Mathematical Modelling Of The Rotor-Driven Revolving Vane Compressor With Fixed Vane (Rv-I) With Consideration Of The Vane Thickness, Alison Subiantoro, Kim Tiow Ooi
Mathematical Modelling Of The Rotor-Driven Revolving Vane Compressor With Fixed Vane (Rv-I) With Consideration Of The Vane Thickness, Alison Subiantoro, Kim Tiow Ooi
International Compressor Engineering Conference
The rotor-driven revolving vane compressor with a fixed vane (RV-I compressor) was introduced in 2008. It has been shown to exhibit superior mechanical performance as compared to conventional rotary compressors and the original revolving vane compressor design due to its unique cylinder-rotor arrangement. In such a machine, both the rotor and the cylinder rotate together with the help of the vane, resulting in significantly reduced frictional losses. Mathematical models had been developed and validated to simulate the characteristics of RV-I compressors. These models typically assumed negligible vane thickness to simplify the analysis. In this paper, a new mathematical model for …

Development Of A Rotary Vane Expander For An R-22 Heat Pump System, Vishal Vishal, Wanqing Xia, Alison Subiantoro
International Compressor Engineering Conference
A traditional vapour compression refrigeration system consists of a compressor, a condenser, a throttling device and an evaporator. The typical throttling devices are capillary tube and expansion valves. Unfortunately, such devices waste expansion energy. To overcome this issue, expanders have been proposed in recent years. An expander can be observed as a compressor operating in a reversed cycle. It expands fluid and produces power which could be used to supply energy to the compressor or other components. The expansion process is more gradual, unlike that in typical throttling devices. Naturally, an expander is most attractive and has been studied most …

Organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is widely recognized as a viable technology to convert low temperature heat into electricity. Compared to other emerging technologies, ORC systems have a number of advantages such as low maintenance, favourable operating pressures and autonomous operation. Among the ORC components, selection of the appropriate expander and working fluid affects the overall cycle’s efficiency, size and cost. Expanders are classified into dynamic and positive displacement machines. Twin screw expanders belong to the latter group and compared to other expanders have the advantage of high isentropic efficiency (up to 70%), high pressure ratios (typically 2-10), simple structure, potential …

Machine Learning Applied To Positive Displacement Compressors And Expanders Performance Mapping, Davide Ziviani, Ammar M. Bahman, Nelson A. James, Dominique Lumpkin, James E. Braun, Eckhard A. Groll
International Compressor Engineering Conference
Positive displacement compressors are critical components in today’s vapor compression refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pumping applications and can also be applied as expanders in power generation systems, such as organic Rankine cycles (ORC). The simulation of such systems is essential to predict and optimize the performance behavior at full- and part-load conditions. To this end, comprehensive system models are built by including different sub-models corresponding to each cycle component (e.g., heat exchangers, compressor, linesets). In general, the higher the complexity of each sub-models utilized to capture the physics, the higher the computational time required to solve a simulation run. …
Performance Analysis Of Internally Geared Positive Displacement Machines, Matthew Read, Nikola Stosic, Ian Smith
Performance Analysis Of Internally Geared Positive Displacement Machines, Matthew Read, Nikola Stosic, Ian Smith
International Compressor Engineering Conference
Internally geared positive displacement machines consist of an externally lobed inner rotor rotating inside an internally lobed outer rotor. The rotors can have a constant profile along their length and rotate about parallel axes. Relative to the axis of rotation, the lobes of the rotors can either be straight (as found in conventional gerotor type machines), or helical (as previously proposed by the authors). In either case, the profiles must be specified in order to maintain continuous contact points between the rotors to maintain sealed working chambers. The use of stationary ported plates located at both end faces of the …

Fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) have become a research hotspot because of the continuous increase in transportation needs, energy needs, and environmental issues. However, several challenges must be overcome to be competitive with conventional vehicles. The performance of air and hydrogen cycles depends on compressors. It is a key issue to guarantee the efficiency and reliability of FCVs. In this paper, the working conditions of hydrogen and air scroll compressors in FCVs were described in details. 3D transient CFD numerical simulations with dynamic meshing of the air scroll compressor and the hydrogen compressor/pimp were presented. The performance of scroll compressors in …

