A Rheometry Method To Assess The Evaporation-Induced Mechanical Strength Development Of Polymer Solutions Used For Membrane Applications, Eduard Caicedo Casso, Jessica L Sargent, Rachel M. Dorin, Ulrich B. Wiesner, William A. Phillip, Bryan M. Boudouris, Kendra Erk

School of Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Rotational and oscillatory shear rheometry were used to quantify the flow behavior under minimal and significant solvent evaporation conditions for polymer solutions used to fabricate isoporous asymmetric membranes by the self-assembly and non-solvent induced phase separation (SNIPS) method. Three different A-B-C triblock terpolymer chemistries of similar molar mass were evaluated: polyisoprene-^-polystyrene-6-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (ISV); polyisoprene-6- polystyrene-6-poly(V,A-dimethylacrylamide) (ISD); and polyisoprene-Z>-polystyrene-h-poly(fer/- butyl methacrylate) (ISB). Solvent evaporation resulted in the formation of a viscoelastic film typical of asymmetric membranes. Solution viscosity and film viscoelasticity were strongly dependent on the chemical structure of the triblock terpolymer molecules. A hierarchical magnitude (ISV>ISB>ISD) was observed …

Simulation Assessment Of A Near-Optimal Control Algorithm For Central Cooling Plants With Chilled Water Storage, Rita Cristina Jaramillo, James E. Braun, W. Travis Horton

International High Performance Buildings Conference

This paper presents the results of the evaluation of a control algorithm for minimizing energy costs in cooling plants with chilled water storage. The control approach requires very little plant information, is computationally simple, and is general in the sense that it is applicable to different types of utility rate structures including real-time pricing (RTP), time-of-use (TOU) and TOU with demand charges. The control algorithm was evaluated using a model of an existing chiller plant of significant complexity built in a simulation testbed for different combinations of storage sizes, load profiles and electricity rates. The performance of the near-optimal algorithm …

Utilizing Wearable Devices To Design Personal Thermal Comfort Model, Mostafa Rafaie, Mehari Tesfay, Fadi Alsaleem

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Apart from the common environmental factors such as relative humidity, radiant and ambient temperatures, studies have confirmed that thermal comfort significantly depends on internal personal parameters such as metabolic rate, age and health status. This is manifested as a difference in comfort levels between people residing under the same roof, and hence no general comprehensive comfort model satisfying everyone. Current and newly emerging advancements in state of the art wearable technology have made it possible to continuously acquire biometric information. This work proposes to access and exploit this data to build personal thermal comfort model. Relying on various supervised machine …

An Economic Model Predictive Control Framework For Distributed Embedded Battery Applications, Nishith R. Patel, James B. Rawlings, Matthew J. Ellis, Michael J. Wenzel, Robert D. Turney

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Since building heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are significant consumers of primary energy, considerable efforts are being made to improve energy efficiency and decrease energy costs in these applications. Notably, substantial opportunities in the area of HVAC control exist for decreasing energy costs by shifting loads from peak periods to off-peak periods in the presence of time-varying utility prices. This load shifting is also beneficial for power companies since it results in a more constant total load allowing them to operate more efficiently. Economic model predictive control (MPC) has been shown to significantly decrease the energy costs of …

Integrated Platform For Whole Building Hvac System Automation And Simulation, Lina Yang, Yuhui Kuang, Yuan Yuan, Jinlei Ding, Yonghua Zhu

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Integrated optimal control strategies can reduce the overall building HVAC system energy consumption as well as improved air quality resulting in improved health and cognitive function for the occupants. However, it is time consuming to quantitatively evaluate the design-intended building HVAC automation system performance before on-site deployment, because: 1) the building and HVAC system design specs are in 2D or 3D drawings that require significant efforts to develop the system steady state or dynamic models based on them; 2) the building HVAC control strategies are designed and implemented in building automation (BA) system that could not smoothly connect with the …

The increasingly competitive HVAC market has made it necessary to develop technologies that exploit the economic potential in such systems to reduce energy consumption. Smart HVAC operation through optimization-based control strategies, such as model predicative control (MPC), serves as one method for achieving this goal. MPC and Economic MPC have gained significant attention due to their ability to optimally operate HVAC system in order to minimize their energy consumption and/or energy cost while maintaining desired comfort temperatures. Several research work have attempted to use system identification in order to model building thermal and HVAC dynamics. Nonetheless, empirically modeling HVAC systems …

State Observer For Optimal Control Using White-Box Building Models, Iago Cupeiro Figueroa, Ján Drgoňa, Mohammad Abdollahpouri, Damien Picard, Lieve Helsen

