Stable Beginnings In Engineering Design, Mary E. Mccormick, David Hammer Jul 2016

Stable Beginnings In Engineering Design, Mary E. Mccormick, David Hammer

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Novel Engineering activities are premised on the integration of engineering and literacy: students identify and engineer solutions to problems that arise for fictional characters in stories they read for class. There are advantages to this integration, for both engineering and literacy goals of instruction: the stories provide ‘‘clients’’ to support students’ engagement in engineering, and understanding clients’ needs involves careful interpretation of text. Outcomes are encouraging, but mixed, in part owing to variation in how students frame the task. For instance, although students often pay close attention to the stories, interpreting and anticipating their fictional clients’ needs, they sometimes focus …

Reactive Flow Modeling Of Small Scale Detonation Failure Experiments For A Baseline Non-Ideal Explosive, David E. Kittell, Nick R. Cummock, Steven F. Son Jul 2016

Reactive Flow Modeling Of Small Scale Detonation Failure Experiments For A Baseline Non-Ideal Explosive, David E. Kittell, Nick R. Cummock, Steven F. Son

Purdue Energetics Research Center Articles

Small scale characterization experiments using only 1–5 g of a baseline ammonium nitrate plus fuel oil (ANFO) explosive are discussed and simulated using an ignition and growth reactive flow model. There exists a strong need for the small scale characterization of non-ideal explosives in order to adequately survey the wide parameter space in sample composition, density, and microstructure of these materials. However, it is largely unknown in the scientific community whether any useful or meaningful result may be obtained from detonation failure, and whether a minimum sample size or level of confinement exists for the experiments. In this work, it …

Response Of A Shell Structure Subject To Distributed Harmonic Excitation, Rui Cao, J Stuart Bolton Jul 2016

Response Of A Shell Structure Subject To Distributed Harmonic Excitation, Rui Cao, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

Previously, a coupled, two-dimensional structural-acoustic ring model was constructed to simulate the dynamic and acoustical behavior of pneumatic tires. Analytical forced solutions were obtained and were experimentally verified through laser velocimeter measurement made using automobile tires. However, the two-dimensional ring model is incapable of representing higher order, in-plane modal motion in either the circumferential or axial directions. Therefore, in this paper, a three-dimensional pressurized circular shell model is proposed to study the in-plane shearing motion and the effect of different forcing conditions. Closed form analytical solutions were obtained for both free and forced vibrations of the shell under simply supported …

Professional Development For The Integration Of Engineering In High School Stem Classrooms, Jonathan E. Singer, Julia M. Ross, Yvette Jackson-Lee

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in the U.S. is in transition. The recently published A Framework for K-12 Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas as well as the Next Generation Science Standards are responsive to this call and clearly articulate a vision that includes engineering practices as key components. This shift presents significant challenges to school districts owing to a stark lack of research-based engineering-focused instructional materials and corresponding teacher professional development. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of a professional development program on high school STEM teachers’ ability to enact design-based …

Between Paris And London: Contacts And Exchanges Of South American Artists In Europe (1950-1970), Maria De Fatima Morethy Couto Dr

Artl@s Bulletin

This paper calls attention to a network of artists, dealers, and critics from Europe and South America thanks to whom, from the 1950s to the early 1970s, Paris and London welcomed and fostered a certain form of South American avant-garde art. Accordingly, it discusses the European reception given to five South American artists active in Paris and London —Lygia Clark, Hélio Oiticica, Sérgio Camargo, Jesús Rafael Soto and Julio Le Parc—whose artistic practices were sometimes related to kineticism. It highlights the impact they had on the European art scene, as well as the role of several cultural agents who were …

Building Up Stem: An Analysis Of Teacher-Developed Engineering Design-Based Stem Integration Curricular Materials, Siddika Selcen Guzey, Tamara J. Moore, Michael Harwell

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Improving K–12 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education has a priority on numerous education reforms in the United States. To that end, developing and sustaining quality programs that focus on integrated STEM education is critical for educators. Successful implementation of any STEM program is related to the curriculum materials used. Educators increasingly recognize the challenge of finding quality curriculum materials for integrated STEM education. In this study, 48 teachers participated in a year-long professional development program on STEM integration, and they designed 20 new engineering design-based STEM curriculum units. Each STEM curriculum unit includes an engineering challenge in which …

How Engineering Standards Are Interpreted And Translated For Middle School, Eugene Judson, John Ernzen, Stephen Krause, James A. Middleton, Robert J. Culbertson Jun 2016

How Engineering Standards Are Interpreted And Translated For Middle School, Eugene Judson, John Ernzen, Stephen Krause, James A. Middleton, Robert J. Culbertson

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

In this exploratory study we examined the alignment of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) middle school engineering design standards with lesson ideas from middle school teachers, science education faculty, and engineering faculty (4–6 members per group). Respondents were prompted to provide plain language interpretations of two middle school Engineering Design performance expectations and to provide examples of how the performance expectations could be applied in middle school classrooms. Participants indicated the challenges and benefits of implementing these performance expectations and indicated personal experiences that helped them to interpret the performance expectations.

