We’Re On A Roll: Transforming E-Book Acquisitions In A Shifting Budget Landscape, Sheldon D. Armstrong, Ellen E. George, Arielle R. Lomness, Sally J. Taylor

Charleston Library Conference

In response to the challenging budget landscape in 2015–2016, the University of British Columbia Library took a new approach to e-book acquisitions. The Associate University Librarian, Collections, established a working group with a mandate to develop and implement a strategy for library-wide e-book purchasing. Members of the group were drawn from both campuses and represented public and technical services and a broad spectrum of disciplines. In this presentation, we will briefly review the factors that led to the formation of the working group, then discuss the steps taken in the analysis, selection, and purchase of e-books. The committee’s two-pronged approach—the …

Dda Management With Predictive Modeling, John Vickery Oct 2017

Dda Management With Predictive Modeling, John Vickery

Charleston Library Conference

Demand-driven acquisitions (DDA) programs have become an integral part of academic libraries’ collecting strategies. While DDA programs provide an effective way to build a just-in-time collection, it can be difficult to anticipate how many titles will be triggered for purchase and what the financial impact will be. This presentation will describe a project to build a predictive model to flag DDA titles that are likely to be triggered for purchase within the first year of being added to the catalog. By implementing a predictive model, collections and acquisitions departments can better plan the yearly DDA budget. In addition, titles with …

The Librarian’S Survival Guide To The “Big Deal”: Tools For Unbundling, Samuel Cassady, Doug Lynch, Leanne Olson, Alie Visser Oct 2017

The Librarian’S Survival Guide To The “Big Deal”: Tools For Unbundling, Samuel Cassady, Doug Lynch, Leanne Olson, Alie Visser

Charleston Library Conference

At Western University, like many other schools, journal package “big deals” (large, bundled collections of ejournals from the same publisher, purchased at a discount) have been seen as beneficial to the collection based on high discounts and low cost per use. When the Canadian loonie fell to 67 cents on the U.S. dollar in January 2016, it created unexpected financial challenges for collections management. We now had to consider new ways to find cost savings by canceling or unbundling resources, and big deals became a potential target. In evaluating these packages, we looked beyond cost per use, building on work …

Book Usage Is Rollin’ Down: Multifaceted Assessment Of Monograph Collection Performance To Optimize Purchase Decisions, Tricia L. Clayton, Skye C. Hardesty Oct 2017

Book Usage Is Rollin’ Down: Multifaceted Assessment Of Monograph Collection Performance To Optimize Purchase Decisions, Tricia L. Clayton, Skye C. Hardesty

Charleston Library Conference

Georgia State University’s print circulation has declined over 50% since 2010. Collection development librarians made several small-scale adjustments to address this trend, yet the drop off in use continued unabated. We had to totally rethink the book budget. To make changes strategically and responsibly, we needed answers to a variety of questions: Are there disciplines that do not need firm order allocations or even monographs? Does format matter? Does it matter how the titles are acquired with regard to approval versus firm order versus demand-driven acquisition (DDA)?

This paper discusses the multifaceted data-driven analysis we developed in order to provide …

Christ Our Center: Joseph Ratzinger’S Witness, Edward T. Oakes Oct 2017

Christ Our Center: Joseph Ratzinger’S Witness, Edward T. Oakes

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

The author first traces the rise of today’s postmodernism from nineteenth-century relativism, both of which reject claims to the possession of an absolute and universal truth. They see such a claim as an imposition of one’s own limited perspective on others. This phenomenon rules out Christ as the center of history. He then notes that for him ecumenism is not just for unity in the church but for a united claim to the centrality and lordship of Christ over the universe. He pursues this line of thought through the Christology of Cardinal Ratzinger before he became Pope Benedict XVI. He …

Online Digital Exhibit With The Tippecanoe County Historical Association, Kathryn Math, Jinghong Zhu, Rajan Dalal

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

We fi rst came into contact with the Tippecanoe County Historical Association (TCHA) through the fall 2016 honors course “Digital Histories,” led by Dr. Jennifer Bay. Our course project was to create a digital exhibition for the TCHA with a service-learning grant provided by Purdue University. In this collaboration, we were able to put into practice the theories and processes we learned in the classroom and gain both a working knowledge of archival techniques and an understanding of the relationship between the institution and the community. The exhibit “Planting Our Roots: The Immigrant Experience in Tippecanoe County” is the result …

