Examining The Factor Structure Of The Home Mathematics Environment To Delineate Its Role In Predicting Preschool Numeracy, Mathematical Language, And Spatial Skills, David J. Purpura, Yemimah A. King, Emily Rolan, Caroline Byrd Hornburg, Sara A. Schmitt, Sara A. Hart, Colleen M. Ganley

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

A growing body of evidence suggests that the ways in which parents and preschool children interact in terms of home-based mathematics activities (i.e., the home mathematics environment; HME) is related to children’s mathematics development (e.g., primarily numeracy skills and spatial skills); however, this body of evidence is mixed with some research supporting the relation and others finding null effects. Importantly, few studies have explicitly examined the factor structure of the HME and contrasted multiple hypothesized models. To develop more precise models of how the HME supports children’s mathematics development, the structure of the HME needs to be examined and linked …

Construct-Specific And Timing-Specific Aspects Of The Home Environment For Children’S School Readiness, Yemimah A. King, Robert Duncan, German Posada, David J. Purpura

Purdue Center for Early Learning Faculty and Staff Publications

Prior evidence supports that the home environment is related to children’s development of school readiness skills. However, it remains unclear how construct- and timing-specific aspects of the home environment are related to children’s school readiness skills, unique from overall, stable aspects of home quality. Unpacking associations due to specific constructs and timing of the home environment may provide insights on the theoretical processes that connect the home environment to school readiness. Using data from the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (N = 1,364), the current study examines how timing (36 and 54 months) and constructs …

Fourier, Marx, And Social Reproduction, Blanca Missé Aug 2020

Fourier, Marx, And Social Reproduction, Blanca Missé

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

This article establishes a conversation between the work of materialist socialist Charles Fourier and Marxist social reproduction theory (SRT). SRT has laid the ground to explore who produces the producer, in order to analyze and integrate the role of reproductive labor into a comprehensive Marxist view of the capitalist economy. In the context of the critical re-appraisal of the labor of social reproduction, Fourier offers a key materialist perspective which is also present in Marx: the identity between labor and desire in the socialist project. Fourier's materialism, I show, greatly influenced both Marx and Engels, for whom labor was also …

Investigation Of The Split In The Fundamental Air-Cavity Mode Of Loaded Tires, Won Hong Choi, J Stuart Bolton Aug 2020

Investigation Of The Split In The Fundamental Air-Cavity Mode Of Loaded Tires, Won Hong Choi, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

It is well known that a tire’s fundamental air-cavity mode, typically near 200 Hz for current passenger car tires, can split into two adjacent features when a tire is loaded and hence deformed, thus creating a fore-aft, horizontal mode and a vertical mode. This split happens because the deformed tires is no longer geometrically symmetric: the air channel in the bottom region of the tire is narrowed, hence effectively increasing the inertia in that region, and thus causing the fore-aft mode, which has a relatively large particle velocity in the bottom part of the tire, to have a lower natural …

Development And Application Of Dual Form Conic Formulation Of Multichannel Active Noise Control Filter Design Problem In Frequency Domain, Yongjie Zhuang, Yangfan Liu Aug 2020

Development And Application Of Dual Form Conic Formulation Of Multichannel Active Noise Control Filter Design Problem In Frequency Domain, Yongjie Zhuang, Yangfan Liu

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

Active noise control filter design methods can be categorized as time-domain or frequency-domain methods. When multiple frequency-dependent constraints need to be specified, such as the enhancement constraint, stability constraint, and robustness constraint, the optimal filter coefficients can be obtained more conveniently by solving a constrained optimization problem formulated using frequency-domain methods. However, the computational load for searching the global optimal solution is significantly high, if the number of channels, filter coefficients, or constraints is large. To improve computational efficiency, some previous work relaxed the traditional formulation to a convex problem, and then reformulated it to a cone programming problem. After …

An Empirical Exploration Of Southeast Asian-Americans In Education Research: A Qualitative Meta-Analysis, Peter T. Keo

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

This research examined how Southeast Asian-Americans are treated in leading K-12 and higher education research. A qualitative meta-analysis was conducted using secondary data sources. I analyzed 1,192 pages of text from 151 peer-reviewed academic articles in six K-12 and higher education journals. In a span of 10 years (2007-2016), only four of the 151 articles (2.6%) reviewed specifically addressed in whole or in part Southeast Asian-Americans – one of the most disadvantaged ethnic minority groups in America. Findings demonstrated that aggregating racial data for Asian-Americans silences under-represented Southeast Asian-Americans, suggesting that the continued fight for racial equality in educational research …

Who Is Welcome Here? A Culturally Responsive Content Analysis Of Makerspace Websites, Hannah Kye Jul 2020

Who Is Welcome Here? A Culturally Responsive Content Analysis Of Makerspace Websites, Hannah Kye

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Makerspaces and maker education are widely seen as means to democratize science and engineering education. A small but growing body of scholarly work warns against this assumption and calls for an explicit focus on equity in makerspaces both online and in person. With an understanding of learning as a social and cultural process, this paper proposes that disrupting the cycle of racial and cultural inequity in science education requires makerspace educators and staff to ground their work in multicultural theories and practices. In particular, culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) provides guidance for infusing science and engineering with equity approaches in order …

Math Anxiety In Female And Underrepresented Minority Students A Literature Review, Anne M. Lucietto, Meher Rusi Taleyarkhan, Therese M. Azevedo, Natalie Hobson

School of Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

Educators have noticed that some students respond to exercises requiring mathematical calculations with numerical answers that are not correct and far from realistic. These student solutions are often given without further comment or calculation by the students and seem to such avoidance by the students to engage with the numerical calculations. Anecdotal evidence, by these educators, suggest that such responses are more prevalent from female and underrepresented minority groups — raising the question of whether demographics play a role in a students’ approach to numerical problems. Researchers have searched for existing work in this area and find that there are …