International High Performance Buildings Conference

In order to improve the energy efficiency of buildings, optimal control strategies, such as model predictive control (MPC), have proven to be potential techniques for intelligent operation of energy systems in buildings. However, in order to perform well, MPC needs an accurate controller model of the building to make correct predictions of the building thermal needs (feedforward) and the algorithm should ideally use measurement data to update the model to the actual state of the building (feedback). In this paper, a white-box approach is used to develop the controller model for an office building, leading to a model with more …

Energy Optimization Of An In-Service Commercial Building Chiller Plant Via Extremum Seeking Control, Hoang Dung Vu, Bryan David Keating, Andrew George Alleyne, Kok Soon Chai, Zhenjie Zhang

International High Performance Buildings Conference

In the last 30 years, research into energy optimization via supervisory control of building chiller plants has yielded promising approaches ranging from detailed physics model based optimization to data based or model free optimization. In general, while physics based models tend to require domain expertise and significant calibration effort for implementation, data based and model free approaches require less calibration effort but may be risky to implement due to concerns about robustness to normal variations in environmental conditions and changes to the number of chillers in operation. This paper focuses on rigorous experimental evaluation and verification of model free extremum …

Towards Real Mpc Implementation In An Office Building Using Taco, Filip Jorissen, Damien Picard, Iago Cupeiro Figueroa, Wim Boydens, Lieve Helsen

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Model predictive control (MPC) is a promising alternative to rule-based control since it is more suitable to control increasingly complex buildings and thereby realising energy savings and comfort improvement. Practical implementations are however hampered by the complexity of MPC and the expertise required for developing MPC. Therefore, a toolchain for automated control and optimization (TACO) has been developed that automatically translates an object-oriented Modelica model into an efficient MPC code. Since object-oriented models from the Modelica IDEAS library are used, the expertise requirement and development time are reduced significantly. TACO has, however, not yet been applied to a real building …

A Simplified Regression Building Thermal Model Of Detached Two-Floor House In U.S. For Virtual Energy Storage Control, Borui Cui, Jin Dong, Jeffrey Munk, Ning Mao, Teja Kuruganti

International High Performance Buildings Conference

The residential building sector accounts for approximately 37% of total U.S. electricity consumption. Within the residential building sector, heating and cooling is the main target for peak load shifting/reduction since it is the largest contributor to peak demand. In fact, the flexibility of residential HVAC loads can provide continuous variation of demand to provide grid services. Such load can be taken as virtual energy storage (VES) resources by varying their demand over a baseline so that they appear to be providing the same service as electrical battery energy storage to the grid. The performance of HVAC load control to provide …

Model Predictive Control Of Inverter Air Conditioners Responding To Real-Time Electricity Prices In Smart Grids, Maomao Hu, Fu Xiao

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Real-time electricity prices provide great opportunities for residential consumers to participate in demand response (DR) programs in smart grids. One of the biggest challenges faced by the DR program participants are the lack of advanced DR-enabled residential appliances which can automatically respond to real-time electricity prices, especially the lack of DR-enabled air conditioners which are the major contributors to electricity bills. In this paper, we aim to use model predictive control (MPC) techniques to control the inverter air conditioners. Instead of simply adjusting temperature set-points in the conventional DR control strategies, the MPC controllers are used to directly control the …

Preliminary Assessment Of A Weather Forecast Tool For Building Operation, José Agustín Candanedo, Jean-Marc Hardy, Étienne Saloux, Radu Platon, Vahid Raissi-Dehkordi, Alexandre Côté

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Although the potential of model predictive control (MPC) for the operation of buildings is widely recognized, as of today its adoption has been rather limited. This is partly due to the lack of user-friendly software tools for MPC, such as tools to facilitate the incorporation of forecast information in building automation systems. In view of this, CanmetENERGY, a research centre of Natural Resources Canada, has developed CanMETEO, a software tool free of charge aimed at obtaining weather forecast data and make it available in a useful and practical format for building operators. CanMETEO, which was released officially in August 2017, …

Comparison Of Three Transient Models For Slab Heating/Cooling Systems, Anthony Rey, Rémi Dumoulin, Andreas Athienitis

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Radiant floor heating and cooling systems can be beneficial in various applications such as heating or cooling buildings and in infrastructure applications such as de-icing of bridges and roads as well as snow melting. Such systems usually include a significant amount of thermal mass, thus providing energy flexibility in buildings. Models of embedded-tube radiant systems are therefore useful to predict their behavior (rate of heat transfer and outlet heat-transfer fluid temperature), which can be used for the development of predictive control strategies and optimal control algorithms. As a result, a comparison of different models is conducted in this paper. The …

Design Of Experiments For Learning Personalized Visual Preferences Of Occupants In Private Offices, Nimish Awalgaonkar Awalgaonkar, Jie Xiong, Ilias Bilionis, Athanasios Tzempelikos, Panagiota Karava