Quality of lessons differed depending on the performance expectation …

Ethical Principles And School Challenges: A Deweyan Analysis, Douglas J. Simpson, Donal M. Sacken Jun 2016

Ethical Principles And School Challenges: A Deweyan Analysis, Douglas J. Simpson, Donal M. Sacken

Education and Culture

In this study, we examine Dewey’s understanding of ethical principles by identifying a number of his primary emphases, including how he thought principles may be reconstructed and employed in schools. We do this by (a) explicating how he understood the reconstruction of general, universal, and absolute ethical claims; (b) anticipating how some detractors of his view of practical certainty may question its serviceability; and (c) demonstrating how his ideas may be employed to address a problematic high school situation. In addition, we episodically embed in these primary emphases thoughts about how ethical principles play a part in Dewey’s more comprehensive …

Democracy And The Industrial Imagination In American Education, Steven Fesmire Jun 2016

Democracy And The Industrial Imagination In American Education, Steven Fesmire

Education and Culture

Educational politics in the United States is entangled in the notion that the foremost mission of education is, in the infamous words of Gov. Scott Walker’s proposed revision of the University of Wisconsin’s mission, “to develop human resources to meet the state’s workforce needs.” This general outlook is not an outlier. It is typical of those who approach education primarily as a way to fuel industry with skilled labor. This outlook is premised on an increasingly dominant educational model that is miseducative, antidemocratic, and incompatible with values of mutual respect and individual dignity. It is helpful to analyze the industrial …

Estimation Of Performance Airspeeds For High-Bypass Turbofans Equipped Transport-Category Airplanes, Nihad E. Daidzic Jun 2016

Estimation Of Performance Airspeeds For High-Bypass Turbofans Equipped Transport-Category Airplanes, Nihad E. Daidzic

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Conventional Mach-independent subsonic drag polar does not replicate the real airplane drag characteristics exactly and especially not in the drag-divergence region due to shock-induced transonic wave drag. High-bypass turbofan thrust is a complicated function of many parameters that eludes accurate predictions for the entire operating envelope and must be experimentally verified. Fuel laws are also complicated functions of many parameters which make optimization and economic analysis difficult and uncertain in the conceptual design phase. Nevertheless, mathematical models and predictions have its important place in aircraft development, design, and optimization. In this work, airspeed-dependent turbofan thrust and the new fuel-law model …

Corrosion-Induced Concrete Cracking Model Considering Corrosion-Filled Paste, Jianfeng Dong, Yuxi Zhao, Yingyao Wu, Weiliang Jin Jun 2016

Corrosion-Induced Concrete Cracking Model Considering Corrosion-Filled Paste, Jianfeng Dong, Yuxi Zhao, Yingyao Wu, Weiliang Jin

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

A TCP–TCL model is established to describe the relationship between the thickness of the corrosion-filled paste (CP) and that of the corrosion layer (CL). This model can describe the phenomenon that the corrosion filling in the concrete pores and accumulating at the steel/concrete interface occur synchronously. Based on the TCP–TCL model, a corrosion-induced concrete cracking model, which can quantitatively consider corrosion-filled paste at concrete/steel interface, is proposed. Combined with damage analysis in corrosion-induced cracking process of concrete cover, the model is developed to describe the quantity of steel corrosion required to crack …

Designing Repeatable Self-Healing Into Cementitious Materials, Mo Li, Shuai Fan Jun 2016

Designing Repeatable Self-Healing Into Cementitious Materials, Mo Li, Shuai Fan

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

Designing self-healing into cementitious materials can open a new world of opportunities for resilient concrete infrastructure under service loading conditions. The self-healing process should be robust as well as repeatable, allowing for self-repair after multiple damage events. The repeatability poses great challenges when self-healing strategies mainly rely on the formation of low-strength calcium carbonate healing product, complicated by the localized cracking behavior of cementitious materials. This study aims at formulating a new cementitious material system with designed physical and chemical characteristics that favour repeatable self-healing. Advanced experimental methods, coupled with micromechanics theory, are adopted to probe and design repeatable self-healing …

