies, but there have …
Structural Elucidation Of Deprotonated Analytes Via Tandem Mass Spectrometry Based On Ion-Molecule Reactions And Collision-Activated Dissociation, Hanyu Zhu
Open Access Dissertations
Mass Spectrometry has emerged as a powerful analytical tool for the characterization of unknown molecules. Molecular weight information and chemical formulas of the unknowns can be derived by measuring the m/z value of the ionized analyte. In addition, structural information can be obtained via tandem mass spectrometry methods such as collision-activated dissociation (CAD). However, CAD does not always guarantee unambiguously assignment of chemical structures, therefore, additional tandem mass spectrometric methods such as ion-molecule reactions were developed.

Investigation Of Novel Displacement-Controlled Hydraulic Architectures For Railway Construction And Maintenance Machines, Damiano Padovani
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation aims at showing how to transform hydraulic systems of railway multi-actuator machinery characterized by inefficient state-of-the-art systems into the 21st Century. Designing machines that are highly efficient, productive, reliable, and cost affordable represents the target of this research. In this regard, migrating from valve-controlled architectures to displacement-controlled layouts is the proper answer. Displacement-controlled systems remove the losses generated by flow throttling typical of conventional circuits, allow an easy implementation of energy recovery (e.g. during regenerative braking), and create the possibility for the use of hybrid systems capable of maximizing the downsizing of the combustion engine. One portion of …

Approaching Dna Methylation At The Nanoscale, Yi Cui
Open Access Dissertations
Epigenetics involves a variety of biochemical modifications occurring on chromatin that are able to regulate and fine-tune genetic activities without altering the underlying DNA sequence. So far, four types of epigenetic modulation have been extensively studied: DNA methylation, histone post-translational modification, non-coding RNA, and nuclear organization. A fast-growing body of evidence suggests that epigenetic mechanism plays a fundamental role in physiology and pathology. Of the elucidated epigenetic processes, DNA methylation is the one under intense research due to its direct impact on gene expression, which dynamically bridges the microscale genotype and macroscale phenotype. However, to date our understanding of DNA …

As their dimensions are pushed into such unprecedented limits, their behavior is still captured using models that are decades old. Among many other proposed nanoscale devices, silicon vacuum electron devices are regaining attention due to their presumed advantages in operating at very high power, high speed and under harsh environment, where CMOS …
Significance Of Specific Force Models In Two Applications: Solar Sails To Sun-Earth L4/L5 And Grail Data Analysis Suggesting Lava Tubes And Buried Craters On The Moon, Rohan Sood
Open Access Dissertations
In the trajectory design process, gravitational interaction between the bodies of interest plays a key role in developing the over-arching force model. However, non-gravitational forces, such as solar radiation pressure (SRP), can significantly influence the motion of a spacecraft. Incorporating SRP within the dynamical model can assist in estimating the trajectory of a spacecraft with greater precision, in particular, for a spacecraft with a large area-to-mass ratio, i.e., solar sails. Subsequently, in the trajectory design process, solar radiation pressure can be leveraged to maneuver the sail-based spacecraft. First, to construct low energy transfers, the invariant manifolds are explored that form …

One of the many roles of university instructors is to provide help to students throughout the semester - especially in the form of feedback on homework. Personalized feedback from the instructor might be possible in a small classroom setting, but becomes unmanageable when class sizes grow to dozens or even hundreds of students. As a result, universities are turning to computerized homework systems that guide students through problems and provide focused grades and feedback.
