Rome Vaut Bien Un Prix. An Artistic Elite In The Service Of The State: The Pensionnaires Of The Académie De France In Rome, 1666-1968, Annie Verger

Artl@s Bulletin

The Dictionnaire biographique des pensionnaires de l’Académie de France à Rome serves as a register for the artists sent to Italy by the French state from the time of Louis XIV in 1666 up until the abolition of the Prix de Rome concours in 1968. After this year, the selection of pensionnaires nonetheless continued this tradition in another form, and the Académie de France in Rome thus celebrated its 350th anniversary in 2016. This notion of continuity lies at the heart of the present study, which has been carried out over a number of years.

Bordentown: Where Dewey’S “Learning To Earn” Met Du Boisian Educational Priorities, Connie Goddard Jun 2019

Bordentown: Where Dewey’S “Learning To Earn” Met Du Boisian Educational Priorities, Connie Goddard

Education and Culture

John Dewey and W.E.B. Du Bois were prominent critics of how vocational education programs were often used to restrict rather than enhance student aspirations. An overview of the Bordentown Manual Training and Industrial School for Colored Youth (1886–1955) suggests that it met requirements both men articulated for the right kind of vocational education; however, the school’s legacy has been largely ignored by historians. Further, Dewey and Du Bois, who knew of but had little interaction with each other, may never have discussed their shared interest in vocational education or their awareness of the school’s mission and accomplishments.

Facing The Ruler, Facing The Village: On The Roads To Complicity Following Mengzi And Benda, Zvi Ben-Dor Benite Jun 2019

Facing The Ruler, Facing The Village: On The Roads To Complicity Following Mengzi And Benda, Zvi Ben-Dor Benite

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, “Facing the Ruler, Facing the Village,” Zvi Ben-Dor Benite seeks to broaden the boundaries of the discussion about complicity by taking it away from late 20th-century and contemporary debates about it. At the same time, he wishes to highlight the many faces that the problem of complicity could have in different historical moments. Following Czesław Miłosz, this article understands that there are many roads to complicity that have been articulated in different ways across time and space. This article is, therefore, an integrated meditation on complicity bringing together two radically distant approaches to the question. Reading the …

Progressive Education And Racial Justice: Examining The Work Of John Dewey, Kelly Vaughan Jan 2019

Progressive Education And Racial Justice: Examining The Work Of John Dewey, Kelly Vaughan

Education and Culture

John Dewey was a progressive theorist, a pragmatist, a philosopher, and arguably the most influential American educator of the twentieth century. Yet, despite extensive documentation about John Dewey's philosophies of education and democracy, there is limited research and no consensus about Dewey's views about race and racism. I use a combination of primary sources, secondary sources, and archival data to explore the John Dewey's ideas about progressivism, racism, and schooling. I assert that Dewey, despite an expressed commitment to full and equal rights for African American students, normalized the experience of White students and implicitly endorsed accommodationist education reforms for …

Foucault And The Recommencement Of Philosophy, Javier De La Higuera Dec 2018

Foucault And The Recommencement Of Philosophy, Javier De La Higuera

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Javier de la Higuera discusses in his “Foucault and the Recommencement of Philosophy” the idea of a recommencement of philosophy that Michel Foucault has posited on several occasions, although with different meaning and intentions. This article reconstructs how he approached this in the 1960s and shows the fundamental changes that this idea of recommencement underwent in the later Foucault. In his last three years at the Collège de France, Foucault appeared to reinterpret the very idea of philosophy based on his analysis of ancient spirituality and of parrhesiastic philosophical practice. The interpretation that Gilles Deleuze gave of late Foucault, devoted …

Liquid-Vapor Imaging In Fuel Sprays Using Lifetime-Filtered Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence, Alber Douglawi Aug 2018

Liquid-Vapor Imaging In Fuel Sprays Using Lifetime-Filtered Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence, Alber Douglawi

