On The Front Line: Locating Mentorship In The Composition Practicum, Sherri Elaine Craig
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation is a qualitative study of fifteen WPA instructors of the composition practicum. Driven by the primary research question, how do WPAs enact mentorship within composition practicum?, the study sought to better identify how WPAs enact and perceive mentorship within the composition practicum through an activity-theory framework in three distinct phases: a collection and analysis of twenty-six pedagogical materials, twelve structured interviews, and one case study. Through these phases, it was determined the difficulty of locating mentorship of TAs required distinguishing between performing mentoring acts and establishing mentoring relationships first, and second, a construction of the practicum course materials …
The Alien Eye: Chinese Self-Images And The External Observer, 1874–1911, Yingying Huang
The Alien Eye: Chinese Self-Images And The External Observer, 1874–1911, Yingying Huang
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation is a literary study of how and why late Qing Chinese self-image formation involved the “alien eye,” by which I mean the view of the foreigner observing and writing about China. I investigate writings and occasionally images produced within the period from 1874 to 1911, framed by the founding of the first Chinese-owned modern newspaper and the overthrow of the Qing empire. The literary genres I address include essays, short stories, novels, and plays. While effects of foreign views of China on the Chinese varied from positive stimulation to psychological damage, I argue that Chinese’ appropriation of the …

Cognitive Poetics, Conceptual Metaphors And Blending In German Travel Literature On India, Aditi S. Rayarikar
Open Access Dissertations
In recent years there has been a growth in travel writing and its reception despite the effects of globalization that has brought the world closer than previous centuries. This trend can be further supported with the publication of recent anthologies and theoretical works that explore multi-dimensional approaches to travel writing, especially in the Anglo-American Literature and Cultural Studies.1 But this trend is not just limited to Anglo-American Studies and is equally present in German literature where travel literature also encompasses what is termed as “literature of movement” highlighting migrant literature, transnational and transcultural literature.2 The recently published Reiseliteratur der Moderne …
Contested “Chineseness” In Transnational Narratives: Works By Post-1979 Chinese/American Immigrant Writers Ha Jin And Geling Yan, Ping Qiu
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation aims to claim immigrant literature as an essential part of Chinese American studies. It responds to the challenge by considering how “Chineseness” is negotiated, challenged, and transformed in the literary texts produced by both writers. I argue that “Chineseness” as presented by post-1979 immigrant writers Ha Jin and Geling Yan is a transnational process of defamiliarization, radicalization, and transformation. In their work, new immigrant writers are self-consciously and strategically positioning themselves as both insider and outsider. They engage in, negotiate, and challenge the troubling term “Chineseness” as defined in either U.S-centric/Eurocentric or Sinocentric points of view. For writers, …

The Subversion Of East And West In Orhan Pamuk’S Novel, The White Castle, Adile Aslan Almond
The Subversion Of East And West In Orhan Pamuk’S Novel, The White Castle, Adile Aslan Almond
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "The subversion of East and West in Orhan Pamuk's novel, The White Castle" Adile Aslan seeks to show how Orhan Pamuk plays with the theme of East versus West in his third novel The White Castle (1985), with the aim of de-essentializing both concepts. In 1928, Perso-Arabic script, in use for centuries as the main writing system in the Ottoman Empire, was replaced with Latin alphabet (accompanied by an intensive Turkification of the Ottoman language in the coming years) as a part of a larger modernization-Westernization project in the new nation state, a move which effectively …

Differences And Similarities In The Discourse Of Equality In Cross Cultural Academic Dialogues Europe-China, Xiana Sotelo
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her paper "Differences and Similarities in the Discourse of Equality in Cross Cultural Academic Dialogues Europe-China" Xiana Sotelo provides an overall summary of the historical, political and socioeconomic context of Chinese women and their understanding of equality. The paper also embraces commonalities and nodal points between Chinese and European gender academics. In particular, it highlights the realization that cross-cultural misunderstandings are not triggered by essential differences among us, but by the ignorance of our particularities and specific contexts. The willingness to be open to the diversity of each other´s realities, and to reject hegemonic discourses of sameness, paves the …