Effect Of Fractal Dimension Of Fine Aggregates On The Concrete Chloride Resistance, Wen Xue, J. Chen Jun 2016

Effect Of Fractal Dimension Of Fine Aggregates On The Concrete Chloride Resistance, Wen Xue, J. Chen

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

The relationship between fractal dimension of fine aggregates and the chloride resistance of concrete was investigated in this study. Both concrete and mortar specimens were cast. Concrete specimens were in the same mix design as the mortar specimens except for the coarse aggregates. The specimens were divided into different groups based on the gradation of the fine aggregates. The chloride resistances of concrete specimens were tested by using the rapid chloride migration method. The results indicate that high volume fractal dimensions of fine aggregates have positive impacts on the chloride resistance of concrete. The simplified calculating formulas were proposed.

Edge Detection Of Concrete Mesostructure Based On Dis Operator, Bin Feng, Zicheng Xu, Jin Xia, Shijie Jin, Weiliang Jin

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

Aggregate edge detection is the basis of creating concrete mesoscale model, which is applied to analyze concrete mesoscale characteristics. A concrete digital image edge detection method using DIS operator is presented in this paper. Mean filter, multi-scale filter, and Gaussian filter are compared on the effect of concrete image noise reduction. Based on the result, Gaussian filter is the most optimum method to reduce image noise and remain aggregate edge distinct. Sobel operator, Laplacian operator, and DIS operator are applied respectively to detect the aggregate edge on Gaussian filter processed images. Based on the experiment, DIS operator outperforms other two …

An Investigation Of Degradation Of Mechanical Behaviour Of Prestressing Strands Subjected To Chloride Attacking, Zhao-Hui Lu, Fan Li, Yan-Gang Zhao Jun 2016

An Investigation Of Degradation Of Mechanical Behaviour Of Prestressing Strands Subjected To Chloride Attacking, Zhao-Hui Lu, Fan Li, Yan-Gang Zhao

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

Corrosion of reinforcing and prestressing steel due to chloride contamination is one of the primary causes of deterioration of concrete structures. A review of published literatures shows that the research on the deterioration of mechanical properties of reinforcing steel is more than that on prestressing strands, even though the corrosion of prestressing strands may trigger structural collapse without warnings due to higher stress levels in the steel. This paper aims to investigate the degradation of mechanical behaviour of corroded prestressing strands. Details of a comprehensive experiment designed to examine the mechanical behaviour of corroded prestressing strands in concrete structural members …

Empirical Research And Practice-Oriented Physics For The Humanities And Sciences, István Berszán Jun 2016

Empirical Research And Practice-Oriented Physics For The Humanities And Sciences, István Berszán

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Empirical Research and Practice-oriented Physics for the Humanities and Sciences" István Berszán proposes an empirical approach for the humanities and sciences he designates as "practice-oriented physics." He bases his argumentation on Albert-László Barabási's network theory applied and question tenets of complexity, networks, and spaces. Further, Berszán elaborates on the affinity between the spaces of practical orientation and the spaciousness of parallel worlds as explicated in Brian Green's string theory. Berszán posits that because the universe as "symphony" of string oscillations leads to parallel rhythms of happenings and their different spaces of motion and argues that this kind …

Development And A Validation Of A Charge Sensitive Organic Rankine Cycle (Orc) Simulation Tool, Davide Ziviani, Brandon J. Woodland, Emeline Georges, Eckhard A. Groll, James E. Braun, Travis Horton, Martijn Broek, Michel De Paepe May 2016

Development And A Validation Of A Charge Sensitive Organic Rankine Cycle (Orc) Simulation Tool, Davide Ziviani, Brandon J. Woodland, Emeline Georges, Eckhard A. Groll, James E. Braun, Travis Horton, Martijn Broek, Michel De Paepe

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Despite the increasing interest in organic Rankine cycle (ORC) systems and the large number of cycle models proposed in the literature, charge-based ORC models are still almost absent. In this paper, a detailed overall ORC simulation model is presented based on two solution strategies: condenser subcooling and total working fluid charge of the system. The latter allows the subcooling level to be predicted rather than specified as an input. The overall cycle model is composed of independent models for pump, expander, line sets, liquid receiver and heat exchangers. Empirical and semi-empirical models are adopted for the pump and expander, respectively. …