Open Access Theses

Many performance parameters in combustion systems are heavily dependent on the fuel injection process. Liquid-vapor imaging in spray applications has proven to be difficult because of the dominance of the liquid phase signal due to its higher number density. This work addresses this issue by employing temporal filtering in Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) imaging. Temporal filtering takes advantage of the fact that although the vapor signal tends to be weaker, its fluorescence signal persists longer than the liquid signal under the same conditions. An experimental setup was designed with the capability to supply a two-phase flow in a controlled environment …

Secular Discourse In Postcolonial West African Narratives: Problems And Perspectives: A Comparative Study, Malick Coly Aug 2018

Secular Discourse In Postcolonial West African Narratives: Problems And Perspectives: A Comparative Study, Malick Coly

Open Access Dissertations

The making of modern African nations and their attendant secularistic establishment have not only altered traditional socio-political structures, this shift has equally affected the relations between individuals as well as communities. In the process leading to modern sociocultural transformations, tensions and discourse have arisen. Toyin Falola’s Violence in Nigeria: Crisis of Religious Politics and Secular Ideologies, and Ousman Murzik Kobo’s Unveiling Modernity in Twentieth-Century West African Islamic Reforms highlight respectively the political and religious divide in post-Independence Nigeria and the impact of Islamic reform in Ghana and Burkina Faso. These two historical studies show the complexity of modern West African …

Reconstruction Of Social Studies, William Gaudelli, Megan J. Laverty May 2018

Reconstruction Of Social Studies, William Gaudelli, Megan J. Laverty

Education and Culture

As the world grows increasingly contentious, education for citizenship demands greater attention. Yet at this perilous juncture, social studies has neglected to take up the task of preparing citizens in a democratic and global society. Social studies has become increasingly fragmented and isolated by disciplinary foci that fetishize academic pursuits over broadly social purposes, precisely what Dewey warned against and which represent but a small portion of its functions. The academic-only social studies education has created a temporal disconnection that affirms the preparation for future life rather than, as Dewey preferred, the school as life itself. Dewey tasked the school …

Discourse, Documents, And Counter-Discipline: Michel Foucault’S Ethics And The Practice Of Writing, Strand Sheldahl-Thomason May 2018

Discourse, Documents, And Counter-Discipline: Michel Foucault’S Ethics And The Practice Of Writing, Strand Sheldahl-Thomason

Open Access Dissertations

Michel Foucault spent the last years of his life in an investigation of ancient ethical practices. The practices can be summarized in one phrase: the care of the self. Although this investigation grows out of Foucault’s interest in biopolitics and sexuality, and is ostensibly a continuation of his History of Sexuality project, it nonetheless reconfigures that project and adds to it the dimension of subjectivity. It therefore presents a challenge to Foucault scholarship. Broadly speaking, critics have taken Foucault’s ethical turn to signify either a retreat from politics or a historical investigation of how ancient people internalized social possibilities. I …

Sex, Culture, And The Politics Of Fashion In Stuart England, Emilie M. Brinkman May 2018

Sex, Culture, And The Politics Of Fashion In Stuart England, Emilie M. Brinkman

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation is the first full-length study to analyze the politicization of dress and material objects, exploring the manner in which fashion served as a site for political discourse and agency, during the seventeenth century, specifically from 1603–1702, an era characterized by profound political, religious, and social turmoil as well as increased international trade and luxury consumption. This dissertation demonstrates how fashion, which encompassed clothing, accessories, hairstyling, and cosmetics, was an important facet of political culture within Stuart England and, furthermore, was absolutely fundamental to how the English understood themselves, others, and the turbulent world they lived in. I argue …

Undertaking Educational Research Following The Introduction, Implementation, Evolution, And Hybridization Of Constructivist Instructional Models In An Australian Pbl High School, Adam Hendry, Gavin Hays, Kurt Challinor, Daniel Lynch

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the introduction, implementation, evolution, hybridization, and initial research into the constructivist instructional models deployed within a secondary (high) school in Australia. A concomitant aim is to relate some of the consequences of whole school pedagogical change, which have included the implementation of project- and problem-based learning, the flipped classroom, and a derivative hybridized form, referred to here as “flipped PBL.” Moreover, after a decade of using constructivist approaches, we initiated educational research to better understand some of the effects of these changes and to explore the reasons behind the …

Food Security Crop Price Transmission And Formation In Nigeria, Patrick L. Hatzenbuehler Aug 2016

Food Security Crop Price Transmission And Formation In Nigeria, Patrick L. Hatzenbuehler

Open Access Dissertations

The three studies in this dissertation explore the current conditions and operations of markets for seven key food security crops (cassava, cowpeas, maize, millet, rice, sorghum, and yams) in Nigeria.