From Cad To 1d: A Direct Approach To Modeling Scroll Compressors With Multi-Physics Simulation, Jonathan Nicholas Harrison, Steven Koester, Rodrigo Aihara, David Ratner
International Compressor Engineering Conference
Modeling scroll compressors with 1D fluid dynamics often involves the time-consuming exercise of calculating chamber volume and port areas vs. crank angle either manually from CAD or through scripting. In a novel approach, GT-SUITE simulation software is used starting from the original CAD model of the scroll fixed and orbiting involutes to create a 1-dimensional fluid dynamic model automatically. This allows models to be built in minutes while preserving the true CAD geometry. The process of calculating the chamber volume, port area, leakages, and areas required to convert chamber gas pressure to forces/moments on the orbiting scroll will be presented. …

Vibration Analysis Of Twin-Screw Compressors Under Partial Load Design: A Case Study, Leila Bakhtiaryfard, Shi-Xian Chen, Yu-Ren Wu, Sheng-Hung Hsieh, Yu-Hua Huang
International Compressor Engineering Conference
In the practical operation, twin-screw refrigerant compressors may suffer the partial load for a longer period than the full load, while different working condition leads to different response of noise and vibration on the compressor. In this paper, a new approach has been proposed to assess the vibration of a twin-screw refrigeration compressor under 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% load conditions. A powerful computational fluid dynamic (CFD) software, CFX, coupled with a professional grids generation software, TwinMesh, has been used to simulate the rotor loads and p-V indicator diagram which are then checked by the compressor manufacturer’s machine type selection …

Cfd Analysis Of Oil Distribution In Oil-Injected Screw Compressor, Jin-Wei Zhang, Sheng-Hung Hsieh, Chi-Shun Huang
International Compressor Engineering Conference
Oil-injected screw compressor has been used in various industries. After decades of continuous research efforts by research teams around the world, the computer tools for rotor profile design, thermodynamic analysis, CFD/CAE calculation, and moving grid generation have been well developed and widely employed in design works. With assistance from the computer tools in performance simulation, designers could clearly understand internal phenomena of a screw compressor, as a reference for performance optimization design, and systematically carry out research works. One important issue inside an oil-injected screw compressor is about oil distribution. Different oil-injected positions and quantities cause different oil distribution inside …

Concentration Measurement Of Refrigerant/Lubricant Mixture, Pierre Ginies, Yann Even, Quentin Guesnay
International Compressor Engineering Conference
The solubility of refrigerants in the lubricant is a key factor for the life time of a compressor. The new Low Global Warming Potential (LGWP) refrigerants are showing generally higher solubility in lubricants than usual refrigerants. It is important to compare the dilution changes in the oil sump during compressor operation due to refrigerants properties. Sampling is a measurement method commonly used to measure dilution in working compressor but can be time consuming and it disturbs the system behavior. Additional security precautions need to be taken when sampling flammable refrigerant. This paper presents a measurement method based on the permittivity …

A Piezoactuated Micro Diaphragm Compressor With A Hydraulic Drive, Dr. Yuanlin Hu, Wen Wang
International Compressor Engineering Conference
A low volumetric efficiency and low actuation force are the two disadvantages of a diaphragm-type piezoactuated micro compressor. A hydraulic drive was introduced to the micro compressor for the sake of improving its volumetric efficiency and actuation force. The hydraulic oil was driven by the piezoactuator and transferred the actuation force to a flexible diaphragm, which compressed the fluid in a domed cavity. Analytical solution was derived to predict the performance (pressure rise and flow rate) of the micro compressor. The solution included large deflections of a flexible diaphragm under a uniform pressure load and non-linear deflections of a diaphragm-type …

International Compressor Engineering Conference
3D CFD modelling is widely employed for the detailed analysis of flow and thermodynamics in complex machines such as twin screw compressors. The advantage of such high resolution simulations is that realistic geometry of the rotors and the ports can be captured. Additionally, the physical effects of fluid thermal interactions and leakage are directly captured by these models. Recent studies have shown that for dry air and oil injected air compressors a good agreement is achieved with measurements, in prediction of performance parameters. In these simulations the Eulerian-Eulerian multiphase modelling has been applied. To implement the same model for water …

Experimental Investigation On A Novel Two-Stage Sliding-Vane Air Compressor Based On The Intracooling Concept, Ida Costanzo, Gianluca Valenti, Stefano Murgia, Francesca Baia
International Compressor Engineering Conference
Intercooling is a well-known practice in compression technology for reducing the discharge temperature and the power consumption of the process. Intracooling, a similar yet not identical concept, is the cooling of the compressed gas between two compression stages by way of spraying a liquid coolant in the gas flow without separating that liquid prior to the second compression stage. This liquid coolant can be the cooled lube oil. The present work reports the experimental experience on a first prototype of a small-scale two-stage sliding-vane compressor based on the concept. The prototype is design for a relatively low delivery pressure, 0.7-1.0 …