Everyone Is An Academic English Learner: Interactive Support In Mainstream Classrooms, Kyongson Park Oct 2017

Everyone Is An Academic English Learner: Interactive Support In Mainstream Classrooms, Kyongson Park

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

This article is a report on an English language learner (ELL) teacher’s mainstream class observations, coteaching experiences with a local language arts teacher, and surveying with students for a semester. As Short and Echevarria (2016, p. 2) state, “academic language is a second language for all students,” and every student is an academic English learner. This study examines how teachers bridge the gap between theory and practice by taking on multiple roles in classrooms and providing diverse support (Gottlieb, 2015). The implemented project focused on creating an autobiographical book with students themselves as centerpieces. The main purpose was to provide …

Latinx And Caucasian Elementary School Children’S Knowledge Of And Interest In Engineering Activities, Gamze Ozogul, Cindy Faith Miller, Martin Reisslein

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Ethnic minorities, such as Latinx people of Hispanic or Latino origin, and women earn fewer engineering degrees than Caucasians and men. With shifting population dynamics and high demands for a technically qualified workforce, it is important to achieve broad participation in the engineering workforce by all ethnicities and both genders. Previous research has examined the knowledge of and interest in engineering among students in grades five and higher. In contrast, the present study examined elementary school students in grades K–5. The study found that older students in grades 4 and 5 had both greater knowledge of engineering occupational activities and …

Visual Analytics Evaluation Based On Judgment Analysis Theory, Mosab Khayat, Arif Ghafoor Oct 2017

Visual Analytics Evaluation Based On Judgment Analysis Theory, Mosab Khayat, Arif Ghafoor

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this paper we propose a framework to quantitatively evaluate user awareness and the level of support that visual analytics decision support systems (VADS) provide. For the framework, which has a theoretical underpinning from the field of judgement analysis, we propose a model for VADS system. The framework bridges the gap between judgment analysis and VADS evaluation by conceptually connecting judgment analysis concepts to visual analytic. The proposed approach offers an insights based evaluation to measure the importance and the utility of the insights. We propose to model insights and user findings as random variables that parametrize user decisions. The …

Design Of Dc-Link Vscf Ac Electrical Power System For The Embraer 190/195 Aircraft, Eduardo Francis Carvalho Freitas, Nihad E. Daidzic Sep 2017

Design Of Dc-Link Vscf Ac Electrical Power System For The Embraer 190/195 Aircraft, Eduardo Francis Carvalho Freitas, Nihad E. Daidzic

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

A proposed novel DC-Link VSCF AC-DC-AC electrical power system converter for Embraer 190/195 transport category airplane is presented. The proposed converter could replace the existing conventional system based on the CSCF IDGs. Several contemporary production airplanes already have VSCF as a major or backup source of electrical power. Problems existed with the older VSCF systems in the past; however, the switched power electronics and digital controllers have matured and can be now, in our opinion, safely integrated and replace existing constant-speed hydraulic transmissions powering CSCF AC generators. IGBT power transistors for medium-level power conversion and relatively fast efficient switching are …

Approaches To Integrating Engineering In Stem Units And Student Achievement Gains, Elizabeth A. Crotty, Selcen S. Guzey, Gillian H. Roehrig, Aran W. Glancy, Elizabeth A. Ring-Whalen, Tamara J. Moore

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

This study examined different approaches to integrating engineering practices in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) curriculum units. These various approaches were correlated with student outcomes on engineering assessment items. There are numerous reform documents in the USA and around the world that emphasize the need to incorporate engineering into science education. The authors of this study contend that different approaches to integrating engineering in STEM units correlate to larger student achievement gains in engineering, based on assessment items developed from the Framework for Quality K–12 Engineering Education (Moore, Glancy, Tank, Kersten, & Smith, 2014). The goal of this work …

New Fractals For Computer Generated Art Created By Iteration Of Polynomial Functions Of A Complex Variable, Charles F. Babbs Sep 2017

New Fractals For Computer Generated Art Created By Iteration Of Polynomial Functions Of A Complex Variable, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers

Novel fractal forms can be created by iteration of higher order polynomials of the complex variable, z, with both positive and negative exponents, followed by optional integer power transformation, k zz . Such functions lead to an expanded universe of fascinating fractal patterns that can be incorporated into computer generated art.