Chapter 2 is an empirical analysis of the current agricultural statistics system in Nigeria. A number of sources gather and report agricultural statistics for the country. Since there has not been an agricultural census implemented there for multiple decades, however, there is no objective source for data verification. Therefore, this study uses two additional types of “on the ground information” to assess if agricultural production estimates reflect growing conditions: prices …

Rhetoric And Feminism In The Americanization Era: The Ywca's Rhetorical Education Program For Immigrant Women, Gracemarie Mike Apr 2016

Rhetoric And Feminism In The Americanization Era: The Ywca's Rhetorical Education Program For Immigrant Women, Gracemarie Mike

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation examines the Young Women’s Christian Association’s International Institute movement from an administrative perspective. Founded in the United States during the Americanization Era of the early 20 th century, the International Institute movement developed programs and services for immigrant women. One of the most prominent, and least examined, aspects of the movement was its work in the area of rhetorical education for non-English speaking immigrant women. Using a feminist, administrative historiographic methodology, this project positions the work of the International Institute’s administrators ecologically among other Americanization efforts taking place in this time period. Arguing that the International Institute movement …

Statistical Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Seawalls And Coastal Forests In Mitigating Tsunami Impacts In Iwate And Miyagi Prefectures, Roshanak Nateghi, Jeremy D. Bricker, Seth D. Guikema, Akane Bessho

The Pacific coast of the Tohoku region of Japan experiences repeated tsunamis, with the most recent events having occurred in 1896, 1933, 1960, and 2011. These events have caused large loss of life and damage throughout the coastal region. There is uncertainty about the degree to which seawalls reduce deaths and building damage during tsunamis in Japan. On the one hand they provide physical protection against tsunamis as long as they are not overtopped and do not fail. On the other hand, the presence of a seawall may induce a false sense of security, encouraging additional development behind the seawall …

To Honor Our Past: Historical Research, Library History And The Historiographical Imperative: Conceptual Reflections And Exploratory Observations, Jean-Pierre V. M. Hérubel

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

This exploratory discussion considers history of libraries, in its broadest context; moreover, it frames the entire enterprise of pursuing history as it relates to LIS in the context of doing history and of doing history vis-à-vis LIS. Is it valuable intellectually for LIS professionals to consider their own history, writing historically oriented research, and what is the nature of this research within the professionalization of LIS itself as both practice and discipline? Necessarily conceptual and offering theoretical insight, this discussion perforce tenders the idea that historiographical innovations and other disciplinary approaches and perspectives can invigorate library history beyond its current …

The Challenge Of Evaluating And Developing An Interdisciplinary Collection: The East Asian Collection At The Public College, Ewa Dzurak, Kerry Falloon, Jonathan Cope Sep 2015

The Challenge Of Evaluating And Developing An Interdisciplinary Collection: The East Asian Collection At The Public College, Ewa Dzurak, Kerry Falloon, Jonathan Cope

Charleston Library Conference

When the faculty of the College of Staten Island, CUNY (CSI) introduced a new baccalaureate level program in East Asian Studies the library faced the challenge of evaluating the adequacy of its holdings to support the program and its future development. Multidisciplinary fields of study (e.g., East Asian Studies) that pertain to a specific geographical or cultural area present a unique set of evaluative issues because their subject content cannot be confined to set classification ranges, rendering the traditional methods of collection analysis inadequate. This poster will present the results of an evaluation of CSI’s East Asian Studies collection, discuss …

Introduction To And Bibliography For The Study Of Alimentary Life Writing And Recipe Writing As War Literature, Louise O. Vasvari Sep 2015

