A Framework For Problem-Based Learning: Teaching Mathematics With A Relational Problem-Based Pedagogy, Carmel Schettino
A Framework For Problem-Based Learning: Teaching Mathematics With A Relational Problem-Based Pedagogy, Carmel Schettino
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
One recommendation for encouraging young women and other underrepresented students in their mathematical studies is to find instructional methods, such as problem-based learning (PBL), that allow them to feel included in the learning process. Using a more relationally centered pedagogy along with more inclusive instructional methods may be a way to foster an interest in studying mathematics in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. However, many mathematics teachers are at a loss in not only how to instruct with PBL methods but also how to create the environment that encourages optimal learning.
Detangling The Interrelationships Between Self-Regulation And Ill-Structured Problem Solving In Problem-Based Learning, Xun Ge, Victor Law, Kun Huang
Detangling The Interrelationships Between Self-Regulation And Ill-Structured Problem Solving In Problem-Based Learning, Xun Ge, Victor Law, Kun Huang
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
One of the goals for problem-based learning (PBL) is to promote self-regulation. Although self-regulation has been studied extensively, its interrelationships with ill-structured problem solving have been unclear. In order to clarify the interrelationships, this article proposes a conceptual framework illustrating the iterative processes among problem-solving stages (i.e., problem representation and solution generation) and self-regulation phases (i.e., planning, execution, and reflection). The dynamics of the interrelationships are further illustrated with three ill-structured problem-solving examples in different domains (i.e., information problem solving, historical inquiry, and science inquiry). The proposed framework contributes to research and practice by providing a new lens to examine …
Facilitating Problem Framing In Project-Based Learning, Vanessa Svihla, Richard Reeve
Facilitating Problem Framing In Project-Based Learning, Vanessa Svihla, Richard Reeve
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
While problem solving is a relatively well understood process, problem framing is less well understood, particularly with regard to supporting students to learn as they frame problems. Project-based learning classrooms are an ideal setting to investigate how teachers facilitate this process. Using participant observation, this study investigated how teachers supported students in taking ownership over the framing of problems in a charter school that serves students who have been underserved by traditional schooling. Data include audio/video records, field notes, interviews, and student work from a nineweek project. Interaction analysis was used to examine ownership and learning over time. Analysis suggests …

Development Of A Mathematical Model To Estimate Intra-Tumor Oxygen Concentrations Through Multi-Parametric Imaging, Chung-Wein Lee, Keith Stantz, Phd
School of Health Sciences Faculty Publications
Background
Tumor hypoxia is involved in every stage of solid tumor development: formation, progression, metastasis, and apoptosis. Two types of hypoxia exist in tumors—chronic hypoxia and acute hypoxia. Recent studies indicate that the regional hypoxia kinetics is closely linked to metastasis and therapeutic responses, but regional hypoxia kinetics is hard to measure. We propose a novel approach to determine the local pO2 by fusing the parameters obtained from in vivo functional imaging through the use of a modified multivariate Krogh model.
Methods
To test our idea and its potential to translate into an in vivo setting through the use of …

Synthesis And Characterization Of A Series Of Uranium(Iv) Species: Investigating Coordination With A Redox Innocent Triamine Ligand, Selena L. Staun
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Investigation of uranium(IV) complexes chelated by a tridentate amine, H3RITA (H3RITA = (MesNHCH2CH2)2NH, Mes = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl), has afforded novel new compounds with the potential for small molecule activation. Deprotonation of H3RITA with two equivalents of benzyl potassium affords K2HRITA, which upon reaction with uranium tetrachloride forms (THF)2UCl2(HRITA) (THF = tetrahydrofuran). The labile THF molecules are easily substituted for triphenylphosphine oxide (OPPh3), a much stronger ligand, forming (Ph3PO)UCl2(HRITA). Installation of a cyclopentadienyl ligand, Cp* (Cp* = 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl), was achieved …
Predicting Surface Temperatures Of Roads: Utilizing A Decaying Average In Forecasting, Peter Boyd, Weston Phillips
Predicting Surface Temperatures Of Roads: Utilizing A Decaying Average In Forecasting, Peter Boyd, Weston Phillips
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
While being aware of the air temperature during the winter months is very important, many overlook the importance of the road temperature. Knowing the temperature of the road helps transportation departments decide whether or not salt will need to be distributed onto the road, as well as what type of salt. This research was conducted in order to better a forecast model on surface temperature predictions that was shown to be inaccurate. Data was used from the 2013–2014 winter from three cities across Indiana. The data included variables such as air and surface temperatures, precipitation, wind speed, and other variables …

