Understanding The Stem Skills Gap: A Regional Perspective, Charles R. Bomar, Shelley Lee, Leroy Lee

Polytechnic Institute Summit

Short Abstract:

Considerable discussion with regional stakeholders has occurred around the concept of a STEM skill gap. A reoccurring theme with regional employers seem frustrated that skills necessary for the workplace are not adequately provided in K-12 or higher education. We assembled a team to evaluate two aspects of the perceived gap. First we surveyed ten regional stakeholders to articulate their interpretation of the skills gap and perceived solutions. Secondly we reviewed (46 area school districts) standardized test scores (ACT Science and Math) and benchmarked regional scores relative to state and national standards; post high school graduation plans; high school …

Developing Teacher Competencies For Problem-Based Learning Pedagogy And For Supporting Learning In Language-Minority Students, Peter Rillero, Mari Koerner, Margarita Jimenez-Silva, Joi Merritt, Wendy J. Farr

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Teachers need to be able to design and implement problem-based learning (PBL) experiences to help students master the content and the processes in new mathematics and science education standards. Due to the changed population of learners within schools, it is also critically important that teachers in the elementary grades have the abilities to work effectively with English language learners (ELL). This article discusses the implementation of a major initiative by our teachers college to achieve both of these goals through Problem-Based Enhanced Language Learning (PBELL), which combines PBL, enhanced opportunities for language, and ELL methods. The implementation began with a …

Memory And Identity-Focused Narratives In Tănase's 'Lived Book', Nicoleta D. Ifrim Jun 2017

Memory And Identity-Focused Narratives In Tănase's 'Lived Book', Nicoleta D. Ifrim

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Memory and identity-focused narratives in Tănase's 'lived book'" Nicoleta Ifrim analyses România mea (My Romania), Virgil Tănase's first book published after the fall of Ceausescu's regime, a collection of interviews in which personal history is fictionalized according to the narrative rules of a "spoken book." The text is representative for the Eastern intellectual travelling to the West, carrying out his own personal post-totalitarian traumas now mirrored in a self-oriented narrative.

Main Campus And Remote Campus Engineering Technology Students: How Are They Different?, Anne M. Lucietto, Sarah E. Leach Jun 2017

Main Campus And Remote Campus Engineering Technology Students: How Are They Different?, Anne M. Lucietto, Sarah E. Leach

School of Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

Engineering Technology students are underrepresented as compared to other Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) majors. In particular, they are a very small, often neglected population of which little is known to those outside their field of study. One large Midwestern University is studying their engineering technology student population to further understand how best to serve these students. The intent is to improve student services, learning opportunities, and environments with a goal of improving student skills and knowledge. The ultimate objective is to send them into the workplace more fully prepared for the challenges they will encounter. Due to the …

Engineering Technology Students - How Do They Compare To Other Stem Students?, Anne M. Lucietto Jun 2017

Engineering Technology Students - How Do They Compare To Other Stem Students?, Anne M. Lucietto

School of Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

For many years, students interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) majors were easily identified. However, since the realization that the US has a low number of students enrolled in STEM programs, great effort has been expended to encourage youth to pursue careers in these areas. Because of these broad-based efforts, the demographics of students moving into STEM are different from those in the past. There is a noted lack of diversity in students majoring in engineering technology; this is not as prevalent in other STEM fields.

Engineering technology students belong to a unique group. They are formally trained …

Understanding Young Students' Problem Solving Pathways: Building A Design Process Model Based On Sequential Analysis, Euisuk Sung, Todd R. Kelley Jun 2017

Understanding Young Students' Problem Solving Pathways: Building A Design Process Model Based On Sequential Analysis, Euisuk Sung, Todd R. Kelley

Technology Leadership and Innovation Faculty Publications

Many STEM-related K-12 education standards, such as the Next Generation Science Standards, Standards for Technological Literacy, and Common Core Mathematics Standards, place great emphasis on designing as a way of delivering their core concepts. However, the classroom delivery of core design concepts has been the focus of very few studies. Particularly, most design-based lessons use a design process model, which poses a challenge for many engineering and technology educators. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the actual process of engineering design using the sequential pattern analysis method. The researchers collected ten Concurrent Think-Aloud (CTA) protocols from fourth …

Wilderness Courage Scale (Wcs), Piotr Prochniak May 2017

Wilderness Courage Scale (Wcs), Piotr Prochniak

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

This article presents a new tool—the Wilderness Courage Scale. The Wilderness Courage Scale is a scale that diagnoses undertaking activity in dangerous natural environments, despite personal fears. The validity of the Wilderness Courage Scale was tested using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. The results of factor analyses verified the one-factor structure. The questionnaire’s internal consistency and intercorrelations were also tested. The Wilderness Courage Scale correlates with sensation seeking, some personality traits, and coping forms. The author discusses the findings in regard to the Wilderness Courage Scale as an instrument to measure exploration of dangerous natural environments. However, further studies need …

Datasets On The Genomic Positions Of The Mll1 Morphemes, The Zfp57 Binding Site, And Zfbs-Morph Overlaps In The Build Mm9 Of The Mouse Genome, Minou Bina, Phillip Wyss, Xiaohui C. Song May 2017

Datasets On The Genomic Positions Of The Mll1 Morphemes, The Zfp57 Binding Site, And Zfbs-Morph Overlaps In The Build Mm9 Of The Mouse Genome, Minou Bina, Phillip Wyss, Xiaohui C. Song

Department of Chemistry Faculty Publications

While MLL1 activates gene expression in most tissues, ZFP57 represses transcription. MLL1 selectively interacts with a group of nonmethylated DNA sequences known as the MLL1 morphemes. ZFP57 associates with a methylated hexamer (ZFBS), dispersed in the genomic DNA segments known as Imprinted Control Regions (ICRs) and germline Differentially Methylated Regions (gDMRs), to maintain allele-specific gene repression. We have identified a set of composite DNA elements (ZFBS-Morph overlaps) that provides the sequence context of ZFBS in the canonical ICRs/gDMRs. This report provides tables listing the nucleotide sequences of the MLL1 morphemes and ZFBS-Morph overlaps. The report also offers links to the …

Can Cone Signals In The Wild Be Predicted From The Past?, David H. Foster, Iván Marín-Franch May 2017

Can Cone Signals In The Wild Be Predicted From The Past?, David H. Foster, Iván Marín-Franch

MODVIS Workshop

In the natural world, the past is usually a good guide to the future. If light from the sun and sky is blue earlier in the day and yellow now, then it is likely to be more yellow later, as the sun's elevation decreases. But is the light reflected from a scene into the eye as predictable as the light incident upon the scene, especially when lighting changes are not just spectral but include changes in local shadows and mutual reflections? The aim of this work was to test the predictability of cone photoreceptor signals in the wild over the …
