Dorian Gray, Tom Ripley, And The Queer Closet, Jonathan Alexander, Deborah Meem Dec 2003

Dorian Gray, Tom Ripley, And The Queer Closet, Jonathan Alexander, Deborah Meem

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their paper, "Dorian Gray, Tom Ripley, and the Queer Closet," Jonathan Alexander and Deborah Meem present and portray an imaginary conversation among an impossible but intriguing group of writers, critics, and fictional characters. These individuals speak in their own (published) voices, which are moderated by the author-facilitators and shaped into an extended rumination on art, the Doppelgänger, queerness, and literary influence. Through their dialogue, the actors reveal a tradition of the queer novel, running in this case from Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray to Patricia Highsmith's five Tom Ripley books, whereby the closet functions simultaneously as refuge …

Anthropometric And Physiological Responses To Prolonged Open Water Rowing: A Case Study, Dan A. Gordon Oct 2003

Anthropometric And Physiological Responses To Prolonged Open Water Rowing: A Case Study, Dan A. Gordon

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

The objective of the study was to examine the anthropometric and physiological responses to a prolonged period of open water rowing 4950 km. A single male (novice) rower underwent assessment of anthropometric variables, pre- and post-race, for the assessment of mass (kg), girths of selected regions, skinfold thickness and regional muscularity. The results showed that following 61 days of continual rowing there was a decrease in the participant's mass by 11.7%, sum of skinfolds decreased by 19.5 cm and regional muscularity decreased by 11.1 %. The data would suggest that the participant exhibited symptoms of muscle atrophy and energy deficit. …

The Impact Of Simulated Digital Data Radio Communication Induced Interference On Voice Radio Communication Intelligibility, Daniela Kratchounova Oct 2003

The Impact Of Simulated Digital Data Radio Communication Induced Interference On Voice Radio Communication Intelligibility, Daniela Kratchounova

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

Testing to date indicates there is a significant potential for adverse interference from the digital system to the analog system, especially for General Aviation (GA) aircraft. This type of interference can be described as short, random bursts of noise capable of completely obliterating parts of the voice communication. The subsequent degrading effects on voice radio communication could jeopardize flight safety. To address this issue, the goal of the present study was to examine the degree to which such noise impacts voice radio communication intelligibility. Intelligibility was assessed employing a classic, well-established psycho-acoustic method, which uses human beings, rather than electronic …

Assessment Of Real Data And Theoretical Issues In Extreme Aviation Environments, Peter I. Terrence, Richard D. Gilson, Peter A. Hancock Oct 2003

Assessment Of Real Data And Theoretical Issues In Extreme Aviation Environments, Peter I. Terrence, Richard D. Gilson, Peter A. Hancock

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

We investigated performance in extreme aviation situations using data recorded from actual in-flight emergencies that resulted in an accident. Response times to such sounds as alarms, auditory cues, and critical verbal statements were extracted from cockpit voice recorder (CYR) transcripts. Preliminary screening identified 14 CYR transcripts which permitted response time evaluation. Results from these selections showed crewmember response times ranging from 1 second to 41 seconds, with a mean and standard deviation of 9.57 s and 10.56 s, respectively. Despite the evident problems of sample size resulting in a positively skewed distribution and the limitations on the inferences drawn from …

Supporting Decision-Making In The Battlefield: Utility Of Multimedia Information Transmission, Sandro Scielzo, Adams Greenwood-Ericksen

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

In the theatre of war, environmental and workload factors (e.g., noise, time pressure) may dramatically overburden operator's cognitive processes. Well designed multimedia technology can successfully minimize both intrinsic (working memory capacity) and extrinsic (inefficient use of information) sources of cognitive load, thereby facilitating the decision-making process. These positive mediating effects of multimedia technology can occur during three distinct phases of human information processing: 1) during sensorial information acquisition, by filtering out unnecessary environmental noise and transferring information via context-dependent modalities; 2) during decision-making, by making critical task-relevant cues more salient; and 3) following response execution, by providing necessary feedback to …

Simulating Quantum Transport In Nanoscale Mosfets: Ballistic Hole Transport, Subband Engineering And Boundary Conditions, Ramesh Venugopal, Zhibin Ren, Mark S. Lundstrom

Other Nanotechnology Publications

We present a modeling scheme for simulating ballistic hole transport in thin-body fully depleted silicon-on-insulator pMOSFETs. The scheme includes all of the quantum effects associated with hole confinement and also accounts for valence band nonparabolicity approximately. This simulator is used to examine the effects of hole quantization on device performance by simulating a thin (1.5-nm) and thick (5-nm) body double-gated pMOSFET in the ballistic limit. Two-dimensional electrostatic effects such as drain-induced barrier lowering (DIBL) and off-equilibrium transport are emphasized as part of this study. The effect of channel orientation on the device performance is examined by simulating pMOSFETs with channels …