Introduction To And Bibliography For The Study Of Alimentary Life Writing And Recipe Writing As War Literature, Louise O. Vasvari

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Introduction to and Bibliography for the Study of Alimentary Life Writing and Recipe Writing as War Literature" Louise O. Vasvári defines the concept of "alimentary life writing" and locates it in the broader multidisciplinary context of alimentary history, the history of everyday life, gender studies, trauma, and war and holocaust studies. She also underlines and exemplifies the cultural and gendered significance of alimentary life writing in particular in grounding personal and collective identity formation in the female immigrant and ethnic and multicultural writing. Vasvári also compares and contrasts such life writing to wartime food memoirs, as well …

The White Australia Policy, The British Empire, And The World, David Atkinson Sep 2015

The White Australia Policy, The British Empire, And The World, David Atkinson

Department of History Faculty Publications

his article recovers the essential imperial and international context of the Immigration Restriction Act in 1901, and argues that the foundational deliberations that produced the White Australia Policy cannot be fully understood without attention to that global perspective. Indeed, the real and potential imperial and international implications of Asian restriction dominated the parliamentary debates and influenced the policy's character and application from the outset. The debate was not about whether to implement a restrictive immigration regime, it was about how to implement that regime, a calculus suffused with a range of imperial and international considerations. This paper therefore argues that …

Women’S Tanci Fiction In Late Imperial And Early Twentieth-Century China, Li Guo Jul 2015

Women’S Tanci Fiction In Late Imperial And Early Twentieth-Century China, Li Guo

Comparative Cultural Studies

In Women’s Tanci Fiction in Late Imperial and Early Modern China, Li Guo presents the first book-length study in English of women’s tanci fiction, the distinctive Chinese form of narrative written in rhymed lines during the late imperial to early modern period (related to, but different from, the orally performed version also called tanci) She explores the tradition through a comparative analysis of five seminal texts. Guo argues that Chinese women writers of the period position the personal within the diegesis in order to reconfigure their moral commitments and personal desires. By fashioning a “feminine” representation of subjectivity, …

Intimacy And Autonomy: Twentieth Century American Women And The Quest For Self-Realization, Mary Florence Barford Jan 2015

Intimacy And Autonomy: Twentieth Century American Women And The Quest For Self-Realization, Mary Florence Barford

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation examines the effects of culturally managed gender expectations on intimate spaces. The study of these intimate spaces is rooted in the biographies of four relationships in the post-war period. Through exploration of these individual stories an understanding emerges of how monolithic cultural paradigms work for men and for women in very different ways. For purposes of archival availability and continuity, this dissertation focuses on a very specific group of people, namely women of great talent and ambition who were either married to or in a relationship with a man whose fame eclipsed her own. My question became how …

The Counterfactual History Novel In Nineteenth-Century British Literature, Elizabeth Moline Cuddy Jan 2015

The Counterfactual History Novel In Nineteenth-Century British Literature, Elizabeth Moline Cuddy

Open Access Dissertations

Although scholarship has long since established the history novel’s general course, few critical readings of the history novel address the innovative means through which writers could manipulate the use of history within these novels. Nor, for that matter, have many scholars considered the relationship between the slow decline of this form of literature as a consequence of the combined effect of the rise of historical studies as a serious academic discipline during the 1830s, and the growing trend for the realist novel throughout the following decades. My dissertation explores how Britons’ fascination with history not only shaped the progress of …

The Road To Vienna: Habsburg And Ottoman Statecraft During The Time Of Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa Paşa (1676-1683), Yasir Yilmaz

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation comparatively analyzes Habsburg and Ottoman decision-making and statecraft during the time of Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa Paşa (1676-1683). I synthesize Habsburg diplomatic reports and Ottoman chronicles to show that during the peace negotiations between the Habsburg envoys and Kara Mustafa Paşa’s court before the second Turkish siege of Vienna in 1683, the two state’s diplomatic postures were shaped by their different court structures. At the end, in response to the religiously-oriented explanations of early modern Habsburg-Ottoman confrontations, I argue that the monumental encounter in 1683 was a product of the difference between the two states’ governmental priorities and …
