Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation For Requests With Classes And Priorities In Preemptive Distributed Networks, Amit D. Naik, Howard Jay Siegel, Edwin K. P. Chong Jul 2000

Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation For Requests With Classes And Priorities In Preemptive Distributed Networks, Amit D. Naik, Howard Jay Siegel, Edwin K. P. Chong

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In today's general-purpose networked computing environments, both commercial and military, in addition to providing connectivity, providing quality of service (QoS) to users is a major concern. One of the major QoS parameters in this context is bandwidth. This research focuses mainly on the intelligent allocation of bandwidth to requests in oversubscribed networks such that, some measure of worth associated with the satisfied requests is optimized. In this work, heterogeneous networks with preemptive capabilities have been considered. A preemptive network is capable of interrupting a request that is currently in progress to service a request that is considered to be more …

Dynamic Feature Selection For Hardware Prediction, Alan Fern, Robert Givan, Babak Falsafi, T. N. Vijaykumar Jul 2000

Dynamic Feature Selection For Hardware Prediction, Alan Fern, Robert Givan, Babak Falsafi, T. N. Vijaykumar

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

It is often possible to greatly improve the performance of a hardware system via the use of predictive (speculative) techniques. For example, the performance of out-of-order microprocessors is greatly enhanced by predicting the outcomes of conditional branch instructions. Most hardware predictors are table based (e.g., two-level branch predictors)- maintaining predictive information for each combination of values of a set of features (e.g., a set of previous branch outcomes). Table-based approaches suffer from the fact that the predictor sizes grow exponentially in the number of features considered by the predictor-this severely limits the amount of predictive information that can be effectively …

Women Succeeding In The Sciences: Theories And Practices Across Disciplines, Jody Bart Jun 2000

Women Succeeding In The Sciences: Theories And Practices Across Disciplines, Jody Bart

Purdue University Press Books

Ample evidence has been provided that women historically have suffered numerous social, political, and institutional barriers to their entrance and success in the sciences. The articles in this anthology refocus the discussion and reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the issues surrounding women in the sciences. While the barriers that women have faced as researchers, subjects of research, students of science, and theorists have been well documented, this anthology breaks new ground. It presents the ways women succeed in the sciences, overcome these historical barriers, and contribute to the social practice of science and the philosophy of science in both theory …

Visualization Techniques To Identify And Quantify Sources And Paths Of Exterior Noise Radiated From Stationary And Nonstationary Vehicles, Hiroshi Stuart Takata Jun 2000

Visualization Techniques To Identify And Quantify Sources And Paths Of Exterior Noise Radiated From Stationary And Nonstationary Vehicles, Hiroshi Stuart Takata

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

In recent years, Nearfield Acoustical Holography (NAH) has been used to identify stationary vehicle exterior noise sources. However that application has usually been limited to individual components. Since powertrain noise sources are hidden within the engine compartment, it is difficult to use NAH to identify those sources and the associated partial fields that combine to create the complete exterior noise field of a motor vehicle. Integrated Nearfield Acoustical Holography (INAH) has been developed to address these concerns: it is described here. The procedure entails sensing the sources inside the engine compartment by using an array of reference microphones, and then …

On Literariness: From Post-Structuralism To Systems Theory, Marko Juvan Jun 2000

On Literariness: From Post-Structuralism To Systems Theory, Marko Juvan

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "On Literariness: From Post-Structuralism to Systems Theory," Marko Juvan argues that the question of literariness concerns the very identity and social existence of not only literature per se but of literary theory as a discipline. A literary theorist is not only an observer of literature; he/she is also a participant who -- at least indirectly, via the a priori systems of science and education -- is engaged in constructing both the notion and the practice of literature as well as the study of literature. Literariness is neither an invariant cluster of "objectively" distinctive properties of all texts …

Call Center Benchmarking: How Good Is, Jon Anton, David Gustin Jun 2000

Call Center Benchmarking: How Good Is, Jon Anton, David Gustin

Purdue University Press Books

Executives are beginning to recognize the potential of the call center as a significant revenue generator, perhaps one of the surest investments they can make in enhancing and creating customer value and bottom-line profits. Return on investments made in customer accessibility is seldom less than 100% in the first year, and frequently even more if customer lifetime value is included in the equation. Herein lies the challenge and the primary reason to benchmark your call center metrics against not only the best-in-the-world, but also your most direct competitors, i.e., best-in-class.