Generalized Fractals For Computer Generated Art: Preliminary Results, Charles F. Babbs Sep 2017

Generalized Fractals For Computer Generated Art: Preliminary Results, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers

This paper explores new types of fractals created by iteration of the functions xn+1 = f1(xn, yn) and yn+1 = f2(xn, yn) in a general plane, rather than in the complex plane. Iteration of such functions generates orbits with novel fractal patterns. Especially interesting are N-th order polynomials, raised to a positive or negative integer power, p.

Such functions create novel fractal patterns, including budding, spiked, striped, dragon head, and bat-like forms. The present faculty working paper shows how to create a rich variety of complex and fascinating fractals using this generalized approach, which is accessible to students with high …

Curricular Requirements, Critical Traditions, And Adaptation In The Paratext Of Chinese And American School Editions Of Robinson Crusoe, Haifeng Hui Sep 2017

Curricular Requirements, Critical Traditions, And Adaptation In The Paratext Of Chinese And American School Editions Of Robinson Crusoe, Haifeng Hui

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Curricular Requirements, Critical Traditions, and Adaptation in the Paratext of Chinese and American School Editions of Robinson Crusoe" Haifeng Hui analyses a Chinese new curricular edition and an American common core edition of Defoe's Robinson Crusoe to reveal how the paratext can be utilized to reveal different ways of understanding in different educational cultures. He argues that the paratext powerfully exerts the publisher's authority over the text and the reader, thus shaping readers' interpretation of the story in the service of fulfilling specific national curricular needs. The Chinese edition aims more at how Crusoe's story should …

Spatial Soundscape Ecology: Application In A Paleotropical Rainforest, Jack Vanschaik Aug 2017

Spatial Soundscape Ecology: Application In A Paleotropical Rainforest, Jack Vanschaik

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

The world’s biodiversity is declining with much of the decrease attributed to human activity. The paleotropical rainforests of Borneo contribute 10% of the world biodiversity but are at risk of destruction due to logging and other human interests. Soundscape ecology, defi ned as the study of the composition of sounds in an environment, is a new fi eld that offers solutions for assessing biodiversity and disturbance. Spatial dynamics are an important component of an ecosystem, yet the link between spatial dynamics and soundscapes has not yet been studied. It should be possible to assess disturbance of an ecosystem by analyzing …

Predicting Advertisement Clicks Using Deep Networks: Interpreting Deep Learning Models, Karan Samel Aug 2017

Predicting Advertisement Clicks Using Deep Networks: Interpreting Deep Learning Models, Karan Samel

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Deep learning has achieved state-of-the-art results in a variety of tasks such as classifying images and driverless cars. In this paper, I used deep learning to understand consumer product interests. One of the main goals for advertisement agencies is to develop mathematical models to predict whether consumers will click on their advertisement. Achieving the highest click prediction rate means that these agencies can pay to place their online advertisements effectively to target people most interested in their product. Most existing approaches are based on logistic regression or regression tree models (Trofi mov, Kornetova, & Topinskiy, 2012). The model based on …

Strain Measurement In A Specimen Subjected To Out-Of-Plane Movement: Using An Open-Source Digital Image Correlation-Based Tool, Thomas Pfauth, Joel Poling

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Structural health monitoring (SHM) helps engineers maintain structures, enhance their safety, and operate them cost-effectively. Digital image correlation (DIC) techniques applied to SHM are noncontact techniques; they are also fast, accurate, and simple to implement. The goal of this investigation was to determine the smallest strain accurately measurable by a standard opensource DIC-based tool, in a specimen subjected to out-of-plane movement (toward or away from sensor). The investigation builds upon an initial study which determined the smallest accurately measurable strains using the same DIC-based tool in a specimen that was not subjected to controlled out-of-plane specimen movement. This initial study …