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Occupants working in offices with controllable shading and lighting systems often perform adaptive actions (raising/lowering shades, increasing/decreasing light levels) in an attempt to restore their preferred state of the room. This preference for different room conditions (states) has been shown to vary from person to person and may be affected by exterior conditions. This paper presents an online data-driven methodology which actively queries a new occupant for learning their personalized visual preferences. Preference is governed by a latent preference relation equivalent to a scalar utility function (the higher the utility, the higher the preference for that state). Information about user …

A Data-Driven Approach Towards Integration Of Microclimate Conditions For Predicting Building Energy Performance, Soumik Sarkar, Linjiang Wu, Venkatesh Chinde, Himanshu Sharma, Ulrike Passe

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Energy consumption in buildings is a major part of the overall energy usage in the United States and across the world. Energy performance of buildings is primarily affected by the heat exchange with the building outer skin and the surrounding environment. Building energy simulation (BES) tools are capable of predicting energy usage with variable degree of accuracy using the building geometry, construction information and weather data. In this regard, it is a common practice in BES tools to include boundary conditions of the building shell based on the local weather station. However, to account for accurate building energy consumption, especially …

This paper proposes and develops an occupancy-based control and optimization framework for reducing energy consumption and cost within the context of Buildings-to-Grid (BtG) integration. A mathematical framework of large-scale integration, control and optimization of solar powered buildings with battery energy storage system and the grid is proposed and demonstrated. Building MPC formulations are designed based on appropriately linearized large commercial building conditioning and battery system models. A high-level linearized grid distribution network is also developed via IEEE standard grid systems with 9, 14, and 30 buses. The final decentralized utility-scale BtG integrations with battery storages, photovoltaics generations, different grid systems, …

Analysis Of Round-Trip Efficiency Of An Hvac-Based Virtual Battery, Naren Srivaths Raman, Prabir Barooah Jul 2018

Analysis Of Round-Trip Efficiency Of An Hvac-Based Virtual Battery, Naren Srivaths Raman, Prabir Barooah

International High Performance Buildings Conference

The flexibility in power consumption of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems in buildings can be utilized to provide a battery-like service to the power grid. Recent work has reported that using HVAC systems in such a manner may lead to a net increase in energy consumption compared to normal operation, similar to a low round-trip efficiency (RTE) of a battery. In our previous work we showed that the low RTEs reported were due to the way the experiments/simulations were performed, and that using an HVAC system as a virtual battery repeatedly leads to an asymptotic RTE of one. In …

Mpc Performance For Hybrid Geotabs Buildings, Damien Picard, Lieve Helsen Jul 2018

Mpc Performance For Hybrid Geotabs Buildings, Damien Picard, Lieve Helsen

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Hybrid GEOTABS buildings are buildings equipped with a ground source heat pump (GSHP), thermally activated building systems (TABS), a conditioned ventilation and, optionally, additional heating and cooling systems such as variable-air-volume boxes or radiators. GEOTABS can be very energy efficient but their controllability is limited and thermal comfort is therefore not always guaranteed. Hybrid GEOTABS systems have the potential to eliminate these problems, provided the different system components interact properly. In this paper, we investigate the performance of hybrid GEOTABS systems for an office building, a retirement home, a school and a block of flats when controlled by a current …

Modification And Assessment Of A Residential Summer Program For High School Women, Aimee Cloutier, Guo Zheng Yew, Siddhartha Gupta, Kalpani Dissanayake, Paula Monaco, Susan Mengel, Audra Morse

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

The importance of reducing the gender gap in engineering programs by recruiting and retaining female students is well recognized. Although women hold roughly half of all jobs in the United States, only 24% of STEM jobs are occupied by women. The problem is even more pronounced for engineering, where women held about 12% of jobs as of 2013 (Corbett & Hill, 2015). Consequently, interactive, hands-on outreach programs are a common tool used by universities to encourage interest in engineering from K–12 students. Engineering—Get Into Real Learning (E-GIRL) is a week-long, residential summer program offered by Texas Tech University for female …

Intersectional Education, Claire Lee, Claire Marsh, Mikaela Meyer, Jessica Sullivan

Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Policy Briefs

Education leads to higher future success, freedom, autonomy over one’s lifestyle, and an overall better quality of life. Unfortunately, women make up seventy percent of the world’s out-of-school youth. Additionally, minority groups are suffering from lack of access to educational resources, including native tongue instruction (Intel 2012). Not only are both groups suffering separately, but the intersection of female and minority groups are not achieving the same educational outcomes as majority or male groups. This brief explores this problem and examines how some governments are trying—or not trying—to address it.