A Story For All Americans: Vietnam, Victims, And Veterans, Frank L. Grzyb, John F. Kerry Jun 2000

A Story For All Americans: Vietnam, Victims, And Veterans, Frank L. Grzyb, John F. Kerry

Purdue University Press Books

Story for All Americans: Vietnam, Victims, and Veterans (formerly titled, Touched by the Dragon) details wartime accounts of average servicemen and women-some heroic, some frightening, some amusing, some nearly unbelievable. The work is a historical compendium of fascinating and compelling stories woven together in a theme format. What makes this book truly unique, however, is its absence of literary pretentiousness. Relating oral accounts, the veterans speak in a no-nonsense, matter-of-fact way. As seen through the eyes of the veterans, the stories include first-person experiences of infantry soldiers, a flight officer, a medic, a nurse, a combat engineer, an intelligence soldier, …

Bakhtin, Genre Formation, And The Cognitive Turn: Chronotopes As Memory Schemata, Bart Keunen Jun 2000

Bakhtin, Genre Formation, And The Cognitive Turn: Chronotopes As Memory Schemata, Bart Keunen

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "Bakhtin, Genre Formation, and the Cognitive Turn: Chronotopes as Memory Schemata," Bart Keunen proposes a new reading of Bakhtin's notion of the chronotope. Bakhtin is widely taken to be a pioneer of genological thinking, but one of his key concepts -- the chronotope -- is still subject to highly divergent interpretations. Moreover, the epistemological implications of his genology have not yet been fully realized. In this article, a methodological grounding in schema theory is proposed. Bakhtin's concept can be used to study the way in which literary communication functions through what the psychologist Frederic Bartlett first called …

How Is A Genre Created? Five Combinatory Hypotheses, Johan F. Hoorn Jun 2000

How Is A Genre Created? Five Combinatory Hypotheses, Johan F. Hoorn

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "How is a Genre Created? Five Combinatory Hypotheses," Johan F. Hoorn discusses that in genre theory, the creation of a genre is usually envisioned as a complex selection procedure in which several factors play an equivocal role. First, he advances that genre usually is investigated at the level of the phenomenon. For instance, questions may drawn on the effects of social status, education, or "intrinsic values" on forming a genre, on an author's decision with regard to in which genre to express his/her creativity. Second, Hoorn attempts to formulate a general mechanism that explains the forming of …

Multispectral Imaging, Image-Processing And Classification For Agriculture, Leonard. C. Lobo, Okan K. Ersoy, Gaines E. Miles

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The prevention and control of weed infestation is a matter of importance in the agricultural domain. American farmers alone annually spend $4 billion to protect $16 billion in crops. This work moves in this direction and aims to classify weeds from crops and then spray the weeds in real-time. Another aim is to find the correlation coefficient between the nitrogen treatment levels of the crops and the statistical values computed. In this work, multispectral reflectance images are used in conjunction with classification techniques to detect, classify and spray weeds on a real-time basis in the field. Multispectral images were grabbed …

Hardware Support For Data Dependence Speculation In Distributed Shared-Memory Multiprocessors Via Cache-Block Reconciliation, Renato J. 0. Figueiredo, Jose A.. B. Fortes May 2000

Hardware Support For Data Dependence Speculation In Distributed Shared-Memory Multiprocessors Via Cache-Block Reconciliation, Renato J. 0. Figueiredo, Jose A.. B. Fortes

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Data dependence speculation allows a compiler to relax the constraint of data-independence to issue tasks in parallel, increasing the potential for automatic extraction of parallelism from sequential programs. This paper proposes hardware mechanisms to support a data-dependence speculative distributed shared-memory (DDSM) architecture that enable speculative parallelization of programs with irregular data structures and inherent coarse-grain parallelism. Efficient support for coarse-grain tasks requires large buffers for speculative data; DDSM leverages cache and directory structures to provide large buffers that are managed transparently from applications. The proposed cache and directory extensions provide support for distributed speculative versions of cache blocks, run-time detection …