First, a test rig has been built to perform several tests on the volumetric machine. It is an ORC power system with a typical architecture using …
Numerical Simulation Of Discharge Process In The Single Screw Compressor, Zhao Zhang, Chengyu Peng, Weifeng Wu
Numerical Simulation Of Discharge Process In The Single Screw Compressor, Zhao Zhang, Chengyu Peng, Weifeng Wu
International Compressor Engineering Conference
In the process of the single screw air compressor, the symmetrical grooves of the compressor are periodically connected with the discharge ports and the gas enters the discharge chamber or flows back from chamber, generating gas pulsation. The gas pulsation increases the flowing loss to bring additional energy loss, meanwhile the gas pulsation is the one of main reasons for the generation of vibration and noise. The thermodynamic model of the compression chamber and the discharge chamber of a single screw air compressor is established in this paper taking the discharge chamber structure and the flow resistance into consideration. The …

International Compressor Engineering Conference
During the operation of the reciprocating compressors, the flapper valve closes by striking against the valve impact plate. This valve reed and impact plate interaction is repeated billions of times and is thought to play a significant role in controlling the impact fatigue life of the valve reed and, hence, the performance of the compressor. The effect on impact fatigue properties of the interaction between the valve reed and the impact plate has been recognized as one of the potentially important aspects of compressor design. The goal of this study was to understand how the performance and impact fatigue life …

Leakage Simulation Of A Lubricant-Free Rotary Type Swing Compressor Rotor Endface Clearance, Yeu De Lim, Wai Chang Poh, Kim Tiow Ooi
International Compressor Engineering Conference
For a dry compressor, internal leakage losses are always significant due to the absence of lubricant. In this paper, a simulation study focuses on the leakage through a rotary swing compressor rotor endface clearance is presented. Leakage is found to increase during the compression process and decreases when discharge process starts. Due to the complexity of the rotor geometry, the leakage simulation is carried out by using a CFD computational code under different operating conditions and the results are then used to be an input to the lumped simulation model to analyze the compressor’s overall performance. With this approach, a …

Performance Comparison Of Empirical And Semi-Empirical Compressor Models With Uncertainty Analysis And Probabilistic Forecasting Techniques, Howard Cheung, Shengwei Wang
International Compressor Engineering Conference
There are various empirical and semi-empirical models to estimate the performance of compressors. While some studies support the use of empirical methods for their high accuracy with the available experimental observations of compressor performance, others claim that semi-empirical methods can estimate the performance at extrapolation conditions more reliably. To understand if these claims are true, quantitative comparison of various types of compressor models was conducted based on uncertainty analysis. But these methods evaluate the accuracy and uncertainty of the models separately, and it is difficult for model users to comprehend their results. In this paper, the comparison of model accuracy …

Comparison Of Measurement Methods For Piston And Crankshaft Kinematics Of Reciprocating Compressors, Leonardo Do Nascimento Cervelin, Alan Batschauer, Carlos Alberto Flesch, Rodolfo C. C. Flesch
International Compressor Engineering Conference
The measurement of the kinematics of reciprocating compressors, such as position, speed and acceleration, is an important part of a wide range of tests. Examples of these tests are the determination of the pV diagram, which depends on the measurement of the piston position; the determination of the Coefficient of Performance (COP), which requires the measurement of angular speed; friction loss experiments, which require the rotational speed and the deceleration of the compressor. Due to their importance for R&D of reciprocating compressors, this paper presents a review of the kinematic measuring methods for reciprocating compressors. Additionally, a test rig was …

Experimental Investigation Of A Hydrocarbon Piston Compressor For High Temperature Heat Pumps, Opeyemi Bamigbetan, Trygve Magne Tme Eikevik Prof., Petter Nekså, Michael Bantle, Christian Schlemminger, Mauro Dallai
International Compressor Engineering Conference
The global trend towards carbon neutral industries require sustainable and climate friendly heat supply. Heat pumps can meet this requirement, but the technical capability today often limit the heat supply temperature to below 90°C. The major challenge in the development of a heat pump that can deliver heat at high temperatures (115 oC) to the heat sink is the operability and performance of the compressor. The compressor electric motor cooling, lubrication stability and material durability are important physical properties to evaluate for a compressor working at high temperatures. In this study, compressors operating with natural fluids such as hydrocarbons are …