Resettlement Struggles Of Burmese Refugee Students In U.S. High Schools: A Qualitative Study, Madhavi Tandon Dr.
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
This article presents findings from a qualitative study that examined how five Burmese refugee students adjusted and navigated two public school high schools in a Midwestern urban city in the U.S. The purpose of the study was to capture their unique histories and migration stories from which they drew strength as they resettled in the U.S. The present study focused specifically on the barriers faced by them in achieving high school graduation and impediments to higher education. Important findings included lack of navigational capital, linguicism and the intense shame of being a multilingual learner, birth order, and poor health. Other …

Low-cost Unmanned Airborne Vehicles (UAVs) equipped with consumer-grade imaging systems have emerged as a potential remote sensing platform that could satisfy the needs of a wide range of civilian applications. Among these applications, UAV-based agricultural mapping and monitoring have attracted significant attention from both the research and professional communities. The interest in UAV-based remote sensing for agricultural management is motivated by the need to maximize crop yield. Remote sensing-based crop yield prediction and estimation are primarily based on imaging systems with different spectral coverage and resolution (e.g., RGB and hyperspectral imaging systems). Due to the data volume, RGB imaging is …
Pushing And Pulling Sara: A Case Study Of The Contrasting Influences Of High School And University Experiences On Engineering Agency, Identity, And Participation, Allison Godwin, Geoff Potvin
Pushing And Pulling Sara: A Case Study Of The Contrasting Influences Of High School And University Experiences On Engineering Agency, Identity, And Participation, Allison Godwin, Geoff Potvin
School of Engineering Education Faculty Publications
This manuscript reports on a longitudinal case study of how one woman, Sara, who had previously considered dropping out of high school authored strong mathematics and science identities and purposefully exhibited agency through her experiences in high school science. These experiences empowered her to choose an engineering major in college; however, her introductory university engineering experiences ultimately pushed her out of engineering. Drawing on critical agency theory, we argue that by paying careful attention to how and why women author their identities and build agency through their experiences in high school, we may gain insight into why women may choose …

Fracture of crystals and frictional heating are associated with the formation of “hot spots” (localized heating) in energetic composites such as polymer bonded explosives (PBXs). Traditional high speed optical imaging methods cannot be used to study the dynamic sub-surface deformation and the fracture behavior of such materials due to their opaque nature. In this study, high speed synchrotron X-ray experiments are conducted to visualize the in situ deformation and the fracture mechanisms in PBXs composed of octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX) crystals and hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene binder doped with iron (III) oxide. A modified Kolsky bar apparatus was used to apply controlled dynamic compression …

Self-Efficacy As A Long-Term Outcome Of A General Education Course On Digital Technologies, Renata A. Revelo, Christopher Schmitz, Duyen Le, Michael C. Loui
School of Engineering Education Faculty Publications
This study investigates the long-term outcomes of a general education course on digital technologies. Through cross-sectional and longitudinal interviews with students, the authors find that self-efficacy is a long-term student outcome. The primary sources of self-efficacy in the course for students were verbal persuasion and mastery experience. Faculty and teaching assistants were key sources for verbal persuasion. Some students experienced a success paradox: they felt successful in the course even though they failed to meet all of their initial expectations. This study can guide faculty in designing a course to promote student self-efficacy.
