What's Past Is Prologue: Imagining The Socialist Nation In Cuba And In Hungary, Patricia D. Fox
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Patricia D. Fox's article, "What's Past is Prologue: Imagining the Socialist Nation in Cuba and in Hungary," examines the symbolic mooring of Cuban and Hungarian identity, recuperated Caliban from William Shakespeare's The Tempest and an ever conflicted Faustus/Adam from Imre Madách's Az ember tragédiája, respectively. Despite serial cosmological fragmentations and political upheaval, the present analysis holds that production and reproduction of these founding figures in the process of imagining the socialist nation represent an ongoing litigation of meaning. This process then conserves a marked thematic continuity through temporal conceptions, totality of exegesis, the mix of rational and mythical, and the …

Marko Juvan's article, "Thematics and Intellectual Content: The XVth Triennial Congress of the International Comparative Literature Association in Leiden," offers an in-depth view of the intellectual structure and atmosphere of the Congress. The author describes both in detail and in an overview the thematics of the Congress, Literature as Cultural Memory, and explicates the intellectual content of a good number of important panels and papers presented at the Congress. Vera Zubarev proposes in her article, "The Comic in Literature as a General Systems Phenomenon," that the definitions of and about aspects of dramatic genre are best articulated from the theoretical approach of systems theory. Aldo Nemesio argues in his article "The Comparative Method and the Study of Literature" for the comparative method as follows. Contemporary literary research is based on parameters and methods which do not appear to have evolved similar to other fields of inquiry. The Effect Of National Culture On Partner Buyouts In Cross-Border Biotechnology Alliances, Timothy B. Folta, Walter J. Ferrier
Purdue CIBER Working Papers
This study examines how national culture influences the likelihood and rate of buyouts amont R&D equity alliances and joint ventures in the biotechnology industry. We hypothesize that the interaction of specific national culture attributes and cultural differences between alliance partners bear upon: a) the amount of endogenous uncertainty surrounding the potential integration of the target firm and b) the marginal rate of learning in hierarchical versus collaborative governance. Applying a competing hazard model to a sample of 173 joint ventures and minority equity collaborations in the biotechnology industry, we found that investing firms from high power distance and high uncertainty …

Cross-National Empirical Generalization Of A Supplier Selection And Usage Model For Foreign Exchange Services, D. Bowman, J. U. Farley, D. C. Schmittlein
Purdue CIBER Working Papers
This paper tests generalizations across four countries of an industrial marketing model applied to foreign exchange services which banks sell to large corporations. The process by which customers elicit bids from the marketplace, evaluate suppliers, and award business is used in a two-step framework typical for industrial markets: (1) factors important to winning and/or retaining any business (supplier selection) in a context of multiple suppliers; and (2) factors important to growing business volume of a particular supplier (supplier usage).