A New Regional Household Demand System For Gtap, Robert Mcdougall Sep 2003

A New Regional Household Demand System For Gtap, Robert Mcdougall

GTAP Technical Papers Archive

The GTAP model, versions 4.1 and lower, suffers from some defects in the implementation of the regional household demand system. Most seriously, the upper level of the demand system assumes that each regional household faces a fixed price for utility from private consumption. But with a private consumption demand system of the CDE form, the price of utility from private consumption depends on the level of private consumption expenditure. With no fixed price for utility from private consumption, the familiar Cobb-Douglas demand system does not apply. Accordingly, the upper-level demand equations are in error.

Furthermore, utility and equivalent variation are …

Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing/Demultiplexing By The Method Of Irregularly Sampled Zero Crossings, Ying Lu, Okan K. Ersoy Aug 2003

Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing/Demultiplexing By The Method Of Irregularly Sampled Zero Crossings, Ying Lu, Okan K. Ersoy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The tremendous growth of Internet traffic has created increasing demand on high capacity optical communications networks. Dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) networks has emerged as a very attractive option. Systems for optical wavelength demultiplexing have generated much interest in research and development. Since its first appearance, the Arrayed Waveguide Grating (AWG) has become the mainstay for the high channel count demultiplexing applications. In classical AWG design, the number of wavelength channels to be resolved is directly limited by the Free Spectral Range (FSR), and ultimately the channel count of an AWG is limited by the number of arrayed waveguides that …

Downstream Oxygen Etching Characteristics Of Polymers From The Parylene Family, Russell R. A. Callahan, Kristin G. Pruden, Gregory B. Raupp, Stephen P. Beaudoin Jul 2003

Downstream Oxygen Etching Characteristics Of Polymers From The Parylene Family, Russell R. A. Callahan, Kristin G. Pruden, Gregory B. Raupp, Stephen P. Beaudoin

Other Nanotechnology Publications

As dictated by the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors, there is an immediate need to develop low dielectric materials for use in metalization and packaging schemes in integrated circuits. The etching characteristics of a family of low dielectric polymers, the parylenes, are discussed. These are good models for polymer dielectrics, and are attractive for packaging applications. Three types of parylene are studied: parylene-N, parylene-C, and parylene AF-4. Parylene films on silicon substrates were etched in a downstream microwave oxygen plasma system. The goal was to characterize the chemical reactions that occurred on the parylene in the afterglow of the microwave …

Intersection Tests For Single Marker Qtl Analysis Can Be More Powerful Than Two Marker Qtl Analysis, Cynthia J. Coffman, Rebecca W. Doerge, Marta L. Wayne, Lauren M. Mcintyre

Department of Statistics Faculty Publications

Background

It has been reported in the quantitative trait locus (QTL) literature that when testing for QTL location and effect, the statistical power supporting methodologies based on two markers and their estimated genetic map is higher than for the genetic map independent methodologies known as single marker analyses. Close examination of these reports reveals that the two marker approaches are more powerful than single marker analyses only in certain cases.

Simulation studies are a commonly used tool to determine the behavior of test statistics under known conditions. We conducted a simulation study to assess the general behavior of an intersection …

Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Background

DNA microarrays are a powerful tool with important applications such as global gene expression profiling. Construction of bacterial DNA microarrays from genomic sequence data using a two-stage PCR amplification approach for the production of arrayed DNA is attractive because it allows, in principal, the continued re-amplification of DNA fragments and facilitates further utilization of the DNA fragments for additional uses (e.g. over-expression of protein). We describe the successful construction and use of DNA microarrays by the two-stage amplification approach and discuss the technical challenges that were met and resolved during the project.

Results

Chimeric primers that contained both gene-specific …

Labor Market Distortions, Rural-Urban Inequality And The Opening Of China’S Economy, Fan Zhai, Thomas Hertel, Zhi Wang Jun 2003

Labor Market Distortions, Rural-Urban Inequality And The Opening Of China’S Economy, Fan Zhai, Thomas Hertel, Zhi Wang

GTAP Working Papers Archive

This paper evaluates the impact of some key labor market reforms on rural-urban inequality and income distribution, using a household-disaggregated, recursive dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) model of China. We also explore how these factor market reforms interact with product market reforms currently underway as part of China’s WTO accession process. The simulation results show that the reforms in rural land rental market and Hukou system, as well as increasing off-farm labor mobility would reduce the urban-rural income ratio dramatically. Furthermore, the combination of WTO accession and factor market reforms improves both efficiency and equality significantly.