However, within a structure of female repression, Confucian feudalism and colonization, the Haenyeo can be seen as emancipatory pioneers and voluntary economic agents, displaying initiative and pro-activeness and protecting their rights and …

Innovations In Self-Consciousness. Towards Oneness With The World, Soon-Ok Myong, Byong-Soon Chun
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their article "Innovations in Self-Consciousness. Towards Oneness with the World" Soon-ok Myong and Byong-soon Chun examine the limitations and vulnerabilities of modern civilization. Asia is a multiethnic, multilingual and multicultural territory of over 40 countries and more than 4.4 billion people, that is, almost half of the population of the world. The One Asia community seeks to question a world made up of strong egos that make up businesses, organization and nations, and embrace communal goals, helping Asia and the world to become 'one community.' Thus, the paper suggests ways of self-innovation through forms of transitional consciousness. Although the …

A Confucian Holistic World Order And China's Vision Of A Shared Future, Huiyong Wu
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "A Confucian Holistic World Order and China's Vision of a Shared Future," Huiyong Wu traces the differences between the Western world and China, as well as their impact upon politics, economic relations and culture. In particular, Wu focuses on China's political ideal, based on Confucian moral ethics, which emphasizes inter-subjectivity over the individual subjectivity, and which holds a strong vision of communal respect among national citizens. This vision might be somehow in conflict with the Western tradition that places individual freedom above everything else. Through initiatives like "the Belt and Road" China is steadily developing and promoting …

The basic means based on a trust mechanism include the provision of loans only to women, five-person teams, a system of conference centers, personal financial management and weekly repayment with golden membership awards. Although the Grameen mode presents different practice effects around the world due to cultural differences, the fundamental cause for success is the respect showed to human beings by the model, and a tailored program that includes rather than excludes. The Grameen model …

Intimacies Of Power: Eroticized Violence And Gendered Sexuality In Transgressive Art 1890s— #Metoo, Julia Louisa Smith
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation seeks to understand eroticized violence by analyzing sadism and masochism as models of modern masculinity and power. I look at the literature and theory of male sexual sadism and masochism as “artefacts of art” as metaphors of male subjectivity expressed across vast and interdisciplinary cultural fields of cultural expression (Bersani, Freudian Body 5). Best understood as an aesthetic formation, masochism shows how cultural formations of subjectivity and sexualized violence are a modern for m of power that operates by means of subversion and can tolerate its own castration. As a metaphor of modern masculinity, de Sade’s sadism shows …
Working Equids: A Case Study Investigating If Locus Of Control Effects Welfare In Central America, Lauren Ann Brizgys
Working Equids: A Case Study Investigating If Locus Of Control Effects Welfare In Central America, Lauren Ann Brizgys
Open Access Theses
Developing countries lack the resources and technological advancements commonly used by developed countries for production and must rely on manual or animal labor to aide in the creation, collection, and distribution of products for income. In Haiti and Honduras, the leading role of a working equid is to provide transportation for families and products to and from marketplaces. It is not uncommon for one equid to carry loads three times its body weight and make up to six trips, accumulating up to fifty miles per day, to and from its home. With extreme environmental and physical constraints placed on these …
Refiguring Hybridity In Star Trek, Elizabeth Gellis
Refiguring Hybridity In Star Trek, Elizabeth Gellis
Open Access Theses
In this thesis, I explore the ways in which the Star Trek franchise posits hybridity. Examining three hybrid characters—Spock and B’Elanna, both half-human, half-alien, and Data, an android—I explore how each character relates to their hybrid identity and envisions their own hybridity. Rejecting previous models for hybridity that use an additive, percentage-based logic, I use these characters to create a new framework for hybridity. Beginning with the figure of the Jew as an example of alternative Otherness, I posit hybridity as an emergent entanglement, a unifying force that reconciles and reinforces the disparate parts of the self—while retaining an Otherness …
The Importance Of Power, Distance, And Imposition On Spanish Verb Forms In Requests, Bruno Staszkiewicz Garcia
The Importance Of Power, Distance, And Imposition On Spanish Verb Forms In Requests, Bruno Staszkiewicz Garcia
Open Access Theses
This thesis analyzed the production of requests through the framework of Politeness Theory and the variables of power, distance, and imposition (Brown & Levinson, 1987). Research on Spanish has focused on Spanish requests (e.g. Placencia, 1998; Lorenzo Díaz, 2016) or cross-cultural analyses of requests (e.g. Blum-Kulka, House & Kasper, 1989; Márquez-Reiter, 2000). However, the lack of balance in the contexts examined regarding the social variables power, distance, and imposition makes it difficult to compare the effect of these variables on the request norms. Furthermore, requests likely vary according to other contextual factors as well, but this has received little systematic …