Dynamically Resizable Instruction Cache: An Energy-Efficient And High-Performance Deep-Submicron Instruction Cache, Se-Hyun Yang, Michael Powell, Babak Falsafi, Kaushik Roy, T. N. Vijaykumar May 2000

Dynamically Resizable Instruction Cache: An Energy-Efficient And High-Performance Deep-Submicron Instruction Cache, Se-Hyun Yang, Michael Powell, Babak Falsafi, Kaushik Roy, T. N. Vijaykumar

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Increasing levels of on-chip integration have enabled steady improvements in modem microprocessor performance, but have also resulted in high energy dissipation. Deep-submicron CMOS designs maintain high transistor switching speeds by scaling down the supply voltage and proportionately reducing the transistor threshold voltage. Lowering the threshold voltage increases leakage energy dissipation due to an exponential increase in the leakage current flowing through a transistor even when the transistor is not switching. Estimates from the VLSI circuit community suggest a five-fold increase in leakage energy dissipation in every future generation. Modem microarchitectures aggravate the leakage energy problem by investing vast resources in …

Detection Of Rare Events And Rule Extracition By Neural Networks And Decision Trees, Wooyoung Choe, Okan K. Ersoy Mar 2000

Detection Of Rare Events And Rule Extracition By Neural Networks And Decision Trees, Wooyoung Choe, Okan K. Ersoy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Sample stratification is a technique for making each class in a sample have equal influence on decision making. For classification with neural netwobrks, it is often preferable to use a stratified sample including an equal number of examples from each class;. However, it is not always possible to have a stratified sarrlple because of unavailability of examples (referred to as rare event cases). For rare event detection, we develop two sample stratification schemes in this research. The first scheme stratifies a sample by adding up the weighted sum of the derivatives during the backward pass of training. The second scheme …

Handbook For The Post-Earthquake Safety Evaluation Of Bridges And Roads, Julio A. Ramirez, Robert J. Frosch, Mete A. Sozen, A. Murat Turk Mar 2000

Handbook For The Post-Earthquake Safety Evaluation Of Bridges And Roads, Julio A. Ramirez, Robert J. Frosch, Mete A. Sozen, A. Murat Turk

JTRP Technical Reports

It is acknowledged that the most damaging earthquake within the state took place on September 27, 1909 near the Illinois border between Vincennes and Terre Haute. Both nonstructural and structural damage occurred to the buildings in this area, and it was felt strongly in the southwest of Indiana including Indianapolis. Unfortunately, due to the long recurrence interval of strong earthquakes in Mid-America, a large inventory of structures has accumulated without explicit consideration of seismic resistance. Highway bridges are a significant component of this inventory. The seismic vulnerability of highway bridges constructed within the state, especially in southwestern portion of Indiana, …

Sightseeing In Paris With Baudelaire And Breton, Benton Jay Komins Mar 2000

Sightseeing In Paris With Baudelaire And Breton, Benton Jay Komins

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Sightseeing in Paris with Baudelaire and Breton," Benton Jay Komins discusses the tensions between Charles Baudelaire's acts of modern appropriation and André Breton's imaginative seizing of the démodé. While Breton roams the Parisian cityscape with the same aspect of creative gazing as Charles Baudelaire's nineteenth-century dandy, the objects and experiences that he privileges are different from the dandy's fashionable marvels. In texts such as Nadja passé artifacts captivate Breton. Between Baudelaire's revelling in the elegant modern possibilities of dandysme and Breton's imaginative seizing of démodé objects, something significant has occurred: Twentieth-century urbanites like Breton no longer celebrate …

Computer And Internet Adoption On Large U.S. Farms, Brent A. Gloy, Jay Akridge Jan 2000

Computer And Internet Adoption On Large U.S. Farms, Brent A. Gloy, Jay Akridge

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

The adoption of the personal computer and the Internet is studied within a sample of large U.S. farms. Factors such as age and education influence the adoption of both technologies. Likewise, strong relationships exist between the adoption of each technology and the sophistication of farm management and the complexity of the farm business. After controlling for computer adoption, the results suggest there remain several factors limiting Internet adoption. It appears that producers are unsure as to how the Internet can best be used to create value in their farm businesses.