Calderón's Musical Message: The Importance Of The Auditory Over The Visual, Laura Ramiro Moreno
Open Access Dissertations
Calderón de la Barca, a highly philosophical and religious playwright, focused the final part of his career on experimenting with musical court theater. My dissertation explains the motivation behind Calderón’s implementation of music in his theatrical productions and the situation that led him to create the new dramatic genre of zarzuela. This project analyzes the evolution of early modern musical theater in Spain by observing musical elements that are reflected in the text and related to characters and themes in the plays. A reflection on musical conventions in European theater, through the use of cognitive theories, studies on music and …

Sex, Culture, And The Politics Of Fashion In Stuart England, Emilie M. Brinkman
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation is the first full-length study to analyze the politicization of dress and material objects, exploring the manner in which fashion served as a site for political discourse and agency, during the seventeenth century, specifically from 1603–1702, an era characterized by profound political, religious, and social turmoil as well as increased international trade and luxury consumption. This dissertation demonstrates how fashion, which encompassed clothing, accessories, hairstyling, and cosmetics, was an important facet of political culture within Stuart England and, furthermore, was absolutely fundamental to how the English understood themselves, others, and the turbulent world they lived in. I argue …
Aesthetic Autopsy. Collective Memory And Trauma In Contemporary Art From Angola, Nadine Siegert
Aesthetic Autopsy. Collective Memory And Trauma In Contemporary Art From Angola, Nadine Siegert
Artl@s Bulletin
Angolan history is mainly a history of wars. After the long anti-colonial fight (1961 – 1974) that ended with the independence of the country in 1975, a civil war between the former independence movements started. In the 1980s, Angola was the venue for a proxy war between the Socialist bloc and Western countries, supporting the different protagonists fighting on Angolan territory. After the crumbling of cold war ideologies in 1989, the war continued as a struggle for political hegemony and access to natural resources until 2002, devastating lands, economy and social structures. These historical events might have led to trauma …
Of Levinas And Shakespeare: "To See Another Thus", Sandor Goodhart, Moshe Gold, Kent Lehnhof
Of Levinas And Shakespeare: "To See Another Thus", Sandor Goodhart, Moshe Gold, Kent Lehnhof
Purdue University Press Book Previews
Scholars have used Levinas as a lens through which to view many authors and texts, fields of endeavor, and works of art. Yet no book-length work or dedicated volume has brought this thoughtful lens to bear in a sustained discussion of the works of Shakespeare. It should not surprise anyone that Levinas identified his own thinking as Shakespearean. "The play’s the thing" for both, or put differently, the observation of intersubjectivity is. What may surprise and indeed delight all learned readers is to consider what we might yet gain from considering each in light of the other.
Comprising leading scholars …

Rechnitzer explores the theo-political predicament as reflected in the writings of poet, playwright and novelist Shin Shalom (Parczew Poland 1904–Haifa, Israel 1980). Particular attention is given to writings composed during the intensification of violence between Arabs and Jews in Mandatory Palestine from the early 1920s through the Arab revolt of 1936-39. This period is also a volatile period in Shalom's life; Aliya (Zionist immigration to the Land of Israel) with a Hasidic Zionist group, leaving the Hasidic settlement …

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Frame, Preference, and Memory in Literary History Narration" Guoqiang Qiao analyzes the frame, preference and memory in literary historiography from a narratological and cognitive perspectives. He maintains that literary history is of multileveled narration that includes not only the perceptualized literary events, literary figures, and literary works, but also the conceptualized spirit of the time, national culture, and personal and collective memories. Qiao employs the basic concepts of frame, preference, and memory to suggest a cognitive approach to the narration of literary history. To illustrate the complex construction of literary historiography, he provides examples from Chinese literary …
